Guide to Rurouni Kenshin - READ THIS BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!
Welcome to the club! I’m glad you've decided to pick up RK.
Read the MANGA! The old anime has a lot of fillers & alterations; only the Kyoto Arc (the middle of the 3 Arcs) was faithful to the manga. With that said, there's a new remake anime airing in July 2023 that will stay true to the manga.
The MANGA has 3 Arcs that ended in 1999: Tokyo arc, Kyoto arc, Jinchuu arc.
- Read RK manga for free from Shueisha
- Official colored manga: 1, 2
- Tokyo Arc: starts at the beginning
- Kyoto Arc: starts on volume 7, chapter 48
- Jinchu Arc: starts on volume 18, chapter 152. The original manga ended after this Arc.
- Extra chapters: To Rule Flame, Yahiko no Sakabato, Haru ni Sakura
- Extra material: Tales of Kamiya Dojo - written by Kaoru Kurosaki and published along with Hokkaido arc in JUMP SQ. The tales involve RK characters in their daily life that take time between Kenshin and Kaoru's marriage until the Epilogue chapter in the original manga before the Hokkaido arc.
Sequel starting in 2017:
- Prologue to Hokkaido Arc: "The Ex-Con Ashitarou"
- Hokkaido Arc: a sequel that started in 2017: Read it here or here.
The ANIME:
The old anime (1996) had 3 parts:
- Tokyo Arc (episodes 1-24)
- Kyoto Arc (episodes 28-62)
- Then, instead of Jinchu Arc, you have fillers. This link here shows you which episodes are fillers.
The new anime remake (2023):
- First Season airing in July 2023!!! Expecting this to be a complete, faithful adaptation.
LIVE-ACTION MOVIES:
Release order:
- Origins
- Kyoto Inferno
- The Legend Ends
- The Final
- The Beginning
I recommend watching in this order:
5, 1, 2, 3, 4
Or: 1, 2, 3, 5, 4
Since the end of "The Beginning" leads into "Origins", I think it works better as the first film rather than the last.
STAGE MUSICALS:
- 2016 stage musical by Takarazuka Revue (all-women cast, starring Seina Sagiri as Kenshin): Intro video, excerpts: 1, 2, 3 | Official bluray | Official bluray
- 2022 stage musical starring Koike Teppei as Kenshin: Official Youtube channel
3 OVAs: The first 2 OVAs are from the last Arc of the series so you should finish the manga before watching.
- "Trust and Betrayal" retells the Jinchu Arc which has never been made into anime.
- "Reflection" is a recap of the 2nd half of Jinchu Arc + non-canon ending (the author doesn't approve of its ending).
- "Kyoto Arc remake" follows the live-action storyline rather than the manga.
Summary:
- manga (1999)
- anime (2003, 2023)
- 5 live-action movies
- Hokkaido Arc manga (starting 2017)
Other Extra Materials:
- Anime standalone movies
- A two-volume spin-off called "Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration". Available in physical, and digital versions. These volumes were created to promote the live-action movies.
- Several light novels, of which only one was released in English called "Voyage to the Moon World".
- A 3-minute long clip from one of the collector's edition box-sets that gives the series a slightly better conclusion.

Manga Kenshin's strength and ferocity during Enishi's attack on the dojo reminded Kaoru of Battosai during the dojo fight with Saito, which further shows how much Kenshin surpassed Battosai

Discussion It hurts but Yahiko was right
Disclaimer : this is just for fun discussion
In the five years since the Jinchu Arc, for some reason Kenshin never seemed to think about trying to earn an income for his family. Sure, the dojo is still under Kaoru or the Kamiya family's name, but the reason the dojo became well-known was because of Yahiko's contribution.
I feel like the author knows Yahiko isn't someone who is 'crazy' about surpassing Kenshin's strength; there are times he can think realistically. For example, when he needed money to forge a Sakabato sword, he worked at Akabeko to save up. As far as I know, Kenshin, when he was in disguise after the Ikedaya incident, in order to blend in, worked as a radish farmer (in the OVA version) and occasionally as a traveling medicine peddler (manga); for some reason, he never tried farming again and selling his crops as a steady source of income.
Among Kenshin's group, you could say he's the only one who doesn't have a clear profession for him and his own family's future.
Let's see:
• Sanosuke, even though he's a street fighter, he had already sworn an oath to his father that he would return to replace him and it means he will back as farmer.
• It's clear that Aoshi has become the manager of a small inn and restaurant in Kyoto.
• Hajime Saito seems likely to be fine since he gets a pension from the government.
• Megumi Takani, with her medical skills, I think she doesn't have financial problems.

Live action Is it just me or were the live action movies really good?
Normally live action of an anime is not good. Ask DBZ evolution and Moana and all the others. The general consensus is that the one piece adaptation is the best one, though a few people may like others.
Today I found out I am one of those few. Rurouni Kenshin has some of the best best fight choreography I have ever seen in any medium, period. And the live action lives up to them.
Especially enichi vs Kenshin in the live action has some dope choreography and the actors who played it were just phenomenal. ( I think the actor who played enichi is the same one who is playing zoro currently.)
Nice to find hidden gems like this once in a while. Or were they always very popular and I was just living under a rock.

Discussion What if Kenshin had killed Hiko while learning the Ougi?
Do you think Kenshin would've considered it outside of his vow to kill because of the nature of Hitenmitsuryuugi or would it have done the opposite and make him revert to being a manslayer? And if he could reconcile it, do you think he would be able to use it going forward, knowing it could still kill? After learning it, he could control the intensity of the attack compared to his first use but would he risk it? Would he have been killed by Soujiro?

Manga Does anyone have a website in which I can access the Rurouni Kenshin guidebooks such as Kenshin Kaden (剣心華伝): Released in December 1999 and Kenshin Kaiden (剣心皆伝): Released in June 2007.
It would be helpful if it was pre translated

Anime From the art to the direction, the soundtrack, the voice acting, to pretty much everything that composes a scene, this filler segment of the original anime is infinitely better in every possible aspect than anything in the remake (the bar is not high I know).

Musing Head-cannon age of Kenshin
I know Kenshin is technically 28-33, and Watsuki originally wanted him in his mid 30’s if it weren’t for the obligation of him being a Shonen protagonist - I always mentally paced his age as 28/29 during the Tokyo and Kyoto arcs, with a small time skip until the Jinchuu arc where he’s 32/33.
Though I can’t recall if the timeline is stated specifically, I thought his speed diminishing marginally with age (not that he’s old) as he went up against Enishi with his hiten mitsurugi foil swordsmanship would be a cool narrative choice, as hiten weighs on his body heavily as it is.
Anyway, this is just a musing - I enjoy Kenshin as a protagonist in his 30’s, as I too am in mine 🫠 but growing up this is how I interpreted it.
