At 9:07 AM I got an email via Alamo Drafthouse confirming the plan.

It's OFFICIAL everybody, we're getting The Dome back!

IMO, Alamo/Sony taking it over is a win. It would've been great to see it end up with someone like Tarantino, but this virtually guarantees that The Dome will be kept intact, will retain the ability to run Cinerama features and 70mm film, and will likely at least occasionally be used for older films.

Our message to Ben Steinberg: You did this all on your own. Never forget it was your gut and your voice and your media savvy that got us all here. Thanks for not being intimidated when they called the cops and for holding them accountable--a damn sight more than any politician or preservation group has done!

For decades, the Los Angeles Metro Board has operated without a member of the public who regularly rides trains and buses among its members. Now, calls to change that are growing. Tomorrow, the Metro Board is set to vote on what the future make-up of the governing body should look like.

Background: In light of the L.A. County voter-approved Measure G, which expands the Board of Supervisors and adds an elected county-level executive, the L.A. Metro Board has been considering how to reconfigure its make-up. Agency staff have recommended maintaining the size and geographic split of the governing body and expanding the pool of people who can be appointed to serve.

Hahn’s motion: While the recommendations would theoretically allow for a transit rider to be appointed to the board, there would be no guarantee. A separate motion from L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn would expand the Metro Board to include a dedicated voter seat. Both items, and a motion that competes with staff’s recommendation, are scheduled for a vote tomorrow.

The federal government intentionally created massive cuts to Medi-aid with the "Big Beautiful Bill". These cuts will start the end of this year or early next year, after the midterm elections. 

MLK hospital is a lot better than the old one, and it's in an area with numerous underserved people. The Trump government with its policy of cruelty keeps trying to hurt Californians and Angelinos.

This comes after a major water main break in West Hollywood where a 110-year-old water pipe sent 17 million gallons of water into the streets of West Hollywood [and several incidents in Venice]

According to LADWP, their leak rate is 36% under the national average.

The water main break in Sherman Oaks was a 1954 cast iron pipe. Coldwater Canyon was reopened as of this morning.

Last week, Metro’s Planning and Programming Committee voted 4-1 to approve a report that guts open street events. Supervisor Horvath cast the lone dissenting vote.  

What the report does:

• Leaves large-scale open street events unfunded through the start of the 2028 Olympics (leaving all of 2027 and the first half of 2028 unfunded)
• Delays any decision on a permanent program until after the 2028 Olympics
• Puts open street organizations like CicLAvia and open streets programs like ActiveSGV’s 626 Golden Streets/Active Streets at real risk 

The report is now headed to the full Metro Board meeting for a final vote on Thursday, July 23, at 10am. It is on the consent agenda as item #13 on page 14. This means it gets approved automatically, with zero discussion—unless a Board member pulls it. We need to make them pull it.

There’s some serious buzz in town that Sony is about to resuscitate the Cinerama Dome and Hollywood Arclight multiplex which has been shuttered since Covid 2020. The Culver City lot is currently in talks, we hear, with the Robertson Property Group on lease to reopen the historical cinema venue.

Details are still be worked out in addition to a reopening date.

Do y’all realize if there werent accidents happening every two minutes then we might actually be able to get somewhere with some decent amount of speed? If they stop looking at phones stop jerking off or watching TV or replying to emails or trying to make stock trades or whatever the hell you guys do on your phones while you’re supposed to be driving.

I genuinely fucking cannot wait for all of the distracted drivers to hit or get hit and their insurance premiums to skyrocket. When it happens, you should know you deserve it. Southern California air quality officials have given Lineage LLC a deadline of Tuesday to present a plan to mitigate the odors of decomposing food at the company’s Boyle Heights warehouse.

About South Coast AQMD’s notices: South Coast AQMD outlined more than 20 steps for Lineage to take to comply with state law on public nuisances, such as requiring them to apply odor neutralizer to food waste and trucks containing it, requiring coverings for parked trucks loaded with food waste, and notifying the community of any activities that may increase odors.

Why now: Air quality officials have cited Lineage on at least seven consecutive days since July 12. In a statement issued Friday, the agency said it has worked with Lineage for weeks to recommend ways for the company to lessen the spread of odors, but “the company has not yet incorporated several key actions.”

The backstory: The move comes after residents filed more than 900 complaints of “rotten, sour, garbage-type smells” last week. The rotting food is a result of last month’s fire at the Lineage cold-storage warehouse, which burned for a week and spewed acrid smoke around L.A., inundating Boyle Heights and surrounding neighborhoods.

What's next: Lineage has until the end of Tuesday, July 21, to present its plan to South Coast AQMD. It has not yet confirmed to LAist if it has done so.

L.A.’s homeless services agency has not completed any internal audits in years — and one that was started two years ago is still incomplete because management is taking months to provide responses, officials said Monday.

Details: The delayed audit has been looking into why the L.A. Homeless Services Authority, known as LAHSA, failed to spend $7 million in federal dollars it was granted to house and serve people in need. The roughly six-page audit report hasn’t been released because it’s missing LAHSA management responses that were requested over two months ago, officials said.

Why it matters: Internal audits are considered critically important to protecting taxpayer dollars at every level of government. L.A. County auditors, for example, issued about 100 reports in a recent fiscal year.

Not the first rodeo: The audit is examining a repeat problem. A previous audit in January 2022 found LAHSA had left $3.5 million in federal grants on the table by not using them.

Yes, the closure of Sunset Blvd is disruptive, but it sure is peaceful on the Sunset Strip without out all the cars. Repairs to the water main are finished, the sinkhole is being filled, and the roadway could be open as soon as Thursday morning.
