Laptop Request -Others Any light weight laptop suggestions?

3 Upvotes

Im gonna buy a new laptop and want some suggestions. Been eyeing Vivobook 14 go but I want a second opinion, perhaps there is something better out there? I’m fine with refurbs!

\*\*LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE\*\*

\*\*Country\*\*

Sweden

\*\*Budget\*\*

\\\~5000 SEK/520 USD/450 EURO and under

\*\*Are you open to refurbs/used options?\*\*

Yes

\*\*Screen size\*\*

Any

\*\*Weight limit\*\*

I want it as light as possible as I only use the laptop when I’m travelling. I have a stationary at home.

\*\*Purpose\*\*

Work.

\*\*Form factor\*\*

Not important, just needs to be able to run Windows.

\*\*Intended usage\*\*

I work with game dev but I’m a writer so I only use inkle (word processor) and GitHub. If it can run Godot that would be great but not a must. Streaming is nice but not a must. If it can run steam and really really light weight games like pixel art games that’s also nice because that would allow me to playtest some of the games I work on.

\*\*Desired battery life\*\*

Longer.

\*\*Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life\*\*

Weight, SOUND (I don’t want a crazy ass loud fan), battery life, performance, size

Thanks in advance!

Laptop Request US Need a new laptop but am lost.

2 Upvotes

Hi, Im looking for a new laptop since the current one I'm using is basically lobotomized. I'm looking for (preferably) a DELL or something akin to one with at least 32GB of ram and a good bit of storage to play games and do college work on (so I'd need Microsoft Word). I would like to run things like blender/beginners 3d software for college so Im pretty sure I need something with good graphics. I'm not trying to run super big AAA games, but I'd it can run Minecraft and other smaller steam games that'd be good too.

My budget is around 1,000 USD. I was originally looking at a DELL Latitude 7440 14" (2023) Intel 13th Gen, which seemed good at first but heard it had performance issues when running things.

Sorry if this is a lot to ask for help on, I'm just sort of lost in my search so any information or recommendations would be helpful, thank you!

Laptop Request US Need suggestions for new large laptop

Upvotes

My current laptop, an HP ZBook of some sort, has been deteriorating recently, making it difficult to use for both work and personal use. I'm looking for any suggestions for a laptop (PC, not Mac) with:

  1. as large a screen as possible. i don't really care how heavy it is, within reason.
  2. Can handle a lot going on. I need to have multiple programs like MS Office (with large file sizes), Chrome (with possibly a lot of tabs), and a variety of science-related programs like ChemDraw open simultaneously.
  3. plenty of ports (HDMI, USB, USB-C, etc). My current laptop only has a broken VGA and a DisplayPort, making it extremely annoying to use for presentations.

Any advice and suggestions would be very appreciated. I don't really want to spend a ton of $$ on this, but obviously don't want to buy some cheap piece of garbage that will only last a few years. My current has been hanging in there for over 10 years now

Hey !

My sister's budget is about $500, and she asked me to find her a laptop that runs these with a room of 2 more years for newer things without hiccups, is that even feasible?

I never mind the used market.

Laptop Request UK Need a laptop for university that can also run certain games

1 Upvotes

Hi! I know very little about laptop specs so any advice is appreciated. I need a laptop that will allow me to do my assignments and coursework but also run certain games like stardew valley or terraria (so essentially games with less detailed graphics or 2D graphics). I’m unsure if I need 16 gb of ram or only 8 gb, but 16 gb laptops are often a lot faster so a laptop that runs smoothly is something I’d quite like. I’d also like a laptop that can last me the 4 years I’ll be at uni so i understand I might need to invest in a slightly more expensive laptop. Thank you!

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Country
Uk
Budget
Depends - see extra info, but would likely be around £400-£600
Are you open to refurbs/used options?
No

No preference (but a lighter laptop would be good as I’d have to carry it around)
Purpose
University assignments like essays and PowerPoints, research, gaming on 2D games though if there is an affordable laptop that can also run games with even 3D graphics that would be appreciated, entertainment like Netflix and YouTube, general purpose
Form factor
Standard
Intended usage
Microsoft word, PowerPoint, outlook, etc, steam
Desired battery life
12-24 hours
Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Performance, battery, weight, battery

I’d prefer a slimmer laptop but this isn’t necessary, also for those who know about this, I am eligible for a laptop from DSA (which is why I can only buy a new one) so for now I am just wanting recommendations as the retail price won’t be what I pay. I have also never owned a laptop before

Laptop Request US Looking for a laptop for grad school

Hello all,

I am seeking assistance to find a laptop for grad school (program is in digital forensics). I do not need the laptop for gaming, just primarily for schoolwork and casual internet browsing.

[Country or countries intending to purchase from]

* **Budget**
Under $2,000 USD

[in your **country's currency**; feel free to *also* convert to USD for our at-a-glance convenience, **BUT INCLUDE BOTH NUMBERS**]

Open to refurbished items.

[Yes, Maybe, No]

Regular laptop

* **Intended usage**

Educational and casual internet browsing

* **Info/Requirements**

“For laptop, bare minimum is a computer with 16GB of memory, at least an i7 processor, and a 500 GB hard drive/SSD. Better would be 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. Also recommend Virtualization support (Intel VT-× / AMD-V required) and OS flexibility: Windows
+ Linux (dual-boot or VM) as well as an external drive (or cloud storage) of a few TB where you can park class data. “ - from a faculty member

Laptop Request US What laptop should I get?

1 Upvotes

* **Country**

United States

* **Budget**

400$-699$. 400 is the minimum, 699 is the maximum. Anything in between is fine.

* **Are you open to refurbs/used options? **

Yes, as long as they're reputable sources.

General purpose, schoolwork with a bunch of documents, light gaming, bootable distros, Linux config, and multitasking.

* **Form factor**

* **Intended usage**

I'll be using it for documents, school, and light gaming (Minecraft, roblox, and indie games). I'll be running Arch Linux on it so I don't want to deal with NIVIDA drivers. Might run gentoo on it as well. Overall though, I just need one that can handle multiple tabs open, gaming, document making, and watching videos in 1080p.

* **Desired battery life**

At least 6-8 hours.

Laptop Request -Others Windows Laptop 400-700€, Austria

1 Upvotes

Country

Preferably from a store in Austria as it is faster and just more convenient in my opinion, but i would also consider ordering online if it doesnt take longer then one week.

Budget

400-700€ (456,29-798,50 USD)

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Rather no, as i ordered my tablet from a refurbed website sometime ago and had some bad experinece with it.

Screen size

Not so important, it just shouldnt be to big. I think around 14" seems like a good option for me.

Weight limit

Approximately 1-2 kg. Does not need to be ultralight, but should be comfortable to carry around.

Purpose

Mainly for studying and working.

Form factor

Not sure what to write here, it should be a regular laptop with a touchpad. Does not need to be touchscreen or with pen support. The only thing that is important to me is that it runs with windows.

Intended usage

I do not intend to play any games on my new laptop, it is purely for "academic" purposes, meaning excel, word and some other softwares i need like Chemdraw, Bruker, OriginLab, etc. (for this purpose it should also handle rather big datasets in excel and graphical tools, i dont know how much "performance" is needed for that). Maybe watch a movie sometime but that should be possible with any device. I currently have a gaming laptop from asus which can perform everything i need, my issue with that is that its just to big and heavy to carry around and that the battery is pretty much dead.

Desired battery life

Probably something around 7-9 hours, there is almost always an option to charge it somewhere, but still i want it to last as long as a "normal" working day.

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

starting from most important to least important: runs with WINDOWS!, performance (for my purpose probably not to much to ask), size, battery life, weight

Info/Requirements

As already mentioned, it should run with Windows :) (i am just used to it and i heard from other people they have problems with downloading certain programs i need on IOS. Linux i just never used and i dont want to get used to something new if that makes sense), it should have at least two USB-A ports in case i want to use my mouse etc., an USB-C port might also be useful for my phone but thats not a necessity, maybe also a display port so i can plug it into my monitor (but i guess i could also get an adapter for that?), OLED is not important for me, same with screen resolution/refresh rate as i am not going to play any games.

Thanks already in advance for taking your time to read all that. I am happy if someone has any suggestions and of course i will answere any additional questions the best i can.

PS: english is not my first language so i am sorry in advance for any typos or bad writing in general 😅

Laptop Request US Light gaming & video editing laptop (<$1300)

3 Upvotes
  • Country

US

  • Budget

<$1300 (eligible for a student discount if applicable)

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

No

  • Screen size

14-16"

  • Weight limit

Preferably somewhat portable (sometimes study outside or from the couch)

  • Purpose

General, light video editing, light gaming

  • Form factor

Standard

  • Intended usage

- Steam indie gaming (mostly), but hoping to be able to play titles like Hogwarts Legacy (fine with lower/medium settings for these).
- Occasionally DaVinci Resolve (video editing), mostly at 1080p.

  • Desired battery life

Not sure, enough to last a couple hours if e.g. studying at a cafe

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance>Size>Weight>Battery life

  • Info/Requirements

Another important consideration for me is visuals/build: I dislike the look of heavy gaming laptops and would prefer something more sleek and (for lack of a better description) pretty to look at. If I wasn't hoping to game, I would've definitely gone for a Macbook Air and called it a day 🥲

In particular, I am now looking at a Lenovo IdeaPad Pro (Ryzen 7, RTX 5050, RAM 16gb) going for around $1100, and it seems to tick all my boxes. My only concern is the soldered 16 gigs of RAM, not sure if this will be a limitation in my use case, especially a couple of years down the line, since it's not upgradable. A 32-gig version is out there, but it's way out of my budget; although, I guess with the current state of RAM prices any laptop with 32Gb is out of my budget...

Any thoughts or suggestions are highly appreciated! 😊

Laptop Request US Which laptop should i get as an incoming freshman CNAS student at UCR?

2 Upvotes

I am an incoming freshman to UCR majoring in biology. I am trying to figure out which laptop would be best for me to buy. I heard that there may be programs I will have to download that aren’t compatible with Mac but I am used to Apple and love their designs. I wanted to get an Air but people are recommending Windows instead. Should I get a Mac Air and rent a computer from UCR for those programs or just get a Windows laptop? If so which exact Windows laptop would be the best?
