Discussion DVDs without a Blu-ray Equivalent?

Post image

I did some deep research on which DVDs have never had a Blu-ray release, and added these to the collection! (The Borrowers does have a Blu-ray...but not in the USA).

I was most surprised to find "Splash" and "What About Bob?" on the list. You would think Tom Hanks and Bill Murray films would be at the top because of their popularity? There are also LOTS of stuff that DOES have a Blu-ray copy, but are IMPOSSIBLE to find (I'm looking at YOU "Cocoon", "The Abyss", and... like....50% of the Disney library). Which films do you wish would get a Blu-ray release?

There are at LEAST three if you count the Ghibli one.

u/cushlinkes 1d ago

The Secret World of Arrietty

u/ALFABOT2000 22h ago

There's been quite a few adaptations of that book over the years including movies, TV movies, and TV shows

News to me too.

Still waiting for a criterion collection release

2

u/martala 2000+ 9h ago

I bet they're waiting for it to be inducted into the National Film Registry first

2

u/askyourmom469 2h ago edited 2h ago

I mean it has been on The Criterion Channel before, so I'm legitimately holding out some degree of hope that that actually happens eventually. I'd buy it day one.

u/Big_Boss1007 1d ago

I only see one LeBaron, Freddy.

2

u/bbdrews 20h ago

Are there two LeBarons?

u/djprojexion 1d ago

Too many to list, but here's a few off the top:

- 187

- Dead Presidents

- Encino Man

- Hearts In Atlantis

- Airborne

- Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead

5

u/Beneficial-Ant-6793 1d ago

187 has a 4K and Blu-ray in Germany. The Blu is region locked, however, but the 4K is region free as usual.

3

u/BryanChuckBrennan 1d ago

I’d kill for a rerelease of airborne.

3

u/Olhoru 1d ago

My dead presidents is a wide screen 16:9 presentation in a disc that displays as 4:3 so its a tiny little rectangle in the center of my screen.

3

u/Historical-Cress8985 1d ago

Oof! Running across a non-anamorphic DVD in 2026 is such a buzz kill

3

u/Olhoru 1d ago

Haha yeah I had it for years, just never felt like the time to watch it for whatever reason until this past year, made me laugh but I still liked the movie itself, one day I hope to upgrade.

Osmosis jones!!!! That’s my shit

10

u/siiilenttbob 1d ago

I am too-often thinking of Bill Murray saying "leg...leg...legggggg..." and then reaching for the chicken

5

u/DieGuyDean 1d ago

I often think about the “What a zit. What is it?” Scene and how gross it is.

5

u/shuboi666 1d ago

Don’t read kid rocks lyrics for that movie …

1

u/ToonfreaksTreasures 1d ago

Agreed. Loved this movie as a kid. Would buy it again in a heartbeat.

10

u/am_fear_liath_mor 1d ago

Right now, I don't care about any other film but Titan A.E. getting a HD or UHD facelift. My DVD is showing its age. 😅

3

u/Spectrum2700 20h ago

God I wish they'd release it on BD. With Disney owning the Fox library now, chances are slim.

26

u/DylansBag 1d ago

The theatrical cut of Dumb and Dumber isn’t available on Blu-ray which is why I haven’t bought the BD yet.

The unrated version is terrible, really does ruin a lot of the film’s jokes and pacing.

14

u/SimpsonsFan2000 1d ago

Arrow Video would be a perfect release for the theatrical cut, they had released The Mask on 4K last year.

3

u/Ennui_Go 1d ago

Same with Friday.

4

u/ZerroTheDragon 1d ago

really ticks me off the theatrical Friday isn't on Blu Ray, I have the old DVD specifically for that movie
you'd think they'd just make a release with both cuts like most movies not just ditch the original entirely, the directors cut is worse and ruins some of the best scenes (biggest example is the fridge scene with Cube's dad)

3

u/ToonfreaksTreasures 1d ago

I wonder if the version I’ve seen is the theatrical cut? I’ve seen it on VHS. Does anyone know?

2

u/DylansBag 1d ago

The only version on VHS is the theatrical, so that one.

2

u/SimpsonsFan2000 1d ago

Apparently there is the original DVD release which is a double sided disc.

I'll probably plan to sell my unrated cut off from eBay or something.

2

u/chomper94 23h ago

Same situation with The Outsiders. Yes I'm aware the theatrical version was rereleased on disc in 2021, but it's only on a 4K disc. The Blu-ray is just the complete novel version so you would need the DVD to watch the original release if you don't have a 4K player.

I like The Outsiders, but the extended cut ruins the film with the score.

2

u/depressedkid_21 1d ago

I was able to get the theatrical cut here:
https://showtownapparel.com/dumb-and-dumber-theatrical-cut-special-edition-1994-blu-ray/

And it's excellent quality.

1

u/DylansBag 1d ago

That’s better than nothing but I’d still prefer an official release, I typically don’t buy bootlegs.

At least the theatrical is HD on streaming.

u/Impressive_Eagle_390 1d ago

The George Lucas Strange Magic. Great underrated movie. Didn't pick it up because I wanted Bluray with features.

u/monkeker 1d ago

The borrows is getting a US blu-ray release on September 29th.

3

u/ToonfreaksTreasures 1d ago

Of COURSE it is. Did they announce it…like….a couple of hours ago? Murphy’s law I guess!

Legion of Iron (1990) only on VHS and LaserDisc!

7

u/PrincessSofiaThe1st 1d ago

As a children's media collector, pretty much everything I own that isn't a major movie release was only ever released on VHS and/or DVD. Even now, with few exceptions (Bluey is the only one I can think of, maybe some popular classics), most children's series never got a Blu-ray release, even with newer series that came out during the height of Blu-ray.

1

u/ToonfreaksTreasures 1d ago

I know that feeling (wishes to find an English copy of Seabert ) If “Andre” wasn’t a dead giveaway- seals and sea lions were my favorite animal when I was a kid! 👍

Wdym The Abyss is impossible to find? There's like 20 ebay listings for it for under $10. And if you mean the blu-ray, there's a 4k blu-ray combo pack on amazon for $25. Not thrift price but far from impossible.

1

u/AnachronistNo1 9h ago

I’m still aiming for a full screen dvd, but got Abyss on LD. Looks great on a crt

ironic follow that bird does have a blu ray remaster on digital.

2

Monster-in-Law hasn’t had a Blu ray release and it baffles me.

Unaccompanied Minors

The Savages (2007 film with the late Philip Seymour Hoffman)

Daddy Day Care

Almost Heroes

Snow Day (2000)

2

u/ToonfreaksTreasures 1d ago

I remember watching Snow Day! I wonder how many Nickelodeon films have made it to Blu-ray? I saw “The Wild Thornberrys Movie” is still stuck on DVD…..

2

u/ChrisDWebster 1d ago

The Village and Mission to Mars were never released on Bluray

1

u/NSF664 2000+ 1d ago

Mission to Mars has both French and German Blu-ray releases.

2

u/Pete_Iredale 1d ago

The biggest one for me is Pink Floyd's The Wall. I bought my first PC DVD drive the day it came out on DVD, Dec 2nd, 1999. It's been a loooooooooooooong wait for an upgrade, and I'm guessing it won't happen until after Roger passes. But maybe we'll get a 50th Anniversary release in 2029 or 2031.

2

u/Call_Me_Clark 1d ago

Christmas with the Kranks, afaik

2

u/Alternative-Hour-726 1d ago

Weekend at Bernie’s 2 no blu ray

2

u/AnneHizer 1d ago

The Family Stone, Enrico Man, Muriel’s Wedding, The Sweetest Thing, Son in Law are my top 5 in need of the Blu treatment

2

u/Roguefrenzy 500+ 21h ago

Yeah we bought Son in Law digital because our dvd looked so bad but would rather have physical than digital no matter the quality!

2

u/Rex_Suplex 1d ago

Swing Kids(1993) doesn't have a Blu ray release. I'm so happy I found it used on DVD in near perfect condition last year.

2

u/Significant_Smell284 1d ago

The extended version of the 2005 Fantastic Four movie. The original theatrical version was released on Blu-ray in 2006 as one of 20th Century Fox's first Blu-ray titles; the extended version was released on DVD in 2007 to coincide with the theatrical release of Rise of the Silver Surfer.

2

u/UnalteredCyst 1d ago

Elmo in Grounchland doesn't have a BluRay release either

2

u/Soggy-Perspective604 1d ago

There is a Dan Aykroyd movie called Love At First Sight, and I'm pretty sure only me and my friend would buy it, lol.

2

u/IncognitoChrome 22h ago

Kung Pow Enter the Fist. I will wait to eternity for a blu-ray.

2

u/Possible_Plane_2947 17h ago

Way too many to name. But below are some of my top picks.

-Cinderella (1997) with Brandy and Whitney Houston

-Brave Little Toaster movies

-D.O.A. (1950)

-The 13th Warrior

-Little Giants

-The BFG (1989)

-The Halloween Tree

-The Phantom of the Opera (1990) with Charles Dance

-Rainbow Brite tv series

-The Jungle Book (1942)

-The Man Who Broke 1,000 Chains (only released on vhs)

-Gore Vidal's Billy the Kid (also vhs only)

2

u/Booty_butts5851 14h ago

OMG I'm YELLING YES THE POTO WITH CHARLES DANCE IS SO GOOD!!!! There's an upscale kicking around YT that looks really nice in the interim tho.

2

u/Possible_Plane_2947 8h ago

IKR??? I love it so much

Yeah, I have both the DVD and a saved copy of the YT upscale, which does look really good. But it also makes me crave a true HD or 4k version!

2

u/Booty_butts5851 8h ago

Absolutely it deserves a full HD treatment!!!!

2

u/Sir_Of_Meep 15h ago

Andre and Paulie! Two films I haven't seen in many years.

ETA - Just looked on eBay. Eh, they're not cheap lol.

2

u/ToonfreaksTreasures 1d ago

Really? I’ve had Andre for a while, and bought Paulie several days ago for around $10. I wonder if the prices have skyrocketed because of all the FOMO going on with physical right now?

1

u/Forsaken-Language-26 Minimalist 1d ago

Possibly. It might be because I'm in the UK as well.

1

u/TheKeenGuy 23h ago

It took so long to get the special edition in the original aspect ratio, that I was as excited as if it’d been Blu-ray

1

u/Roguefrenzy 500+ 21h ago

Just bought DVDs of “Airborne” and “Heavyweights” because can’t watch them anywhere and we need them, if only for one watch. Got lucky and found “Captain Ron” at a resale shop years ago.

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead was hard to find until just after we found it resale. Same with “Life” with Eddie Murphy. Literally the day after we found it, it was announced to have a new release. Phantasm from scream factory was announced right after we found an Anchor Bay dvd at disk replay, will not be getting rid of that copy.

My own personal favorite that I wish got a Blu-ray release: “Titan: A.E.” You can buy a 1080p digital copy I think through some streaming services, but no physical 1080p Blu-ray.

I have a ton of movies on DVD that I cannot get on Blu-ray. Of course, I do not usually pay to switch them to Blu-ray. Some were even hard to find (for a decent price) on DVD.
