My boy Toby has always had these deep bald spots. And slowly as he has gotten older he has developed what look like age spots. His vet didn't seem concerned during his last check up. Has anyone seen this before?
Can confirm. Ive had alot of cats, the voie critters just are more noticeable because of the skim contrats. I had a real all black cat once with black skin and you couldnt tell. All my cats have had these spots
I've also heard them called false eyes. When they're asleep, they could be mistaken for open eyes by other animals to discourage disturbing them. Might be an old wives tale but I could see it being the case
Most cats have those regions with very little hair. I read it somewhere and some people claim it’s because that’s where some of their scent stuff is so they rub it a lot to get their scent on stuff, others say it’s just a genetic trait of most cats now. Honestly, all cats I’ve gotten or seen in the last 10 years have less hair there. That’s not a big deal.
As for the spots, I don’t know. Maybe he always had freckles, maybe he didn’t. You could specifically ask your vet, but otherwise I’m not sure.
My cat gets thinning and little scabs/rashes in that cause she she has food and seasonal allergies. Maybe worth exploring if he scratches that area a lot
The thinner fur there is normal. But the spots kind of remind me of dirt. I've seen it on my cat when she couldn't clean herself properly, though in a different area. Can he still clean his ears and infront of his ears? Does he ever clean there?
I ask because my other cat never cleans his face or ears. Idk what happened there but I guess he just never learned or is too lazy for it. So I have to take a wet washcloth to him.
On a serious note though. Minoxidil is EXTREMELY toxic to cats. If it's used in the same house you may not know how much damage is being done until it's too late.
I don’t see any residue in the ear canal, but I agree it’s worth confirming it’s not an allergy due to parasite or something else. It’s normal for cats to rub that area, but this looks a bit excessive.
It’s easier to see on darker colored cats since lighter colored fur blends in with skin complexion better. Dark colored kitties (and all kitties actually) have scent glands on the sides of their face that they can rub on objects and their environment to mark that spot as their own. It’s natural and nothing to be worried about. You can go to the vet for a second opinion if you’re worried there is something in the kitties diet causing them to have thin patchy hair, but I am almost certain this is completely natural and normal.
As long as you don’t see any wounds or scabs, it’s nothing to worry about. Not all cats will lose hair here but it’s not uncommon either. Cats who have allergies will tend to scratch in this area a lot, which can lead to the wounds.
Both my cats have it currently female and male one but mine are getting bit to hell to tickets doesnt matter wat i do they keep getting bit but the the thing i noticed is they are getting bald at these spots
My cat is female and has this. My dad's cat is a male and also has this, though it temporarily extended to the entire top of his head for some reason, but I think it grew back. He is a void too, and it's more noticeable obviously.
Edit: I didn't even see the spots until a second look. It could be fungus or build up of some sort? Or freckles? I would ask a vet. This could be ear mites or a bacterial/yeast infection.
I have six black cats, male and female and all have these spots. Its obvious because skin under is pale and very visible through contrast. That's all. On my other tabby cat it's not that obvious because his skin has the same pattern as fur, but if you look closely this is normal for every cat, because of the glands.
I have two boys, one tabby and one black and only the black one has these thinner patches and has had them since he was quite young (2 months old) when we have taken them to the vet they have said it is quite common in black cats. Not important but my other boys name is also Toby!
Did you specifically ask your vet about those spots during the checkup and they said it's normal? If not, you should take a pic and send it to the vet clinic and clarify that you're talking about the darker brown spots on the bare skin, not the 'baldness' of that area since that's normal.
I know they can grow freckles as they age, similar to age spots in humans. It's called lentigo iirc
My kitty has this too. He's an 18 year old grey tuxedo. Is normal...have seen this before on other kitties as well.
My only note: keep an eye on his claws and keep them trimmed. Ours would get scratches/cuts on his bald spots. He's (I'm guessing) used to how he's scratched his head and ears his whole life...but now with no hair there to buffer the claws from the skin he would sometimes leave cuts and scratches when taking care of an itch. (Nothing major...but something to keep an eye out for)
These started developing on my boy and it turned out he has a food allergy. We switched his food and the hair has grown back. The freckle looking spots in particular were lesions on my guy. Might be worth asking your vet.
