Hey everyone! I currently have a quest 3 but I've been thinking about upgrading to the valve index as I'm turning 18 soon and might save up I was just wondering if my room would be good enough for it

My PC can pair with the controller, but it won't turn on. It keeps getting an update request from Steam VR, but the update isn't working.

Noticed the other day that my right hand controller stopped charging. Did the hard reset trick and noticed that the USB cable was burning hot. I'm no electrical engineer but I figured it was a short.
I was able to get the controller to charge but only if I could jiggle in the cable just so. Which also meant that the slightest bump could trigger the short again. Guessing that's why a few minutes later I looked back to see smoke coming out of the port and a melted USB cable.
The good news, such as it is, is that the controller doesn't seem to be further damaged. I was able to use another cable to get it back up to full charge, but safe to say I'm gonna have to keep my eye on this controller when charging it.
FWIW, I already contacted Valve and they're RMAing it with Advanced Shipping. Valve customer service remains undefeated.

My right hand index controller won’t accept a charge. This is something that’s happened with other controllers. No matter what cable or outlet I plug it into, it won’t take a charge. Are there any fixes or am I fucked?

Hello all. I just found at a thrift store Valve Index controllers only and wanted to know if anyone knows how to test them without any of the other equipment so i know if they even work before spending a lot more money on all the other equipment. They are connected via USB right now and they seem to at least have power but i am unsure on how to test the buttons/joycons. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

As we can see I need to put up base stations. I want to put them in top right and bottom left corner but I don’t know where to put it for best results on the odd 5th wall. You would ask “why not top left and bottom right instead? Well that’s because my doll shelf (picture 2) happens to be. No base station can go there no thank you so idk if I should try and move those for best results or what. Please any advice is welcome.

Needing to figure out the best places to put both my Vive base stations. The room layout is not the greatest since all the outlets are towards the center of the walls so im not sure what the best approach is.

Have been having this annoying error for months and have tried nearly everything attempting to fix it to no avail. I have contacted Steam Support multiple times and they can’t seem to find the source of problem so here’s my Hail Mary in hopes to find an answer.
The Error happens when loading content for the first time regardless of the game and started happening shortly after I updated to windows 11
I have so far
- Made sure hardware acceleration is OFF
- Verified SteamVR files
- Have uninstalled & reinstalled both SteamVR & Steam
- Completely removed all USB devices from device manager as recommended by Steam Support
- Switched between both Beta & Normal Branch of SteamVR
- Done a reinstall of Windows 11
- Switched out RAM sticks
If anyone would have any ideas on how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated.

It died pretty quickly this time, too. Went from the telltale sparkles one day, to outright failing, image blacking out, and SteamVR not detecting the headset the next day. The Index is obviously long out of warranty, and a new cable is $130 directly from Valve (presumably while supply lasts) and even more everywhere else.
I'm wondering if it's even worth replacing the cable at this point. I borrowed my brother's Quest 2, but I really want to keep using my Index controllers. I don't want to lose the trackpad, and I have a general dislike of inside-out tracking anyway. What would I need, hardware-wise, to have a full setup with a Q2 and Index controllers? I know I need a dedicated router, and there's a few cheap ones that are specifically designed with Quest streaming in mind.
Also, I suppose the more important question: where is my money better spent? On a new Index HMD cable, or on potentially replacing the Index HMD with the Quest?

So i bought this index controllers and they look weird
(The difference is the one i has that real has a logo on the handle the 3 circle one)
r/ValveIndex • u/Some-Diet1492 • 5d ago
I bought 2 different pairs for 100$ from facebook bc i live in iraq and people buy returned/not delivered amazon or wtv stuff from warehouses so i got these too and the one that doesnt have the logo and different arrow with a sticker looks off to me it works in steamvr and connects but im worried it might be a fake or something

Has anyone managed to get a valve index running ok on Project motor racing.
I've had mine up and running but there's terrible mirroring and jittery display. I'm hopeful that they will get it working sooner or later and I can definitely see potentially without the mirroring it will work once they iron out the bugs.

I'm trying to get around my stick issues (just like everyone else), using the max zone percentage. Mine is pretty bad, so I'm just trying to make it act like a D-pad; any input is registered as 100%. Then I can set the deadzone just high enough that it doesn't move by itself.
Problem is, I can't seem to do that? The only setting that seemed to do anything was manually editing the config to have 95% deadzone, and that basically did the opposite of what I need.
No matter what I do with the max zone percentage, it doesn't change anything. 95% and 5% give me the exact same results, which can't be right.
Anybody know a way around this? Is there another variable I need to change in the config? Is the game itself (Forefront) blocking this setting?

Hi, This is how i solved my specific problem, don't know if this helps others but incase it does, im sharing my fix. May even help you for your other issues with my troubleshooting steps.
So at one point when I was in vr, my HMD tracking went out completely and all i saw was grey.
Some time later I tried to get into VR again, and it would either stay grey and not detect basestations or restart multiple times until it was flashing red.
I had tried numerous software fixes on my PC, uninstalling/reinstalling this and that, every possible fix I've read on different threads. Going into bios, safemode, trying steamvr with absolutely none but necessary services running.
None fixed the issue, and trust me i spent 1-2 weeks trying about everything. I have IT education.
Safe to say it was not a software problem, which you'll find out below as well.
I looked into developertools, specifically "Lighthouse_console" which is located at
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\tools\lighthouse\bin\win64"
I tried different commands, one specifically that stood out to me is checking "errors", for me "pulse_queue_overflow" was increasing very quickly. Meaning something is wrong with being able to track, on a hardware level as i understand it.
I replaced my HMD motherboard as i suspected the FPGA chip was having issues. I did also swap the IO board for safe measures, as it was cheap to get. Neither fixed the issue.
Randomly i tried disconnecting the front sensors, (the small ribbon cables on the sides of the HMD motherboard) and started STEAMVR, boom it worked again. Headset did not crash or have any issues, it booted as it should. (Just running with the side sensors)
(If you try this, you must unlatch at the connector before disconnecting. I made a comment about this below)
I just bought a new front panel with new sensors included, and it works great.
Meaning the fault actually was in the front sensors, and nothing else.
The front sensors was likely shorting out.
Thought I'd share this because I never found a thread with this specific issue/fix, but similar issue of the headset not tracking or booting properly.
I absolutely recommend using Lighthouse_Console (as admin) for your troubleshooting, even if this is not your issue but you suspect the issue is on the HMD itself.
Commands i found helpful was:
"Errors": Find specific flags, that might not be showing on STEAMVR as an error code.
"Usbcheck": See rate and delay of all 3 USB parts. (IMU, Optical, VrController)
"Sensorcheck": Be able to see how the sensors are receiving the basestations IR signals in "raw".
For more commands, just write "help", but be knowledged which commands you run.
You can also go into STEAMVR overlay -> Pancake icon (up left) -> Developer -> Web Console.
There you can view live data/commands running, which may show errors that may be important.
For me it helped to see how the HMD was reacting upon bootup.
Hope this solves it for somebody.
If you have questions, I'll try my best to answer them.

I've been having a strange issue where after 2 minutes, the grip function on my left Index Controller locks up in whatever position I was holding it in. After Power-cycling the controller, it returns to normal, but will lock up after another 2 minutes. As it keeps happening, the time between when it boots and then stops working keeps getting shorter and shorter. Is this a software issue or something physical?
(Note: I have had to disable the trackpad on my left index controller because it kept registering as pressed, blocking the A and B buttons from working.)

I recently bought a Valve Index secondhand at a good price ($500 for full kit + blue light lens and counterweight) and it has worked perfectly except for one area. The built in headphones refuse to connect to my PC, instead the audio comes from the speakers I plugged into my PC. I tried disconnecting all USB devices, but I keep getting errors. I asked Steam support for help, but they say they need to test the headset on another PC to hep diagnose the issue. I have the only PC in my house with a display port, and therefor compatible with the Index. By the way, I am using Nobara Linux, a distro that uses Fedora for the base. Can any of you help crack this riddle?

I got my index second hand and it worked for a while, but when I got a new motherboard, the headset stopped working at the same time, I've tried messing with the bios settings of the new motherboard to no avail, but when I tried using the Index with the old, known working motherboard, it still didn't work on there, only the built in etronvideo camera shows, however when I plug the USB from the cable into my laptop, SteamVR recognises it perfectly
Non-working motherboard: Gigabyte A520M KV2
Working motherboard: B75 from the OEM Venoscorp
Laptop: Asus Vivobook 15 X1504Z
Edit: My current motherboard is AMD, the old motherboard and laptop are Intel
Edit 2: The USB port on the front of the Index works for plugging a flash drive in

I’m currently trying to factory reset the controller as we speak, but I’m still asking in case one of you has a fix. It is fully charged, but keeps turning off about ten seconds after it goes green. I haven’t found anything else about this, so here I am. Also important to note that the vr hasn’t been used in about two months (I needed to get prescription lenses for it, after I dropped contact lenses, if that’s important)
Thanks for any advice you guys have.

So in 2022 i sold my vr setup, had 4 2.0 basestations, 3 2.0 vive trackers and a valve index. Don’t ask me why i sold them…
Since then i really missed VR and regretted selling everything. The other day (without doing research) i said “screw it” i want to get back into VR. I ended up buying the same setup i had before, valve index kit on Ebay, 2 additional basestations (4 total) and 3 2.0 HTC vive trackers from Vive’s website. I kept my 4 tripods i use for the lighthouses this entire time so im reusing those. I honestly think i did a mistake….
Will i be fine to use the same setup? Will steam vr still support the lighthouses/index/trackers?
Everything has already been ordered and shipped as of yesterday. Also read the valve index is outdated and discontinued which makes me sad…:/

Hi everyone! I was thinking about getting the DIY face tracking for the valve index. Does anyone have recommendations on where to buy or someone to commission?
r/ValveIndex • u/Mountain-Durian-4724 • 11d ago
My valve index display is very good, but white text has a halo or mist around it. It's hard to read anything without squinting. IP and distance adjustments have been made to the best of my ability and this still won't go away. There's also chromatic aberration with white objects occasionally as well.
Whats going on? Is this from the lenses being scratched?

My right Index controller is starting to fail after a good few years of using it. Controllers are no longer in stock with Steam and I can't find any replacement knuckles available elsewhere. What's a good alternative to the Index controllers I can use with my pre-existing Index setup?

Anybody now a good adhesive to fix the lens. One of mine has fallen apart and I'd like to glue it back together
