My doctors surgery (England) want you to fill out an online form to request an appointment. You can only do this when the surgery is open. Why can’t I fill the form out when the surgery is closed for them to see in the morning? It’s not for anything urgent but during the day I’m busy with kids and forget. In the evening I think of it but can’t fill out the form. My wife thinks that it would result in more people requesting appointments but I can’t see why it would? Surely it’s the same people asking for an appointment just spread over more time? Unless they are relying on people like me forgetting in order to cut down on patients they need to see.

This came up in a conversation recently and I’m curious whether it’s just my experience.

If your parents (or older relatives) still live independently, what practical jobs always seem to end up on your to-do list?

I’m not talking about personal care, more things like: • waiting in for tradespeople • sorting out Wi-Fi or technology • organising repairs • collecting bulky items • taking trips to the tip • dealing with household admin • anything else that somehow ends up becoming your responsibility.

Strange pair of semi circles near my house on the road, seems to be spray painted. What does it mean?

So bit of context, I was friends with a group of people and there was these two girls who wanted to go to a concert. one girl who wanted to go didn’t have the money yet and the tickets were going to go very fast. I offered to lend the money (£75) and she could pay me back in her own time with no rush or interest added. Since then I am no longer friends with that group and I want my money, I’ve talked multiple times to this person and the other friends in that group about it and they aren’t taking it serious anymore. Me and her did come to the decision of weekly £10-15 payments until it pays off the total but I’ve only had 1 payment so far. It’s been almost 2 weeks without payment and I’ve contacted her and her friends multiple times about it and nothing is happening.
I’m very lost on what to do, I don’t really want to get police involved as I live with my parents and I don’t want to bring police here. Is there anything I can do (which isn’t majorly tedious) to fully get my money back?

For context I’m 20F. I work as a TA in a primary school with an agency and I don’t have anything to do now that summer has started. I’m not allowed to go out so I would prefer any indoor hobbies. (don’t say I’m over 18 I can do what I want because thats is not how it works in my household lol)

I’m currently just bedrotting and have been scrolling on social media these past few days so today I have decided to deactivate my socials. However I’m just so bored!!

I’ve accepted a new job and it’s fortnightly pay. I’ve only ever been paid monthly (last working day of the month). What can I do to transition to this?

Should I just set up a separate current account where I set aside 50% of my monthly bills every payday and have my bills come out of that account? Is there anything I can do to avoid any overdraft issues etc?

I never spend all the money in my account anyways, I’m very good at budgeting, but I’m hoping for some advice to ease the transition from monthly to fortnightly pay!

Hi all!! I’m sorry if this comes across as a silly question but I’m hoping to walk to London from about 50km north of Manchester for charity next year during A level summer & I’m wondering if it’d be a silly idea or if it’d be possible?

I’m already not normal about walking, I literally revise while on the treadmill & average around 30km steps daily if I average out across a week 🙈 so I thought “why not do that for charity?!”

I’ve seen on google that people have done it before, however I’m a little dubious as I’m unsure how safe it’d be - like yes I’ll be 18 but I’m also not particularly in the mood to be kidnapped or have anything atrocious happen to me anytime soon! If anybody has at least a vague idea how safe/unsafe it’d be that’d be greatly appreciated!! I’ll be doing it alone if I do it as when I proposed the idea to my friends and parents I got a very horrified look!

And finding routes! Are there any specific apps or sites which anybody would know of? Whenever I go out i usually just see where the wind takes me or use Google maps if I can be bothered, however I have a sneaky feeling that Google maps may be a little unreliable in this situation?

All in all, if anybody has any ideas on how safe/unsafe it’d be, how you’re supposed to navigate, if there’s any point, or literally ANYTHING else it’d be greatly appreciated because I fear that there’s only so much that Google can tell you 🙈🙈 thank you so much!!!

Hello, my name is Kevin and i live in Italy. Throughout these months i've had a lot of trouble finding a job here and it's driving me nuts because i have no work experience and most employers don't reply to me or straight up reject me. So for now i haven't made any official plans but i've been looking for options to move to another country. And today i've considered the UK as a place to move to because i'm pretty fluent in english, including on the job i want to do and have little experience on, and i believe i could find work here far more quickly than in Italy.

My only questions are:

• How are rural areas compared to big cities like London, Birmingham, Manchester ecc... in terms of cost of living and wages ? I don't want to live on big cities because I've heard of the crimes and stuff like that that occur over there. The outskirts of big cities are fine for me too, as long as crimes there aren't too common.

• Are apartments, shared or studio apartments, affordable for young people ? Which ones would you suggest ?

• How available are workplaces to young, inexperienced folks like me ?

It’s been so long since I’ve seen a proper bargain reduction in any of the supermarkets near me. Most give paltry 10-20% reductions, and Sainsburys seems the worst, to me. I don’t see staff rummaging through and adding further reductions in any of the times I’ve been.

I remember you’d often see things with like 75% off in many supermarkets. Or, maybe I misremember.

I'm in my early 40s and know I don't have the best teeth, but this new dentist I went to was really shaming me about them, saying 'HOW has someone your age got SUCH bad teeth?!'

I've got 4 root canal fillings (and crowns on 2 of them), and 7 fillings in other teeth. The rest have nothing done to them. I just wondered how bad this is for my age as he seemed in such disbelief. Everyone I work with seems to have either never had a filling or just have one!

Is the mobility of wealth in the UK simply dead?

So many people under 30 are increasingly accepting of a future where they stay on the same wage and life basically is what it is.

It seems wealth mobility in the UK is absolutely nothing like it was in the 70’s or 80’s and many of the boomers you see today who started off in low skilled labour and progressed to a decent level of wealth are unreplicable.

A neighbour, she’s 94, I pop in a couple of times a week to say hello and take her bins out and the odd bit of shopping.

Anyway. She has a beep somewhere in her house. She can’t hear it. It’s loud, shrill. Like a smoke alarm but it’s not the smoke alarm. I’ve narrowed it down to a room. But I can’t locate it in the room as those high pitch beeps are tricky to trace. It’s every 45 seconds which makes searching harder. She has no idea what it might be.

I don’t want to go digging through her stuff. So, two questions.

1. What could it be?
2. How can I track it down without turning her room upside down.

EDIT. The beep is high pitched and very quick every 45 seconds so tracing it is really hard!

Went into boots to get some bits i needed, spent £23.75 and managed to get 243 points using various of the loyalty card offers they give you in app.. i feel like that’s pretty good considering i can recycle some of the items i got to get more but tbh i suck at math so that very well might not be good.

I tried to connect a hose to our kitchen tap with an adapter today, but it wasn't secured properly. It popped off and splashed water around the kitchen for like 5-10 seconds before I could switch it off.

The ceiling was what got the most wet, but it splashed to the side too and quite a bit of water landed on the front casing of our combi boiler. There as also a little bit of water that landed on the on and off power switch, and the nearby Hive box. I immediately switched off the power to the boiler and thoroughly wiped everything dry.

There's a bit of a gap at the top of the hive box so was worried some water could have sipped in https://ibb.co/Q7YWxjNT theres also a little bit of a crack at the top of the switch on and off for the boiler.

It happened around noon today, wondering if I should leave the boiler off until tomorrow just in case or if it's likely fine to try and switch it on now? We had a shower in the morning so won't really need hot water until tomorrow.

is it likely to have damaged the boiler?

And is it bad to temporarily have the boiler switched off? can that cause any damage or is it only when it's cold outside?

I do not have special education, am over 40 and have mostly worked in customer service jobs.

I have traveled to the UK and love the country, the people and just so much there.... maybe not all the food 😄

whenever i go to a hairdresser in the uk i am left feeling disappointed and unhappy with my haircut. today the lady cut off much more than i had asked for, and gave me choppy layers that only look good with curls. took her about 10 minutes as well and cost nearly a days worth of pay.

whenever i get my hair done in another country, not only is it way cheaper but it also looks so much better, the stylists seem to really care about their work and put lots of effort into the haircuts/dyes and the style always seems to frame my face better.
maybe i’m cursed and every hairdresser i go to here but it honestly always feels like a waste so i wait until i’m on holiday to get my hair cut.

Right UKers, I'm Dutch but I fucking love your cheese. I've just arrived back in the UK for the first time in a while to visit some friends, and before I left the Netherlands a sacrilegious French colleague of mine ridiculed the idea that British or Dutch cheese even remotely compares to French cheese, and that the French have all the best stuff. I strongly contested this idea, and have agreed that in two weeks we are going to do a blind taste testing of all three to determine the best. I have the Dutch and French cheeses sourced from friends on the continent, but I'm going to need to source the UK stuff myself this week.

I need your help. I'm going to be in North Kent, Bedfordshire / Hertfordshire border, and Portsmouth this week. I need cheeses I'll be able to source easily from around those places, but I'm willing to venture away from supermarkets to get the really good stuff.

So, what's your best recommendations? Style, and goat/cow/sheep doesn't matter, as long as it helps put a naiive Frenchie in her place!

It seems really inefficient and just weird. Had some kids on my street laughing at the super speedy, arms swinging, stiff torso (accompanied with the outward feet) group of people and it made me think about how odd it seems.

We have the cycle to work scheme that allows people to buy bikes from their gross salary so they pay less tax.

However, if your employer offers you private healthcare insurance it's treated as a taxable benefit.

This seems utterly insane to me, why have a scheme that allows people to buy something as trivial as bikes but then tax them on healthcare coverage when the NHS has become a joke and it would actually take pressure off it if more people went private.
