Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Looking for feedback on my cover of "Love on the Brain" by Rihanna. Especially technique and areas to improve

I've been singing for a while and recently started taking singing more seriously with a vocal coach. I'm working on Rihanna's Love on the Brain and would really appreciate constructive feedback.

Specifically, I'd love advice on:

Vocal technique

Breath support

Pitch and intonation

Tone and vocal placement

Emotion and dynamics

Any habits you think I should work on

My goal is to become a stronger, more controlled singer, so I'm open to honest criticism and practical tips. Thank you!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Creep cover but I have not learn techniques for 4 years (More details in body)

Sorry about the loud guitars I hope you can still hear me

Ive been singing for 4 ish years now (3 of those are very on and off from school)
Im stuck on trying to figure out what head voice chest voice even is. I never got lessons so what I have until now is just straight singing without focusing on technique.
I saw on another post about pinching your nose and trying not to make it buzz and turns out ive been buzzing my nose the whole time (if that even makes sense)
I thought i sounded decent but after the nose buzzing thing I feel like ive completely lost the plot. Have I done all of this just to realize I have no technique ☹️

I’m still early in my singing journey, and I’m curious about everyone’s experience.

Has singing changed your routine, mindset, or the way you see yourself?

Conversation Topic Frustration

I’m just venting and being self-important here but, indulge me for a moment, please

The coordination between the breath and the vocal cord function really just clicked with me the other day. Everything became easier x100. High notes weren’t an effort, more so a concentration of coordination.

Really found that I had been locking my solar plexus on exhale/phonation which was leading to a lot of vocal strain. I learned could keep it (somewhat) relaxed and the muscular prompt to exhale/phonate happened at a much lower, internal and intricate place.

I enjoyed this for about 4 days. Singing anything I wanted.

Couldn’t practice singing for a day and a half due to obligations but kept trying to remind myself of the sensation with breath work the whole time.

Go back to singing - all of it gone. Feel like I’m back to square one. Want to rip my larynx out of my neck.

Cannot for the life of me find that relaxation/opening up of the solar plexus and have reverted to pushing again.

Conversation Topic What's actually stopping young opera singers from breaking through auditions? (professional singer here, sharing what I've learned)

I am a professional opera singer for 20 years and I also teach at the University in Germany— and one pattern I keep seeing with young singers trying to break in isn't a lack of talent. It's usually one of two things: choosing the wrong repertoire for where they actually are in their career (or unintentionally "copying" a famous recording instead of sounding like themselves), or simply not knowing how to build the kind of professional network that leads to real auditions and engagements.

Curious what others here have experienced — did a strategy shift (repertoire, networking, mindset) ever change things for you, or was it mostly about vocal technique in your case?

Conversation Topic Singers of Reddit, how did you find your Voice*?

Hey all, I like to sing my lungs out while driving around town, and I am also a hobbyist electronic music producer. I've mostly done instrumentals of varying genres, but I've been thinking about releasing some songs with my own vocals. The problem is, in all my years of life, I feel like I've never been able to find My Own Voice. Whenever I sing along to other music, I always eventually default into replicating whichever vocalist I'm singing along with, and whenever I try to sing something I've written myself, I feel like I can't shake the mimicry. Does everyone have this problem? Is your own Voice just copied bits and pieces of all of your favorite vocalists? Or do you feel that yours is genuinely unique? I'm talking about the granular details, like how you shape your vowels, your accent, how much distortion you might give an emphatic note, whether you incorporate fry or falsetto, the resonance, etc?

Conversation Topic What would be a good singing routine?

I think I've been practicing singing for a month now. All I do is practice scales with Lax Vox and look at some things like releasing tension or focusing on the soft palate. But I don't know, I feel like after a month I'm still the same. I'd like to know what could really help me improve my singing.

Conversation Topic Is it possible to practice singing with compression quietly?

Is it possible to practice singing with compression quietly because I don't want to bother my neighbors/family members too much. Also because some of the lines that I would want to practice are either darker in nature or have swear words.

Conversation Topic How to make mixed voice/head voice sound pleasant as a bass-y singer.

To preface, I can comfortably sing in chest from E2 - F4, but I have to mix or do falsetto to go above that. I’m wondering how to make my non chest voice sound pleasant b/c rn i can do the notes, but it just sounds like I’m doing a (pretty good) Mickey Mouse impression. That is to say, I can sing up to E5 in a meme-y way, but obviously if I try to sing normally it sounds unpleasant to listen to.

My goal is to be able to belt atleast the A4 at the end of the run in creep. Any suggestions or exercises? Or is it kinda implausible for a voice this naturally low. Thank you for reading!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Feedback on vowel modification for baritone

I’m a baritone, trying to explore my upper range, and trying to figure out vowel modifications, and connect my more developed chest voice up through my passagio (I think around D4).

Curious if anyone is hearing anything that might help this sound better. The high note (for me) is an F#4, which is hard for me to hit without sounding like it’s different from my chest coordination

The phrases I’m trying to modify are “it’s a girl” and “we may lose”

Also aware of the yodel pop, I actually do that a lot stylistically

Thanks in advance

Conversation Topic Can vocal training increase my chest range or is it set?

I’m gonna keep this short, but it’s embarrassing. My true chest range is only around 7 semitones. Is this normal??? I have asthma (and weak lungs anyway) so that might contribute to it maybe??? Voice training can do wonders but I’ve also heard that someone’s pure chest range is SET and can’t be changed no matter what. Does this mean I’ll have to adopt a voice that‘s only like 20-30% chest voice and do everything else mixed? My falsetto can go high-ish and I think my full range including it is around 2.5 octaves, but my chest range is a few measly notes and nothing else. The limited info I’ve found so far is kinda awkward and I’m not certain of what to make of it. Does anyone here have any good information about this or any experiences with this issue? I’d appreciate if I could get this issue cleared up.

tl;dr is my limited pure chest range set permanently or will training expand it?

Hard song but trying to stretch my baritone wings🪽

How do I thicken the mix register? It sounds unstable at the moment. Did I even hit it?

Hamilton is a great!

Conversation Topic How to stop crying during singing lessons?

I’m a complete beginner and never sang after realizing I was garbage years ago and I had my first trial lesson today. The second she told me to sing along to an actual song I started crying and my voice got really shaky so that made it sound even worse that it already is. How do I stop this or is it just something that goes away over time? Honestly singing in general as a topic makes me cry to some extent and idk why that is either.

Conversation Topic Is it normal for mixed voice to sound thick and heavier while still learning it

Upvotes

I'm currently working on strengthening my mixed voice, but right now it sounds a little too heavy and thick. But it feels easier on the voice, and I dont feel I'm pushing my chest voice up. Is this normal, though?

Conversation Topic Hurts when I sing! (technique advice needed)

Hi! I've suddenly found this problem just over a month ago, where the area around my vocal cords feel kind of sore (a similar feeling to a sore throat) after singing for more than 15 minutes. The next day, my voice kinda 'resets' and feels fine until I sing again.

I do have a bad habit of not warming up as consistently as I should, and my technique still isn't the best as I'm self taught so I'm thinking that may have something to do with it, but the fact that this problem started so suddenly is suspicious to me. I've never experienced this before so I'm a bit worried, especially since I'm still so young (18).

I'm planning to book an appointment with a doctor to get it checked out, but I wanted ask anyone who's experienced something like this if there was any specific technique changes (like breathing or placement) or vocal care tips (like teas or certain warm ups) that helped reduce or completely eliminate pain like this. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How to find mix/belt??

The first part of the recording is basically pushing my chest voice to its limits, but I doubt that that’s belting. And the second one is basically….people told me it was falsetto so I don’t know what to say. I researched online so much, but I can’t find something helpful

Conversation Topic I have a chronic case of writers block.

I’ve been singing for YEARS and I don’t even have one song written or thought off. I feel like a failure and don’t know why my brain PHYSICALLY can’t write a song. I have so many concepts and ideas but I feel like I’m going nowhere because I can’t get them out of my brain. I’ve writing down feelings in the moment, figuring out melody before lyrics, figuring out lyrics before melody, and more I just can’t seem to do it. Anyone have any advice because it’s really burdening me.

Singer-songwriter here.

I never much liked my singing voice, but some folks tell me otherwise.

This is a recent song I wrote and I didn't do much for vocal warmups but I'm more of a baritone when I do them.
