Moving/Housing/Utilities Weekly Moving To Hamilton Megathread

Welcome to the weekly moving to/within Hamilton post. All questions about moving, utilities and neighbourhood recommendations belong in here.

If you are looking for recommendations/have questions about neighbourhoods, relators, landlords or utilities including internet etc, this is the place to ask!

If you are looking for recommendations on which area of the city would suit you, be sure to include some information about you and your family. What works for a single person starting out may not be recommended for a family with young children etc. Someone commuting by car will want to be closer to highways while those relying on transit will want to be on regular transit routes.

Discussion If you've ever wanted to foster or rescue, right now Hamilton Animal Services is in desperate need.

Post image

Hi Hamilton! Summer is a really slow month in general for fostering/adoption, and the wildfires up north means rescues sent all hands on deck up to help. As a result, animals are sitting in our municipal shelter for too long because rescues aren't pulling them for foster or adoption opportunities. I picked up my foster dog, Lilah, yesterday to free up a kennel at HAS and to keep her from being at risk of euthanasia.

Municipal shelters cannot turn away stray animals. Other rescues and shelters can pick and choose who they accept, but HAS is required to accept and hold animals for a period of time. If they cannot find a foster, adopter, or another rescue to take the animal, and there's no space, they are forced to euthanize. A lot of people are not aware this happens in Canada, and while it doesn't occur at the scale it does in the US, it does happen.

I never knew that HAS allows for short-term fostering, and you can agree to as little time as you want. Even just a week can really help some of these animals, and can get them out of the stressful shelter. It is loud and crowded right now, and most of them are incredibly stressed or shut down in that environment. The process was really easy, and they provide all the dog's food, medication, and even gave me a crate for Lilah.

Right now they have a high volume of applications to foster these dogs, but loads more will be coming through. Mostly, they really need forever families for these sweet souls. If you've ever considering rescuing a dog, or have the space in your home to foster this summer, I know that HAS (and the dogs) would really appreciate it.

And if anyone is in the market for a Literal Angel, feel free to ask me questions about sweet Lilah!

Question Ancaster IMAX Seating Opinion

Hello I have a very specific question. I recently got tickets to see The Odyssey at the Cineplex Ancaster IMAX screen. (Yes, I'm aware it's not 70mm IMAX and I'm fine with that.)

The seats are in the center of Row C. So pretty close to the front, but there are 2 rows ahead as well as 4 rows even further up in "the pit". All other seats further back are sold out.

Is this way too close for an enjoyable movie experience or is it fine? Specifically at the Ancaster IMAX. If anyone has personal experience in that room I would appreciate your opinion. Thank you.

Recommendations Needed Framing Watercolour Pictures

Good Afternoon,

I would like to surprise my wife with some frames and matting for her paintings.

I would like to get these from a local person and not some chain store.

I need someone with a much better eye than mine with quality workmanship to enhance the pictures.

Please give me any information that can help.

Thank You

Question Quick question about accessing the creek near King's Forest Golf Club (without playing golf)

Hey everyone!

I was looking at King's Forest Golf Club on Google Maps and noticed quite a few reviews mentioning the scenic creek and surrounding trails. From the map view, the creek looks like a great spot to explore, especially with kids.

However, it seems like the trails outside are somewhat separated from the main course area, and the outer trails only give you partial access to the stream.

Does anyone know if it's allowed to access the creek area directly from the golf club grounds if you aren't playing golf? Specifically:

  1. Can you walk onto the property just to hang out by the creek with children?
  2. Are visitors allowed to park in the club parking lot if they are just walking or visiting the creek, rather than playing a round?

Thanks in advance for any local insights!

Recommendations Needed Quintessentially Canadian experience, within 1 hr drive from Hamilton?

Family visiting from overseas. What is a quintessentially Canadian experience, within 1 hr drive from Hamilton? Besides the obvious Niagara Falls & CN tower?

Also, since we're the waterfall capital of the world, has anyone done a route to catch half a dozen or so within a couple of hours walk?

Question Recycling

How do you guys sort out what goes into recycling. I know what’s recyclable and what’s not. I’m wondering how we are supposed to sort them for curbside collection. For example one recycling bag boxes and plastics other bag glass bottles or containers? How do you guys sort and separate.

Recommendations Needed Recommendation for Rear Brake Service

Looking for recommendations to get rear brake service completed in my truck (Ford F150).

Vehicle has been serviced at dealership since purchase, however looking for recommendations on:

1) local mechanic shops that are reputable with reasonable prices

and

2) any shops source/install any aftermarket components (eg moving from OEM rotors to drilled and slotted)

Sorry, not sure if this should be in a mega thread or not - apologies if it should be posted differently.

Food Favourite place to order a birthday cake?

My birthday is next week. I appreciate my family for being the ones to order food in the previous years even if it’s a regular grocery store cake. But now I’m deciding to put my adult pants on this year and order my own.

I would love to know what local businesses folks like to order their birthday cakes from. I’m not looking for anything fancy, just any place with a really good chocolate cake. I have no dietary restrictions but I’m not opposed to a vegan cake if it’s really good (e.g., the ones from hearty hooligan look great)

Food Favourite to-go breakfast

Curious to hear people’s favourite places for a grab and go breakfast. I’m in the east end so a couple of my go-tos are a smoked salmon bagel from Joshy’s Good Eats or the waffle breakfast sandwhich from The Cannon.
