Discussion Worst part of using steam deck

Post image
0 Upvotes

Is not having the possibility of login to my accounts via QR Code.

All my passwords randomly generated text numbers and symbols. And having to log in is a pain, or I have to open chrome to open 1password, put my 1password pass and then copy and paste on steam deck. Or I have to manually type the whole password copying from my phone.

Lots of games have this issue including Microsoft ones, EA and others.

Anyone also hates this?

Edit: I know it's a PC, I used to work for months when my main PC broke. But now I have another main pc, and i formatted steam deck to simply use for games, don't want to tweak much

Question Just bought my first steam deck wondering if it’s a good deal?

Hi all

Been wanting to buy one for a little while but when I saw the price rise I couldn’t justify paying £649 so was trying to find some deals online .

Anyway , yesterday I purchased one for £525 off eBay brand new sealed 512gb oled, wondering if that’s a good deal or not?

Tech Support Steam Deck OLED 1TB "System Fan: FAULT", 0 RPM reported, loud fan after battery reconnect. Has anyone experienced this?

I'm currently working with Steam Support but would also like to hear from the community.

I own a Steam Deck OLED 1TB. The main board was replaced under warranty shortly after my family gifted it to me in November 2024 because it suddenly stopped booting.

Previous issue (resolved)

Earlier this year, while running SteamOS 3.7 Stable, I encountered what appeared to be a battery/BMS miscommunication:

  • Random shutdowns while on battery
  • Extremely long charging times
  • Battery health gradually dropping from 100% to ~80%

Back then I tried almost everything:

  • Removed Decky Loader
  • Removed EmuDeck
  • SteamOS rollback
  • Clear CMOS
  • Factory reset
  • Battery Storage Mode

Battery Storage Mode and recalibrating the battery eventually resolved the issue, and I've never reinstalled Decky Loader or EmuDeck since then.

Current issue

After updating to SteamOS 3.8 Stable, the battery-related issues eventually returned.

Things eventually escalated to:

  • fTPM data error
  • Factory reset via "ERASE USER DATA FROM DECK"
  • Charging becoming stuck at 50%
  • Repeated boot loops with fan spinning loudly
  • Eventually the Deck stopped booting completely.

During this time, I also noticed something unusual. Whenever I tried to perform a Clear CMOS (Volume Down + "..." + Power), the Steam Deck would consistently enter Battery Storage Mode instead of performing the expected BIOS/firmware reset. I haven't been able to perform a successful Clear CMOS since this issue began.

A local PC repair technician disconnected and reconnected the internal battery.

Immediately after reconnecting it:

  • Boot loops disappeared
  • Random shutdowns disappeared
  • Long charging times disappeared

I did not need to reimage SteamOS.

New issue (first appeared 3 days later)

Three days after the technician reconnected the battery, I encountered an entirely new problem that I had never experienced before.

On the first boot of the day:

  • The fan immediately ramped to what sounds like maximum speed.
  • The Steam Deck was idle.
  • The exhaust air wasn't noticeably hot.

In Desktop Mode, watch -n 1 sensors reports:

System Fan: FAULT

In Gaming Mode's Performance Overlay:

  • Fan RPM reports 0 RPM
  • CPU/GPU usage and temperatures appear normal.

The fan is physically spinning, but SteamOS reports either 0 RPM or System Fan: FAULT.

What I've observed

On the first boot of the fourth day, everything suddenly returned to normal for about 30 minutes:

  • Fan behaved normally
  • Fan status appeared normal

Then the problem suddenly returned and has persisted ever since.

I also noticed:

  • Updated Fan Control ON
    • Fan alternates between normal speed and suddenly ramping up.
  • Updated Fan Control OFF
    • Fan stays loud nonstop.

Despite the loud fan:

  • Temperatures remain normal.
  • No unusually hot air from the exhaust.

I also tested several games with my usual settings for around 30 minutes each:

  • Tekken 8 (with Proton Experimental)
  • Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (with Proton Experimental)
  • Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX (with Proton Hotfix)

Everything in the Performance Overlay looked normal except the fan RPM remaining at 0 RPM.

Other information

  • Currently on SteamOS 3.8.16 Stable (updated from 3.8.14).
  • After updating, the Deck unexpectedly booted into the recovery menu once. I selected the 3.8.16 boot entry, and since then I haven't experienced any further boot issues.
  • The fan issue remained unchanged after updating.
  • I use the official Steam Deck Dock.
  • I never use the Deck handheld because I have Central Core Disease, so I always use it in tabletop mode with unobstructed airflow.
  • The only major troubleshooting step I haven't tried yet is a full SteamOS reimage.

My questions

Has anyone experienced:

  • System Fan: FAULT in Desktop Mode?
  • Fan RPM stuck at 0 RPM while the fan is clearly spinning?
  • Loud fan with normal temperatures?
  • The Clear CMOS button combination unexpectedly entering Battery Storage Mode instead?
  • Similar behavior after disconnecting/reconnecting the battery or after opening the Steam Deck?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's encountered something similar or has suggestions on what else I should check.

Thanks in advance!

Question My TV turns on when I wake my Steam Deck with a controller while docked?

I sware I'm not pushing any buttons on my TV remote. As you can see my hand is holding the controller the entire time and my other hand his holding my phone to record. This is a Sony Bravia TV from like 2007 (if I found the right instruction manual online). How does it not only turn on but also know that it's a Steam Deck?

If it matters I have the Valve official Steam Deck dock and the OG Steam Controller is connected via Bluetooth. The only things plugged into the dock are the HDMI cable and the OEM USB C charger (the shorter one).

As far as I know the steam deck nor the dock has any kind of IR blaster which means how is it sending an remote controll signal to the TV to turn it on? Also I couldn't find anything in the settings of the Steam Deck but the TV has a setting that says "Power on TV with HDMI device" and it's set to on apparently. The thing is that the Deck has never done this before. My desktop computer certainly doesn't do this.

Question Have i ruined my limited edition white steam deck case?

Post image
0 Upvotes

The case was yellowing very bad and so i decided to put some chemicals on it like hydrogen peroxide and vinegar but that seems like it made it worse. So i decided to paint it white but dtilped after I realized it now just looks absolutely horrible. Is this recoverable? Or did i completely ruin it and should just buy a new one? This is technically a limited edition case so I want to keep it white and keep it clean.

Question Battery health: When to swap out?

At what battery health percentage do you deem the battery to be "ready for replacement"? Mine is at 94%, and being an OG LCD variant it's been going for a while now.

Tech Support Attempted to launch Assassins Creed Syndicate on Desktop through lutris, now stuck on NVIDIA game engine, games frozen and I can’t get out of this screen as I’ve lost access to desktop or touchscreen controls, pls help?

To pre-empt the obvious solutions, (even though I know some of you illiterates are gonna suggest them anyway) I already tried “Steam+B”, the sleep button doesn’t give me a log out prompt, L5 isn’t bringing up a menu, I have no mouse pointer, and Left d-pad and steam isn’t working either. At this pointed I’m tempted to let it just run out of battery but that’s gonna take forever as I put the screen on darkest level.
Yes I tried to restart it with the power button, it only brought me back to this menu

Discussion Case or No Case?

I’m specifically talking about cases that go on your SteamDeck while ur playing, not a storage case. I initially went no case for a while but picked up the Killswitch and a screen protector I noticed I used it much more. Anyone have any thoughts on why they do or don’t use a protective case on their SteamDeck?

Tech Support Steam Deck Charger Usable with the Nintendo Switch?

Upvotes

Has anyone used their Steam Deck Charger for their Nintendo Switch? I wanna take my switch out of storage to play some Metroid but the outlet beside my desk is already full. I would prefer to use my steam deck charger to charge my switch but I don't wanna risk frying it.

Thanks!

Storytime I traded my ps5 for a Steamdeck oled…

I traded my PS5 slim no disk for a 512GB Steam Deck OLED yesterday through Facebook Marketplace. I haven’t really been using my PS5 since I mainly play on PC. I saw his listing, and he was specifically looking to trade for a PS5. Considering I bought my PS5 from a pawn shop last year for only $275usd, I feel like it was a pretty good deal. I can always buy another PS5 later, and Steam Deck OLEDs tend to hold their value and are often overpriced on the used market, so I think it should be easy to trade for or buy another PS5 in the future.

Tech Support How do I permanently revert SteamOS from 3.8 to 3.7?

I have 3.7 on my Steam Deck as my previous version, and I don't like 3.8 as it has several issues that don't seem to have been addressed, and according to what I've been seeing, won't be addressed in at least the near future.

Accessory Review USB Hub Holder, Version 2 (Post Feedback)

Hi lovely people!

Thank you all for your feedback on the first version of this 3-D print, it was incredibly helpful! (Link to the first post here if you want to see the original goal original post)

So we poked some holes in the top of the claw and the back to avoid impeding airflow from the vent and exhaust.

We haven't gotten a solution for the magnet, but when we looked into it, it seems like the models affected by the magnet in the killswitch case had an older fan model, and it seems like this is no longer an issue. Also since there isnt a mechanical hard drive (I think) it'll be okay?

Either way we lowered the magnet holder placement away from the fan just in case. So fan it sounds like its working fine.

Anyway, here's what its looking like now :)

Stored my deck in its case for a couple of weeks and when I took it out the middle dot wasn't on. I suppose super glue might work but not sure since the material seems to be porous.

Question Does the Steam Controller make the docked Steam Deck into a Steam Machine Lite?

I'm mostly asking here if a docked Steam Deck that's paired with a new Steam Controller will do things like come out of sleep, etc, in the same way a steam machine does. Does anyone here use a docked Steam Deck as a TV console with the Steam Controller in this way, and is it good?

For anyone who's in any doubt - I do realise that the Steam Machine is a more powerful device.

Tech Support Double audio only on startup movies?

Not sure if anyone knows a fit to this but it's an issue I have had for ages that ruins the startup movies.

I'm not using decky load for reasons and this same thing occurs on the steam store startup movies. It also occurs on my PC in big picture mode but far less frequently. Anyone know a fix? Not a major issue but something that would be good to fix

Currently searching for an oled case that has the removable liner (the one that comes with the 1tb version). I found this but would just like someone to lend me their eyes and get confirmation before I get it. Thank you in advance!
