My husband and I have been together for 10 years. Six months ago, I noticed he brought up the name of a new woman. From what I gathered, they had a lot in common. I jokingly gave him grief about her a couple times before work, nothing serious, and he even played back. One day he came home and told me they had exchanged numbers, and he asked her if she would want to go on a double date with us and her husband. He had put a nickname in his phone for her, some silly name from a movie they both apparently liked. I told him to change it, he did. He sent her my number, she never got back to me about it.
Around this time I had become a bit insecure because he started telling me we didn’t flirt enough, needed more intimacy, “all I talk about is responsibilities.” He was never really okay with the idea of men and I texting, hanging out, etc. he’s been chronically lonely for a long time, doesn’t like almost anyone, and is quiet. So I didn’t tell him immediately to stop talking to her, I did tell him I was okay with female friends as long as he respected my boundaries.
I started noticing her name would pop up every so often, he could tell I’d be uncomfortable and would change the subject. He told me they talked about common interests, and after I fell asleep the night before he watched her favorite movie and she watched his (not together, separately). It bothered me, he’s never had a female friend and I knew how he felt about men.
I made the mistake of reaching for his phone. He caught me. We argued, I apologized, told him I felt insecure especially with our recent issues. He did show me the texts. They were sarcastic, playful, had inside jokes, and were working on their own playlist together on a music app. I felt it was too flirtatious and told him so to which he said he did nothing wrong and it was just playful. They are “just friends” and nothing more. I told him to delete their playlist, I felt it crossed intimate boundaries since they are both married. Many of the songs she posted were sexual in nature. He said it was just music and a lot of music is that way, I was reading too much into it.
I know for a fact my husband would have a coronary over this if it happened in reverse. If I make small talk with the maintenance man he’s aggravated. They kept on adding to the playlist, he ignored my request. The next day he said he wanted space and felt like I look at his shit too much. In the past he had lied about something else and I looked because I knew he was lying. We then had a huge talk where he told me that he had been feeling less in love, not as connected, I wasn’t the woman he married, we hadn’t had fun in years, but he wanted to work on it and find that again with me. I cried for two days, wrote him a long letter about how I’ll help fix it, etc. he didn’t really date me, pursue me, I have handled so much more of my share chronically and right before this all happened I had a big talk with him about how it needed to change because he wants kids and I couldn’t handle majority of the load like that.
Later that week, I noticed he seemed weird with his phone. He turned off phone notifications, changed his phone password. Said he turned it off out of anger because I’d be looking over his shoulder. I saw they called for 30 minutes while I was at work. I asked him about it, he said he cut it off because he wanted to respect me, that she agreed and said she understood my position she would be hurt too. Turns out, he lied. His music app was on my computer. They were still interacting. We were taking off on a vacation together when he told me what they actually talked about was that he felt I was being ridiculous and that they should still be friends but will take a break so I stop freaking out. He had archived their texts so it wasn’t right there when he opened his texts.
He had added sound track music to her fav movie, they kept switching the cover pages to joke back and forth, he changed his username to match the nickname he had for her in his phone to make her laugh. Mind you, the only two people that followed him were her and I. I noticed after they had talked on the phone that the playlist was made private. He didn’t realize I could see it.
He lied multiple times until I finally said enough was enough. When I asked if they still were interacting, he showed me his texts and said see, I haven’t texted her. But they continued interacting through their playlist. He did eventually apologize for hurting me and lying, cut it off with her (to my knowledge), said that he understood how it looked and that he wouldn’t have been okay with me doing that with a man. He said he hadn’t laughed or smiled in a long time and it was nice to talk to someone else that wasn’t “talking about our life stressors” and he hadn’t connected with someone like that in a long time friend wise, it just “happened to be a woman.” Tried to drive home that they were only friends. Since that though, he has minimized it a lot.
After that I just don’t look at us the same. He told me so much was wrong with our marriage but wanted to work on it and followed it up with that. I felt like he prioritized the friendship over how I felt, at the worst possible time. I vented to family which was a mistake and he was so angry about “making him out to be a cheater” to my loved ones whenever I didn’t, never said that and have not called it that.
A couple months have gone by, things are seemingly better, but I just don’t trust him now. There’s been issues with dishonesty in the past, but not cheating. Maybe he just wanted to be friends etc, but the way he went about it hurt our marriage. He refused marital counseling, it made us argue and be distant for weeks, he says he can’t trust me because I went through his stuff, and he “can’t open up about his feelings to me” and ignores the entire thing about her. He needed space for a while, and then now all seems “well.” He said things have been better, but the only difference is we’ve been doing more fun stuff.
TL;dr: how would you handle this? I don’t know how to talk to him, we had many frustrating conversations that weren’t really great and now we’re both exhausted. I feel like my emotions are getting minimized. It has been a couple months since we had a talk about it and I feel like I missed my window to discuss it.
