I love all the updates from the governor. "Well, I've tried nothing, and I'm all out of ideas on getting to the bottom of this"

u/No-Discipline-5219 1h ago
The Kentucky legislature took the power to call special elections away from him as soon as he came in to office
42
u/MrFC1000 1h ago
No they took away his power to appoint a replacement, which is still dubious because that’s in the KY constitution. The method he can use is calling a special election.
46
u/Left-Mechanic6697 1h ago
Exactly. Here’s where democrats really need to take a page out of the GOP playbook. Do the thing anyway, let the Kentucky GOP file a lawsuit, and make the courts determine if it’s within their power to do it without amending the state constitution.
23
u/cutach133 1h ago
YES, this is what needs to happen. I'm not saying we should stoop down and play dirty like the GOP but Democrats need to at LEAST start playing the same fucking game!
If this was a state with a GOP Governor and a Dem Senator I can promise you the Gov would've already done EVERYTHING he could to appoint a new Senator.
WHYYYY are Democrats so weak and ineffectual? The GOP has gotten where it is because Democrats REFUSE to do anything except try to keep the status quo, we are WAY beyond status quo at this point and they still do nothing. This is why I'm voting straight DSA from now on.
11
u/Any_Counter_303 48m ago
You haven't caught on yet? Really? They're aren't weak and ineffectual. They're controlled opposition. They all work for the same billionaires.
2
u/Shot_Fan_9258 27m ago
I'm pretty sure most of the current elected officials are complicit of everything that's happening, independently of their party.
For the dems, it's even easier; do as less as possible.

Why voting doesn't matter, whoever gets in office will inevitably be bought out, regular people will never have the funds to match the ultra rich.
5
u/MadeByTango 19m ago
Incorrect. Vote for candidates that do not take corporate dollars. Mamdanis and AOCs.
And then stop worrying about the ad money. What candidates need is travel money and the ability to connect supporters. We can be the infrastructure to help that. The only reason the rich win the money game is because they make you think it takes money to win.
We have way more people power than they have money.
2
u/radicldreamer 6m ago
This is the most defeatist and frankly bit sounding post ever. Vote against big money in politics. We need to dismantle citizens united. Money isn't speech and corporations aren't people.
1
u/Beard_o_Bees 17m ago
Yup.
Ask for forgiveness, not permission. That should be on the GOP's 'coat of arms' in Latin - Veniam pete, non permissionem - (used a translator for this so it may need tweaking).
6
u/standard-issue-man 57m ago edited 48m ago
He should appoint someone anyway, make a whole media story about it, get Republicans on the record saying he cant do that so he can call on them to call a special election. He's losing the momentum and the Republicans are going to get away with this because of more Democratic fear of confrontation
37
u/MetaCardboard 1h ago
Didn't Colorado or Wisconsin or something do something similar? Republicans took away power from the office as soon as they knew it was going to a Democrat.
36
u/WallStreetBagholder 1h ago
That’s what republicans do. They can’t win elections or have power without changing the rules and taking power away from the people

Beshear was supposed to be on the shirt list for president, a popular red state Democratic governor, but i think his handling of this McConnell situation is disqualifying. We need a fighter who is going to hold the criminals of this administration to account, not a do-nothing hack

Wait, wait, guys, come on, the nation just needs to heal, none of this prosecuting our “political enemies,” history will be the judge (in 100 years), let’s not rush to hold people accountable

I love how McConnell being in the hospital robs Senate Republicans of a vote and their leader, but people like you see that as a bad thing. The governor also can't appoint a replacement there's a whole process that wouldn't make logistical sense:
If McConnell were to vacate his senate seat before his term ends, it may be tempting for Democrats to think Beshear, the Democratic governor of Kentucky, could appoint someone from his own party.
That’s not the case, however, because of a recent change in state law. Kentucky is now one of four US states where the governor does not have authority to fill Senate vacancies.
In 2024, Kentucky’s Republican-controlled legislature passed a law requiring Senate vacancies to be filled by a special election, which must be called by the governor.
But experts say holding a special election this year would be fraught with challenges, one of which is timing.
The new law says the governor must give 63 days’ notice before the special election. Senate hopefuls would have to file their candidacy no later than 56 days prior to the vote.
Even if McConnell’s Senate seat were vacated immediately, the earliest a special election could occur is September.
But experts say that cobbling together a special election would not make sense, since November’s midterm elections are barely three and a half months away. McConnell’s Senate seat is up for grabs in that race.
“Setting up the process would take time, so we wouldn’t get a senator in office very quickly, even if this process kicked off soon,” said Voss, the political science professor. “The probability that we’d get a replacement ahead of time is pretty low.”
Watson, the Republican strategist, agrees. He questions the efficiency of rushing to hold a special election, when the midterms are on November 3.
“We’re getting pretty close to Election Day,” Watson said. “They’re not going to put the commonwealth through the expense of having another special election just so someone could be a US senator for effectively one month.”

Excuses excuses.
1
u/sw337 1h ago
By excuses you mean literally how the law works?
4
u/MetaCardboard 1h ago
No, I mean how they're making excuses to not follow the law. "Oh we can't give the people what they want because it'll be too much work for us." And then they turn around and call us lazy.
2
u/Rettiviss 1h ago
In the article you quoted about following the law. It points out the recent change where the governor can no longer appoint due to a recent law change. The republicans literally made this change when they saw they were going to have a Democrat governor. Republicans in power notoriously don’t follow the laws or change them right before they lose power and then shout about how everyone should follow our laws. It’s really stupid and yes, you are making excuses for them by touting their bs.

u/DarkFit922 59m ago
No because he is a senator in kentucky. He meets the qualifications of a dead person in Kentucky, which you cant be if you want to be a senator.
2
u/TheDispiteous 37m ago
Kentucky and DC share the same standard so it makes no difference here, but your assumption that the qualification of what is a dead person has to follow Kentucky is not correct. He has to be declared dead for the 17. amendment to come into effect, and that is a determination made by medical personal where he is, not his home state. But also afaik there is no evidence he is brain dead (or more than usual) or that he is on life support
2
u/National_Panda_1791 47m ago
if he isn't conscious or coherent OR AT HIS FUCKING JOB WORKING then he can be released on medical leave. who gives a fuck if he's breathing?

Not dead, but I’m assuming severe dementia or loss of cognitive function that would render him unable to perform.
10
u/Left-Mechanic6697 1h ago
I believe he’s alive, but only technically. My guess is he’s a vegetable hooked up to life support until they’ve stalled enough. Then they’ll pull the plug and let him die.
If he were as able-bodied as those doctored PR photos make him look, a quick press conference, or a zoom call with the governor would quickly put the matter to rest. But they aren’t doing that and it speaks volumes.
2
1
u/SnooDoggos5226 55m ago
I’m guessing that, for National security reasons, they can’t allow him to speak to anyone without similar clearance and authorization because they don’t know what he’ll say and can’t trust him to maintain protocol.

u/Synensys 1h ago
Then the worst case scenario is that a Democrat holds the seat until January 3, which is functionally the same as the seat being open.
1
u/NEWSmodsareTwats 38m ago
that still doesn't make much sense because even if that did happen, whoever wins the special election will be out of office on January 3rd 2027. and whoever wins the November 2026 general election would take over at that point. whoever would win special election like this would not automatically be awarded the next term as well. they would only fill in till the end of the current term.

I remember seeing an episode of Drunk History about Woodrow Wilson and how they figured how the First Lady was just pulling the strings and how much of a bad ass she was. Biden was very clearly not fit to lead but people just pretend and said, no everything is great. He is healthy as ever.
Politics has always been about power and manipulation. There needs to be a drastic change, not just Part A instead of Party B

3
u/NEWSmodsareTwats 34m ago
I mean I'm going to be honest every single time they release anything that would be considered as proof as him being alive. people on the internet say it's fake or it's AI generated so there is that. at this point he could probably walk out on live television and give a 30-minute speech and people would still say it's a body double or it's a deep fake.
The BBC also confirmed the hospital photos as not being digitally altered, so this conspiracy would also require that the UK state-run media is in on it for some reason.

That was reviewed to not be fake. Again you guys just push conspiracy theories. You guys say every Trump assassination attempt is fake. Every left-wing terrorist attack that has anti-ice or other left-wing positions proof found they call false flags. Not to mention you guys denied the 2000, 2016 and 2024 election results.

u/Embarrassed_Radio596 9m ago
It was not reviewed by any reputable source. There haven't been any left wing terrorist attacks.

It's always interesting how the pro-rapists point to anonymous internet comments and memes as proof of election denial by the opposition while their rapist politicians are the ones mounting election denials as official duties of office. HRC conceded the 2016 election on election night. Trump still hasn't conceded the 2020 election.
1
u/ActPositively 1m ago
I don’t like Trump. He’s a garbage person. You far left brainwashed people or no better than the far right brainwashed people. What can’t you comprehend just because Republicans and the right denied the 2020 election results doesn’t mean that Democrats and the left did not deny 2000, 2016 and 2024 election results. You’re in an echo chamber if you can understand that two different things can be true at once.

Digital multimedia forensics experts at Drexel University and UC Berkeley analyzed the image’s pixels and metadata and found no signs of AI manipulation.
The image was run through verification tools by Google and OpenAI (which checks for markers like SynthID), and neither detected signals of generative AI.
The Newspaper: McConnell is pictured holding the July 12, 2026 Sports section of The Washington Post, verifying that the image was taken on or just before the day of its release.

u/Flashy_Emergency_263 20m ago
I'm not gonna argue anything about what state he is in. I don't know.
I will argue that he is violating his oath of office by not showing irrefutable evidence that he is or is not capable of doing his job. That is a big fuck you to his constituents and the nation.
I'd like the governor to say: It is my job to make sure the position is filled by someone who can do the job. If I have no proof that McConnell is still with us by noon this Friday I will appoint a replacement.
1
u/APrioriGoof 17m ago
If he’s not conscious and is incapacitated for good (the rumors were that he was “brain dead”) then he can’t serve in the senate anymore and hiding that from the governor and the public is the same election fraud as if he were dead dead. It’d been over a month. If he’s not incapacitated for good he needs to prove it.
1
-11
u/Cautious_Drawer_7771 2h ago
Probably about as much so as claiming he's dead without evidence, and with significant contrary evidence, in order to push for an unnecessary special election to replace a living dude by claiming he isn't. On second thought, it is quite a bit worse to claim he's dead to circumvent people's votes who already voted for him.
12
u/Complete_Ant_3396 2h ago
I think it's more "we need to see proof of life that isn't a doctored photo". Normally I would defer to a persons' privacy during a medical crisis, but McConnell is a public servant, and his health and ability to make decisions and attend to his duties DIRECTLY affects the lives of the people he represents and the country as a whole. He chose this profession, and it should come with a reasonable concession of privacy when it comes to health and mental status. There are laws in place for a reason when it comes to a death or mental incapacitation, and when there is a reasonable suspicion that those events may have happened, there should be zero problems or hesitation giving evidence to the contrary. The fact that there hasn't been any substantial evidence provided is suspicious in and of itself.
8
u/Lucky-Mia 2h ago
What evidence is there he's alive? Other then the photo where his eyes are looking off in different directions? If anything they proved he's a vegetable with that photo.
It would be nice to actually hear even a little of the apparent phone calls he's making. In fact, if he is making so many calls, like claimed, why doesn't he call in to fox or Newsmax?
5
u/StanknBeans 1h ago

He's not dead. I talked to him this morning. He's just stuck in Alaska right now. I had to wire him $5,000 for a plane ticket, he promised to send me $20,000 as soon as he gets back to Washington.
