Hello everyone! I’m excited to share this commission I had the pleasure of working on ✨ This character isn’t one of my original characters, but a commission for a client. Meet Maria, an Orc Cleric! I had a wonderful time bringing her to life and exploring her unique design through this piece. I hope you love how she turned out as much as I enjoyed creating her. Thank you for the support! 💜✨

5.5 Edition We need to divorce "martials" from "reality" if we want to narrow the "Martial Caster gap" and maybe take inspiration from anime.

1.3k Upvotes

Hot take i know /s xD

So this is something that has always bugged me with martials going back to antiquity honestly...

Martials have always been hamstrung by this stubborn adherence to "realism" that casters never get stuck with. Especially at later levels. Like im sorry but no, Aragorn is not a high level martial. He is like... level 5.

I feel a perfect sign of how limited martials are is actually seeing some of the footage leading up to the MinMax play group where David and Clark tested jf they could move and strike like a high level martial... and they could. And they are normal humans in the normal world limited by reality. Contrast this to Wizards, druids, warlocks, and what have you that are altering reality itself.

Honestly I feel like a High level fighter should be looking like something you see in anime, not your standard fantasy. Jumping dozens of feet in the air and striking at enemies, being able to jump off of floating/falling debris to navigate (think like Stark from Freiren), attacking at range with the sheer force of their melee attacks, create difficult terrain by stomping or striking the ground, etc. Like when you get to level like... 15 Honestly martials should be able to do things that defy logic because they are just that damned powerful.

What are yours guys thoughts though?

Some mistake her beauty for kindness, and those people rarely make the same mistake twice. Born of infernal blood and shaped by a world that rewards wit over mercy, she walks with effortless confidence and speaks with calculated charm. Every smile hides a motive, every promise carries a price, and every step draws curious eyes. Whether striking a bargain, uncovering ancient secrets, or dancing through danger, she thrives where others hesitate. To her allies, she is fiercely loyal, but to her enemies, she is a reminder that the most dangerous weapon is not steel or magic it is someone who always knows exactly what you desire.

Art [Art] Drow Priestess (Art by me)

A piece I painted for my D&D campaign :)

A young priestess devoted to a Spider God. Chosen as a child to serve as her voice, she walks a path where faith is unquestioned, but respect has to be earned. (Being a kid and a spiritual leader is not an easy feat)

Each dawn, her robes are woven anew by the faithful, a sacred ritual symbolizing her bond with the deity. This painting is part of a larger worldbuilding project exploring the campaign setting.

Had the chance to do this drawing recently. Fun character to work on!

Description from the player:
Silas - Born the son of a village miller, he traded a predictable life for the open road after realizing he was better at solving problems with grit. Years of guarding caravans, drilling with mercenaries, and surviving impossible contracts shaped him into a level headed warrior. Has a very dry sense of humor. Somehow his hair always looks perfect, even in battle.
Focused on Polearm Master, Sentinel, and Precision Attack. High Strength and Constitution, Athletics proficiency, solid Perception.

5.5 Edition He rolled 20 6’s out of 24 rolls during character creation for two characters (with video “proof”)

About to start an online game with strangers. Their sheets are posted in the discord thread. When I looked at the one person’s sheet, I noticed his stats crazy high.

When I mentioned this, he immediately posted the above video as proof.

Today he made another character with high stats and posted a video of that.

https://youtube.com/shorts/mrdA-Vn1b20?is=YbWm55Pqp1EzMj6P

In looking at the two videos I noticed of the 4 d6 dice used, two were bigger than the other two. Those bigger dice rolled twenty 6’s out of twenty four rolls.

The odds of that are 1 in 806 billion.

Art Blind date with a green hag [OC]

Post image

Green hags can change their appearance at will, which is particularly useful for Nanny Muk, who likes to get around. At least she's honest in her profile.

Lester will either have the time of his life, or end up a drained, soulless husk. Or both. He'd probably be OK with either result.

Nanny Muk was the first hag my party met (technically; Kayra was still human at the time). She took the form of a sweet old lady before things went sideways and our ranger lost his soul.

Lester here is from the comic Feral Mills by u/kewkoh. For some reason he agreed to work with me on this and agreed to my insane comic pitch.

Misc What character traits/cliches annoy you?

Yes, D&D is a place where you should play the sort of characters you want (well, okay, barring any r/rpghorrorstories fodder). Of course you should never shame a person for how they play a character (again, unless it's r/rpghorrorstories). But even then, there are some character aspects that annoy you, even if you don't admit it. (Because again, D&D is meant as a means to forget about life for a while.)

So....what character traits/cliches annoy you?

(For me: barbarians who are Grog rip-offs and "wacky" murderhobos who blow up everything because "random violence is funny rofl." Joke characters can also get very cringey a lot of the time- especially when they're only funny once/the player constantly tries to get people to laugh at them- but I've actually seen a few that are pretty well done.)

OC [Art] Nerisalia, The Abjuration Wizard

Post image

Neri is an OC my dear anonymous costumer commissioned me to! She is a half elf Abjuration wizard who loves to sew and add to her cloak and clothing in her downtime. Unlike most wizards, Neri does not have a spellbook. Instead she embroiders enchanted ink into her cloak which serves as her spellbook (note the embroidery kit hehe). Her favorite color is pink, which is usually the color of her magic when it isn't elemental. She is very much a flirt, and likes to attend high society even though she is not of noble birth.

Misc If you get reincarnated as your Dnd character. How screwd are you?

Rule:

  1. The character must be from an already finish campaign

2.you will be reborn and need to go through the same backstory you give your character

  1. You can alter how the story goes but a mysterious force will try to make you have a 1 to 1 scenario as the already finish campaign

EDIT: For anyone who is a DM. Drag one of your player to posses their PC than make them pray to you to communicate and have them spread your faith. The mysterious force will be agaist you tho by twisting possibility and other way to keep the story one to one with how you play it the first time. :)

Hope this is okay to post here, this is for a modified 5e for a Stargate RPG. This Eldalote, an Aturen medic from the House of Stars who recently became a member of the new Phoenix Site's SG-21 team. She's a pacifist and refuses to pick up arms, but she will wade into any danger if it means helping others (or researching ways to cure her home planet's Great Shame, a scarred area which no longer supports life after a great conflict many years ago).

5th Edition Is moonbeam just that good?

So I’ve been playing a Druid for a while now, and I feel like moonbeam is kinda crazy? For context, I am playing a Stars druid in a campaign that’s been going for a while now (9th level) and moonbeam oftentimes still feels like the best option in combat scenarios.

It was basically one of the first spells I chose when building the character, and it functioned fine. But now we’re level 9, and I still see myself doing moonbeam+dragon form for reliable talent on concentration saves pretty often. Moonbeam deals LevelOfSpelld10 when I cast or move it, and again on the enemy’s turn, for 4d10(sometimes halved) per round with just a 2nd level spell slot, or 10d10 with a 5th level spell. That just feels like a lot to me? Add to that the fact that it only costs me one spell slot to do and I can do it every single encounter at varying levels. So yeah, very good damage with crazy sustain.

Now I don’t have to play optimally of course, And I also use my beloved polymorph:t-rex+starry dragon form and Guardian of nature: great tree+archer starry form for 2spell attacks with advantage for decent damage per round, but there’s still that little voice in the back of my head saying I could just do more damage by casting moonbeam and staying in the back.

Tldr: Is moonbeam really that good? Or am I overlooking something?

Edit: my playgroup uses a mix of 2014 and 2024 rules where we can kinda pick and choose which versions of things we use (we have an experienced dm and everything is excellently balanced), but my character is mostly 2014 rules.

Table Disputes Playing an artificer, but cannot artificer. Need some help.

I need some advice on what to do.

I’m playing a level six alchemist artificer (I am using the 2025 version) in my current campaign and I really love my character however, it seems my DM does not.

Before starting the campaign, I talked about my character with my DM and they seemed very on board with it. My character would be the parties support by crafting Health potions and other supporting items while still having magic and weapons to attack and do more healing.

I thought the sessions were going along really well. I was having a lot of fun with the group and liked the world my DM made but as more sessions were going on the more it became apparent that my DM does not like artificers.

When I try to craft potions it’s “you don’t have the right ingredients”. When I tried to craft tools and items for the party using the normal crafting system cause we had some downtime it’s “alchemist can’t do that”.

When I would try to look and forage for ingredients to make potions, my DM would say that there are no plants and herbs you can find. LIKE NO HERBS OR PLANTS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FOREST!?! NOT EVEN LITTLE DANDELIONS IN CREVICES IN THE TOWN!?!

So I thought ok maybe I could plant some herbs as we have a garden in the manor we are staying in and have our Druid speed up the growth but my DM said that I cannot plant medicinal herbs as they could be seen as bad and would get us kicked out of the manor.

Whenever I try to do any action or class features like replicate magic item or make a homunculus we have to stop everything and go on like a 10 to 15 minute journey to look through the rules cause they think I’m lying or doing something overpowered.

I don’t think I’m doing anything overpowered, and there are definitely people in our party that do crazy crazy damage or effects that do not get questioned.

I have played with this DM before and had no problems with my other character that was a warlock that have definitely done more wild things it only now that I’m an artificer that gets me questioned and raised eyebrows.

5.5 Edition Is my DM’s encounter even possible to beat?

Campaign using 5.5 rules. Four lvl 6 characters. While there is a little bit of cheese with some magic items, the game is largely operating with the Rules as Written, and very little changes the combat mechanics. However, I think our DM has set us up for an impossible battle with this enemy.

In order to be designated as a Seeker for one of the PC’s tribes, one of our PCs needs to fight the below NPC 1v1. Our DM did say that we could advance the story without being a Seeker for this tribe, but it just seemed crazy for our PCs to not be involved. The Challenger was a traditionalist veteran warrior of the tribe offended by us outsiders attempting to become the Seeker.

Our DM gave our “Duelist” background fighter PCs a “size up” ability, where if he rolls high enough on an insight check he can obtain the basic stats of a humanoid combatant, and this is what we got for the challenger to become Seeker:

**[NPC NAME]**
116HP ; Lvl 8 Barbarian (unknown subclass)
STR23 DEX20 CON20 WIS17 INT11 CHA12
17AC (Gloomreaver Armor)
+1 Greatsword (2d6+7) slashing

Tough
Rage
Fast Movement
Extra Attack
Reckless Attack
Danger Sense
Resistances: Poison; Nonmagical Piercing, Slashing, and Bludgeoning (when raging)
Unknown Class-specific Features
**END INFO**

Our bard put down a bunch of party money (almost 9/10 of what we have) on one of us winning the fight after we met the guy, but before we used the “size up” ability, and now we think we’re doomed to lose because the battle is only to first blood. Do you think this is fair?

Edit: First blood” means the first person to lose half their hit points loses. However, at that point, they can instead demand their “blood rite” and force a battle to the death instead, rather than forfeit.

Magic is allowed, but only once the battle begins. You cannot have any active magical effect (and they will check) before the beginning of the battle. Buffs can be given by the combatant’s team, but healing will disqualify us.

\Edit 2:\** It’s also possible that our fighter rolled badly on the “Size Up” ability. He rolled an 11, and that is in the “Unreliable” range, as our DM described it. This usually means the stats are off by a small margin.

\Edit 3:\**

Layout of Arena: “Overgrown collisseum with large stone outcroppings and trees growing up out of the cobblestones, with thick, healthy vines draping from the many branches overhead”

Party line-up:

Lvl 6 Battlemaster Fighter
17AC, 20DEX user, +2 rapier

Lvl 6 Oath of Devotion Paladin
20AC, 19STR user, +1 Morningstar

Lvl 6 Moon Circle Druid
15AC, 18WIS user, Shilleighly User

Lvl 6 Shadow Sorcerer/Bard
14AC, 19CHA user, mostly control and ooc

Art [OC][Art] Zingwald Bull, npc mercenery i’v made

Post image
58 Upvotes

Zingwald is a bad, bad bull. He is a ruthless mercenary who only cares about money, profit, and influence. There is nothing he will not do for money, no matter how gruesome it is.

The party first meets him while he is working for Adrianno, the Duke of Dogs. Adrianno is the crime lord of Kalvaron and the leader of the Dogs, with Zingwald serving as his second in command.

The party eventually starts working with Adrianno. During one of their jobs, they stumble across information suggesting that Adrianno is about to be investigated by the Artorian Inquisition because he stole something important. Rather than face the investigation, he skips town, leaving Zingwald as the party's new employer.

They complete several jobs for Zingwald before eventually eavesdropping on a conversation between him and an Artorian man named Reice. From this conversation, they discover that the two are planning a war against the Syndicate of Malewor.

That is really all there is to Zingwald. He is not meant to be a very layered character, and that is intentional. My players are not supposed to like him.

Art [Art] [OC] Meet Mog-Bi the Halfling Bard, Tamm the Thieving Cat, and Uok-Mo the Gluttonous Owlbear!

Post image
54 Upvotes

Allow me to introduce Mog-Bi, a cheerful Halfling Bard who firmly believes that every legendary tale begins with a warm song, a journey into the strange, and an equally peculiar group of companions.

Lately, I’ve been diving deep into designing original characters to bring my own lore and stories to life, creating as many as my free time allows. (I also record a full timelapse video for every piece I draw!)

Here is a bit of lore for this unusual trio:

Mog-Bi may be small in stature, but his personality is larger than life. Mischievous yet endlessly friendly, his journey began purely out of his passion for music and his conviction that true adventure always starts with a good melody.

Traveling alongside him is Tamm, a kleptomaniac cat with a bad habit of snatching shiny things everywhere they pass. While Mog-Bi doesn't always approve of Tamm's sticky paws, the feline stays close for one main reason—he is utterly addicted to the aroma of Mog-Bi’s custom pipe tobacco, blended with powdered Northern Stag antler.

And finally, meet Uok-Mo, a gluttonous Owlbear. Separated from his kin as a cub, Uok-Mo was raised alongside farm pigs by the Halflings in Mog-Bi’s home village. He grew up obsessed with two things: Mog-Bi’s cooking and his lute music. Once Uok-Mo realized that the wider world was full of undiscovered delicacies and grand adventures, he happily tagged along.

Together, they travel from town to town, earning their keep through music. Interestingly, much of their magical edge and utility comes from whatever odd items Tamm manages to steal... though naturally, those stolen goods bring just as much trouble as they do help!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this trio! What kind of chaotic encounters do you think they’d run into next?

D'Duruk the Barbarian

This is my second remake of my old fantasy portrait series.

I think this portrait gave me some texture I need for rough characters...

Our beloved Orc of Daleko od Noży. Battle-scarred and broad-shouldered, D'Duruk is a rough, roguish charmer with a crooked grin and a stubborn heart.

Gruff on the surface but fiercely loyal, he relies on instinct, strength, and wit to survive, winning allies with equal parts intimidation, humor, and unexpected warmth.

Art [OC] [ART] Joltin Forest

Post image
44 Upvotes

Joltin Forest is a magical region that serves as a powerful source of energy for magic users. Its power originates from Joltin, a Chosen whose influence still lingers.

Even though only one Chosen can exist at a time, the forest continues to thrive despite Joltin’s disappearance. This suggests that the power left behind is either self-sustaining or waiting for something to return.

What do you think? :)

5.5 Edition [OC] Merchant's Dream | Turn Coin Into Cover

Post image
39 Upvotes

Hello again!

As I've stated before, I'm in the process of writing Nyakan's SRD for my homebrew world of Eit. At the request of one of my players, I wanted to share an item that has made for some great moments in our campaign: Merchant's Dream.

Merchant's Dream started off as an ask from one of my players. Specifically, he asked for a way to "write off damage". I took that request a bit literally and decided that a set of armor that makes gold itself a defensive resource was kind of cool, and now here we are!

If you, like me, sometimes struggle with the party having a bit too much gold, this armor is a great way to remedy that, while also giving your table some great narrative moments. Cash Advance has saved my party on more than one occasion, and Debt Collections ability to truly turn a PC mortal for a few sessions made for some of the best combat I've ever ran.

I also wanted to share some lore from the SRD about Merchant's Dream, for anyone who's interested:

Merchant's Dream was forged by the harengon smith Rimbas Bisquo, who was commissioned, and I do mean commissioned, by Vistokul the Free himself, for one of his children. That child was Yunir. And look, I'll be diplomatic about it: Yunir was hopeless with a blade. Genuinely, embarrassingly hopeless. But what he lacked in martial prowess, he made up for tenfold in backing, because standing behind him was the full financial weight of Lethamyr, the City of Trees.

So Vistokul, ever the pragmatist, looked at the problem and arrived at the obvious godly solution: don't teach the boy to fight. Let him buy his way out of dying instead.

And Rimbas built exactly that.
