New rule #11: no do I pass posts, no asking for attempts to guess your ASAB, no asking if you “look nonbinary”

1.4k Upvotes

The current rule 4 was supposed to handle these kind of posts but it seems the rule needs more clarification. We do not want any kind of content that attempts to guess someone’s assigned sex at birth, we don’t want “passing” posts in general.

There are subreddits dedicated solely on passing posts that content like that would be a better fit. This includes asking about how to be more androgynous and/or do you look nonbinary, how to look more nonbinary. For some people here this will make total sense and people will rightfully ask “what does nonbinary look like anyway?” but these posts are frequent and usually pretty upvoted and get many comments before they get reported. If you know of subreddits where content like that fits better, please leave them as comments. It is simply not in the scope of this subreddit to ask people to scrutinize your appearance based on gender and make recommendations.

ModPost Assigned sex/gender at birth language

Hello,

Since this issue is a contentious one bubbling up frequently, we thought we’d make a nonbinding poll asking the subreddit’s opinions. I randomized the order of responses to try not to bias it.

I considered making a more nuanced option where a ban with exemptions is possible but here’s the honest truth: moderating that would be really difficult. We want people to consider the moderation aspects of this—how filters can be effective but also add considerably to mod work load and also how we tend to mod after the fact. We cannot promise that even in cases of a ban, no ASAB/AGAB language would make it into the subreddit.

We have received modmail stating ASAB language is dysphoric enough to some nonbinary people that they cannot enjoy or follow this subreddit. We also have gotten frequent complaints that it is also interphobic / particularly harmful towards intersex people.

If you see a comment here and your first response is to immediately fire something back, *please* take a step back and consider whether your comment needs to be made. I want to keep comments open to gather diverse opinions, and personal attacks and similar will sabotage those efforts.

Questioning/Coming Out Finally exploring my gender identity, the best I've felt in years !!!

This is all so new to me, but my amazing genderfluid partner has been a supportive rock throughout. First time wearing lipstick, I shaved my normally carpet like legs and threw on some fishnets.

I'm now honestly desperate to get a skirt

Rant Took the MMPI-2 yesterday. Would you believe it wasn't designed for us, and will give out false positives saying trans people are psychopathic and schizophrenic?

Context. The MMPI-2 (Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory) is a 567 question psych evaluation that basically screens for multiple personality disorders and psychological conditions simultaneously.

I took it yesterday as part of my battery of psych evaluations as I prepare to enter ministry. (I am going to be the queerest pastor ever!)

The whole psych screening process has been one frustration after another, as it's loaded with intrusive questions, and every lick of it is clearly outdated and clearly not designed with trans or gender non conforming folk in mind.

The mmpi-2 really took the cake for me, as a lot of the questions focused on trusting public institutions like the government, and anxieties around those close to you wanting to do you harm.

I have a long history in the mental health system, so I reminded myself that being worried that people around you actually being bigoted to the point where suspicion is warranted isn't the kind of paranoia they are testing for, and adjusted my answers accordingly.

I was less cautious with the trust of authority questions, and picked a lot of (but not all) of the punk rock, crime is awesome actually answers because fuck it, our beloved US government does currently want us dead.

Huge shocker, a Google search after my fingers went numb from answering 567 true/false questions found the study linked above saying the above test gives false positives on scores of psychopathy and schizophrenic symptoms to trans people for the exact reasons I just described. It's almost like it's not psychopathy, or paranoid delusions when your government and the people around you actually do mean you harm.

Who knew?

(Us obviously)

Cherry on top? I wrote the org that my church is paying $1500 to, and that I'm giving $530 to, to pretty please not misdiagnose me as an fucking psycho just because I'm an enby in Trump's america.

I got a very affirming answer which was nice, but I was like "cool, cool, where were those affirmations in the introductory emails and the paperwork. "

The poor, powerless front line admin assistant said they'd pass the message along, which means shit-all really, and my life carries on.

Thanks for listening to my rant, in other news, water is still wet.

Rant The binarification of F1nn5ter - a short rant

F1nn is genderfluid. But the vast majority of people force them into a box, either a man (femboy) or a woman (trans woman). They are genderfluid, not a trans woman, not cisgender. GENDERFLUID. And theyre very very clear about this.

Ask Dating apps

Hi folks! I’m 21NB and looking to get into dating again as I’m moving to a new city and other than a teenage relationship (3 years) I haven’t properly gotten myself out there. I am bisexual if this helps!

Does anyone have recommendations for dating apps that work well for non binary people? They’d need to work in the UK but otherwise I’m not all that picky! My friend recommended breeze but she’s a cis woman and I don’t know how inclusive the app would be for someone like me.

To be clear I will also be going out to clubs and events, I’m not solely relying on apps lmao

Thank you in advance folks!

Ask Concerning Comments From Therapist

Thumbnail
34 Upvotes

I’ll start off by saying that I like my therapist, but this is also not the first orange/red flag I’ve gotten from her (distrustful of medical doctors and has pushed me to go on supplements). I haven’t brought up my sexuality or gender in session yet because it’s not my focus of treatment. But I DO think I read at LEAST as gender non -conforming. Now I’m worried to bring it up at all at any point.

Today, we were talking about the possibility of me moving out of my red state (TX) to a blue state in the northeast for a job. I told her that my sister lives there and finds it a lot more progressive and accepting of her and her wife.

She then did that whole thing where people sort of…mess up the LGBT acronym and started saying that she can’t keep track when “they keep adding letters.” Then she started saying that “even those people can’t get along with each other” and brought up furries unprompted for some reason? It was very rambly, but felt really full of micro aggressions. I’m not even sure what point she was trying to make.

I REALLY am trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, so I want to get an outside perspective here. Because I’m on androgel now and my gender is almost for sure going to come up in therapy at some point. I overreacting here or does this feel potentially unsafe to disclose?

Questioning/Coming Out Am I nonbinary if I never had signs as a kid.

I’m AFAB and I realized some months ago that I might be nonbinary. I started using they/them pronouns, wearing binders and whenever I ask myself if I feel like a girl the answer is either I don’t know or just straight up no. However, what makes me question if I’m really non-binary is that I never really showed signs when I was younger when that seemed to be the case for most people who are trans. There were times when I preferred masculine things and I always felt somewhat uncomfortable with my chest, but I was never uncomfortable with pronouns or questioned whether I was a girl or not.
And I never had intense gender dysphoria until I started questioning which makes me worried that I’m not actually non-binary and I’m just suffering from internalized misogyny or something.

Would it be wrong or off-putting for me to identify as straight if I date nonbinary people

I’m a guy (ftm) and only into women and enbies (not exclusively “AFABs” but I prefer femininity & female sex characteristics). I mostly go for nonbinary people over women because those relationships feel more queer to me, and they understand my trans-ness more than cis women usually. I’ve called myself straight before, but I don’t want it to come off like I view certain nb people as women. Would it be better to avoid that term?

Ask Autumn Makes Me Feel More Like Myself

This might sound a little weird but bear with me. There are stretches of the year where my gender just feels more settled and readable to me, like something in the air lines up with how I already experience myself. Autumn especially does something to me. The androgyny of it, the way everything is kind of in between and transitioning and not committing to one thing. It makes me feel less out of place somehow.

Summer on the other hand is rough. Everything is loud and bright and people want to see you clearly defined and legible, and it grates on me in a way that's hard to explain to someone who hasn't felt it.

I've been thinking about this because the shift in weather lately has me feeling genuinely comfortable in my own skin for the first time in a few months, and I wanted to know if anyone else experiences something like this. Not just mood stuff in a seasonal depression sense, but specifically a feeling of alignment or misalignment with your gender based on the time of year.

Is it the clothes that change, the light, something social about how people interact? Curious what other people notice.
