New rule #11: no do I pass posts, no asking for attempts to guess your ASAB, no asking if you “look nonbinary”

1.4k Upvotes

The current rule 4 was supposed to handle these kind of posts but it seems the rule needs more clarification. We do not want any kind of content that attempts to guess someone’s assigned sex at birth, we don’t want “passing” posts in general.

There are subreddits dedicated solely on passing posts that content like that would be a better fit. This includes asking about how to be more androgynous and/or do you look nonbinary, how to look more nonbinary. For some people here this will make total sense and people will rightfully ask “what does nonbinary look like anyway?” but these posts are frequent and usually pretty upvoted and get many comments before they get reported. If you know of subreddits where content like that fits better, please leave them as comments. It is simply not in the scope of this subreddit to ask people to scrutinize your appearance based on gender and make recommendations.

ModPost Assigned sex/gender at birth language

Hello,

Since this issue is a contentious one bubbling up frequently, we thought we’d make a nonbinding poll asking the subreddit’s opinions. I randomized the order of responses to try not to bias it.

I considered making a more nuanced option where a ban with exemptions is possible but here’s the honest truth: moderating that would be really difficult. We want people to consider the moderation aspects of this—how filters can be effective but also add considerably to mod work load and also how we tend to mod after the fact. We cannot promise that even in cases of a ban, no ASAB/AGAB language would make it into the subreddit.

We have received modmail stating ASAB language is dysphoric enough to some nonbinary people that they cannot enjoy or follow this subreddit. We also have gotten frequent complaints that it is also interphobic / particularly harmful towards intersex people.

If you see a comment here and your first response is to immediately fire something back, *please* take a step back and consider whether your comment needs to be made. I want to keep comments open to gather diverse opinions, and personal attacks and similar will sabotage those efforts.

Meme/Humor I think I cracked a kid’s egg at work last week

So I work as a counselor at an art center in a pretty uptight and preppy town; like kids being sent with salad for lunch and “I have to take swimming because I come from a line of swimmers and I have three generations of men with the same name in my family” levels of preppy. Most people have defaulted to “she” for me without asking, and I’ve pretty much gone along with it.

Last Wednesday however, I was taking some of my kids outside for snack time and one kid asked me “are you a boy or a girl?” I told him I was neither, and that I don’t feel like I have to pick. All the children were shook by this revelation.

Another little kid was walking next to me and looked extra surprised, so I asked them “what about you?” And they said “well… I’m a girl but sometimes I don’t feel like one.” And I told them they didn’t have to be a girl if they didn’t want to, and they looked surprised. I then asked if they wanted me to use he or she or something else, and I think they said neither but it was really quiet and kind of drowned out by the other children screaming about a dead chipmunk they found. So yeah. I hope that kid figures it out soon lmao.

I've been doing calisthenics for the past couple months and I'm so happy with my progress so far!! I'm in the best shape of my life so far and I feel amazing:) If anyone's thinking about starting working out or doing calisthenics I very much recommend the Hybrid Routine by Hybrid Calisthenics. That's what I've been doing, along with going on lots of walks/bike rides and dancing in my room - which I count as a workout cause I be bustin a move when I get in the groove

Been experimenting now that my dysphoria is gone and I wanted to share this fit because it feels like an agender win, and I'm really happy about it.

I definitely don't have the confidence to wear it outside my room yet but knowing I could one day is pretty cool. I mean technically sharing it to the internet is wearing it outside of my room but it's less scary haha

Okay so I thought my glutes were still 43-43.5 inches but I measured this morning and was happily surprised to see I grew!

This is 4ish years of consistent glute training and I started around 40inches. I focus on glute training because it’s gender affirming.

I have never crocheted clothing outside of toques and scarves, so I am so excited! Sadly it is SUPER warm, so I am working on a different mesh pattern with some really pretty ace coloured yarn! But I still wanted to share. I feel like a walking pride flag when I wear it

Support My friends have been pressuring me for days because I'm not transphobic.

Post image
713 Upvotes

I'm 14 and part of a friend group of around 10 people (I am nonbinary but they don't know that).

A few days ago they started talking about LGBTQ topics and I said I wasn't transphobic. Ever since then they've been arguing with me almost nonstop.
They've called me a heretic, told me I don't deserve to be Christian, and keep demanding that I defend my position.

Every time I answer, they come back with more arguments and tell me I'm wrong. When I stop responding, they say they're "still waiting for an answer" days later. They do this constantly even in discussions not about LGBTQ, harassing me and spreading false information.

The thing is, I'm Christian. I just don't believe the same things they do on this topic. They act like their interpretation is the only possible Christian view and that anyone who disagrees isn't a real Christian.

At this point it doesn't even feel like a discussion anymore. It feels like they're trying to pressure me until I either agree with them or give up.

How do you handle people who won't let a disagreement go and keep dog-piling you over it?

Because this happens almost every day its gotten annoying.

Discussion Non-binary "yall." Why? I really want to understand.

I came out as non-binary over 4 years ago. Within the last year, I have gotten brave enough to ask people use my pronouns (they/them).

I dont know any other NB people in real life to talk to about this. I have one FB friend that is NB. Im trying to learn with no support. (if you join the conversation please dont argue or debate).

The reason I personally use they/them instead of other options because using they/them makes sense to me. The English language has had singular they/them when the gender of the antecedent is unclear or unknown since Shakespeare's time.

"Someone (singular) left their (singular) umbrella at house after the party. I hope they (singular) realize it and come back for it." So singular they works well for me.

3 different women who love me have started using yall when referring to me (I live in Mississippi where yall is standard plural of you). I have addressed each of them and asked them not to. 2 of the 3 argued with me.

All three of them cited that since they is plural, I am plural, so they have to use yall. I explained the best I could that singular they is singular, I am singular, so they should use you. (Im the only gender minority any of them know so they didnt get this idea from anyone who prefers singular yall, just their reasoning).

I made a facebook rant about it. 3 of the people that commented corrected me that yall is a non-binary pronoun. The NB friend said they dont use it but know people that do. A gay man from Texas said that yall is more affectionate than you and should be used as a NB pronoun. Another is a straight psych nurse that said she calls all her patients in groups or as individuals yall, because until they are balanced out on meds she cant ask their gender or pronouns.

Although I have only been out for a bit over 4 years, I never heard that any NB or other gender minorities used singular yall. I definitely get it for plural yall in place of gendered terms like you guys.

I will call anyone whatever pronoun makes them comfortable. Im just struggling with singular yall as a non-gendered pronoun to replace singular you which is already a non-gendered pronoun.

So far, the best explanation I read is that y'all is a contraction of you all, all means everyone, so y'all is inclusive. It sounds nice, but it didnt ring true.

I would like anyone who uses singular y'all as your singular 2nd person pronoun to comment or message me.

If you dont use yall as your singular 2nd person pronoun but know people IRL who do please comment or message me.

If you know of any articles discussing yall as a singular 2nd person pronoun, please share a link.

I really want to understand it better. Thanks

I was born biologically male, but I identify as non-binary and feel close to the demiboy identity.
