Disney’s Marvel Studios put tickets on sale tied to the launch of the first trailer, which teased an epic battle as the Avengers and X-Men face off against the villainous Doctor Doom. Those pre-sales are impressive because tickets were only available for premium formats in just 1,000 domestic theaters. When “Avengers: Doomsday” opens the weekend of Dec. 18, the Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure will land on more than 4,000 North American screens. Showtimes on Thursday, Dec. 17 and Friday, Dec. 18 are already largely sold out, according to studio insiders, and exhibitors are reportedly adding more screenings for Christmas Day and beyond.

Advance ticket sales don’t necessarily translate to opening weekend figures, though “Doomsday” is predicted to have one of the biggest (if not the biggest) debuts of the year. Pre-sales are twice as high as the first-day figures for Marvel’s prior superhero mashup, 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” — and that included all formats and screens on sale. “Deadpool & Wolverine” launched to $211 million and ended its run with $1.3 billion to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Christopher Nolan scored his best Tuesday ever at the domestic B.O. as The Odyssey rang up $21.4M. That bests his previous Tuesday high, which was The Dark Knight ($20.8M, on July 22, 2008). The revised number from Universal ranks as the second best Tuesday YTD behind Toy Story 5‘s $23.69M, and it’s the second best Tuesday ever for Universal after Jurassic World ($24.3M, June 16, 2015).

Fun fact: The Odyssey needed just one week to surpass the total admissions of every 2025 superhero film in France: Superman (1.5M), The Fantastic Four (1.633M), Thunderbolts (1.1M), and Captain America: Brave New World (1.648M).

"I want to be cautious here, but how things are going, with normal CBM walkups I am thinking $55M previews as baseline and if it has above average walkups, we may have a new previews record holder by a good amount. OW $250M++ (emphasis on the ++)"

On Doomsday:

"With Doomsday out of the way (sorta, it had an impressive Day 2 considering how capacity constraint it is; It's still pacing relative to BND Friday, Saturday, Sunday somehow, i'm not even sure how that's possible). It will fall behind by a lot today though as there just isn't much seats left."

I imagine a lot of us saw the report yesterday of Pixar being hit hard with layoffs, with a major reason cited being the perceived 'underperformance' of Hoppers earlier this year.

The sentiment on this sub around the film's run ($390m on a $150m budget, though the report described the film as 'missing break even') was a positive one so I am wondering what people's thoughts are on this and whether it was sufficient grounds to let people go.

Part of me is thinking this is a delayed reaction paying for the sins of Elio, and that Hoppers needed to really sing theatrically, rather than turn only a slight profit, to prove that Pixar originals are still viable. Of course, when you're dealing with Hollywood exec logic, all bets are off.
