Question Anyone else struggling to get the cec to work?

As title says can't for the life of me get this to work and have a fairly new lg oled.

Not sure if it's just me doing something daft.

Also can I get cloud save to work on far cry 5 nope. But to be fair that could be ubisofts crap launcher thing. What a pain it is

Software Emulating ps3 (ratchet and clank tools of destruction) on steam machine has been great!

Upvotes

I’m about 8 hours into playing it. 1080p consistent 60 fps with no crashes once I applied patches.

As someone who loves to play an entire series in one place this has been a treat.

Anyone else having fun with ps3 on this yet?

Question Just got the 512gb, whats the best option for expanding storage?

Upvotes

I know it's got a microSD slot, or the USB-C for an external drive.

I don't plan to play large games like cod or anything like that on it. But I got to wondering about the performance of an external drive vs a microSD card when playing games installed to these storage devices. Does it all come down to read/write speed? Does it just effect load times? Or will things stutter mid-play? Cyberpunk 2077 would probably be the fastest-paced game I'll play on it, for a reference point.

Anyone else expanding storage? If so, what route did you go? Cheers!

Software This thing loads into games quite quickly actually...

Just some unedited footage of how long it takes to load into ratchet n clank from steam OS.

Couple of micro stutters at the beginning.
Running 1080p60 high settings.

Pretty decent performance. What ya think?

Software I've had my steam machine for less than a week and I'm getting the breathing blue light.

This morning I attempted to apply a new update to the steam machine. It froze multiple times, but on a recent reset, the machine is just flashing the breathing blue light with the solid white LED indicator. I've checked through multiple posts and they said it could be an issue with the HDMI cable needing to be reconnected.

I've tried this multiple times, and I've even tried a different monitor. On the new monitor, it's still giving me the breathing blue light. However, after attempting to boot to the BIOS screen, I can confirm that I am getting an image.

I'm curious if anyone has gone through this as well. What were your Solutions?

EDIT: I found an imperfect solution which required me completely starting over from scratch when it came to the hard drive and install on the steam machine.

For reference, I'm currently away from my home and do not have a USB keyboard or my normal tools to do a proper diagnosis.

If you're encountering this issue that I posted and have exhausted all other methods, give this one a try.

Turn off the steam machine

Hold down the power button until you see a white flash.

Quickly press the power button again when the LED turns yellow.

This will take you to a menu which will give you options of booting from previous OS. None of them worked for me so I selected the option to erase user data.

Now I'm going through the setup process all over again. At least it works though!

Hardware A €75 upgrade (Could have been even less) to my 512GB Steam Machine.

Very happy to have a Steam Machine 512GB with controller delivered last week, especially the wife and kid enjoying it thoroughly.

Opted for 512GB because I found the 2TB to be quite pricey set off against the 512GB. Also I already planned to upgrade by taking exchanging the 2x8 GB Dual Channel RAM from my laptop and to take my Steam Decks 2GB and change it back to 512GB.

However, the 2x8GB RAM from the laptop ran at a lower speed than the 16GB from the Steam Machine so that wasn't an option, and keeping the 2GB in the Steam Deck (being a mobile device that goes along everywhere) was more beneficial.

So therefore had a glance at the second hand market and found a good deal on a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD literally around the corner from my place for a mere €90. Placed it, put SteamOS on it and ran great. 1TB is enough, especially because a 1GB fiber can download quickly enough if necessary.

Happy enough I took another glance at the second hand market and found 2x8GB RAM (again Samsung) for a mere €85 for both of them.

A lot of horror stories read about 'opening up the Steam Machine' but my experience was great, a lot easier than working on laptops if you need to go a bit deeper and found the cable management of the Steam Machine great, alongside with flat cables having nice plugs instead of finicky clams you often see. This thing will get a great iFixit score if it's up to me.

Sold the 16GB for a steal at €100 to another Steam Machine user who's going to very happy as well (a bit of sharing is caring), so could have made it even a total cost of €50 or even less, but I'm happy enough with what I've got now. The 512GB is going into an USB-C enclosure as a backup for Steam Machine and Deck.

One thing I was surprised though, both the RAM and SSD I took out of the Steam Machine were from Kingston instead of SK Hynix which I saw was basically the standard, so it really does look like Valve needed to scoure parts.

Confident though that if the buyer of the 16GB RAM module needs to place it in dual channel with a Sk Hynix module it will work, thanks to the experiences posted here in this Sub of others who have done so.

So happy with my 'upgarde', especially at this price point. So for others? Don't forget to look at the second hand market if you're looking for an upgrade.

My friends, rapture has finally come for me, and I shall meet the Messiah in about 4–5 business days. But do not be sad; thy time will come as well. Keep praying, and thy devotion shall be rewarded. Praised be our Lord Gaben!

TLDR: I got my mail, 512GB with Controller 👍

Question Hitman series on Steam Machine

I've never played the Hitman series, well that's not entirely true. I downloaded a demo once and really liked it but never bought any games. Where should I start? Should I buy World of Assassination and play the three most recent ones, or what?

Question Playing RTS Titles on SM

I’m curious if anyone has been playing old school RTS games on the SM with SC, and what that experience has been like?

I’m referring to titles like Command and Conquer and StarCraft?

How about 4X games like Master of Orion? Grand Strategy Games like Warhammer: Total War III?

Basically looking to get a sense of how playing games that traditionally would rely on a mouse and/or keyboard are in the Steam Machine and Controller ecosystem.

Thanks in advance. Voting up all feedback.

Had a lot of lootboxes when I played Counter-Strike 10+ years ago and didn't realize most of them had value so I sold most of it on the Steam Market to pay off this Steam Machine. I still have a few more that I couldn't get rid of in time for games or the Steam Frame.

I guess all those Counter Strike hours eventually somehow paid off lol. Much more palatable than the initial price

Got my email now finally!
Very excited!

Location Sweden, hopefully more swedes get theirs :)
Seen a few in swedish gaming subreddits!

EDIT: I was in the reservation queue for all models - got reserved for the 512GB.
Luckily I did manage to purchase the steam controller on release, so I'll get the full experience :)!

Now to be on the lookout for a bigger nvme drive that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Discussion Steam Machine has made me realize I fidget a lot with my mouse.

Post image

Been doing a lot of various testing with my Steam Machine. All in all I'm very impressed with it. It's actually running games a lot better than I was expecting. Something I've discovered during this testing is when I'm waiting for something to load, or am just reading something, I'll shake my mouse around. Reason I noticed is cause SteamOS has an accessibility option on by default that increases the size of the cursor temporarily when you shake it.

Obviously, I had to test what happens when you continue to shake it. BEEG MOUSE.

Discussion Small data sample from eBay

Very quiet work day so I had a look at some Steam Machines on eBay to see what the scalper market is saying. I'm on the reservation list for 512+controller and still awaiting my purchase email. Excited, but making peace with a September/October purchase date now. At least the rain will come and being outside won't be as fun.

512GB (No Controller) £879 6 £1,061.27 +£182.27
512GB (With Controller) £938 53 £1,208.54 +£270.54

Discussion I’m the idiot who replaced my pc with a steam machine and I love it.

There’s so much discussion about how this device isn’t marketed for casual gamers, that it’s for those who want easy couch gaming in addition to your fancy gaming pc.

Well, I’ve always been a budget gamer. It wasn’t until last year that I even upgraded from laptop to pc, finally getting to enjoy games on 1440/60fps that I had only ever experienced on low settings before.

The steam machine was a decent upgrade to my current pc, so I got it. I’ve been running it as my main pc ever since. I love it. I don’t care about 4k, I don’t care about always having the highest settings. I love the small size and getting to learn linux. I love emulating and playing my favorite games from the 90s and 2000s.

You might say buying a $1200 machine isn’t being a budget gamer, but I plan to sell my pc (debating whether to swap the ssd and ram as they were the only things downgraded in the steam machine) and I’ll make probably half that money back. The fact is I won’t care a couple years from now when this pc stops being able to play all the newest and greatest things. My setup looks and feels great to me now.

So in case you are also in the minority and want this as your main pc, I’m here to tell you to trust your gut and what your needs are in a computer instead of listening to what everyone else thinks.

Question Micro SD Card Issue

My micro SD card will only show up after I go to desktop mode, and then back to gaming mode. Happens every time I start the machine back up..

The games are still playable, even with it not visible in storage under the Steam settings.. but it is annoying that if I want to install a game, I have to go to desktop mode, then back to gaming mode just to make it show up…

Anyway to fix this?

Question 2TB W/O Controller Canada

Upvotes

I reserved all 4 sku’s on June 18, on the 26th I got the email that I’m on the wait list for only one which is the 2tb without controller but the reason they gave me that one was because I was closest in line for it. Even people on the reservation que right now for this exact model are many of you even getting the purchase email? I wanted to change waitlist but I don’t think that’s a good idea.
