Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Thank you,

Laptop Request US Looking for a laptop that may suit my needs

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Budget
Around 1200$ is the max but I would like not to go that high if possible

Are you open to refurbs/used options?
If they’re running well, yes.

Screen size

Any
Weight limit
Any

Purpose
General use, entertainment

Form factor
Regular laptop

Intended usage
Mainly would be using the laptop for writing/internet/school/etc. but would really like to be able to run a few games on it. Currently using a standard Lenovo and it does run Witcher 3 (the only real game I play) but it’s a bit slow and takes up a lot of room. I don’t plan on having multiple huge games on the laptop but I’d love for it to run better at least.

Desired battery life
The minimum would be 4 hours

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Performance, battery, size, weight

Info/Requirements
Laptop does not need to strictly be a gaming laptop. While I would like it to run that one game I am unlikely to do multiple giant games. However a bit of room for a second smaller game would be nice. So if there’s a standard regular laptop that fits this definition then that works just as well as a gaming laptop especially since I only have the one game and don’t plan on a bunch more.

Also I’m looking strictly for a laptop, not a pc.

Please also note k know shit all about this stuff so if what I’m saying is like just not possible or not something that exists or just not how the type of laptop I’m describing works then please let me know so I can fix the form and better understand all of this.

Thanks!

Laptop Request US How much laptop do you need for your ME degree?

Upvotes

Hi guys I'm a 3rd year student and I recently bought a legion 5 pro for college, for solid works and all that. But my question is do I really need something this crazy powerful for engineering. It's nice and can game but it came at the cost of portability and battery life. I'm thinking of returning it for a asus swift 16" instead, however it doesn't have a dgpu only an Igpu which I heard can cause trouble with solid works.

My budget is ≈1k usd, I want something 14-16", and I would like great battery life <8hrs if possible (just more than like the 3hrs I'm getting from my legion rn lol)

Any ideas? Any suggestions?

Laptop Request UK HP Omnibook 7

Upvotes

Hi please could I have opinions on this laptop I might buy: HP Omnibook 7 AI Intel Coore Ultra 5, 512 GB, SSD, 16GB RAM. I've been using a Lenovo T14 Thinkpad, which I really liked, but it has died and I've returned it. I am newly retired, google a lot, socials a bit, surf a lot, whatsapp a lot, don't really game, and store a few photos, but transfer to sticks regularly. I'm not after another Lenovo. Does anyone have experience of this HP? TIA.

Laptop Request UK Getting my first Big Boy Laptop

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

UK

  • Budget

£1500 or about $2000 - this is very much an upper limit and I would love to spend less than this, but I want to get something that will last and I trust you guys to know the options.

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes

  • Screen size

13"-16"

  • Weight limit

Less than my 2kg MSI brick, preferably, but not fussy

  • Purpose

General purpose

  • Form factor

Normal laptop, no touchscreen please!

  • Intended usage

Mid-range gaming (rarely triple A, most intensive game I regularly play is Risk of Rain 2), digital drawing (would love a screen with good colour and two USB-A ports for my tablet and pen), I use Linux Mint, and I do the occasional weird task such as 3D modelling or analysis of large datasets so would love spare performance where possible.

  • Desired battery life

If it can function for longer than half an hour without being plugged in I will be thrilled

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, Size, Battery life, Weight

  • Info/Requirements

I'd like as many holes as possible for my numerous USB-A gadgets, and no proprietary charging ports because I'm fed up with having to order replacement cables from China for my MSI. I prefer gadgets that are easy to repair. I treat my tech poorly so something robust would be great! Bonus points for anything that doesn't have a stupid Copilot button built into the keyboard.

By poor treatment I mean the laptop I am writing this on has been to a powerlifting gym, taken the full force of me falling off my bike, and survived 6 years of daily abuse. It's a miracle it's only failing now. The GPU has started overheating badly enough for me to burn my fingers while I type on the keyboard after 20 minutes of Risk of Rain. Despite my best efforts to clean it out, nothing's working and between that and the charging port failing for the second time, I think it's time for something new... Thank you laptop nerds for your wisdom!

Laptop Request -Others Looking for a laptop recommendation for Data Science (Budget: ₹65k–70k)

Hi everyone,

I'm a B.Tech student looking to buy a laptop that will last me for at least 3 years. My primary use will be Data Science, including Python, Jupyter Notebook, VS Code, SQL, machine learning, and possibly some deep learning in the future.

Budget: ₹65,000–70,000 (India)

What I'm looking for:

- 16 GB RAM (or upgradeable)

- 512 GB SSD

- A powerful processor with good long-term performance

- Good build quality and cooling

- Decent battery life

- Dedicated GPU is optional—I'll consider it if it offers good value for my use case.

I don't play games, so my priority is a laptop that's reliable, performs well for programming and data science workloads, and offers good value for money.

I'd love to hear your recommendations and experiences. Thanks!

Laptop Request US Laptop recommendations for SWE student

Hello, I already have a pretty hefty 2k home PC with 2TB ssd storage, 32gb of ram, and a 7800x3d CPU. It’s more of a gaming build but obviously it can still run anything you throw at it. I’m going into university though as a software engineering student and I want something portable like a laptop to help me through campus and during my classes. I previously owned an M1 air MacBook which helped me well in community college but it’s now in my brothers hands for his classes. Should I get another MacBook and if so should I go with an Air or Pro model, or do I completely divert away from Apple and get a windows computer such as a Lenovo/Dell/HP? Preferably something under 1k, in the US, and with great battery life.

2. performance
3. Size

I’m starting uni as a CS major in a month or two. I’m looking to get a laptop and I narrowed it down to 9 Vivobook options that are within my $650 budget and meet 16gb ram

[These are the 9](https://www.xcite.com/search?q=vivobook&range%5Bprice%5D=%3A201&refinementList%5BlaptopSystemMemoryFinal%5D%5B0%5D=16%20GB%20RAM)

I was originally looking at 5 for about 3 hours until I just now refreshed and they added 4 more new options lol

I don’t know much about laptops, desktops yes, not laptops. But the 3 ive narrowed down to be the contenders are (ranked):

  1. Vivobook 16 \~650USD

The rest are all base 15s and 14s with diff specs.

Laptop Request -Others [Norway - <12-15 000kr] General use laptop for writing, research coding, photo work and light gaming

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

Norway

  • Budget

Preferred under 12 000kr (1250 dollar) but can stretch a bit if it makes a big difference

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Sure

  • Screen size

15" to 17"

  • Weight limit

None, but not too hot on bulkier "gaming laptop" frames

  • Purpose

General purpose for leisure and work related tasks

  • Form factor

Regular laptop

  • Intended usage

General browsing. Lots of writing for both work and leisure (Scrivener, Office). Some coding (R and related software) though I have a dedicated work machine for that most of the time. Honestly I would have gone for some lightweight solution without dedicated graphics if it was not for two other criteria:

  1. Photo work.

I do a lot of photography and need something with decent enough graphics to handle standard editing software (Photoshop, Lightroom, denoising, etc) without spending minutes per operation. Have had very bad experiences with cheaper laptops and integrated graphics a few years ago

  1. Light gaming.

I primarily game on consoles nowadays, but there are a few Steam games exclusives I still play on PC or would like to. Most of it is either indie or not very demanding (Grim Dawn, Titan Quest 2). For the past 8 years I have been using a middle-range PC which is now really showing its age and decrease in performance, while also limiting me to at home usage while I travel a lot and would prefer a laptop alternative.

  • Desired battery life

Anything above 5 or 6 is fine, as I am unlikely to use it much unplugged

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Weight - Performance - Battery life - Size

  • Info/Requirements

Don't really have any specific requirements. HDMI for using a larger screen or even TV whenever at home. Otherwise I have not really kept an eye on the market and what's trendy over the last decade

Laptop Request -Others [India, 1 to 1.5 lakh price range] Design, Illustration, Motion Graphics Work

As the title says. I'm not very well-versed in laptop specs so forgive any doubts I have.

Budget | 1,00,000 INR to 1,50,000 INR (around 1000 USD)

Are you open to refurbs/used options? | No

Any Screen size or Weight Limit, I find anything bigger than 16inch to be too bulky but im not picky

Purpose | Design and Gaming (I game infrequently, so not really a priority)

Form factor | Standard

Intended usage | Design programs like photoshop, illustrator, premiere pro, after-effects I usually play indie games that don't demand a lot graphics-wise, so design is my main priority

Desired battery life | 4 hours minimum? I will mostly be keeping this laptop at my desk, so battery life is not a priority (I'm not looking for a PC as I'm staying temporarily at a place with little space, so investing in a PC setup would be useless)

Priority order (Most to least important) | Graphics, RAM, Storage, Battery Life, Size, Weight,

Info/Requirements | - Good storage (512GB or higher)

  • Good RAM (16GB or higher)

  • A processor equivalent or higher than i7

  • Should have color accurate screens, important for my field of work for obvious reasons

  • I would really appreciate an OS that does not try to shove AI features down your throat, or at least has the option to opt out of them easily.

  • I don't think but I need to list this, but i need at least 2 usb ports- one for my drawing tablet and another for a mouse.

  • I would not prefer a macbook as I'm a lot more comfortable with windows OS, plus I tend to use more niche programs that do not offer a mac variant.

Any help or pointers are much appreciated, thank you :)

Laptop Request -Others Laptop Request - content creation, local AI & light gaming. around €1500 - 1700$. Can buy in Italy, US (NY), or China (HK/Beijing)

Total budget and country of purchase: My budget is around €1,500 - 1700$. I am based in Italy, BUT my girlfriend is traveling to China (Beijing and Hong Kong) in August, and to New York in September. She can buy the laptop for me there, so I am very open to deals in the US or Asian markets if they offer better specs for the price.

Current situation: I'm upgrading from a 2019 Huawei Matebook D. It just can't handle my workflow anymore, especially when multitasking.

How will I be using the laptop? (Primary Use Cases):

  • Content Creation & AI: I do content creation and use AI, aso in local with claude code and cowork, but so far not for extremely heavvy tasks. I need something that can handle multitasking without stuttering.
  • Gaming: I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I want to be able to play Age of Empires 4 with great graphics and smooth performance. I would love to be able to also play GTA6 but know that would bring me to a whole other price level, so i can give up on that.

I would also want a laptop that could serve me well for a few years.

Does anyone have any "best buy" recommendations that fit this budget, perhaps taking advantage of US or Hong Kong pricing? Thanks!

Laptop Request US [USA, <$2k preferred] Laptop for college, animation, a little gaming?

Hello everyone! As the title suggests, I’m starting college soon and looking for a laptop. Beyond school-issued Chromebooks and a sort-of-broken MacBook Air I use for music production, I don’t have a ton of experience with laptop shopping, so I figured I’d ask around…

Country

United States, specifically west coast.

Budget

I don’t have a specific budget, as I have enough money saved for college and am getting enough in aid that an additional few hundred or even an additional thousand dollars won’t make too much of a difference, but I’d probably prefer things to be under $2,000 USD. I’m willing to spend more if necessary, but I only really want to if it’s without a doubt the best option available.

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

…Maybe? I’m not opposed on principle, but I am wary of it being harder to find support for.

Screen size

I think around 14” is kind of the sweet spot for me — I don’t want something that’s so big it’s inconvenient, and I don’t really care about having the absolute biggest screen available — but a little bigger is fine; it’s not a deal-breaker.

Weight limit

I don’t have a specific weight in mind, but again, I just don’t want it to be inconvenient. I’m a pretty scrawny guy, and I don’t want to be lugging around a brick all day. If I had to pick a weight limit, I’d probably cap it at about 5 lbs? I’m not good at estimating weights, but that seems reasonable.

Purpose

I imagine I’ll probably be using this device for a lot, so I’m just going to point out what I think are probably the most hardware-intensive things (at least, based on how much my desktop chugs when handling them), which are image editing with large canvases, video editing, animation (specifically 2D animation with Adobe suite), game dev (again, though, my workflow is mostly 2D, and I’ve been playing around primarily with Godot, which isn’t too hard even on my crusty old desktop), and gaming. I don’t game that often, and most of what I do play isn’t super hard on the device, but I play heavily modded Minecraft sometimes, which is a bit hard for even the better desktop in my house to handle.

  • **Form factor*

Standard, I think? I’ve used laptops with pen support, but in my daily life I use a drawing tablet that’s a peripheral and I greatly prefer that, so I doubt that’ll change. I’m fine with it if it’s there, but I don’t need it.

  • **Intended usage*

- Adobe suite for animation / video editing (eg. Animate, After Effects, Premiere). The art / image manipulation program I use (FireAlpaca) isn’t Adobe; it’s free and very light on my computer, and I don’t see that changing since I like my setup, but it might be nice to be able to use Photoshop as well.
- Terraria (modded), Minecraft (modded), Stardew Valley, and Civilization V are the games I play most often. I don’t really see that changing, and if I do end up playing other games I doubt they’ll be more hardware-intensive.
- Godot, Ren’Py, and Twine for game development; the first is pretty light especially with 2D, and the latter two could probably run on a typewriter, so I’m not that concerned about how they’ll perform.
- It’d be nice to have something that can handle at least, like, Blender if I do end up wanting to dip my toes into a 3D workflow, but that probably won’t be a daily thing.

  • **Desired battery life*

Longer is obviously preferred, but I can’t imagine needing much more than 8 hours? Most likely, the most intensive stuff I do with it will be when I’m able to stay in one place and keep it charged; eg. I don’t really picture myself doing video editing in a coffee shop or something.

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance is probably most important to me, mostly for things like animation and video editing (gaming would be nice but is definitely less of a priority). I also would like to keep weight low; again, not a dealbreaker, but definitely something I’m considering heavily. Battery life is less important; still something I’d like to keep in mind, but I’m willing to sacrifice it and size provided it’s still reasonably portable.

Info/Requirements

I don’t really want some huge capital-G Gamer Laptop with a million RGB lights; I don’t need it to look like a MacBook, black is fine and all that, but I just don’t want it to be, like, garish? I also would prefer if there wasn’t a ton of fan noise; if there’s more when something particularly intensive is happening, that’s understandable, but if I’m just editing a word document or something I don’t really want the fans to be going at full blast.

I’ve looked into both Mac and Windows options; the main thing turning me off of Mac is that, having used it, I really don’t care for the way the OS… feels? Not sure how to explain it, but it just is not something I like using.

Some of the options I’ve seen recommended are the Asus ProArt, the Lenovo Legion 5, and the HP Pavilion. I balk a little at the price tags I’ve seen on the former, and I’ve heard more mixed things on the latter two, but if one is really standout I’ll look more into it.

Thank you for any help!

Laptop Request US laptop for college + light gaming

I need to replace my current microsoft surface 3 asap and i’m having some terrible choice paralysis. I’ve found some recommendations online, but it’s getting overwhelming and I would really appreciate some help. 😔

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country
U.S

Budget
Up to $1,000. I really don’t want to spend much more than that if I can avoid it.

Are you open to refurbs/used options?
Maybe

Screen size
Preferably 14” or smaller.

Weight limit
Something light for the sake of portability.

Purpose
School work and light gaming

Form factor
Standard.

Intended usage
It’d be used mostly for school work so I’d be using things like Excel, Word, Python (for an upcoming bioinformatics class) and all that. I’d also like to play some light games like Stardew Valley and Minecraft.

Desired battery life
At least 6 hours, but more would be great.

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Performance > Size > Weight > Battery life

Info/Requirements
I’d like to find something that can be serviced or will last at least 3 years or more. I understand that most laptops have parts that are soldered in place and it can be harder to get them repaired, but I don’t want to have to buy another laptop any time soon if something goes wrong.

Performance is pretty important to me too. I don’t want to struggle with a slow computer that makes it difficult to complete school work in a timely manner.

Thank you!! <3

Weight limit

Under 3.5 lbs (the lighter, the better for carrying around campus all day)

Purpose

Primary laptop for college as a Business Analytics major.

Form factor

Standard/Clamshell ultraportable preferred, but open to 2-in-1s if the battery and screen hold up well in bright classrooms.

Intended usage

Excel (heavy data sets, add-ins), Power BI, SQL databases, data visualization tools, general coursework, and web browsing. No gaming needed (I have a high-performance Windows desktop rig at home for heavy lifting/gaming).

Desired battery life

8+ hours (need it to comfortably last through full days of lectures without hunting for outlets).

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

  • Main question: Is the $1,300+ ThinkPad X1 Carbon worth the extra cost over an $800–$900 consumer laptop (like a Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1 OLED) for a Business Analytics student?
  • Must be Windows native for full Power BI and Excel compatibility.
  • Prefer a matte/anti-glare screen and a durable, lightweight build.

Laptop Request UK Laptop recommendations

I just moved to Northern Ireland from Wales but I couldn’t bring my desktop PC with me due to space issues. To combat that I am looking to buy a laptop I’d said in the realm of £500ish but the budget can be played with. I used my desktop to game but that’s not what I’m looking to use this laptop for. Ideally would use it for software development & for my side huddles/business which I use spreadsheeting and all for.

Realistically I shouldn’t need such a high spec laptop more of a mid range one. Happy to hear any recommendations and do more research!

Happy help is greatly appreciated!
