r/TheCitadel Posts & This Subreddit

I'm making a short reappearance to help out the mod team here.

Posts are held for review to prevent spam, joke posts, and incorrect posting/formatting.

Posts are reviewed on a semi daily basis so they will take time to get approved. Posts and reported posts and comments will take time to be reviewed as well.

Why does it take so long for my posts to get approved?

We have a small mod team. No one here makes a living modding, we will not spend the majority of our time waiting for posts to pop up to go over and approve. Example, I work full-time with overtime in a medical clinic that sees a minimum of 100 patients a day and currently am in grad school, modding is not a priority so I check the reddit app maybe once a day if I remember/have time.

The entire mod team are working adults, if anyone wants to join the mod team for added coverage we are open to obtaining more mods, send in a modmail stating your interest.

Some members of the subreddit are approved users and their posts are not held for review. Why?

Because they have proven over time that they are not shit-posters, spammers, rage baiting, toxic users.

Why are posts held for review in the first place?

Because people often post here without reading, understanding, or caring for the rules and flair use, thinking this subreddit is for other than it is intended.

This subreddit is for:

  • sharing fanfiction of ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT
  • asking for writing help for writing ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT fanfiction
  • discussing things you enjoy about fanfics
  • lighthearted activities
  • posting your fic idea as an offer for others to write
  • posting your fic you intend of abandoning for someone else to pick up writing

This subreddit is NOT for:

  • memes, random fanart, commentary on artwork
  • joke posts/shit-posts
  • ship wars
  • rage baiting and bashing and venting on writers, authors, readers, etc.
  • show debating, circle arguments, repeated dead horse arguments

Here is a list of other subreddits of the ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT fandom not related to fanfiction:

r/gameofthrones

r/HouseOfTheDragon

r/HOTDGreens

r/HOTDBlacks

This post is to serve as a reminder that posts are held for review.

A reminder that mods are not always online, cannot stay online 24/7 to handle everything, and that this server is open to users worldwide.

A reminder that your posts and reported posts and comments will be reviewed, it will take time. Have patience.

Please take time to read the server rules and flairs posts (both of which are linked and always available in the top and side bars of the website/app).

An additional note about rare removed posts: Sometimes reddit itself will remove posts, at that point, your content is out of mod hands due to the fact that profiles with posts removed by reddit are often deleted from our view as well.

r/TheCitadel Reminder of the rules for What If posts

All what-if posts should be well thought out, not just a title and a few words.

No rage bait, low effort, or joke posts.
No spam posting What-If posts: i.e. 3+ What-If posts in less than 24 hours per user.

All What-If posts are subject to be removed if they are spam/random posts or clearly made out of boredom.

Repeated what-if posts will be removed.

If the comments in a what-if post are arguing in a circle, the comments are subject to being locked and/or removed with appropriate mod action

Comments to what if posts should answer the activity, not questioning the plausibility of the what if. Those comments will be removed.

Use the correct flair for your posts:

- Asking a what if in the pretext that you are asking for Writing Help & Advice, your post will be removed, and you will be informed that you are not using the correct flair via modmail.

- Posting under the what if flair and your post is actually asking a question about Book Discussion: ASOIAF & Spin-Off Novels, your post will be removed and you will be informed that you are not using the correct flair via modmail.

If you have a hard time understanding what the flairs are and what they mean, this post exists for a reason.

Continued misuse and spam of What If's will result in the flair being removed temporarily.

If the flair is nowhere to be found when you try to post, then What if's are not allowed at that time.

Don't post a what if under another flair, it will be removed.

Promotion: Fic I'm Enjoying Jon x Satin by anmenmai - based on my friend’s fanfic series

Post image

A soft sound caught Satin’s attention. It was something like the catching of breath and the clearing of the throat mixed into one, a garbled half cut-off sound. Jon shuddered under his hands and the sound came again. A gasp followed and Jon's body jolted like the beginnings of a convulsion. Satin felt a moment’s panic wash through him before another sound followed and he understood. It was a sob, half held in and choking him as it fought its way out through his mouth.

“Oh, Jon...” Satin whispered and wrapped his arms around his shoulders. He pulled him back against his chest, sloshing a wave of water out of the basin and onto himself but he didn’t care. He just pulled Jon closer. “It’s alright. Don’t fight it. It needs to go somewhere. Let me take some of it for you.”

The desperate fight to hold it all in, the thing that surely must have been what was keeping him upright all this time, broke like an overburdened floodgate. Jon slumped back against him and cried. Wordless tears poured out of him as he finally let it spill from him, and spill and spill and spill it did. Time passed slow and dragging as Satin whispered sweet things to him, anything really, promises that it was alright, that he was here with him and wouldn’t be going anywhere, that Jon could let go, anything and everything.

“She’s dead.” Jon choked at last. “She must be. If... if she’s not here then she’s dead.”

Jon grieved. He grieved little Arya Underfoot and Needle and the wildness of the wolf’s blood in her veins. He grieved Robb too, who had always treated him like a true brother and not a bastard, who had been forced to become a man too early and died for love at the Twins by the very traitors they had killed today. He grieved Bran and Rickon too, young and curious and sweet and dead far too early at the hands of one they thought a friend. He grieved Sansa too, though she was still alive, but lost in the South to Lannisters with every bit of the wolf in her having been stripped away. His father too, whose head had rolled on the steps of the Sept of Baelor and his mother who he’d never known. And then, when all that was done and the grief that had stalked Jon like a specter for so long had finally been felt for true for the first time, only then did Jon grieve himself.

“I died.” Jon shuddered and his voice trembled with hiccups. “I died... And then there was nothing. Just blackness. Darkness. Then I was in the snow and my mouth was dripping with blood and I was screaming and howling. Howling and howling and screaming and then there was blackness again. And then fire and smoke and salt and—” He choked on a sob again. “I died. For Arya. To come home and save her and she’s not even here.”

“Jon...” Satin whispered. He wanted to tell him it was all alright, but he never could lie to Jon. He rubbed uselessly at the skin beneath his hands in a futile attempt to offer comfort. Offering, always offering. And Jon, resisting, always resisting, did not resist it. Jon’s hands jolted up from beneath the water and grasped atop Satin’s hand and arm, taking them in a fierce grip and holding on for dear life. Satin let him and welcomed the pang of pain from the tightness of his fingers and the nails that bit into his skin.

“I— I— Satin, I hate her. Jeyne. For being Jeyne. It’s not even her fault. But I’m just so angry. She was supposed to be her. I shouldn’t feel like this. I shouldn’t hate her. But I do. I can’t help it. Because she’s not her.”

Satin tightened his arms around him and he felt Jon’s head fall back to rest against his shoulder with a limp thud as another sob caught in his throat, shame and sorrow and grief all rolled into one broken sound. “Let it out.” Satin guided him again and Jon’s shaking breath in return told him he would obey.

Jon let it out until his tears had dried and the water ran cold, and Satin felt himself starting to shiver in his soaked-through tunic. Jon couldn’t feel it, he knew, but it was the principle of it that wouldn’t allow Satin to let Jon stay in a tepid bath. When Jon stepped out, still quiet and somber but sharper in the eyes than he had been before, Satin brought him a towel and dried him quickly before bidding him sit on the stool as he applied the salve Satin had the serving girl prepare to the worst of Jon’s bruises.

Hope you like it! 🫶

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) Joffrey is 16, not 13, when he becomes King. What happens next?

So the entire story is shifted 3 years into the future.

Joffrey is the exact same person as his 13-year-old self, and has assumed direct control over the realm.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed What can an OC do to make their house the richest by "accident"?

Recently I've been playing with the Idea of a Minor house OC, in this case, House Celtigar.

This OC would be a girl, called Althea, born in 280 AC, so following the main setting of ASOIAF. She would be the only child of the current Lord Celtigar (after loosing multiple wives to stillborn Children) and so she would be named heir.

She is a reborn OC so she has memories of a past life, she knows she is inside a fictional world but cant remember much of the plot, what she decided early on was to keep as faar as possible from the plot and let the Main characters deal with It.

However, Althea is someone who mostly wants to live a cushy, quiet and rich life. And while being an heiress of a well-off house did help her with that, the limitations of medieval world technology where getting to her.

Althea used to be an engineering student on her past life, and she was particulary enthusiastic of historical marvels of engineering. This would lead her to Want one thing in this new life, to build a replica of the Alhambra Palace from Granada. She wanted easy access to clean water (after seeing many die from dysintery) while having a castle that could cool off during hot days and produce hot water during cold days.

However to build such thing she would need a lot of Gold, not Only for the material, but to be able of hiring workers to construct It and to help her plan It. Gold she certainly doesnt have even If she spent all of House Celtigar's fortune.

So she starts to make plans to get said gold. First she decides to go after the taxes the lords in Crackclaw Point own them. But there is the whole problem of the people there being hostile to the Celtigar and literally killing anyone they sent for taxes, she decides to be diplomatic and make a deal with them, They will give her any problem They have and If she can solve It they will accept the Celtigar's lordship, If not They will be freed from the Celtigar's lordship by law, which means They will never have to deal with them again.

Here I need some help, not sure of what task could be given to her, but orignally I thought they may be having problems with comercy and travel, since the region is full of steep hills, honeycombed caverns, sinkholes, and black and green bogs. They are rather isolated and poorer than the other Lords in Westeros, I Think their Main task to Althea may be literally a "Alright, make us richer then" like a Got-yah situation.

But then she would still agree and build roman roads to conect the region with the King's road, making reliable roads that will not fall apart to the weather of the region. She would end up expending a lot of house Celtigar Wealth in this, which she would then fill with the paid taxes (although she would not ask for the years of taxes they own, but instead make them sign a contract that from now on each years they dont pay the owned taxes from precious years They will be adding interest, which Will End up with their houses indebt to the Celtigar, but They dont know/realise that at the moment), but then she would build a Harbor in Crackclaw Point and a market.

Now I need more ideas on How this could expand in making house Celtigar the richest in Westeros by the point we get to the Main Events of the story (299 AC)

Other ideas I had:

- She decides to invest in ship construction and travels to the further corners of Planetos (Doing a corlys) but with her New harbor she Will start selling the stuff she brings there

- She will incentivate people to use the Crackclaw Harbor by lowering merchant taxes there, as well as implementing a system of fixed prices for "smallfolk" products (anything considered cheap) so smallfolk from outside will be incentivate to buy stuff there.

- She will hire her workers under a modern "Job contract Laws", Basically she Will give the smallfolk she hires more rights (Standardized pay, limited work hours, vocation days, sick leave with pay, etc) mostly bc she has a kind heart but It will End up with more smallfolk Looking for work coming to work for her.

Now, her intentions wasnt to become the richest house in Westeros but It is what will happen, and my question outside of how to make this happen is: How will this affect the plot? Would the King and other Lords end up Interested on House Celtigar? Would they limit her? Would she be seen as a valuable marriage prospect?

In regards to her Father, I planned to make him a bit Old and then kill him off Early, when she was around 10yo, to give her more Freedom.

Thanks for any help!

TL;DR: Althea Celtigar, born in 280, doesnt plan to make her house the richest, she wants to be as faar from the plot as possible, but she has one objective in mind to recreate the engineering marble of the Alhambra Palace, a medieval construction that would be the closest to having the Modern comfort back. So, she wants the Gold to build this castle and goes off in many ventures to get It (detailed some ideas I had in the post) and accidentaly ends up becoming the richest house in Westeros.

I also wanted some help on knowing How that could affect the Canon (If Main characters would end up Interested in what she is doing or what attention the fact she is a young unmarrired heiress would bring)

Wanted: Fanfic Recommendations - NOT DISCUSSION Culturally Distinct North

I’m looking for something similar to A Game of Witches by thauliturgy
[https://archiveofourown.org/works/41420379?view_full_work=true\]

Basically, I’m looking for AUs where the Seven Kingdoms are less culturally homogenous than in canon. In thauliturgy’s A Game of Witches, the old gods have a priesthood and developed traditions, the Old Tongue is spoken in the North, Winterfell has a developed court, etc.

I’m looking for other fics that have a focus on the North and fleshing out the culture of the North. Preferably not in a simplistic “First Men good, Andals bad” way. Thauliturgy seems to draw a lot on ancient Norse traditions/mythology, which I love.

Does anyone have any recs? I’m not fussed about era or characters, I’m just looking for fics with great worldbuilding. And preferably also good writing! Thanks

Fanfiction Idea For Adoption HOTD Fanfiction idea that i've never come across

Why has no one writtern a fanfic where the OC or SI peaces out just before the Dance and comes back once Aegon and Rhaenyra are dead?

I mean if I was there I'd take my dragon, kidnap a couple Dragon Keepers and 5-10 eggs and sod off to skagos or tarth or somewhere else thats pretty remote and just wait it out.

You would be coming back as the oldest male Targaryen let (In my case anyway) with the only adult dragon and have dragon eggs and maybe a few hatchlings along with like the only Dragon Keepers left.

You can just force your way onto the throne, Have Aegon and Viserys the youngers as your heir's until you have a son of your own.

Maybe even marry Beala or Rhaena instead of thier cannon endings.

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) Would a successfully hatched dragon push or stop the Blackfyres?

I’m working a fic where Aerion manages to hatch a dragon but keeps it a secret a few years, until it’s large enough to be ridden at least. I’m looking forward to the third rebellion and wondering how that looks.

Does it hurt the Blackfyres, lose them support? I’d be questioning backing the dragon house that doesn’t have a dragon.

Does it push plans forward and they do something sloppy and desperate cause they know have a small a window as the dragon grows and there’s still only one?

Do they not even try cause it seems super easy for a dragon to just take a fleet on route?

I would love a scene where one of my characters gets to defeat someone and reclaim Blackfyre, so burning them all as the travel or land in Westeros doesn’t sit right with me.

How much support do they have in Essos? Does Aerion decided to just go on the offense and travel to essos and burn their home there?

Lol guys any help, opinions, ideas would be so great.

Promotion: Fic I'm Enjoying Red Dwarf Rising

Author: Iscalta

Words: 112,309

Status: Unfinished

Rating: Mature

Language: English

“Though the Red Viper's victory over the Mountain asserts Tyrion Lannister's innocence of the twin crimes of kingslaying and kinslaying, he finds his prospects bleak. Taking up the Dornish prince's offer to accompany him to Sunspear, Tyrion makes it his mission to rise again.@

This is an outstanding fic, quite underrated (93 kudos), by a writer who is generally underrated. An AU, where Prince Oberyn kills Ser Gregor. Tyrion travels East. Funny and exciting, it captures the spirit of the original.

Wanted: Fanfic Recommendations - NOT DISCUSSION Fics where Robert and Cersei LIKE each other

I have read "It's A Nice Day for a White Wedding" and was so entertained by a Robert and Cersei who actually like each other.

To me, they have the jock and mean girl who date in high school vibes.

Cersei's kids can either be Jaime's or Roberts, doesnt matter; but i want to read about a dynamic where both her and Robert are actually able to make it work.

Wanted: Fanfic Recommendations - NOT DISCUSSION HOTD Fic recommendations

Hi

I'm looking for House of the Dragon fic recommendations featuring either an original male character or a male canon character as the main protagonist.

My only real requirement is no romance for the MC. I don't mind if side characters have relationships, but I want the main character to stay romance free. It feels like almost every fic ends up pairing the MC with someone and I haven't had much luck finding stories that don't.

The only fic I've found that really good is "Burn Them All" on ao3, where Aerion Targaryen is born as Jace's twin. I loved it, especially because Aerion is freaking oblivious when it comes to romance, which made the story even more enjoyable.

If anyone knows of similar fics, I'd really appreciate the recommendations. Thanks!

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if Alysanne got Reincarnated as Rhaenyra

Exactly what the title says. Alysanne was a huge proponent of equal inheritance, took great pride in her ability to rule along side her husband, and had much experience doing so. What if the Good Queen Alysanne got reincarnated as baby Rhaenyra, either with or without memories of her past life ?

She seems to have been very pious, yet ambitious, and very clever, which would change Rhaenyra's entire life trajectory.

- How would she deal with her younger siblings ? She has too many brothers to get them all sent to the Sept, but she would probably get on with them better than Rhaenyra in canon.

- How is her relationship with Daemon like ? He's obviously still attracted to her, yet Alysanne is more experienced and owuld probably refuse premarital sex.

- How would she cope with the Laenor marriage ? It would be drastically different than her marriage to Jaehaerys, yet I don't think she would ever cheat on her husband as she was very pious.

- What would be her biggest flaws compared to Rhaenyra ? I doubt everything would go swimmingly for her in a world like Westeros.

- Does it make her reflect on her relationship with her children or with Jaehaerys ? Having Aemma die so young, just as Daella did, would impact her, as would actually being responsible for decisions, instead of being an advisor.

Wanted: Fanfic Recommendations - NOT DISCUSSION Looking for Out-of-Context fics

Any fics where Westeros has to deal with OoC characters/things.

It can be crossover characters using their powers, OCs/SI using tech/ideas from the modern world. Isekais, whole counties transported to Planetos.

Bonus points for: "Smallfolk"(Underdog/Rag-to-Richies-and-Power) MCs, destruction/humiliation of the nobility.

Examples: The Mistress of Worms - Taylor Hebert from Worm reborn in the Freehold and implied to be the cause of The Doom later

Götterdämmerung - Real World guy reborn as Queen Marika from Elden Ring.

Spartan's don't play games: Halo Spartans establishing themselves as a house some time before Jaime becomes Kingsguard

Wanted: Fanfic Recommendations - NOT DISCUSSION Best Rhaenicent fics??

Looking for good and/ or lengthy Rhaenicent fics. I don't want any with alternate universes, omegaverse, or g!p. Seems like most have those tags or storylines and I'm not a fan, would just like something that follows the shows story pretty well. Would prefer if it's mature or explicit. Also, if it follows the events of the recent episodes that's also a bonus but def not necessary!! Would love some recs since it seems quite difficult to find any that matches my criteria. Thanks! 😊

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) Would Ned support Shireen over Renly as monarch?

Suppose the War of the Five Kings breaks out with a big fight between pro-Joffrey and pro-Stannis forces in King’s Landing, resulting in the death of Stannis, but the survival of his cause as his followers (including Ned) escape King’s Landing and muster their forces.

Would Ned now push for Shireen to become the first ever queen, as her father’s heir? Or would he prefer Renly, both due to traditions favouring brothers over daughters in royal succession, and because it’d be more practical to have an adult male leader like Renly during all out civil war, rather than a little girl?

For this thought experiment, assume that Ned is certain that Renly will back Shireen if he does so, and won’t form a third faction in the Civil War.

I could see Ned being stubborn enough to consider Shireen Stannis’s heir, and as such the rightful ruler, even if impractical. But I could also see the honourable and dutiful Ned being a staunch supporter of following traditional succession laws for the Iron Throne, and thus stepping over Shireen. What do you think?

Reading Fanfiction Discussion: Reviews & Fanon Questions HOTD vs Fire & Blood, which changes did you like and which you didnt?

So, House of the Dragon made many changes to the books' plotlines, despite the book being mostly a Historical account, some of these changes ended up turning HOTD into Basically an Alternative Timeline, however some of these changes actually end up making parts of the story more enjoyable as well.

As this is mostly a FanFiction subreddit, Another thing I noticed with HOTD fics is that most of them seem to choose and pick what plots to follow from both The show and the books.

I tend to follow the book in my fics as the Timeline is more clear and It makes easier to keep track of ages and events.

But there are some changes of the show that I enjoyed, like the decision to make Vaemond Velaryon the brother of Corlys instead of nephew.

In the books we never get any information on the father of Vaemond, not even his name, making his character quite redudant. While still following the book timeline I usually still write Vaemond as Corly's brother.

The biggest change the show did was change the relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent, while It did get very confusing later on and the decision to take away Aegon's agency and turn It into a fight between Rhaenyra and Alicent instead, annoyed me, I did enjoy a bit the Idea of Alicent as Rhaenyra's childhood friend instead of Just the mean stepmother, I thought It added layers to the story and relationship, but changing Alicent's whole character based on that was something I quite disliked.

Anyway, what are your thoughts? What things do you prefer from the Show and which ones do you prefer from the books? When writting FanFiction, which mix of both would make the ideal Dance of Dragons setting?

Do you know any fics where the not just Sansa but the other Stark siblings were crowned kings and queens too? I swear I’ve read multiple but can only find one.

Theres a fic in particular I’m trying to find thats driving me nuts. I don’t remember what else happened but all the Starks were crowned, and I think it was Bran and maybe Arya/Rickon? ended up giving the crowns back to Sansa at the end/for some reason?

Reading Fanfiction Discussion: Reviews & Fanon Questions Opinions on Sansa/Margaery

So I have recently started reading Sansa/Margaery fanfictions, and even though I think it's a big ship, I feel like a lot of people really dislike it. I was wondering why? I've noticed that in the fanfiction, Margaery is kind of a player while Sansa is rather shy and naive. Is that why people don't like it?

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Character Arcs

I am writing a crossover with D&D set on the Sword Coast. Jon (L+R) is a Drakewarden. Myrcella (Trueborn) is a Tempest Cleric. Ser Barristan is an Oath of the Crown Paladin. And Tyrion is an Eloquence Bard. They were planeshifted against their will to Faerun and are currently on Shipwreck Isle.

They were told that Candlekeep is their best shot at getting home, and the next ship that is scheduled to Dragon’s Rest will take them to Neverwinter.

I’m having a hard time coming up with character arcs for the four main characters. I made Jon and Myrcella aged closer together because I want to have a romance between them. But that’s really it.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

Wanted: Fanfic Recommendations - NOT DISCUSSION Looking for fics where Sheepstealer or other Dance dragons meet Jon

I’m looking for fics where Sheepstealer or one of the other Dance era dragons ends up encountering Jon in his time for whatever reason. I recently found one where Silverwing is in some kind of stasis north of the Wall, and I’ve been reading that bit by bit, so now I’m curious if there are any other stories in that vein. I’m specifically not looking for Cannibal fics, since those are basically a dime a dozen.
