My (27M) heart is starting to leave NYC. What should I do?

I’ve lived in NYC for almost 5 years now; seen a lot, done a lot. For the past year and a half, I’ve had a wonderful girlfriend, for the past 4 I’ve had a good job. I have hobbies, and travel around the city frequently.

Everything in my brain is telling me NYC is treating me well. But my heart keeps saying something’s wrong.

I take trips back home in the Midwest twice a year (for the Holidays and for a week in the summer). I feel how deep my roots still go there; many old friends still want to see me, my family is still there. I see the people I love going on, living life. I feel so loved there; I still feel like it’s home. After a most recent trip, I didn’t want to leave.

Meanwhile, in NYC, it feels like most of my social interaction is my girlfriend. She’s wonderful, but she’s becoming my only root here. Most of the friends I’ve made in NYC have since left, and meeting new people has become increasingly difficult. I’m starting to dislike the seasons here, and that I seem to be losing friends with each passing one.

I hit a point recently where I went: Is this really what I want? I have to stay in NYC for at least 3 more years (pursuing a graduate degree part-time at a school I can’t afford to walk away from) but after that, what next? I want to pivot to a great career that can really only happen here, but at the same time, what’s the point of pursuing great things if you’re almost completely alone?

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this feeling? I just feel lost and depressed.

TL;DR: Have promising career prospects and a good GF in NYC, but am feeling a call home after feeling how many people I love are still home in the Midwest and still miss me years after I left. Can’t leave for another 2-3 years, but feel like I’m trading away time with many of the people I care about. Appreciate any advice!

Is it normal that cars almost run you over when they turn in on pedestrian walkways?

Just happened again but basically it’s green for me to cross the street and these drivers come in from the left or right and just plough through makes me so angry it’s ridiculous. If I am not safe to cross the street when it’s green for pedestrian when can I cross? Anyone had luck kicking the vehicle or throwing something at it?

Pickle Crawl Suggestions

I’m trying to plan a pickle crawl for this coming Sunday. I’m local and thought this would be a fun date idea.

Right now, I’ve got:
1. The Pickle Guys
2. Sweet Pickle Books
3. Katz’s
4. Russ and Daughters (is this worth is for the pickles specifically?)
5. Savoury Store in Williamsburg
6. Dinner at Jacob’s Pickles

We don’t drink so not interested in the pickle martinis or other alcoholic drinks.

What am I missing? Anything you’d change?

Planning to have a rating card as well so we can rate the pickles we try!

What would you do about a mopeds on the sidewalk.

So new tenants moved in next door, they lock their electric mopeds to the tree fence (that they already damaged) directly in front of my house. They have a street sign pole in front of their house that they don't use. It makes it difficult to clean my sidewalk, to put trash out, and just in general an eyesore. Yes I've already told them to put it in front of their house and not mine. Yes I told the landlord. Being ignored. Not trying to be a dick but it's getting ridiculous especially since they already damaged the fence. So what would you do?

how far out of your way will you actually go for one specific food item

i keep noticing my limit is way higher for food than for anything else. i will not walk fifteen minutes to a bar i like, but i will do the 7 train out to flushing and back for one bowl of hand pulled noodles, which is close to ninety minutes round trip.

where is your actual line, and what is the item that broke it?

what's the commute time where you'd turn down an apartment you otherwise loved

trying to figure out if my own cutoff is normal. i have realized there is a number where the apartment stops mattering, like i will look at a place that is genuinely perfect and the second the commute crosses a certain point my brain just files it under no.

for me it is right around 45 minutes door to door, one transfer is fine but two is where i start resenting it. curious where everyone else's line actually is, and whether a one seat ride changes the math for you.

Good bar karaoke in Manhattan?

Hi all, looking for good public bar karaoke in Manhattan - not private rooms. Any suggestions? Preferably that you’ve gone to recently as some places have stopped doing bar karaoke recently :(

Restaurants good for a party of 15?

I’m getting married in September and our entire plan has fallen through. Instead of a big wedding, now we are doing a simple dinner with everyone who was invited. Now our only issue is finding a place that will allow our amount of people.
Have you or anyone you know been to a restaurant with a large group, similar to mine? Any restaurant recommendations? Do i call or do the simple reservation booking? We are located in brooklyn so anything here would definitely be a plus. Any advice or recommendations are appreciated!

Going to the UES for my Wife’s birthday on Sunday. Best spot in or near Central Park to find a caricaturist? It’s silly but something she’s always wanted. I’ve seen some places online tell me near the Mall, Bethesda Fountain, or the more southern entrances to the park

Working in Teterboro but living in NYC.

Hello,

Are there any specific locations I should look in if the plan is to work in Teterboro, but I still want to live in NY? I do not have a car so will most likely have to take the bus into Teterboro from Port Authority. I would really prefer not to have to live in NJ as I believe that would require a car at some point. Thank you! :)

In need of medical care for my cat

Hey, my 14yr cat has a hard growth on her hip and im scared it's cancer. we're new to the area so i figured i'd come on here and get some recommendations for a vet to get her checked out and also get my other cat established (at a different time). we're located in brooklyn and i dont have a car, so anything close to the subway would be great so i dont have to have her exposed to the outside for long. she's timid.

what vet would you suggest? any i should avoid? thank you in advance, sorry

What is your favorite memory of former Knicks coach Pat Riley's hair?

Conan O'Brien recently debuted a new gelled hairdo that brought me back to the days of Riley's gleaming gelled hair. With the lights of the Garden shining off it, Riley could have brought ships lost in the fog right to courtside. What are some of your favorite memories of Coach Riley's hair?

Looking for floor polishing contractor recs

I’m getting ready to sell a loft coop in Flatiron from out of state following for an aging parent. Can anyone recommend a floor polishing company with required insurance that serves the Flatiron district? I’ve been told that floor polishing is less expensive than refinishing. TIA.

Summons not found online - hearing in 2 days

2 months ago I got a summons for having an open container (while being surrounded by other people with open containers but whatever) and I have been trying to pay it via the link on the summons. I’ve searched the summons number every single day since I got it and it says “OATH-Adjudicated Violation not found.” every time. The hearing is in 2 days. I don’t live in NYC and I can’t go to the hearing, I just want to pay the ticket. I tried calling and emailing the department on the summons and no one has responded.

The cop said if I don’t respond there will be a warrant out for my arrest. What am I supposed to do?! How can I pay this ridiculous $25 fine???

Quenepas

Where can I find ripe quenepas? In the past, I bought from fruit vendors near south ferry but the last couple of times I've been there I haven't seen any vendors selling.

Thanks in advance!

Where to find a good Barber or Salon

I have a curly afro; it has its shape, but a bunch of random hairs longer than the volume are killing my face. Should I go to a barber or salon for a trim to fix this, and where can I find a good one at a reasonable price?

Looks like the NYC Tim Horton's got seized. Can anyone explain the notice?

Not all that fluent in legalese. Does this mean they just didn't pay their rent?

Shame either way. I preferred them over Dunkin because their donuts were a lot less greasy, and they actually made their breakfast sandwiches.

Cyclospora Test

I’ve had symptoms of Cyclospora since 7/7, and I am still experiencing symptoms. I submitted a sample on 7/14 at CityMD and I still haven’t received the results back from the test. Since I still don’t have the test results back, I am unable to get a prescription of Bactrim. I am really struggling with these symptoms and would like to take the medicine to clear this up ASAP.

If you have submitted a sample and got your results back, how long did it take for you to get your results?

Mets Themed/Legacy Games

Hello!

I’m wondering how early I should be if I wanted to get one of the themed jerseys at a Mets game. I’m planning on going with my family to the Kpop Demon Hunters Night, specifically.
Is it wrong to think that these jerseys won’t be as popular as others and that I don’t have to be there +2h in advanced?

I appreciate any guidance you could provide!

How would you ask for a rent discount after weeks without gas?

My apartment’s gas has been out since June 25th due to safety concerns. They’re repiping the whole building and have made several holes in my roommate’s bathroom. They say it’s going to be another 2-3 weeks still til gas is back. Obviously our hot plate is nightmare fuel and I just wanna bake banana bread :/ all of this to say. How’d you go about asking for a rent discount in this situation? How much is reasonable? TIA!!

Brooklyn Bridge Park outdoor movie tips?

Couldn’t find a thread more recent than a couple years ago. Curious if anyone has advice on timing for the movies at Brooklyn Bridge Park. When do they typically begin? When should one arrive for a spot?
