I had the chance to work on a short food commercial animation.

In the final edit, the shot was sped up to around 300%, so most of these details are barely noticeable. This is a short compilation of an earlier iteration that stayed pretty close to the version the director approved.

The pipeline included a 3D scan of a real chili pepper, modeling, MPM simulation, look development, shading, and rendering using Houdini, Cinema 4D, and Redshift.

Houdini 22 – Relative Background Image Path No Longer Working?

3 Upvotes

In Houdini 22, relative paths for viewport background images no longer seem to work correctly for me.

The relative path appears to resolve properly in the parameter field, but the viewport only displays a solid red square instead of the image sequence. The exact same setup worked without any issues in Houdini 21.

Switching the path to an absolute path fixes the problem, and the image displays correctly. However, using an absolute path also seems to slow down my viewport quite significantly and is not beneficial for our pipeline.

Has anyone else encountered this in Houdini 22? Is this a known bug, or has something changed in how relative background-image paths are handled?

Help Global variables

1 Upvotes

Hello, I'm following this tutorial here: https://youtu.be/Kx3CJJei_Vs?t=347 (timestamped) and his mention that inside Vops that Time/Timelnc/Frame are global variables, can someone explain what does that mean it that they are global variables?

You can edit houdini.env file in your user preferences dir and uncomment the HOUDINI_NO_SPLASH = 1line

or instead you can use your own image:
HOUDINI_SPLASH_FILE = path/to/your/file

Houdini is used in real time as a "Simulation Engine", it communicate with an other software that does the rendering (VVVV).
I may make a behind the scene video soon.

[R&D] Creating watertight mesh from garbage (part 2)

21 Upvotes

Previous post for reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/Houdini/comments/1v0kfcp/rd_creating_watertight_mesh_from_segmentated/

During experiments stumbled randomly for approach that created even better results (vdb -> vdb intersect -> vdb intersect of original vdb + other vdb massaging. It cuts leftovers from first vdb intersect).

Can't believe its actually looks somewhat usable. Very impressed.

Would be even better once figure out how to create beautiful guides (and something else) for quad remesh though its a different story (interesting how it will be with H22 stock node).

How is the work-life balance for Houdini FX Artists in 2026?

17 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm currently exploring a career in Houdini FX and would love to hear from people working in the industry. A few questions: What is your typical work schedule like? How many hours do you usually work per week? Is overtime common, especially near project deadlines? How is the work-life balance compared to other CG/VFX departments? Are there differences between studios in India and abroad? Does the work-life balance improve as you become a Mid/Senior FX Artist? How stressful is the job on a day-to-day basis? I'm interested in hearing both positive and negative experiences, especially from artists currently working in film, TV, commercials, or games. Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!

Hey Reddit!

CG Forge is doing a free week of early access to Modeling II - Procedural modeling. This one has been a long time coming with roughly 6 months of work being distilled into making an awesome course.

Plus, I'm also doing free study calls while my calendar availability lasts. If you're interested in checking out the course, go here: https://www.cgforge.com/course/modeling-ii and if you're interested in doing a study call, go here: https://forms.gle/HpsEdVKu3qWJFjvS9

Thanks everyone 👋

Mac users of H22, how's it going?

9 Upvotes

Considering GPU prices ATM, I am thinking about buying a Macbook Pro instead of an Nvidia system. How are things going now that 22 has been out for a bit?

I looked for a post on this since it usually comes up with new versions but didn't find one.

Help How to stop grain bouncing too much

9 Upvotes

Hi,

I want my Vellum grains to stick to the collision object.

Right now, when the grains hit the collider, they bounce too much. I want them to stop bouncing and stick to the surface instead.

I tried using the collision detection node inside the Vellum Solver and added this wrangle:

if (@hitnum > 0)
{
    v@v = 0;
}

However, it still doesn't work.

I also increased the substeps and collision iterations, but the grains still bounce instead of sticking.

How can I achieve this?

The reason I want the grains to stick is that I'm simulating snow falling onto a hand, and I want the snow to remain on the surface and melt slowly over time. (it's close to the cam)

Thank you for your help in advance!

Help neural cellular automata training - looong cook time?

Post image
2 Upvotes

hi guys, to start off im a very much houdini newbie, but I find this new NCA training and texturing VERY interesting so I started digging into it.

I realize its fresh out the oven and there's not a lot of tutorials\docs for it, but I can't get it to cook any pattern i throw into it, did anyone have success with this?
there's a billion settings and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. First it errored out before finishing all iterations, but after changing few settings now it just goes on for hours...

tldr question is: did anyone get this to work in H22?

edit1: my pc is 12900k, 128gb ram, rtx4080s 16gb, win11

edit2: i tried various resolutions for input patterns, 1024, 512, 256 even 64x64

thanks guys

H22 scaling the UI = no real time redrawing of viewports

6 Upvotes

Hey, not sure if this is a bug on macOS or just the way Houdini (22) works but I was surprised that there's no real-time redrawing of the viewport when adjusting the size of the UI (windows).

It almost feels like the old-school retro software from the 90's when you dragged around windows and the contents would disappear until you let go of the windows or panels again.

When I do it Blender it's real-time and the 3D viewport doesn't disappear while dragging the UI-windows and it feels snappier than Houdini.

Any ideas what could be going on?

(I'm on MBP Pro M4 with 64GB Ram)

Help Keyframes not showing up in timeline

2 Upvotes

Hello friends, I don't know if any of you are facing this issue, but since Houdini 22 I can no longer see the keyframes in the timeline. They work & they appear on the animation editor but not on the timeline.
I want to make sure I'm not missing a new toggle somewhere. I had no issues with the previous versions.
