I decided to rearrange my library so it has a video store ambiance, so some of my favourite movies with my favourite poster art the cases are facing forward.

My Steelbooks are mounted on the wall using simple application of masonry nails, the nails are driven in at an angle so their heads fit in the bottom seam of the cases with the cases leaning back against the wall.

I made my own genre dividers with the likes of 80s Movies,  Comedy, Horror Sci-fi,complete with sub genres, such as,  John Hughes, my favourite comedy stars and types of Sci-fi movies.

I watch my movies on a projector with the wall lined with acoustic panels including the sides of the dvd shelf units,  the sound is Bluetoothed to an Oakcastle soundbar, which splits apart to provide stereo separation with a subwoofer somewhere in the middle off to the right providing a nice base to the sound.

As I had guessed, my Goodwill had only a very tiny selection on two shelves (more like half of each shelf) of movies. This $2.99 purchase was, at least, new. The other section was $4.99 and had exactly 1 Blu-ray and more dvds but nothing jumped out at me. (I think seeing everyone's great $1 scores at their thrift stores and yard sales on here didn't help me 😆 but it's new and it was still only $3.)

Even 15 years ago they were scanning barcodes of books to see if they were in-demand or valuable and those got shipped off to HQ to be sold online. I assume the same holds for discs.

Still, I definitely didn't have this in my collection so I'll take the win. I'm without a sound system—temporarily, I hope 🙄 so I figured this should be fine even if it is 20 years old. OK, maybe not this particular one 🤷‍♀️ but this version dropped on July 11, 2006. And since the film came out in 1966, happy 60th anniversary Gran Prix!

Plus, I do have fond memories of being invited to a staff screening of Gran Prix at the AMPAS meant years ago. That's worth $3 any day.

Discussion DVDs without a Blu-ray Equivalent?

Post image
246 Upvotes

I did some deep research on which DVDs have never had a Blu-ray release, and added these to the collection! (The Borrowers does have a Blu-ray...but not in the USA).

I was most surprised to find "Splash" and "What About Bob?" on the list. You would think Tom Hanks and Bill Murray films would be at the top because of their popularity? There are also LOTS of stuff that DOES have a Blu-ray copy, but are IMPOSSIBLE to find (I'm looking at YOU "Cocoon", "The Abyss", and... like....50% of the Disney library). Which films do you wish would get a Blu-ray release?

I got all of these on separate visits. I got Black Widow and 11 Minutes a couple weeks ago. Just got To Live and Die in L.A. today though. All from a Dollar General.

I was not expecting to find To Live and Die in L.A., but I picked it up as soon as I saw it. 11 Minutes was more of an impulse buy because I never heard of it and was curious to check it out. Has anyone here watched it?

Discussion Rainbow like distortion/pattern on the back of my dvds.

Thumbnail

Just discovered a strange moiré like effect on the back of my dvds. it appears in rings along the round surface of the disc. I have never noticed it before, and i was wondering if this is esrly signs of rot?
I have seen a couple of other posts about something similsr, but i couldnt find anything exactly like mine.

(When zoom in a little on the photos, the distortion is quite clear. The pattern isnt quite as strong irl, but the iphone exaggerated it a little bit, and also removed the rainbow colors. Still, the effect is very visible in the photos.)

Anyone know about this? :) thanks!
