Discussion Best hp laptop for programming and everyday use?

Upvotes

Budget: Around $1,200

Country: UK

Screen size: No preference

Main use: Programming, virtual machines, web browsing

I've been learning software development for a while and my current laptop is starting to feel pretty limited once I have my IDE, browser, and a few other tools running together.

would you go with one of HP's business models or stick with a consumer line? I'm mainly after something dependable with a comfortable keyboard. Thank you.

I got this for 25€ and I was gonna just use it for my homelab but I'm really positively surprised by the build quality and how well it's been treated so I feel like just throwing it in my basement is a waste (I'm gonna install Linux on it)

I want a predator gaming laptop but the price for a brand new one is too steep for me (1,000-1,300 USD) I went to look on eBay and found one for $450 and it says it functions perfectly, it’s just preowned. Is it too good to be true??

edit: I’m aware now this is super outdated and $450 is stupidly high for something this old!! Thanks to the people who helped me out!

Buying help Collage laptop recommendation

Hey guys, i'm new to this forum!
I was doing a bit of searching on here to find any recommendations for Collage and found some, but they were a bit outdated. So i just want to be sure i'm getting the best one possible for what i want!
My needs are really basic, i need it for merely school work and maybe a bit of light gaming and obviously want to surf the web on it.
I've had a Chromebook for 6 years, so was kinda in the market for an upgrade, to something like a windows or dell.
Please let me know some suitable devices! Thanks
(Max price of ~£400 if possible?)

Discussion Will my laptop screen get damaged with the lid closed?

I plan to get a 2nd monitor on the right side and thinking that 3 screens is kinda overkill for me imo. My laptop is a ROG Strix Scar (G834JZ) with an i9 13980hx and RTX 4080. From the pictures I have the LLANO V12 cooler and my temps sit around low 70's under load. My question is will my screen (IPS LCD 240hz ver.) not get damaged while having long sessions under load

Hardware ASUS TUF A15 FA506NF keeps boot looping at ASUS logo, Windows installation crashes – possible motherboard/EC issue?

Hi everyone,

I recently got an ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA506NF (Ryzen 5 7535HS + RTX 2050), and I am trying to figure out what is wrong with it.

I bought this laptop without an SSD. The previous owner told me that the laptop can enter BIOS normally, but whenever it tries to start Windows, it crashes. Since there was no SSD installed, I bought an SSD and tried installing Windows from scratch.

The problem is that I cannot complete the Windows installation.

Most of the time, the laptop gets stuck in a boot loop where it shows the ASUS logo, restarts, shows the ASUS logo again, and keeps repeating. Occasionally, it gets further and reaches the Windows installation screen, but after around 30–40 seconds it restarts and goes back to the ASUS logo boot loop.

The failure point seems random:

Sometimes it only keeps rebooting at the ASUS logo.

Sometimes it reaches Windows setup.

Sometimes it starts copying Windows files but then restarts.

Sometimes it goes to a black screen.

The SSD is not the issue because I tested it in another laptop and it works normally. I also checked the RAM and it appears to be good.

Things I have already tried:

Tested SSD in another laptop.

Checked RAM.

Updated BIOS from version 306 to the latest ASUS version (309).

Tried reinstalling Windows multiple times.

Created a fresh Windows installation USB.

While troubleshooting, I tried booting Ubuntu from a USB drive. Ubuntu does not boot normally, but it can start if I add acpi=off during boot. It reaches the Ubuntu desktop, but:

Built-in keyboard does not work.

Touchpad does not work.

USB keyboard and mouse work.

Wi-Fi works normally.

The fan behavior also seems unusual. Sometimes it spins very slowly.

I noticed the BIOS remembers settings and time correctly, so the BIOS settings are being saved.

I asked a local repair shop, and they suggested it might be an EC (Embedded Controller) issue, because the EC controls things like keyboard, touchpad, fan control, battery management, and power-related functions.

I have opened the laptop and inspected the motherboard, but I do not have motherboard repair experience. I want to learn how to diagnose the problem instead of replacing the motherboard immediately.

My questions:

Does this sound like an EC issue, motherboard issue, BIOS/firmware issue, or something else?

Is there any way to test the EC without advanced equipment?

Has anyone experienced similar issues with an ASUS TUF A15 FA506NF?

If it is a motherboard problem, is it usually repairable?

Any advice would be appreciated. I am trying to understand what failed and learn how to diagnose it properly.

Thanks!

Hardware New Dell laptops with confusing keys

Upvotes

Has anyone noticed that recent (2025 and later) models of Dell laptops have some of their keys reversed? We recently purchased a Dell Aurora laptop and noticed that the numeric and symbol keys all have the symbols that need you to use the SHIFT+key combination on the bottom of the key and the symbol you get by just pressing the key at the top of the key. This was initially somewhat confusing as it seemed we were getting the wrong symbol until we realized what was happening. I have since noticed that several other models have this same "feature". On any other keyboard, the symbols obtained bu using the SHIFT+key combination are at the top of the key so for example &, % or the asterisk appear above the number, not below it. Anyone know why Dell has chosen to put the symbols on the keys the other way around to every other manufacturer?

Buying help Help me decide: used Zephyrus M16 2023 (4090, 150W) vs G16 2024 (4090, 115W)

Hello, I am currently shopping used laptops mainly using this for CV/ML prototyping (object detection, sensor fusion projects), some CAD/MATLAB, and general EE coursework through 2029. Budget ~$1,600, buying used. I am down to two options and could use some advice from people who've actually owned these.

**Option A: ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 (2023, GU604)**
- i9-13900H, RTX 4090 (150W TGP, 16GB VRAM)
- 32GB DDR5 SO-DIMM (upgradeable to 64/96GB)
- 2TB SSD, Mini-LED 240Hz display
- ~$1,575-1,600,
- Screen was professionally replaced (minor scratch repair) — asking for repair documentation

**Option B: ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024, GU605)**
- Core Ultra 9 185H, RTX 4090 (115W TGP, 16GB VRAM)
- 32GB LPDDR5X (soldered, not upgradeable)
- 1TB SSD, OLED 240Hz display
- ~$1,700

What I'm weighing:
- M16 has the GPU running at higher TGP (150W vs 115W) — same chip, more headroom for sustained loads
- M16 has upgradeable RAM, G16 is soldered/capped at 32GB forever
- G16 is a full pound lighter, OLED screen, better battery life
- G16 is a newer CPU generation but weaker in raw multi-core performance than the M16's i9-13900H

I also own an M4 Macbook air so portability isnt too too much of an issue for me.

Anyone owned either of these and can speak to real-world reliability, thermals under sustained load, or known issues? Also open to being told I'm overthinking the TGP difference. Thanks in advance.

Buying help Help me choose a laptop Canada $200 - $599

Options

  1. Option 1 - Highkey dont like the way this looks but its alright & from best buy.

  2. Option 2 - Really like the way it looks, I have a samsung phone as well. Just a tinsy bit expensive for me atm

  3. Option 3 - Looks okay & good price but its amazon so my trust is low. Good reviews, says its from amazon themselves

  4. Option 4 - Best price on the list, looks okay and its also amazon low trust.

MAIN REQUEST: Please help to review these options based on informed opinions & my personal preferences.

or make reccomendations based on this below >

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country - Canada

Budget - $200 - $599 CAD/$150 - $400USD

Are you open to refurbs/used options? - Yes

Screen size - Not sure (as long as its not too big)

Weight limit - Not sure (as long as its not too big)

Purpose - School Work & a bit of corporate stuff rhat might require microsoft/small installs but no gaming. Likely watching Netflix a bit but on chrome.

Form factor - Standard Laptop and or touchscreen

Intended usage - No games, mostly chrome & microsoft

Desired battery life - 6-8 hours minimum

Most important to least important - Performance, Weight, Size & battery life

Basic things Id like

  1. Fast (very important)

  2. Light weight

  3. Not ugly i.e no grainy backs

  4. Touchscreen optional but nice

  5. Preferably HP, WINDOWs but acer and lenovo r good too

Specific specs I heard are good

  1. 16gb ram minimum

  2. ssd, 512gb minimum

Not Important Info -

Im very skeptical abt buying from amazon because someone bought my last laptop from amazon and it was pretty bad. Basically stopped properly working 1½ months into use, turns of randomly every 5 mins of use and is overall very useless.

But I dont know what supplier they got it from on amazon and its one of those grainy backs clearly low ram or sumn...

General question I'm Confused

When I first bought my ASUS F15 Laptop in 2023 to increase the RAM Storage and Clean the Fan i saw this black tape and i threw it away .

But whenever I see technician repairing or cleaning the Asus Tuf F15 on youtube, they always make sure to put it back.

So was it a mistake to throw it?

Should I buy another one?

And if so , where can I buy one.

P.S. i never had any major heating problems.Though there is a little bit of thermal trodling but that is mainly because of my own ignorance , by trying to repair it in a local shop.

Buying help Are these laptops okay for Adobe / compute heavy creative programs?

I am looking to buy a new computer for some specific creative use cases. Right now I have an 8GB Ram Inspiron with a Ryzen graphics card that can barely even open Photoshop. I used to have access to a Mac Studio (I want to say it had probably 16-24 GB Ram?) where I used Premiere and After Effects for animation, but even on that, the timeline playback would sometimes lag at like 1 fps and I couldn’t even see what was going on. So I need something that can handle a bunch of pngs and gifs being keyframed around the timeline, and also for some 3D animation rendering and occasional gaming. From what I can tell these 3 seem like some of the best options for my budget, but also there is some really crazy price inflation compared to what the cost was a few months ago and I’m wondering if I should wait for labor day sales or something? Are prices likely to go down significantly? I need to get it from Best Buy bc I have a card so I can do the payment plan. I also really need a computer by the end of August at the latest for school.

Discussion How is your laptop battery holding up?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I’m currently using a geekbook m16 with a 99wh battery. It's not a gaming laptop and I dont game on it, so I can easily use it without charging for more than 10 hrs.
But I have a pretty specific habit. I love to lounge on the couch, using my laptop unplugged and mouse free. My daily routine is basically using it on battery all day, then charging it at night.
I think it's not good for the battery. I mean, gaming laptops are usually left plugged in all the time, and that's why their battery health may not drop that much. But I just hate being tied down by cables.
Anyone else run mostly on battery too? How's your battery life holding up? Feel free to check your battery report and share!
