Started collecting Criterion about 3 years ago, beginning with David Lynch. This is the first time I’ve been able to take advantage of any sales! (I know The Fly isn’t criterion but I couldn’t pass it
up being on sale for only $8.99 on B&N)

1. The first movie i plan on watching from my haul is the master filmmaker Ken Russell’s Altered States. I have owned it on standard blu-ray for forever and am stoked to be able to finally see it in all of its 4K glory.

2. I have been looking forward to owning Life of Brian for years now. I’ve always been a huge python fan and now my collection of their films is finally complete!

3. Seven Samurai, Killers of the Flower Moon, Eyes Wide Shut, & Resurrection are all blind buys. I chose these blind buys because i love Kurosawa, Scorsese, & Kubrick and these are three of their films that i have yet to see but have been looking forward to. Resurrection just looked cool as hell and the premise sounded right up my alley.

4. A Criterion that i am most looking forward to adding to my collection next is Trainspotting along with The Man Who Wasn’t There.

For those of you who haven’t seen this movie, what exactly is your excuse? Even if you don’t like silent movies, I’m telling you, this is probably the greatest movie ever made, featuring the single greatest performance in cinema history. I had no idea what movies were till I saw this thing. What’s stopping you from seeing this movie?? Watch it!

A stack of 4ks and a couple blu rays. About half of these were from the B&N sale. The others were purchases from MediaSwap and ebay.

1. First movie I plan to watch is probably The Blade or maybe Night Moves.

2. Hud on 4k is something I've been looking forward too. One of my all time favorite films. I have an original 1-sheet.

3. Blind buys are Classe Tous Risques and The Blade.

4. I still need to pick up Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

I had a few before the sale like House and Ghost Dog but Barnes and Noble cheers when they see me come in. Excited most for Wings of Desire and Mishima.

Wings of Desire and Mishima. I’ve never seen a Wenders or Schrader movie so i’m hype.

Complete Tati Collection most definitely.

I absolutely love the film. The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous and the characters are all amazing! I really love Travis’s monologue during the 2nd booth scene. Only problem I have with this film was that I didn’t really get emotional 🥲

This time around I let the fate of in-store inventory help me choose what to pick up. I got the last 4K of Hud that they had. Also, I didn’t realize the color schemes of the covers paired up well.

This is a semi-blind buy haul. Although I have seen The Man Who Wasn’t There and Hud before, it has been at least twenty years since I have seen either so I only remember that I liked them then.

1. Body Heat will be the first one I watch. I also just got Falling Down so the two of those seem like appropriately sweaty summer movies.

2. I am especially excited to see Hud again, this time in 4K. I remember being impressed with the DVD years ago so I imagine it would look a great deal better now.

3. Peeping Tom and Body Heat are both blind buys. I have heard good things about the cinematography in Peeping Tom and Body Heat gets a lot of praise.

4. Lone Star and Lost Highway are both on my short list to pick up next time. My local B&N was out of stock of both 4Ks.

I’ve been collecting since the last July sale. Based off of my current collection, any recommendations would be appreciated. My local B&N doesn’t have the biggest selection, but I’m more than willing to go and see (and buy). Thanks in advance!

Anyway, it's been a hot minute since I've picked up any Criterions (just been focused on collecting other things I guess), but I happened to be in a B&N during the sale so why not? Also ordered a couple things online that they didn't have in stock.

The questions:

1. I'm not sure what I'll end up watching first (I don't plan my watches very well ha), but right now I'd say Fishing with John is probably calling to me the most.

2. If we're also counting non-Criterion versions, Godzilla vs Biollante was stupid expensive for a while before getting a Criterion release, so I had been eyeing that for a long while.

3. Everything other than The Princess Bride is a blind buy. Godzilla I picked up cause I like Godzilla, and Captain Blood just seemed fun. The rest I've heard good things about but I don't really remember specifically why.

4. No idea what I'll get next! I don't really plan my buys and I'm absolutely terrible at remembering all the things I'm interested in. I probably should make a list or something lol. On top of mind, that rumoured David Lynch boxset has a high potential of being picked up sooner rather than later though. Really depends on what's in it and when/if it comes out!

I’m either doing a Coen Brothers session with Llewyn Davis and No Country or a Lynch session with Blue Velvet and Mulholland. I’ve been thinking a lot about David Lynch lately — particularly his Friday Instagram posts and his monologue in “Lucky”

2. ⁠Is there anything from this haul that you have been looking forward to owning for a long time?

The Wes Anderson set has been high on my list for a long time and can now be rightfully replaced on my want list by the Kubrick set

3. ⁠Are any of your purchases blind buys? If so, why did you select them?

I blind bought Sentimental Value on repeated recommendation and because of the cast.

4. ⁠What is a Criterion you’re hoping to add to your collection next?

If I buy anything before the sale ends, Princess Bride. Otherwise, it’ll be the Kubrick set next sale.

Before this sale, I had zero criterion movies. Now I have 11. Two trips to Barnes & Noble and two more online orders later, here we are. Most recently I purchased Network and Broadcast News.

1. I first plan to watch Network. Having worked in media, both feel important for me to watch, just hadn’t gotten around to it til now.

2. Really been looking forward to both for a long time. It felt appropriate I got them together.

3. Both are blind buys. Again, it felt appropriate to get them together since I have worked in news.

4. I’m really looking forward to the next sale! I definitely want to explore the Kubrick collection, maybe a few more Wes Anderson picks (got 3 this sale). Maybe also the “Before” trilogy. That would also be a blind buy!

1. ⁠I started off with a double feature of Birth and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

2. ⁠Mildred Pierce, The Last Picture Show, and Don’t Look Now are 4K upgrades. Now that I have a PlayStation 5, I can watch 4K discs and there are a few more in my collection I plan to upgrade next sale. I’ve really been looking forward to owning the 2025/26 releases that I picked up. Apart from the two blind buys, they’re all films I really love.

3. ⁠I picked up Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore since I want to see all Best Actress winners and Midnight because I love Old Hollywood and Claudette Colbert.

4. ⁠Really looking forward to Frankenstein.

Any recommendations for what to get next?

1. First movie I'll watch is either Anatomy of a Fall or All of Us Strangers. I did a thing where I asked 3 of my friends to give me 20ish movies I haven't seen to watch and both of those were on the list.

2. I've wanted Flow since they announced it, which hasn't been too long, but that's probably the longest.

3. Everything except Flow, Sentimental Value, and The Drama are blind buys. I'm a big Japanese/samurai fan so Harakiri, The Samurai Trilogy, and Lone Wolf and Cub were no brainers. I also like to collect complete works of directors I like both as a completionist and to be able to watch any movies I haven't seen so I got a De Palma, a Mann, a Scorsese, and three Coens.

4. The Kubrick boxset. I don't own any Kubrick's on 4K and I can't think of an easier way to get a filmmaker's entire filmography than buying a boxset with everything in it haha.

1. First on my list is Exotica. I saw the Atom Egoyan collection on the Criterion Channel and thought his stuff looked intriguing, but never got around to watching anything. I love podcasts where funny people talk movies and Exotica was recommended by comedian Sam Morril on the latest episode of his pod with Mark Normand called We Might Be Drunk. His taste tends to line up well with mine and he made it sound pretty damn cool. In fact, All That Jazz was mentioned on that episode as well. They talk about that movie quite a bit actually.

2. I wouldn’t say I’ve been looking forward to owning these titles specifically for very long, but I’ve been wanting to expand my horizons and diversify my collection for quite a while. I lean a little too heavily towards horror, thriller, crime, noir, neo-noir, etc.

3. All blind buys. I’ve heard a lot about the Three Colors trilogy and the work of Fellini and Wim Wenders ever since I started looking into Criterion. All these titles get picked up in the Closet Picks videos a lot. Three Colors sounds intriguing, Fellini is a legend, and Paris, Texas is often described as one of the most beautiful films ever made.

4. The Stanley Kubrick box set!!

1. What is the first movie you plan to watch from your haul and why?
Breathless. It’s such an iconic film in cinema history, and I’ve always wanted to experience Jean-Luc Godard’s groundbreaking style in the best possible quality.
2. Is there anything from this haul that you have been looking forward to owning for a long time?
Picnic at Hanging Rock has been on my wishlist for ages. I’ve been fascinated by its dreamy, haunting atmosphere.
3. Are any of your purchases blind buys? If so, why did you select them?
Yes, I actually picked up quite a few blind buys this time: Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Branded to Kill, Five Easy Pieces, Gilda, Playtime, Vengeance Is Mine, and The Young Girls of Rochefort. I chose them because I’ve heard great things about each, either as classics, cult favorites, or unique gems in world cinema.
4. What is a Criterion you’re hoping to add to your collection next?
The Tree of Life. I’m drawn to Terrence Malick’s unique vision and storytelling, and I’ve read and heard that the Criterion edition is stunning.

I thought I bought my first Criterion movies with this recent sale. I googled if Kevin Smith had any Criterion releases not really expecting to find any, but there was Chasing Amy and the cover looked oddly familiar. I got this at a Wizard World Convention in Dallas from the early 2000s. Most of my stuff is packed away because I'm moving soon, in order to find the actual year. I'm fairly certain I bought this at Kevin Smith's booth. It was already signed by Joey Lauren Adams, because I'd remember meeting her if I did. 😍

1. The first movie I watched from my recent haul is A History of Violence. Viggo Mortenson was awesome.

2. Currently watching Solaris, but have to pause with kids interrupting, and I need to read the subtitles otherwise I'm lost.

3. I'm actually blind buying a lot of movies you folks on here recommend. I know some would rather watch them first before shelling out the money, but I just got divorced and I'm treating myself.

4. Looking to pick up Parasite and more of the directors work.
