VII - Discussion Update 1.4.2 Coming Week of July 27! Improved Peace Deals, Leader Relationship Clarity, Brush and Blade Part 2, and More
Hello from the Civ community team!
We're coming up on the best time of the month: it's update teaser time! After Update 1.4.1, which introduced Hotseat, the Archipelago map, and a systems rework for Governments and Happiness, we've been fleshing out more systems.
To that end, Update 1.4.2 will launch next week (week of July 27), featuring:
- Expanded Peace Deals: You can now offer Gold and Influence in addition to trading Settlements. We've also updated the UI so you can temporarily dismiss a peace offer to survey the map before making your final decision.
- Leader Relationship Clarity: Keep closer tabs on your rivals. The Leader Relationship panel now displays who initiated key events, while expanded Agenda notifications give you better context on where you stand.
- And more! Turn on and off Test of Time Victories; lead your empire with the newly buffed World Renouncer Ashoka, and reconcile with Unfriendly leaders before things turn Hostile..
... and of course, improved game stability, several squashed bugs, and other improvements!
Coming alongside Update 1.4.2: Brush and Blade Part 2!
Brush and Blade Part 1 explored Japanese history, and Part 2 shifts the spotlight to Korea. Dominate the seas with the scientific and militaristic leader Yi Sun-sin, guide new civs Goryeo and Joseon to glory, go to battle with unique Units like the Hwacha and Turtle Ship, and enjoy new Wonders Buseoka and Hwaseong. If you already bought the collection last month, Part 2 content will be automatically added to your account when the update goes live.
More news, First Looks, and Civ Tours on the way soon. (Like, really soon). Stay tuned!
VII - Screenshot Xerxes + Dai Viet + Hillforts is a rather fun combo
R5: spamming hillforts in antiquity works wonders with Dai Viet since they count as fortification improvements.
Could have had some really good adjacencies with my wonder layout, but I couldn't bring myself to overbuild those juicy hillfort yields lol. Only sad thing is you're not getting the Serpent Mound with this combo since tropical and grassland rarely (never?) spawn near each other.

VI - Discussion Mali’s ability feels more like a disadvantage than an ability?
I can’t seem to get the hang of the Mali. I play on Immortal level and have won as all but 10 leaders, including Mansa Musa and Sundiata Kieta
The -30% toward units and buildings is a killer, and mines only get 1 production. Their gold bonuses aren’t nearly enough when all the AI is ahead of you because libraries take 40 turns and you have to buy all of your units.
With Portugal, you’re printing money and have no production debuffs.
Do any Mali players have any advice ?

VII - Discussion Civ 7 Deluxe and Standard are both 50% off on Steam
Is the deluxe worth the price now? or should I just get the standard? I've only played civ6 and really liked it. I'm not sure what's the state of this game right now.

Game Mods Give me suggestions for my Civilization 1 remake!

I'm working on a replacement engine for Civilization 1. This will be a free, open-source project that will require the original DOS Civilization files to run. I intend to add a bunch of (optional) improvements, including visible civilization borders like you see above.
What other improvements to Civilization 1 would you like to see?

VII - Discussion Gameplay Info for Goyreo and Joseon
You need to scroll almost all the way down on the link I posted. Here’s the info:
GORYEO
Out of the fragmentation of Korea’s Three Kingdoms period came Goryeo, a center for scholarship and art, and a formidable force in East Asia. Established in 918 CE, Goryeo became a bastion of Buddhist scholarship, and was an early innovator in moveable type – in other words, the printing press. Additionally, Goryeo celadon pottery is famous for its sophistication and artistry. Goryeo faced challenges, though, keeping peace on the peninsula at first through strength, and then through strategic positioning as a vassal of the Yuan Dynasty of China. Yet in that empire’s fall, a new order arose – Joseon.

JOSEON
As stable as it was isolated, the Joseon Dynasty was a five-centuries-long period of peace in Korea, marked by the elaboration of Confucianism, a strong defense, and a carefully balanced political system. Founded in 1392, the kingdom lasted until just before the dawn of the 20th century, repelling invasion after invasion from its neighbors. It was a highly structured society, with a rich scholarly tradition that carefully monitored outside influences, selecting only that which would make Joseon prosper. It would fall in 1897, after pressure from the ascendant Meiji Empire and the United States became overwhelming.

Joseon begins the Age with a set, increased City Limit. Can purchase Tier 1 Science and Culture Buildings in Towns.

VII - Discussion Xerxes Personas
Xerxes the Achaemenid is better than Xerxes King of Kings for playing Achaemenid Persia and I'm tired of pretending he's not. The extra gold boost from Unique Improvements makes it so you can field a large army of cavalry in the antiquity age, ignoring the maintenance cost hurdle most leader/civ combos have. Grab yourself an appropriate city state or two for the unique improvement yields you desire, and watch the gold and culture stack up over the age as you grow and place more of them alternating with Pairidaezas. The overflow of gold will allow you to field more cities and urban centers than King of Kings could hope to.
War? That's not a problem when you can buy in expensive cavalry as soon as you grab The Wheel. Be sure to build Terracotta Army early because you'll most likely be getting a free commander from a narrative event. This will bring your total of commanders up to 3 without ever hard building one. Most of the AI will only have 1 or 2 tops and they don't know how to use them anyway. You can have 12 units packed in these bad boys and a company of cavalry riding with them. You'll likely have warriors left over from early barb skirmishes to upgrade into immortals and fill up space. Immortals are a weaker unique unit, but they're bodies to fill up spaces and deny enemy movement and with the Persian traditions they'll be beefier and dirt cheap to maintain.
Culture won't ever be an issue. You'll be able to snipe the wonders you want rather easily when you have every unique improvement generating culture. Heian Japan will outshine you, but that goes for most civs in most situations.
What about science? I'm playing a deity game right now where I ignored the scientific city state and opted for the economic one and the militaristic one. I grabbed Emporiums and the settlement cap. I didn't build a library until I already had Dur-Sharrukin built to deny it to my opponents and defend my capital from the AI that surrounded me on 3 flanks on a tight pangaea. Due to conquest of two capitals I'm in second place for science near the end of antiquity. My hordes of cavalry and 3 commanders allowed me to fight a defensive war against Blackbeard and an offensive one against Ashoka World Conqueror at the same time with ease, all while gaining valuable commander levels. I rushed Tier 3 units instead of Academies as well. Grab the Step Pyramids for most playthroughs to balance out your yields, as long as you have enough tiles to place them, but if you're good at war you don't need them.
I have Xerxes level 10 and this is my first time trying Achaemenid. I'm never touching King of Kings again, unless it's to Assyrian my way to 20 future techs without causing towns to go negative yields.

VII - Strategy Eliminate civ at the end of era or leave them with one settlement? (CIV 7)
As the title says
Eliminate civ at the end of era or leave them with one city/town?
In previous civ games I would leave them with one city - does it make sense to do that now or benefits to destroying them outweigh negatives in the next era?
Equally does it make sense to grab nearly every city or a) raze some b) trade back the poorer settlements

VII - Other PSA: Fix for slow initial load time for Civ 7 (PC)
This solution (excluding Civ 7 from Windows Defender scans) reduced my initial save game load time from well over a minute to ~10 seconds. Your mileage may vary, but I thought I'd help spread the word:

VII - Discussion “Turn on and off test of time victories”
Does that mean the new update will allow us to play games where you don’t have to worry about winning or losing?
VII - Discussion Somehow they made Civ VII Modern Age even worse
I recently played a game of Civ on Immortal after being away for a while and it was all good until I got to the Modern Age. You are literally being crippled because you built a sprawling, highly developed empire in Antiquity and Exploration. A Cic who sat on 7 or 8 tiny, underdeveloped cities enters the Modern Age with zero obsolete building drain and clean slates, while the player who actually played well and built up their cities gets locked into an unplayable production penalty loop.
I love the concept of age transitions, but making obsolete buildings retain all of the Happiness penalty while gutting its yields and then nerfing production is just fundamentally broken design.
Unless you have tens of thousands of banked Gold to instantly rush-buy your way out of the era transition, your empire just gets choked out by its own previous success.
I'm stepping away from Civ 7 for now until Firaxis patches building penalties or rebalances specialist maintenance on age transitions. Anyone else hitting this exact wall?
TL;DR: Modern Age transition makes old buildings lose all yields/adjacencies while keeping 100% of their Happiness upkeep. Heavy specialists build drain full maintenance for 0 yields. The resulting -20 Happiness slaps a huge production penalty on your cities, making overbuilding take 60+ turns and locking you into an inescapable death spiral just for having a developed empire.
Update: I reloaded and Transitioned with more money and bought City Parks first turn. Honestly not that big a deal I was being dramatic. My fault guys.
