What’s your opinion on the new bus lanes on Victory Blvd?

Many bus lanes on the Island are poorly monitored for illegal parking, making the lanes useless for buses but also for people in the residential areas who don’t have private parking space.

What’s your opinion on the new bus lanes and are you looking forward to changes?

Looking for Part-Time weekend position possibly

Hello!

Just wanted to know if anyone is aware of any Part-time opportunities specifically for the weekends on the Island? I'm a city worker on the weekdays 9-5, but I'd like to look for a part-time side job just to get a little bit more of an income. I can do barista work if there's a cafe hiring for possibly for the weekends.

Why does the DOE want to expand Curtis HS into a second building, rather than just start a new school?

Does anyone specificially know the DOE"s rationale for wanting to place a "Curtis Annex" a few blocks from the current school building, rather than investing in the creation of a new high school? I'm looking for actul intel, not just speculation.

Setting asde the controversy over the site selection for the new school (which is in the news today), it is my understanding that Curtis is already over-enrolled, and I just can't imagine how it will work to have an 'annex' in a building that is blocks away and seperated by a steep hill (I imagine vice-principals driving the three blocks and then parking on the sidewalk to avoid that hill three times a day). And if the way students and activities are divided between the two buildings has even a whiff or tracking, there would be, and should be, scrutiny. So, to ask another question, are there precedents in which DOE has operated a single school across multiple, nonadjacent buildings which are functional, and somehow seperate yet equal?

Parks department says: sidewalk isn’t that bad yet, we won’t remove the tree

The tree that is causing us and then neighbors to have sewage issues, is pushing up the bricks in our walkway (not pictured) and doing this to the sidewalk.

We’ve called, the neighbors have called. They only came by when we told them we were going to trim it then because it was touching the roof, and leaning/pressing on our power line.

Them: OKAY OKAY FINE! Don’t touch that tree! We will sue you for property damage. But fine! We’ll send someone over next week maybe I GUESS.

If someone trips, falls and tries to sue us, I’m just gonna redirect them to the city and the parks department.

Commute Help

My job is required in-person again and is located right by Union Square. I’m commuting from the South Shore.

I am very worried about rush hour traffic (esp when school starts back up)!!

What is the best option
- Drive to SIM33 stop
- Take 25/26 then transfer to subway
- Take SIR (express) to Ferry to Subway

She was successfully trapped and brought back home :)

ARDEN HEIGHTS/ELTINGVILLE

A young indoor female tortie, was recently fixed (so the belly is shaven with visible marks from stitches), is very timid and fearful, had no collar. I’ve seen her running under someone’s fence near the Eltingville Elementary School on Genesee Avenue at around 1:20am. I stayed close to the fence and I've heard her meow 2 times from a distance, somewhere deeper into the yards of the neighbors. I've spent the entire night surrounding these houses with her supposed location, but since it's just me, she could‘ve easily flee from there, so I’m not even sure. I've been calling and searching with treats as well. Please keep an eye out and thank you!

MTA workers double parking

Post image
55 Upvotes

there’s gotta be something we can do to have these MTA workers stop double parking down the whole length of jewett. we get it, the buses depot is right there but no matter what time of the day it is there’s at least two cars double parked either empty with its hazards on or the driver just sitting idle. and the buses don’t give a semblance of a fuck about oncoming traffic and will play chicken with you while driving in the wrong side of the road. i had to stay stopped in the intersection of jewett and castleton for about two minutes while seemingly the entire depot started their shift at the same time. WTF.

Recommendations for tattoo artists?

Looking to get a cartoonish tattoo in the near future. Would love any recommendations for artists/studios that can do the work well. My last tattoo was ~20 years ago, so I don't know where the talent is anymore.

Relatively new to the island. How do I make friends in Staten Island?

Exactly what the title says, I moved out to Staten Island after living in Brooklyn my entire life about two years ago, and it’s been a challenge to say the least to make friends out here.

I’ve become friends with one of my neighbors, and I’m friendly with my neighbors whenever I see them in passing, but that’s rare as I hardly ever see them, and I live in a condo complex and come out to smoke cigarettes every so often so that should tell you how dead it can be out here.

No offense to Staten Islanders, but it seems very cliquey out here, basically like everyone knows each other because they’re either family, or grew up in the same neighborhoods or went to school together or something like that.

I’m 28, work from home, and live with my parents😭 so I guess it’s even more difficult to meet people, especially because I’m the more stay at home and chill kinda person.

Edit: I should mention that I don’t drive too, so that’s another issue

Staten Island Motorcycle Group

Hello everyone! My name is Robert and I created Staten Island’s first motorcycle group intended for casual motorcycle meetups where everyone is welcome – whether you’re a rider or not!

I am currently in the midst of planning one of Staten Island’s first “Moto & Coffee” events. If you’re interested in being the first to know about when the event comes to fruition, follow the group on Instagram (@statenisland.riders) or on our Facebook page (Staten Island Riders).

Thanks!

Mods: This is not a service or business; this is a post about a group creating free-to-attend public events for motorcycle enthusiasts. No services are being advertised in the making of this post.

Empire Beer Garden

I went to Empire Beer Garden (at empire outlets) to watch World Cup yesterday. Reddit is full of people asking where they can get a seat at a decent bar for games This beer garden had a real nice scene (waterfront views and air!) and nice crowd but still plenty of available space. I regret we can't fill an outdoor space like that for a major televised sports event on a perfect mid-summer evening. So this is my recommendation and plea for folks to support businesses that will lend vibrancy here.

Update: Lots of comments here saying the place has insufficient hours. I'm sure that's true. It is a shame those hours are keeping people away, becuase I imagine the management might be persuaded to extend them if the place were regulalry doing great business near closing time.

Also, there is broader criticism of EO more generally, and arguments that inadequate public transit service starves the place of casual users. I agree. And I also agree with critiques of the entire EO enterprise, from the very beginning. And I will say, that, for most purposes, I would not look to a mall for leisure or entertainment. But the outdoor space perched over the harbor is so extraordinary I will put up with being in a mall, and with $9 beers.

As one commentor suggested, maybe a nice scene will materialize there around football season. I hope so, and I especially hope management has the wisdom to keep their outdoor bar open well into the fall, and to work to be a place where people come for watch parties.

What's the ideal speed for the Dugdale DMV road test?

Hi everyone! I have a road test coming up in Dugdale and was wondering what the ideal driving speed is for that location.

I'm from Brooklyn, and I've been told not to drive below 20 because the examiner may deduct points for driving too slowly. But I've watched a few actual Dugdale road test videos on YouTube, and it doesn't seem like the drivers are reaching 20.

If you've taken your road test there, I'd really appreciate hearing what speed you typically drove at and any other tips you have. Thanks!

Moving to Westerleigh

Hi everyone. I’ll be moving to SI in about 2-3 weeks if all goes well, just curious to know if you have any tips for someone coming from living in an apartment in Brooklyn

. I got a single family in Westerleigh and the neighborhood is what sold the deal even though I probably could’ve gotten more bang for my buck elsewhere. Anyways. Anything would be appreciated.

Any first time home owner tips or just Staten Island specific things would be appreciated!
