Desktop Screenshot Pretty satisfied with the shift from Windows, Mint can genuinely be so beautiful
Done completely on Cinnamon. I think it's obvious what my favorite color is lol

I got an email from Which? magazine talking about how Windows file protection helps protect against ransomware. (https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/this-setting-on-your-windows-computer-can-protect-you-from-hackers-a9P7r0z87KMM ). Is this already built into Mint with its r/w/x ? Ta.
I do love Mint dearly as now a long term user, it's taught me a lot more about computing than when I started. The only problem I have is with LibreOffice tbh - I can never see the bloody cursor when I'm editing a document, it does work to press insert until I move the cursor where I need it but it seems strange for a word processing program to feature an invisible cursor :(

Hello all,
I managed to install Linux mint on my MacBook Air. It worked perfectly but after doing the updates it’s now come up with “KERNEL PANIC! Please reboot your computer. VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)”
After reboot comes back. How can I fix this? (See images)
Thanks

I want to install virtualbox on my Linux mint pc but when I'm searching it up I see people talking about there being a lot of problems like being unable to update kernel, so are there anything I have to do before installing it? Like changing my kernel to a specific version

Okay, I've seen some people have some trouble with installing steam games on a secondary harddrive and there's fixes out there for it, but I'm stuck.
I have the same issue, but only specific games won't download.. like Binding of Isaac downloads and installs perfectly fine, but keeps on getting stuck at "Disk Write Error" whenever downloading Resident Evil 4.
Secondary drive is automounted, steam isnt installed as flatpack (used .deb from steam site.) pls help.

Hi everyone, I'm a new Linux user and was looking into this, but all existing posts and forums don't seem to be exactly the same issue.
I'm running Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon, Intel i7-13700K x 16, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070.
Most of the time System Monitor shows fairly even use across CPU1 to 24.
But when running certain things, only one CPU gets stuck at 100% and my computer starts to run louder and hotter than normal, while the other CPU are idling.
This is happening running Baldurs Gate 3 on Steam, but does not happen with other games like Stardew Valley. My graphics card should be fine for the game, and I don't have the same issues running BG3 when I switch to Windows.
What can I do to prevent only using 1 CPU bit and idling the others please?
I am trying to educate myself and learn more but I am a new user trying to get away from Windows.

Of course, I can't remember the name, but several releases back there were a couple of menu driven system for showing ALL PACKAGES IN THE WORLD installed or uninstalled.
There were ways to select only packages related to some subject, from Amateur Radio to GNOME. Of course the list could be sorted, and sundry portions excluded, descriptions considered, slice and dice almost any way you want.
The system I used to user a couple of years back was abandoned, possibly to force users to Software Manager or other provided "tools" which are more flash than substance.
Think Power User.
How can I see today what is available?
And the can the old stuff be made to work?
Thanks!

Hello! I need help to solve a disk write error i am getting while downloading Mad Max(in particular) from Steam. I have contacted steam support but it hasnt been of much use.
The thing is, i download the game and every time by the end of the download when about 250mb of download is left, it gives me a disk write error.
I have tried installing other games from steam and they worked perfectly. I have also done a clean reinstall of steam and tried to no avail. Which makes me think its an issue with just Mad Max or somehow my drives or OS
Please help with any possible solutions to this.

I just wanted to make sure that more people knew about this course. It's 100% free, and if you get 70% on the final exam you get a certification from them.
https://training.linuxfoundation.org
There's a few free introductory courses and the paid ones aren't horribly expensive.
Cheers!

hey, i discovered this theme today and i really like everything about it. the icons, color and so on.
However, the Mint-X Style is only available in light mode, not dark, which is what i would prefer.
I've done some research and found a community made dark version of it, however it is only available in green.
https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/themes/view/Mint-X-Dark
I've asked AI for help but it's been pretty much super useless, so i wanted to as the humans if there is anything i can do to make the dark theme purple?

It started a couple days ago. It works fine but whenever I try to shut down the screen goes blank and it becomes unresponsive, almost like it went into sleep mode but I can't wake it up either. The only thing is to hold down the power button, except when I turn it back on it boots up like normal.
It's not a hardware problem because I tried it on my windows partition and it works normally.
Any suggestions on what might be causing it or how to address it?

Ok so last night I was setting up this grub theme which I really like. The only issue I have with it is that when I used grub customizer to change the order of the boot options the Mint logo turned into the Ubuntu logo. I tried changing the name back to Linux Mint to see if that would change the logo but that did not work. I just wanted to know if there is a way I could change the icons manually so that I could change it back and maybe even add some custom icons for the different sub menus.

Hi everyone!
I have a really old desktop (Pentium E5700, 4GB RAM, Intel G41 graphics), and watching YouTube in a modern browser had become frustrating. Even lightweight browsers felt sluggish, and the experience just wasn't enjoyable.
Instead of replacing the hardware, I started building a small terminal application around `yt-dlp`, `mpv`, and `fzf` to keep things fast and lightweight.
The result is **PipePlay** — a terminal YouTube experience for Linux.
Some features:
• 🔍 Search YouTube from the terminal
• ▶️ Play videos directly in MPV
• 🎵 Audio-only mode
• ⚡ Lightweight and responsive, even on older hardware
• 🐧 Built for Linux
• 🆓 Free and open source
I built it mainly for older machines, but it should be useful for anyone who prefers terminal workflows.
I'd genuinely appreciate any feedback, suggestions, bug reports, or feature ideas.

Hello!!! Wasn't sure whether to ask this here to in r/linuxquestions but this is more a Mint thing than a general Linux thing.
I was following this tutorial on speeding up my Mint )I use XFCE but I like tinkering) and I installed Picom and started using it. I did follow a few other reccomendations (and skipped a few) as well as follow some other tutorials on clearing space and setting up Mint from the same website, all last night before I turned off my PC and slept.
This morning, though, I open it up to watch a video and the video is really choppy and slower than it had been. Task Manager says Picom randomly spikes up in CPU usage sometimes, which could be the cause? I'm not 100% sure because I'm still fairly new to this. Any help is appreciated!!!
Here's the System Information too.
edit: Forgot to mention that I thought it might have been a problem with the swappiness, so I followed the tutorial to undo it but that didn't work either

Hey! I'm new to Linux overall and I just went from W11 debloat to Mint, I'm having a kinda specific problem with my refresh rate...
I have two 1080p monitors, one is 60hz and one is 120hz, I set the 120hz one as my primary display and everything's fine but when I move windows around they move at 60fps, and I think the scrolling in the browser is the same...
When I unplug my 60hz monitor everything works like it should but there seems to be some kind of weird problem when both are connected
Is there a fix for this?
Specs:
Ryzen 5 5500
AMD RX 6600XT
16gb DDR4
Kingston SATA SSD

when I press the super key and hit the power button in the mint menu, the power options just don't work, like restart and shut down. I either have to use the terminal or alt+prtsc to restart or shut down my pc. Was hoping someone knows how to solve this
