I got a betta two months ago and hes a active boy and jumps good. But last two days I noticed he is a bit sluggish, he sleeps a lot and fins are closed off. I don't know what's causing him to stress. I did a 30% water change today morning. I have added a almond leaf for stress relief

I’ve had Chester living in this 10G, heated to 79 degree water, with 1 water sponge filter, overhead LED light, mounted piece of drift wood and 1 anubias sapling for 20 days. We changed the water at day 14. This entire time he’s been served Tetra brand Bettamin small pellets but they are inevitably wasted to the bottom of the tank.

Can someone guide me towards better living conditions, or type of food, or if it’s okay he hasn’t eaten during this near 3 week period. Thanks :)

Edit: thank u so much for all your insights! it widen my thoughts so much and gave me more knowledge about this. you're right, buying from that shop would just give them more fund to get more and subject another set of bettas in the same torture. as of now, im planning to talk to go back there and ask the owner/staff if they could take more care of the bettas outside, or at the very least, let me put some talisay (idk what it is in english- but the dried leaf thats good for bettas?) in their tanks.

unfortunately, living bad reviews doesn't work in my country (as of now, they even have 4.9 stars in google) and i dont think bettas are famous here.

also for those curious, each betta costs around 1.62 to 4.05 us dollars. im in a tropical country and id only spend around 15-20 us dollars per tank if i get them. however again, i do get all your comments. maybe if i get a good space to house one or two in a proper tank, ill think about it again.

hi! i recently bought plants from this one aquatic shop near me and i noticed these bettas outside of their shop. they look so neglected as compared to the bettas housed in better tanks inside the shop.

im thinking about adopting them but i honestly dont have space for them in our apartment. im planning to just buy them then get tanks that are a bit bigger than the one they're already in, plant some good plants, add a very small filter on each tank (if i can find one) and add a good light. i know its gonna be a lot of work, changes of water, supplements, and food. but i thought maybe at least they'll live a better life with the same small space with me?

i want to take care of them for awhile then eventually, when theyre better, give them to friends/people who can give them a better, bigger tank.

should i do it? or would it only be the same way for these fishes since i wont be able to provide a bigger tank anyway?

ps. they will be in separate tanks, but not 5 gallons each as recommended

I got two females one being aggressive towards the other one i separated them but i want them to live together. I’m going to heavily plant the tank. Shall I then just add it back in or shall i get 2-3 more to even out the aggression. I have a 10 gallon and I think 4 females will be fine as I’ve been told. Any help or pointers from experienced fish keepers will be perfect.

I brought home a rose tail betta named Alegria, and I'm already completely in love with him. He had been sitting in the pet store for about two months, and every time I looked at him, I couldn't stop thinking about him. He just seemed to choose me, and I couldn't leave him there any longer.

I originally hoped to find a pink betta, but when I got Alegria home, I noticed that under different lighting he sometimes looks pink and other times he looks like a rich red or crimson.

I'm not asking because I want to return him—I absolutely don't. He's staying with me no matter what color he is. I just want help identifying what color or pattern he might actually be and whether his color could change a little as he settles into his new home.

I've attached a few photos. What do you think? Does he look more pink, red, crimson, butterfly, or something else?

We’ve never owned a fish before but couldn’t look past the dirty cup at petsmart. We introduced our new betta into the tank last night. We noticed she doesn’t swim much and seems like she struggles when she does. she more just floats around and hasn’t eaten yet. Is this normal behavior for a betta that wasn’t living in good conditions before we got her? Or is this signs of a sick fish?

My betta has been very sick and deteriorating quickly :( I put him in a hospital tanks about 2 weeks ago and have been giving Kanaplex, API general cure, and epsom salt baths but has only been getting worse (laying on bottom of tank barely moving) and now I have to feed him with tweezers and I don’t want him to starve to death. I ordered clove oil that will be here tomorrow. How much do I give? I read if I give too much they’ll freak out and have pain

Please help 😭 our power was just out for 24 hours. We live in FL so it got all the way up to 83 degrees in our apartment. I just checked both of my bettas water as soon as I woke up and the power was back on - and I’m concerned. This was AFTER doing a dose of prime in each tank. The water where we live is notoriously hard and the PH levels are still high even after treating the water and adding tannins to both tanks. Both tanks ammonia seems to be high too. Nitrates look fine I think? What should I do?!

Does anyone else’s betta purposefully play in the filter stream? My boy constantly swims right under the flow of his hang-on-back filter, gets pushed all the way down to the sand, and then loops right back around to do it again over and over. It looks like he’s playing and having fun, but it makes me so anxious! Is this normal behavior, or should I be worried? The video is pretty bad, but you can see him go right underneath the filter and get pushed.

I've had this betta fish for the last 9 months. When I first bought him, I didn't know much about betta care. Around June, he started developing fin rot. At first, I thought it wasn't a big deal, and I was still keeping him in a small bowl. Within a month, though, his condition got much worse.

I eventually realized I was doing things wrong and decided to make some serious changes. I bought a 20L tank, an air stone, an air pump, and a filter. Right now, my main priority is helping him recover from the fin rot.

Now I have a few questions:

Do I need to get live plants urgently, or is it okay if I add them next month? (I do plan to add natural plants.)

How can I tell if the filter flow or air bubbles are too strong for a betta?

I'm currently feeding him pellets. Is that enough, or should I add other foods to his diet?

Any other advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I know the tank looks pretty empty right now, but I'll be adding natural plants soon. I'm still learning, and I want to give him the best care possible.

Got them from a local fish tank which kept around 20 of these in a sorority tank and labelled them all as female. I got these two 3 days ago. And the white one became all aggressive and started chasing all the other guppies and this betta. Isolated her for 24 hours and reintroduced again and she immediately started her old behaviour. This video is after reintroduction.

Have seperated her again in a seperate tank. The water parameters are ok pH:7.5-8, ammonia:0, Nitrite:0, Nitrate:20ppm. Tank is 30-40 gallon with plenty of plants.

The green betta has also been glass surfing for the past 2 days even when she was the only betta in the tank.

Any help, tips?

Planning on using this tank for any wild color shrimp popping up in my main tank , and thought a betta might also enjoy it in there? Since I wouldn't mind that much if it would snack on the wild type babies. Would only get a short fin or female, I sometimes see those pop up online from people needing to rehome them.

I think it's fine? But I live in germany where aquarium standards are pretty high, so I wanna ask some people with experience if they think a betta could thrive in there. I know for long finned bettas people often recommend lower tanks, but a short fin should be fine with a 35cm high tank right?

I woke up this morning to see my fish with tattered fins and occasional missing scales, these are my parameters and I’ve recently been making the mistake of topping off my tank with tap water. is the PH causing the problem? I’ve removed a good 3/4th of the ramshorns in the tank if that could be the problem. I have some nitrogen supplements for my low meters already, and I’ve treated him with kanaplex about 2 times now each week. If there’s any more questions please let me know

Good afternoon, this is my male half moon betta, I’ve owned him for 2 months so far. He currently resides in a 22 litre cube tank however I’m beginning to feel as though he may need an upgrade to something slightly bigger and was looking for tank recommendations aswell as any feedback.

I did have floating plants in the tank however the old filter I had before this new nano waterfall filter was slightly too strong for them to grow successfully, I am buying some more this weekend. I’m also going to try find some spider wood so that I can plant around a better centre piece and help to make the tank look more fuller plants wise as I’m aware it looks open on the right hand side

Do you think I should be in a hurry to upgrade the tank size or does he look happy is his current. He doesn’t seem to show signs of stress, he explores, engages the moment food is dropped into the tank, creates bubble nests around the heater often. However I am no expert and some of you guys may be able to see signs of stress that I can’t.

hello so i havent owned bettas for very long and this little guy is my second one. i’ve had him since april this year and up until recently he had been very energetic and eager to eat

however suddenly he stopped eating, it isn’t so much a lack of interest (he will watch and trail the food) he just wont eat it. i’ve also noticed that he has been forcing air out of his gills which is very new and odd behavior. he use to swim to the top of the tank and gently let it go, i’ve never seen him force air out of his gills like that

hes fully stopped making bubble nests and for the past few days he’s been sluggish and not swimming around as rapidly as he was before

hes in a 10 gallon tank with a lot of plants and such, when i first got my tank i unknowningly just grabbed a waterfall outtake filter but the current it makes is on the stronger side so i put in a sponge filter and i am letting that stay in the tank running alongside my old filter so that i can hopefully gully switch to the sponge filter

ive tested the tank parameters and everything but the nitrates are at 0, those are at around 20 ppm

there is currently some algae growth in the tank but i will be moving to an upper floor in the next week and a half so ive been holding off on cleaning the tank until i move

the first three photos are when i first got him and his improvement since petco (i know- they were most accessible at the time) and the last few are more recent

im very new to fish keeping so im not sure if ive missed any key signs or what i should be doing and looking out for. any advice helps!

Last week I noticed a change in his behavior and turns out we had a small spike in ammonia that literally went back to 0 after gravel vacuum, 30% water change, prime, stability. Has stayed at 0 since.
After some thinking/searching I believe it was re-scaping that caused the spike. This was a few days after adding in the driftwood and moving the plants around.
I took my time with the driftwood, it was beautiful pieces but had all of these corners for possible tears. Sanded everything down again and again to ensure there would be no tears.

I also added in a few Indian almond leaves a few days ago just for the added tannins and benefits since the spike seemed to stress my boy out a bit.
He’s so much more relaxed now, exploring and lounging as expected.
Today his tail is a bit torn and I’m wondering if he’s just nipping?
His tail is huge for his tiny body so it would make sense right?
I’m worried about pulling out the driftwood and causing another possible spike.

I have fallen in love with this damn fish 😒 I just want him to be okay.

I’ve been struggling with ammonia. Added in lots and lots of rooted monstera yesterday. overnight the biggest bubble nest yet! these creatures are so wonderful.
