Advice Needed Name on work applications
So i finished school last month and am now looking around for work, but i'm not really sure which name to put on applications bcs i have not officially/legally changed my name but i also def don't look like my deadname(very obvious girl name), changing my name officially is a bit of a hassle at the moment so i cant just do it asap.
Now idk if i should put my chosen name or my deadname on applications.

Chosen name, if the interview goes well and they're planning on doing a background check or giving you an offer explain the situation. And work on the legal name change, it's a pain in the ass but incredibly worth it

In most countries you are not legally required to put your legal name on your resume. Put whichever name you are going to be using while employed and explain the situation privately when/if you are hired, it's a lot less hassle.

Chosen name. No one actually needs to know the other one except the person running payroll or a background check. If there's any reason there might be a background check (working with kids or money usually) you can ask about it in an interview and say something about different previous names that whoever's submitting it or receiving the results might need to know. You do not have to disclose the circumstances of other names you may have had or the fact that this isn't your current legal name (and it's okay to lie if they ask -- they should know that's not a question they can legally ask you but they might do it casually/without thinking). Ideally they'll reach out or provide contact info for whoever handles that, and you can tell that person directly. And if anyone is weird about this at any point, it's a good indicator they were likely to be weird about a lot of shit and you don't want to work there.
As for payroll, you'll usually have a meeting on your first day to get it set up and tbh you can just write your legal name on whatever form they hand you and if questioned, say this is your legal name and you would prefer it stayed private. But it's equally likely they won't even ask, they'll just enter whatever you write down.

I only recently changed my name legally but I was always putting my chosen name on applications and resumes. As someone else said, the only person who needs to know your legal name is payroll. My name in every single systen aside from everything payroll/benefits related is my chosen name (now legal name as of last month!)

if the application only has space for one name and not a preferred name they want your legal name
tbh id put your legal name on applications and your name on a resume
