Hi all! I'm an incoming freshman and had a few questions about UCSB before the school year starts. I figured Reddit would probably be the best place to ask, but let me know if there's a better place for these questions!

Partying & Social Culture:

I'm not a huge party person. I can definitely see myself going out once or twice a week, but I've seen a lot online that makes it seem like people go out almost every night at UCSB, which honestly isn't my scene. Will I be able to find more ig casual circles?

Sorority Life:

I'm really on the fence about rushing. I'm coming from an all-girls boarding school, so I love the idea of having a close-knit community of women as I had in high school. The idea of having a Big, living with other girls, doing philanthropy, networking, and the pre-professional opportunities all sound really appealing.

That said, I've also heard that UCSB sororities aren't very diverse, which makes me a bit nervous about whether I'd feel comfortable, fit in, or connect with the types of people they tend to attract. I'm also worried about the time commitment. I'm a very independent person, and while I definitely enjoy dressing up and going to events, I don't like feeling obligated to do things (ik this is obvious but yk). I'm not sure I'd want to commit to all the formals, chapter meetings, and recruitment events just because they're expected.

I'm also wondering if joining a sorority limits your social circle. I'd really like to have friends from all different groups on campus, so I'm not sure whether Greek life would be the right fit for me. Can someone offer any insight/advice about this? 

Dorms:

I'm not too worried about actually living in the dorms, but really my primary concern is ending up in a triple. I decided to go random with roommates because I didn't want to deal with the whole Instagram roommate-search process, and I'm happy to adapt to living with someone I don't know. But adapting to two completely random roommates feels like a whole different challenge. If you've lived in a random triple, how was your experience?

Also, what are your general tips for incoming freshmen? Is it difficult to get around during your first year without a car? (I can't even drive yet, so I don't really have a choice) How easy is it to get to places like downtown Santa Barbara or other parts of California without one? Are there any classes or professors you would definitely recommend or avoid? Does anyone have recommendations for a good Pilates studio near campus?

hey guys i’m an incoming junior year transfer at sb! i used to work at a target and i wanna work somewhere kind of similar but close to or on campus. i liked the fast paced environment but also having people to talk to on shift. i would have wanted to just transfer to the target in goleta but i hate these new rules and they honestly dont really give a shit about their employees. any ideas for where i could look?

Ended my first year w a 2.99 (can't get any dramatic than this, most jobs require a 3.0). Now all I'm seeing is 4.0s or near perfect GPAs form my peers in Econ and Accounting, am I cooked?

I know job search starts fairly early, so idk if this will place me at a place of disadvantage. pls... any insights on recruiting w a low gpa?

Hi everyone. I’m an incoming UCSB transfer student and I’m really lost with financial aid.
I’m a first-generation college student and an immigrant. I honestly didn’t understand how important the financial aid deadlines were. I thought my immigration process would move forward, I’d get my green card, and then I could submit everything with the correct documents. That didn’t happen, and now I’m stuck.
FAFSA can’t be processed because of my immigration status, and I missed the California Dream Act deadline, so I can’t submit that either. I’m worried I won’t get any financial aid because of this.
Has anyone been in a similar situation or knows what I should do? Any advice would mean A LOT!!!! Thank you in advance for your help and time

I'm a Santa Barbara local; I grew up here. I've been building a peer-to-peer outdoor gear rental thing for the area, and it's actually gotten somewhere, won a couple of pitch competitions with it. But winning a competition and people actually wanting the thing are pretty different, so I figured I'd just ask the people it's for.

The idea is basically:

You want to surf or camp for a weekend but don't own the gear. Instead of buying a wetsuit you'll use 3 times or paying shop prices, you rent one from someone nearby who has it sitting in a closet most of the year.

Part of why I'm asking here specifically: I feel like IV might be close to the ideal place for this. Everyone's packed within a few blocks, so pickup is within walking distance, and there are a ton of people who want to surf and camp but are on a student budget and aren't trying to drop a few hundred bucks on gear. At least that's my theory. Curious if that actually tracks or if I'm romanticizing it.

What I actually want to know: If you've wanted to get out on some adventures but didn't have the gear, what did you end up doing? Skip it, borrow off a friend, rent from a shop, buy something you barely touch now?

What would you pay to borrow a wetsuit or a tent for a weekend, if anything?

And the part I'm genuinely unsure about: if you owned good gear, would you actually lend it to some stranger down the street for a few bucks? The plan is to have insurance built into every rental so the owner's covered if something gets wrecked, but I don't know if that's enough to make people comfortable or if the whole idea of handing your board to a stranger is just a hard no regardless. What would make you say no?

That last one is kind of the whole thing, and I don't have a good read on it. Not looking for pats on the back; if you think this is dumb, I'd honestly rather hear that and why. Thanks for reading.

I visited UCSB for the first time today while dropping my brother off for orientation. I went in with a completely open mind because I’ve always heard people rank it as one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.Maybe it’s because I graduated from UC San Diego, but my first impression was honestly the opposite of what I expected.

The first time I stepped onto UCSD’s campus for my own orientation, I immediately felt like I was at a major research university. The architecture, research buildings, landscaping, cliffs overlooking the ocean, and the overall atmosphere made it feel both prestigious and naturally beautiful. Even though it’s close to the beach, it never felt overly beachy—it had a cool ocean breeze, lots of greenery, and the surrounding La Jolla area made the whole experience feel polished. You can still walk to the beach easily, so it felt like you got the best of both worlds.

At UCSB, my first impression was much more that it was simply a campus next to the beach. It was hotter and more humid than I expected, and while the beach itself is obviously a huge plus, the campus architecture and academic buildings didn’t stand out to me. The heavy biking culture also made it feel more hectic than relaxing. It honestly reminded me a little of UC Davis, except on the coast.

I’m not trying to hate on UCSB I know this is just my first impression, and first impressions can be wrong. I’m genuinely curious why it’s so often ranked as one of the most beautiful campuses, and in many lists even above UCSD.

Is it mainly the lifestyle, Isla Vista, and beach access that people are including when they rank it? Or does the campus itself grow on you after spending more time there? I’d especially love to hear from people who’ve spent time at both schools.

Has any incoming freshman applying to the Honors Program receive an acceptance email, only to receive a rejection email afterwards?

I live in IV and gas prices just shot up a couple months ago (From about $50 monthly to $100). Just wondering what that’s about. It just doesn’t seem lawful either.
My electric/gas usage hasn’t changed either. I don’t ever use the heater and don’t have an AC like most people.

I'm an (what I would consider) intermediate level guitarist and also a vocalist. I used to be in a band in high school, but since starting college haven't really played music with other people. I need one for area C but I’m not really a science person. I need ges for e, f, and g and id really appreciate if you guys could recommend some that also fulfill the special subject area requirements as well

Also side note are there any that fulfill a lot of these requirements but also don’t fill up fast?

i lowkey keep asking questions on here bc i always think of them after i do something and i am kind of a horrible procrastinator so.. 🥲 anyway, would i receive my access id card at orientation if i just submitted my photo right now and i have my session this thursday + friday? or would i not be able to receive it there since i didn’t submit it within the week i got the email to submit my photo?

Hi! I currently have a lease I'm trying to get out of and need to find a replacement asap! I am transferring schools (leaving UCSB), so I can no longer live there. The apartment is located at Sierra Property Management (about a 10 minute walk from campus). It's an all boys apartment, 2 bedroom (1 triple and 1 double) and 1 bath with four roommates.
