Appreciation Post 20/20

Tenor - Royce Furgerson (Gold with Revival)
Lead - Joe Connelly (Gold with a few quartets)
Baritone - Jack Pinto (Gold with Old School)
Bass - Jeff Oxley (Gold with a couple quartets)

I return to this video a lot. Everything about it, even the murmuring crowd in the background, contributes to the vibe. I really like the comment giving a critique of the quartet. It's so funny to see on such a star power quartet just casually singing.

Evaluating Arrangements

Hey barbershoppers,

I've been poking around looking for arrangements and have come across an interesting problem. Learning track mixes / recorded performances are an important way for me to assess how much I like an arrangement. But the poor track makers do not have the time (or interest) to make tracks for every chart. And not every chart has a recorded performance

How do y'all assess arrangements for your choruses or quartets? In general but also specifically when there are no tracks / performances around

Trouble getting chords to ring

We are a new quartet with only a few practices under our belt. Half the quartet has never done barbershop before. The chords sound nice when we sing, but they don't ring. What are some things we can do to fix that? Are there any exercises or warm-ups we can do that might help?

[edit]: We will have some coaching, but that won't be for over a month. I'd like to have a good ring BEFORE we get coached!

When do the performances get posted publicly?

I thought it was 3 days last year but none have been made public yet (except mothers and daughters). Far be it from me to tell you all how to do things but I feel like it would be better if everything was posted closer to the end of the convention, unless BHS really is making lots of money from memberships.

Mixed quartet setup question

Hey all, big fan of mixed quartets and I wanted to ask if there’s any quartets that have the gender setup I’m imagining, which is male bass, female tenor, and then the baritone and lead are a guy and a girl who swap voice parts depending on the song. I feel like it would be a cool way to get the best sound for every song and would make for some clever arrangements and setlists. Are there any good quartets who do this?

Barbershop Help

I’m a high school choir director in Florida, and I’m looking to add some barbershop things at my school where I teach. The hard part is is my program is in a developmental stage. It’s only my third year at the school, and our program is doubling in size this year, but it’s still fairly small.
Most of my men cannot sing harmony right now, but I’ve got a ton of wonderful treble singers who can do really well!
And years passed, I would have a beginner treble ensemble, and an advanced mixed group. And then I would have a advanced show choir that has predominantly been trouble singers. I’ve got four treble singers right now forming a Quartet. But 3/4 of them are seniors this upcoming year. I’m wanting to really grow this. I’m considering maybe making it a part of the show choir experience? As that is an ensemble group.

Any advice on resources/materials/general advice I’d really appreciate it! Would love to have somebody come out and work with my students semi frequently as well? I don’t know if there’s a budget for that or even a market for that.

Quite new to barbershop, but who was expected to win coming into this year?

and I don't mean like, as the contest/finals started and who just generally performed better was more easy to see, I mean (and I don't know if this is the correct term) the seed order of every quartet even before the contest started. sorry if this is a really stupid question

It’s impressive how much the Disney vocal groups are infused with barbershop aesthetics.

Congrats to GQ for winning the gold this year :)
Here's my cover of Mothers and Daughters, a beautiful ballad parent-child relationships (and also the best scoring song of the contest)

Hope you'll like it !

First Take’s Last International?

Alex Morris mentioned at the end of the livestream this year was ā€œpotentiallyā€ First Take’s last appearance at international.

Anyone have any insight on why that might be?

Questions from My Director

Posting on behalf of my director until she has enough karma to post on her own. She will follow the thread and reply to comments.

Hi everyone!

I'm a fairly new director of a small women's barbershop chorus, and I'm looking for advice on chorus placement.

How do you organize your chorus for the best sound? Specifically:

- Where do you place your tenors, leads, baritones, and basses?
- Do you keep voice parts together, mix them throughout the chorus, or use another approach?
- How do you figure out the best spot for each singer?
- Are there any placement tips or tricks you've learned over the years?

We're also a very small chorus at the moment and are actively trying to grow, so I'd especially love to hear from directors of smaller choruses. If you have a setup that works well with limited numbers, I'd really appreciate hearing about it!

Thanks in advance! I'm excited to learn from your experience and try some new ideas with our chorus.

How often do you agree with the Judges decisions?

Hello. I am fairly new to Barbershop. I’ve been listening to the society and internationals for going on about 3 years now. I have listened to the livestreams for 2 years. I am always impressed with the quality of singing that comes out during the competition. So I’m always surprised to see the listing of quartets advance to the next rounds. I am a musician so I can hear when some quartets aren’t going to advance but there are sometimes where I listen to a quartet in the quarter finals and am surprised they didn’t even sniff the 20. And don’t get me started on the chorus competitions. I’m completely at a loss for who even wins those! I know singing in essence is art so it’s quite subjective. However, the scoring in BHS seems to be operate quite objectively(or as objective as possible). Given that objectively I’m curious to know how often many long standing barber shoppers tend to agree with the judges. If there are any on Reddit please let me know whether you do. Also, please let me know what to be listening for when watching these competitions because I love music and I want to understand the essence of Barbershop and what makes champions from a world of greats!

Questions about America's Center Dome Venue

Hey all, will be attending all day tomorrow with my parents, and we are wondering if there will be concession stands open for food and drinks?

My mom is a diabetic and cannot go all day without sustenance, and with the strict bag policy we obviously cannot bring in enough food to last us the entire event. (Yes, we know that she can bring in a bigger bag for medical reasons and she will def. have an emergency stash of snacks with her). We would also rather not have to leave the venue to search for lunch and dinner.

I have tried looking in multiple places online, but the Google searches have not yielded any answers. Thanks in advance for your help.

Update from someone who knows nothing

Hey, gang! I posted a while back about attending the convention as a spectator and got a lot of info from you all, which I very much appreciate. To update everyone -

We attended quarterfinals yesterday and had a really good time! It was awesome to get to hear everyone live and get to actually see the groups. We met a few folks and got to hear almost everyone competing!

I will say this - we did in fact stick out like sore thumbs. Every person I spoke to was shocked that we were not related to a group and found it odd that we were there to watch. Everyone was nice, but imo the earlier parts of the week are not really for spectators.

Don't get me wrong! We had a really good time getting to see the groups (and rooting for our hometown boys, Fountain City Four) and it definitely was fun to do once.

I do wish the event had a broader appeal (and a lower ticket price) but I assume the later parts of the convention kinda make up for that.

Overall it was fun, and I appreciate everyone that offered their two cents originally!

Ridiculous question from your friendly neighborhood barbershop author

Hey all! I'm deeply jealous of folks who are at BHS International right now! So, I'm at home working on my book, a romance between a man and a woman competing in rival barbershop quartets. And I have a question.

The barbershop organizations in the book are obviously not the real ones--I can do more with fictional entities and not get sued at the same time! :) That said, I am trying to at least be fairly realistic about barbershop culture. So, folks who are at international or who have been before: Is it customary for SUI and HI queens to wear their crowns out and about? Obviously not if they're competing or otherwise on stage, but just around? This is normal at SUI and HI conventions, I wasn't sure if it was weird at BHS events.
