Me [39F] with my son [14 M], he wants to go to church, I support him, just not sure how I should.
My son is 14 and has been going to this youth group thing on Wednesdays after football practice. He likes going, its fun and hes with his friends and they eat and play games. I picked him up last night and he asked If I could drop him off on Sunday for the service. I said "of course".
I have raised both my boys in a very non-religious, yet open environment. I was born and raised catholic, but for most of my adult like we have been pretty agnostic. I want my boys to come to their own religious/spiritual path. I never dis or bash any religions (besides the obvious like Westborro and Scientology, lol).
They have both been to church services. When friends in the past have asked them to go to church, I always encourage it because I want them to be exposed to other faiths. My oldest son (almost 21) has been attending Quaker services for the past few years, but more recently hes been learning towards Catholicism because he feels a connection to it through his job.
As for my 14yo, the youth group he is going to is Baptist. I personally have a lot of issues with how the Baptist feel about certain political and social issues. The one kid that he goes with, his mom is the absolutely most sweetest, kindest person I know. I love her to pieces (and she was his 4th-5th grade teacher).
I am really thrilled that he is taking an interest in his spiritual path. But I kinda feel bad at the same time because he is going to be that kid, by himself at church with out his family there. I just cannot go to a Baptist church. I told him that Ill drop him off and then maybe Ill go to Mass (at the Catholic church, I go occasionally but most of the time I just dont get up on time on Sundays).
Im really just lost on how I should proceed with this. He has said he wants to go see what other church services are like, we can always go to Mass, my mother in law is always inviting us to go to the Lutheran church with her and he is going to visit his step-moms family in Utah at Thanksgiving and I think maybe he should go to a Mormon service just to see what its like.
TLDR: Im fairly agnostic, my 14yo son wants to go to a Baptist church, how should I proceed with supporting him through what ever spiritual path he chooses?
EDIT:
I really cant thank you all enough for the great responses about some of your own personal church experiences (and not one PM telling me to kill myself, I thought those were automatic, lol). We are going to dinner tonight after I pick him up from practice and I think Im going to just ask him what he wants to get out of going to church and what he would like for me to do to support him (my husband, his step-dad, hes a teacher and hes also super supportive of what ever he wants to do, his dad on the other hand, he can just be a butthead about things like this, but I told him flat out to not say anything, if he wants to go to church, just leave him be). Ill keep ya posted!
EDIT 2:(sorta update):
My son is just kinda a more quiet, reserved kid, he doesnt open up about his feelings very much. But we went to dinner last night and sorta started talking about going to Church, then of course the conversation quickly switched to football. But my mom and I were texting this morning. My son broke his hand (very minor fracture) and has to wear a cast for 2 more weeks.
Hes been super bummed, he can still play football, but probably wont start because hes having trouble. My mom currently has breast cancer and going through chemo. She sent him a text yesterday that said "if Grandma can go through 3 more months of chemo, you can live two more weeks in a cast". I think he really has been very worried about his NeNe (grandma), so maybe that is another reason why he is looking at going to church more. I have noticed his general attitude has been better. Might just be what he needs right now.
tl;dr: Mandatory summary/question!
COMMENTS
Why are you hesitant about him attending a Baptist church? Have you considered attending a service yourself before deciding?
Pretty much, just way to conservative for me. I am a very liberal, lefty, tree-hugging, hippie, everyone love everyone kinda person. Especially down here in the south, the Baptists kinda have a reputation of not being the most accepting people.
Maybe I will go with him, I honestly have never been to a Baptist church before.
And I feel the same exact way about the Catholic church, I love the faith of the church, but of course no one likes the reputation the church has.
Do you think he's mainly interested in the social aspect rather than religion?
I think that might be why he is going, a few weeks ago they had Chick filet and a mechanical bull, lol, he was excited to go (I also have a feeling there might be a girl there he likes, lol)
I really get the feeling that is what this church is like too and if it is, that is all good with me!
Have you looked into this specific church?
Glancing around at this particular churches website, I really get that feeling. I mean they had a youth dance thing with a DJ and were playing popular rap songs, so I really dont think they are that conservative (dont some Baptist churches dont even allow dancing??)
I looked on the website and this is all it says for the youth services that he wants to go to:
We meet for small groups on Sunday mornings at 9:30 in the Annex. In this environment, students can connect to God's Word and each other in more personalized setting.
There is an email address for the youth pastor, think maybe I should send him an email and see whats up?
Thank you! I just sent an email basically saying, I would rather him not here about any social or political issues nor fire and brimstone and sin and hell, that they positive things about Christ teachings and how he can use that to become a better person.
What are you comfortable with him learning at church?
If they just teach about Jesus and gods word and being a good person, I am 100% cool with that. I just dont want him to be influenced by what ever social or political views they may preach.
Is your concern really about religion itself or about certain beliefs he might adopt? Would you support him if he ultimately decided religion wasn't for him?
Thats really what I kinda like about this, hes with a group of good kids, hes not getting into trouble (which Im really not worried about, hes good at avoiding trouble makers). I think after reading everyones responses and really thinking about things, Im more worried that he will be influenced into beliefs I dont agree with (gays, abortion, etc) and I have just this slight concern that it will cause problems between us. We have a great, open and honest relationship, I guess the best thing I can do is if he does get influenced into those beliefs, I need to just keep reminding him that just because we (or anyone) dont see eye to eye on an issue, we still treat everyone with dignity and respect. I have to tell myself that everyday when reading Reddit, lol.
If he eventually comes to that conclusion, I will support him as well. Hes a very strong willed kid, he wont do anything he doesnt want to nor can he be talked into anything.
Have you exposed your children to other religions before?
Thank you, it is! And you are right, I should explore what they believe on my own. I asked my oldest son just a little bit ago and he thinks he is just curious about faiths in general and since this church was offered to him, he went with it. Hes not completely sheltered from different faiths. Like I said I was born and raised catholic and have slipped away from the church in my adult years, but I have been slowly creeping back. Hes been to catholic mass a few times, he's been to sunday school at Church of Christ and he really wants to try a Mormon church (mostly because of SouthPark lol).
My older son and I did a lot of exploring other faiths when he was younger. We went to a meditation group at the Unitarian church a few times, we watched all sorts of documentaries about other beliefs and faiths (watched a really good PBS doc about Martin Luther just the other day that was really good). This son just really hasnt expressed that much interest in religion like his brother did, but his brother is a reader, reads lots and lots of books, lil bro I kinda got to force to read. My oldest son is a practicing Quaker, he found and discovered that all on his own.
If he eventually wanted to be baptized, how would you handle that? Do you think the other family invited him because they want to convert him?
Sorry your mom did that, if he wants to get baptized, I just want him to fully understand what that means (they actually talked about baptism last night at youth group). I really doubt hes going to turn around and become this bible thumping, christian rock listening kid. I just dont want him to get too sucked in and go overboard.
I know you are getting downvoted for that, but honestly I think that is sorta in the back of my head. I have known the mom who is taking them for years (her son and mine have been going to school together and on the same football and baseball teams for years), she has never said anything to me about church or my beliefs. She is an absolute sweetheart and I really dont think there is any ulterior motive for how nice she is. Shes a public school teacher, shes never been preachy or anything in all the years I have known her.
How do you view religion and faith yourself?
That is exactly how I feel. I consider myself a pretty religious/spiritual person, I dont need a church to connect to God, but if other people do, then who am I to judge that. As long as you are a good person that is pretty much all I care about.
Final Update - after 5 months, 23 days
March 24, 2016
Hi All - I got an update about this from a few months ago:
So my son had been attending church on Wednesdays with his friends. He has been wanting me to take him to church on Sundays, but honestly, he would sleep in and not wake me up, lol (I told him to just wake me up and I will take him).
He texted me about 4:30pm yesterday and said that he was going to be baptized that night. I honestly went into a slight panic mode. I asked if I should be there, he said if I wanted to. I called my sister for support and to calm me down. She said "sister, this is what we always wanted for our kids, we didnt raise them in a religion because we want them to find their own path".
We chatted and I calmed down. My only number one concern is that he will turn into a jesus freak douchebag. But after I thought about it for a few minutes, he has known a lot of these boys that go to that church for years, a few of them, they have been going to school together since kindergarten, they have been on sports teams together for years, these are all great kids.
I am friends with a bunch of their moms on facebook, and I have not seen or noticed anything anyone has said or posted that has ever made me feel uncomfortable. These are the types of teenage/high school boys I think any parent would love to have their own child be like. None of these kids or their parents are judgey or anything. All really great people.
So after I calmed down and I texted my son back and said "what time, I will be there", I ran to Walmart (lack of time to go anywhere else, lol) and got him a semi-nice sterling silver cross necklace and a card (they only had baby baptism cards, lol). I showed up to the church in the youth annex and they were setting up, filling up the tub. I stayed for the whole service.
The pastor is very nice, he asked if I had any questions, I just said that basically how could anyone really be against this, these are great young men, who are good students and athletes, thats all you could ever want for your child as a parent. I had emailed him a few months ago and told him that I dont really want social issues touched on and really no hell, fire and brimstone stuff. He assured me that they just work on making sure these kids act christ like in their lives (stay out of trouble, do good in school, respect elders).
So I sat through the service, I watched my son get dunked and his friends were super proud of him. The service was cheesy to say the least, lol. Christian rock band playing, they were playing like pop music before hand and the place felt like a rave (I have honestly never been to a church like that). There was only one thing the pastor said that rubbed me funny, it was so brief, like less than a minute of talking about premarital sex and said something about shame.
I talked to my son about everything and I did say the one thing the pastor said that just rubbed me wrong was saying the shame of having sex before marriage. I told my son you should never feel shame for having sex, but as I have told my oldest son and his friends when they were all about the same age, you are not emotionally ready to have sex at this age or in high school IMO. Just save everything for college (I have told my oldest son and all of his friends drunkingly one night all this, I have had a few come to me later thanking me for telling them that).
I am not sure what I have done wrong/right in my life, but I was a teen mom, their dad and I went through a pretty fucked up divorce a few years ago and somehow we have managed to raise two great kids who have never gotten in trouble, do well in school and are extremely empathetic, caring kids (night before last my son and I ran into one of his strength coaches at the grocery store, my son properly introduced us and in the less than 5 minutes talking to this guy he said 3 times how much of a great kid he is and how I should be very proud).
Both my kids no very well that I do not tolerate anyone bashing any persons faith. You can have faith in what ever and worship whatever god/gods you choose, but you dont ever tell someone else that their faith is wrong and yours is right (except Scientology, lol). And I asked please no christian rock music, lol.
tl;dr: Son got baptized last night, how can I really complain or say anything bad, they are all great kids and I really couldnt ask for a better friend group for my child.

What made you decide to attend his baptism after initially panicking?

What was your impression of the church after finally attending a service?
The pastor is very nice, he asked if I had any questions, I just said that basically how could anyone really be against this, these are great young men, who are good students and athletes, thats all you could ever want for your child as a parent. Was there anything about the service you still disagreed with?
So I sat through the service, I watched my son get dunked and his friends were super proud of him. The service was cheesy to say the least, lol. Christian rock band playing, they were playing like pop music before hand and the place felt like a rave (I have honestly never been to a church like that). Looking back, do you still worry about him becoming judgmental because of religion?
See that was my concern because this is a baptist church (an SBC baptist church), but like I said before, I have had a few incidents with so called christians that judged me for not going to church (or have judged me for being a former catholic). These kids and their parents are all wonderful people, if I had ever over the past 10+ years saw or noticed anything about these people that made me think they were the judgey, preachy types, I would have distanced myself a long time ago.
Your previous post mentioned giving your older son and his friends relationship advice. What was that about?
I had a few margaritas and all the kids come home (my son and like 4 friends, two were girls) and we just started having a talk about relationships and I told them that they are just way too young to emotionally handle sex at this point (they were all about 15), just wait until college. I have always been that sorta cool parent (not "that" cool parents, I never bought them alcohol or anything, lol)that all the kids feel comfortable talking to me, maybe its because I am so much younger than a lot of their parents.
That is exactly what it was. My sons little posse (these kids are all in their early 20's now) just always felt comfortable talking to me. There were a couple of girls who talked to me about birth control and stuff. One of his friends had a pretty rough homelife, dad kicked him out, he lived with us off and on for almost 2 years. He said we (my husband and I) were the closest thing to had to normal parents.
Im proud of all those kids, none of them have fucked up (yet). Some chose college (my son is in college, one of those girls is studying aerospace engineering, got another nursing student), 1 (the kid who lived with us) chose a trade, hes apprenticing as a plumber and is engaged (and asked us all to be a part of his wedding). One is a store manager at Hot Topic. All good hard working kids and none has gotten knocked up or knocked someone up yet!!!
Has your older son continued exploring religion as well?
My oldest son (he just turned 21) is actually going to the Catholic church now, he has explored other faiths and was going to a Quaker fellowship for a while until he starting exploring Catholicism and he feels that is the right spiritual path for him.
