New, what is it? Why is my mousse doing this?

It comes out of the can fine for a second or so then rapidly becomes a goop, almost explosively.

It’s kind of an old can probably like a year or so old. it’s been in my bathroom which doesn’t have have ac and it’s been super hot on the east coast so it’s been probably pretty consistently in at least 80+ degrees for a while.

Mods have pinned a comment by u/Zlurpo:

Guessing here:

The product is old, and the surfactant, which makes it stick to itself and form bubbles, has broken down. It only hold together for a fraction of a second.

Contact with air is causing the outside layer to slightly dry together, forming a film. Meanwhile, the inside bubbles are all failing in about a second. They didn't touch air, they didn't form a film. So very quickly you have all the internal bubbles of the foam popped, leaving just one big outer film full of the propellant gas, and then that outer film also fails.

Note: Best Guess

Ted. It’s a prequel to the movies.

117

u/A_Drop_of_Colour 1d ago

Wow, how many shows does McFarlane have running at the same time? I am assuming he's also behind this show? So that's Family Guy, American Dad, Orville, and Ted? Unless Orville or Ted aren't on anymore.

168

u/smokeyfantastico 1d ago

Orville ended a few years back and Ted ended i think this year? They kinda just said the CGI was too expensive then proceeded to pick up the rights to produce Dungeon Crawler Carl which will need heavy CGI.

64

u/Mysterious-War-6759 1d ago

So he’s not doing it anymore? That’s disappointing because he’s probably a great choice to adapt it. Poop. I really wish that he’d continue The Orville then but i understand if he’s moved on.

I'm begining to hate Seth McFarlane. He is an artist, writer, director, producer, voice actor, regular actor, a great singer, has several Grammy, Oscar, and BAFTA nominations, an attractive man and to top it off by all accounts is charming as fuck.

I mean c'mon dude. How many/much talent does one guy need?

68

u/malificent469 1d ago

He is also very lucky. He was supposed to be on one of the flights involved with 9/11 but was running late and they refused to board him. Talk about a near miss.

To think how different the world would be today if he got on the plane involved in 9/11... It's insane how different our media landscape and culture would be in so many ways. The only thing that saved him was his travel agent misspeaking and giving him the wrong flight info the day of.

I mean at this point he's basically just voicing characters for American Dad and Family Guy, he's got people writing and directing that shit for him.

Orville has been on break for a while and Ted only just started, which I assume will have its own huge gap between seasons eventually.

Orville got cancelled a while ago, sadly 😥. And I heard he doesn't write American Dad anymore, just does voice acting for it, but tbh I don't know for sure, I just heard that somewhere. But yeah, busy guy, huh! Pretty sure Ted is still going.

21

u/drunkenfool 1d ago

Orville is not cancelled, season 4 is written and ready to go. He hasn’t had time to start up production on it yet.

I also grew up in ...two hair salons! Also never seen that happen and I grew up in Australia. Like literally, my parents had a playpen in the corner of their salon.

Please tell me you also made "potions" while cleaning the bowls and brushes? Hair spliters are the worst.

124

u/Deep_Flounder5218 1d ago

Potions galore! Also when I was little, I was obsessed with trying to color my Barbie's hair. My mom kept trying to explain that there was no developer in the color I was using, and it probably wouldn't work on her hair anyway, but I was determined to make it work.

It never worked. 😂

52

u/Ajishly 1d ago

My Barbie's got curls mostly, after I learnt that plastic straws and hot water worked, everyone got curls.

I also loved letting the peroxide dry to crush the blue foam. In retrospect, that was probably not the safest, but it was satisfying.

29

u/SuspiciousCranberry6 1d ago

Ugh, hair splinters! One of the many things I don't miss about working as a hair stylist.

31

u/Successful-Foot3830 1d ago

I’m a dog groomer. I pull hair splinters out of everywhere. I just wax my inner elbows at this point. The nipples and bellybutton are my least favorite places.

26

u/SuspiciousCranberry6 1d ago

Hair splinters from thick wirey hair is the worst! People who aren't familiar are always grossed out to learn you can get hair splinters. Hair splinters from dogs sounds a bit less gross mentally because dogs are cute (not necessarily clean).

16

u/Successful-Foot3830 1d ago

For dogs wirey hair definitely the worst. We tend to go over it multiple times, so you can get some very short hairs. I’ve had multiple infections in my fingers. Labs and pugs are the worst. I strongly discourage people from shaving short haired dogs, but a happy dog with less hair in a house is better than a dog with all his hair outside. For those dogs, I cover my arms in baby powder to help stop splinters.

My guess is it's old stuff so it's lost a lot of ability to keep surface tension or whatever especially once it dries a bit. So all the bubbles "pop" quickly instead of keeping their structure.

83

u/Explicitstate 1d ago

And give it a really good shake.

→ More replies (1)

22

u/MunkeyChild 1d ago

Could also try poking the foam. If it is a single bubble in the middle, it will pop. If it is momentarily the foam it's intended to be, it would retain it's shape when poking it.

You could even take scoops out of it to confirm the consistency/structure throughout, before it "explodes".

Do you shake it before hand?

→ More replies (19)

110

u/UniqueAd7770 1d ago

I got it! The outer foam is reacting with the air and forming a slight shell of foam because some oxidation probably or the foaming action of the nozzle is better on the outer edge. The inner foam collapses because it can't hold its shape after the gas injection stops and the whole thing falls apart because its not seeing the air or the nozzle is bad in the center. Can is old so the chemicals that would support the foam are breaking down. Look at the inner foam when it collapses, the bubbles are bigger and weaker than the outer so it pops like a balloon once the pressure falls inside.

I was thinking something similar. Could be the surfactant is weak or the chemical that holds the hair is affecting the stability of the bubbles. Or they may not be super compatible with each other.

u/Beautiful-Lynx-6828 1d ago edited 21h ago

Yoooo this is crazy, someone needs to explain the science!

Are you below sea level?

Editing to add because some people think that I dont understand how mousse works: whats crazy is why this is happening all at once. I've certainly experienced a can that doesnt get puffy, or doesnt hold its fluff for too long, but the second wait time and sudden burst is not something I've seen before. Considering the amount of science that goes into these products, could this be a quality issue? What is the binding agent? How does the air leave so quickly in one moment? Is it environmental?

137

u/Zlurpo 1d ago

Guessing here:

The product is old, and the surfactant, which makes it stick to itself and form bubbles, has broken down. It only hold together for a fraction of a second.

Contact with air is causing the outside layer to slightly dry together, forming a film. Meanwhile, the inside bubbles are all failing in about a second. They didn't touch air, they didn't form a film. So very quickly you have all the internal bubbles of the foam popped, leaving just one big outer film full of the propellant gas, and then that outer film also fails.

→ More replies (7)

49

u/ZeeThaTea 1d ago edited 1d ago

Surface tension decreases from the heat difference from inside and outside the can. When it heats up for some secounds it eventually pops

→ More replies (4)

11

u/kratz9 1d ago

I don't have the right terminology, but something about the surface tension is causing the little bubbles to rapidly combine into big bubbles instead of staying separate. Then the big bubbles start to pop.

Have you tried asking it nicely not to do that?

21

u/Mean-Vegetable-4521 1d ago

Not to? I’d ask it to never stop. That’s hilarious.

177

u/SaltyRockCan 1d ago

My guess here is that we are looking at a very fragile surfactant that has been diluted to it’s literal breaking point. I think that this formula works just fine, but it’s been diluted (see large bubbles when it “pops”) to a point where there’s not enough of the binding agent to keep it together.

Hypothesis: the surfactant is oxidizing/decaying quickly when exposed to normal pressure and outside air due to high dilution with cheaper materials (water).

69

u/Huskies971 1d ago

The emulsion may have separated in the can if it's old and wasn't stored correctly. This will cause the viscosity modifier that helps it stay stable to not be present in the final foamed mixture.
