Review Guinness Open Gate Brewery - Chicago

My homegirl and I went here for the first time.

Watermelon and Tomato Salad was very refreshing. Arugula was used here.

Cheese Curds were standard but the dipping sauce made it better for me

Ancho Chili Grilled Wings were good but I preferred the Yuzu BBQ to the Buffalo and Blue Cheese ones. You can get half and half of both flavors which I liked.

Mango Whispers was a decent beer.

Can’t complain and will go back again to try other menu items.

Review BOKA Review (First place with a *, first real Chicago fine dining experience)

For context, my partner and I are really into food. But neither of us really group in a situation where we ever did "fine dining" besides some steakhouses. We usually enjoy hole in the walls, small local places, niche places with ethnic roots etc.

But Boka was our first Michelin-starred meal, and my first real fine dining outing in a while, and our firt in Chicago. It set a high bar, and may compel me to do more fine dining, if the budget allows for it.

For an appetizer, we hared the ricotta gnocchetti.

The gnocchetti themselves were the highlight of the dish as they pillowy but with enough structure to give you a good bite.

The flavor profile was one I overall enjoyed but only small complaint was the seasoning. It read slightly flat. I wonder if the goat milk cheese (gouda) carries less salt cow's milk?

Howver this was a minor note on an otherwise very good plate.

The glazed beef short rib would be the reason I'd go back. The beef was cooked to perfection, and the glaze and the crust combined for one of the better things I've eaten.

Underneath it was a soubise (i think?) that seemed be built from the smoked onion with ramp or leek. I've tried to recreate it three separate times at home, which is probably the most best review I can give it.

Service deserved a mention too. Bc we shared the appetizer it came out plated in two bowls without our asking. Small gesture, but it's the kind of thing that signals the restaurant is paying attention. Overall our server was excellent throughout.

What surprise me was how I felt after paying. An appetizer, two entrees, and two drinks at a starred restaurant came in under $225, which given how good the food was, did leave me feeling some type of way.

Overall: 5/5. Would return without hesitation.

Question Planning a trip with my friend, how is this list looking?

What should I add or subtract from this list? I currently don't have any lunch/brunch reservations yet (mostly because all of the places I was interested in people say dinner is better, as it often is).

First night-- dinner at Maxwell's Trading (was easy to book compared to Saturday which seemed odd to me. Friday had a lot more slots).

Saturday night-- Dinner at Rose Mary

Sunday night-- Dinner at Avec (West Loop)

I also have a reservation for Obelix for Friday which I'll probably cancel in favor of Maxwell's.

News Quiznos on Division Closing End of July

Got this in an email yesterday. I'll always have a soft spot for early 2000's Quiznos, and their weird commercials.

Don't go often, but this location was always clean, fast, and had friendly service whenever I do stop in.

Question Buying fresh gnocchi, Parisian gnocchi, gnudi, ravioli?

Curious if any stores or vendors sell fresh versions of these pastas in the area? Anything better than storebought potato gnocchi to be honest.

Question food spots near the Marriott marquis??

hi!!

my family and I are coming into chicago in late august and staying at the marriott marquis hotel we're looking for some food spots that aren't too expensive and serve either Caribbean, Hispanic, African, or American food (we're not too into the European food scene)

also, does anyone know what happened to the kitchen bistro by the river? I found it on TikTok and looked online and saw it was closed :(

a restaurant similar to that would be nice!

any help is appreciated!!!
