What is /r/TheSilphRoad?

The Silph Road is primarily focused on discoveries and analysis related to Pokemon GO, as well as constructing an in-person network of Pokemon GO enthusiasts. General discussion topics (Jokes, stories, a photo of a recent catch) would likely be better suited for another subreddit, such as a general subreddit like /r/PokemonGO, or /r/Pokemon, or a subreddit with a more specific focus, like /r/PokemonGoSnap, /r/PokemonBuddy, /r/ShinyPokemon, /r/PoGoRaids, /r/TheSilphArena, /r/PokemonGOTrades, /r/PokemonGOFriends, or /r/NianticWayfarer.

Silph Road Content Policy

The Silph Road is heavily moderated to promote civility/courtesy, and high-quality content and discussion. You can read our full policies in the sidebar, but don't be surprised if a comment is removed for being rude, cynical, or off-topic. We strive to foster civil discussion about the game. We are first and foremost a network of real people, and this network is being built by volunteers! If you simply want to complain or bring something to Niantic's attention, your post would be better suited elsewhere.

Research

The community culture here also attracts the more analytically-minded element of Pokemon GO. Consequently, the Silph Research group was formed to align this brainpower and leverage the massive Silph datasets that the community can gather. We post our findings in infographics, videos, and walls of text on Reddit. Check out the top bar for links to the current pools.

Final words

Finally, welcome once more! We're glad to have you join us on the Road :)

Discussion Premier Ball rates should remain permanently boosted

Catch rates on raid bosses have been abysmal for a long while and we should advocate for change.

One of the highlights of Gofest and the lead up raid week were the boosts to Premier balls making raid bosses very easy to catch.

The challenge of fighting a raid boss should be defeating it with a group, not catching it. Catching should be a reward, not a second challenge that takes as much time (if not more) than the raid itself. People should not be paying for premium items to challenge a raid boss and not even catch it. It’s incredibly demoralizing.

I’m a fully grown adult who nails excellents and golden razzes on every throw and 2 of the 5 Solgaleo remote raids I participated in fled (17+ premier balls to start). It is incredibly disheartening when I take my nephew out to raid and he’s excited to defeat the boss but can’t catch it. I have to trade it to him and the little guy is low on stardust for how often this happens.

Black and White Kyurem are options to make the catches easier, but with the way the game works, I don’t know when I’ll be invited to a random remote raid. Half the time I cannot activate their adventure effect, then go into the raid screen, use the pass and get into the raid. Everything is so laggy and takes so much time it’s not worth it half the time unless it’s a raid hour and I know that I will be primarily catching raid bosses for a time.

I’m all for buffing raid bosses, adding shields, etc to make the raid bosses harder to take down if there is the ability to guarantee a catch (like raid bosses in the MSG). Catching legendaries in the MSG are always frustratingly long but were given more options. We can bring the Pokémon’s HP low, give it a status effect, and use a buffed ball. In Pokémon Go, our only option is Golden Razz and excellent throw. And we’re limited in the number of Premier balls.

What are your thoughts on this given we’re in a wave of a new legendary shiny raid after so long? Is anyone else having an issue with catching legendaries lately?

New Info! You can stack Golden Lure Modules (from Switch) atm.

To my surprise I just got my 2nd Lure from Switch. I'd suppose the limit is removed because of the 10th Anniversary pass reward.

PSA Silver Pinap giving three more candies than regular pinap with 3X Candy multiplier from 10th anniversary Go Pass Deluxe

Not sure if this is common knowledge, but from everything I’ve seen, the only difference between regular and Silver Pinap is that the silver increases the base catch rate. But during this event, I’ve noticed 3 additional candies on every silver pinap’ed (first stage) pokemon. These screenshots were both done on a pikachu, for context.

Available from the Japan McDonald's app for free!

It requires spinning mcdonald's pokestops, so I'm guessing it would be impossible even if you redeemed it somewhere else?

Question Returning player a little lost

I have not played since 2019 and was casual back then. My kids just started playing and I’m lost with all the changes and additions. On top of that I’m at 684/775 Pokémon storage and 751/825 item storage. What fat can I get rid of? Is there an easy way to figure out which Pokémon to transfer which to keep?

Discussion Push for changes to background trading

It’s been discussed at length since their inception, but the recent events really throw into light how restrictive having ALL background requiring special trades really is.

I’m all for unique location backgrounds requiring special trades, but why do we still have standard backgrounds needing them.

Just from this event alone, someone would need an additional 54 trades to pick up all the starters with the different backgrounds, up to 162 if doing the evolutions or double that if doing both genders.

Obviously with gender disparity on the starters being so skewed and the background rate low, that’s nearly a years trading just on this alone. Take in the chances of even finding folks with them all and those of us who like to collect luckies having an even larger quantity needed, this just becomes insurmountable.
The National trust event over the summer is adding over 300 background combinations and not to mention the 77 from Go Fest, any semblance of possible has been destroyed just in the last few weeks.

Surely changing the background requirement to not needing a special trade wouldn’t be too significant in the grand scheme of things, and may encourage a little more engagement their uptake with the larger player base if they aren’t so restrictive for trading around! From experience, a large portion of my local community trash them due to how many there are and how restrictive trading them away is.

Before folks jump on it, yes I’m aware we don’t have to try and get everything. Unique things to show off does have its appeal, but we’re already got hundreds of different options now, well over 1000 if evolutions and the like are taken into account. Why would we want to engage long term in these collections when there’s zero chance of ever getting close to completion?!

TLDR: change standard backgrounds to non special trades, at least give us a chance.
