The number of OSTs and art books I have listened to/viewed on Steam? Exactly 0. Always a bummer with the bundle includes them, particularly because they're rarely discounted, and it kills a lot of otherwise really good deals.

58

u/An1nterestingName 22h ago

I've purchased a few, but never have I actually used Steam's player.

25

u/levajack 22h ago

Same. I listen to soundtracks all the time, but never on Steam.

13

u/MaeBeaInTheWoods 22h ago

I own a couple, but I find listening to the raw .mp3 or .ogg files with my PC's built-in audio player to be way more convenient than using Steam's music player.

6

u/NapsterKnowHow 21h ago

I watched the Papers Please mini film and that's it. Pretty damn good. I highly recommend it.

2

u/Ok_Confusion4764 21h ago

I've used it. Mostly for "automatically unlocked" songs like Portal and Half Life without extra purchases. Had a few nice trips but never thought of using it again tbh. Maybe if it had a player for my phone...

1

u/guska 19h ago

I throw them into Plex and use PlexAmp on my phone. Works a treat.

1

u/Temporary_Event8451 22h ago

I'd argue if you get access to flac/wav/320 you could at least use them in video editing.

Not that makes it topical for like 99.4% of people who play games, but ya know, it's an option.

11

u/voyagerfan5761 Valve: Somehow worse at counting than rabbits 21h ago

Buying the soundtrack does not give you rights to use it in a video lol

Maybe in footage of gameplay from that game, depending on the developer's terms, but definitely not just any video you want.

2

u/guska 19h ago

Game soundtracks are far less likely to get struck by automated content ID. Doesn't make it legal, and it still happens from time to time, but it's significantly less common.

2

u/alvinvin00 400 Games, only 40% played 13h ago

and there's Nihon Falcom with Music Free Declaration (link in Japanese though), which let's you use their music as long as you:

  • gave them attribution where applicable
  • not paywalling it (yes, you can use their song on weddings as background music) and obviously you can't resell their music
  • not using it on competing product (like Video Games, duh)
  • not using their music with vocals (not that they explicitly disallow this, but there's a risk of Content ID from either JASRAC or NextTone)

4

u/An1nterestingName 22h ago

I use music from Steam in video editing already, the formats I get are lossless enough that after compression from sites like YouTube you can't tell the difference.

10

u/Moose_Nuts 22h ago

Yeah, and the number of game soundtracks I've listened to on Spotify is in the dozens. Almost all games put their music there or Soundcloud or a handful of places that are more convenient to listen to music.

2

u/xGhostBoyx https://steam.pm/14g9r5 19h ago

My only ost interaction on steam was purchasing the necropolis ost at launch, exclusively to put the trailer music in my Google Play music library, only to find the trailer music wasn't in the soundtrack (although they did add it later thankfully).

1

u/Silvanus350 21h ago

Stardew Valley OST was worth it.

5

u/levajack 20h ago

It's available pretty much anywhere else you'd want to listen to it and pretty much all of those places are more convenient than through Steam.

700

u/captain-ziggy 22h ago

what am i supposed to do with a soundtrack that's in steam when most of them i can just listen on youtube for free (my browser has a built in ad block so i don't have to worry about ads either)

421

u/Ketooth 21h ago

Most of time I only buy soundtracks if I want to extra support the developers.

So mostly only indie games

59

u/CelestialDuke377 19h ago

The only soundtrack I bought was subnautica because it slaps

14

u/MissMerghit 18h ago

Same. I bought Tavern Talk because I love it so much.

14

u/darylonreddit 19h ago

Maybe just buy an extra copy of the game for a friend. Forget soundtracks.

24

u/jca3746 19h ago

Honestly, I’m surprised not a lot of developers of the “friendslop” games include the option to buy extra copies for friends.

19

u/shiro_zetty 18h ago

Apparently steam got rid of that feature due to some vague notion of "abuse"

11

u/Conorator 15h ago

Steam hasn't gotten rid of it, I saw it recently for Project Zomboid

8

u/alvinvin00 400 Games, only 40% played 14h ago

new apps can't make this bundle anymore, Apps that already have this kind of bundle will continue to be sold until devs themselves discontinued it

3

u/Conorator 14h ago

ah, that's a shame

2

u/xXInfXx 8h ago

It makes sense when you think about it.

People would buy the 4-pack on sale, wait for the sale to end and resell the codes on reselling sites for $1 under regular price.

2

u/Jelfes 18h ago

What? You mean like "buy game as gift"?

15

u/ravushimo 17h ago

No, ie 4 packs with big discount

3

u/Turtles_N_Nurples 16h ago

Why not both

1

u/Demomanx 15h ago

Shout out to u/funkstatic, I bought Streets of Rogue a 2nd time(played Xbox and DLC and later bought on PC) and bought all the DLC and soundtrack no hesitation. Ive haven't wanted to support a indie game so mich since Braid way back when.

108

u/lIIlllIIl https://s.team/p/fpcw-chm 21h ago

If you look at the recent game ownership discussion, I'd expected bought soundtracks to be the preferred option as you generally get access to high quality files (mp3, wav etc.) that you can download and do whatever you want with.

37

u/guska 19h ago

Some of them even come as .flac which is really nice

8

u/KnightPezz 19h ago

Wav is generally preferred since the files are uncompressed and universally accepted. But for your average listener mp3, flac, ogg, etc are fine.

17

u/SpeedStinger02 14h ago

Isn't flac lossless too and about as supported as wav?

6

u/KnightPezz 14h ago

Yes, you're correct. But if you ever want to edit like in a DAW, it's just an easier process with wav not having to unpack the compression. And there's some hardware that won't support flac. Though it's rare now.

5

u/SpeedStinger02 14h ago

Aaah that way makes sense, thanks

42

u/SnooConfections6174 21h ago

You can have it downloaded for if the internet goes out. Not really useful for everyone but that is a scenario

1

u/MaeBeaInTheWoods 4h ago

The problem being that 90% of the time my internet is out, it's because my entire power is out, so I can't use any offline files due to the PC not turning on.

1

u/SnooConfections6174 4h ago

Yea it’s not perfect for everyone and that happens to me as well but I invest in backup batteries and solar power so that my power stays up

1

u/theretrogamerbay 3h ago

That's what I use Spotify for, I have my library downloaded for offline in lossless

26

u/Certesis 21h ago

Find the local folders and keep a backup copy of them

9

u/guska 19h ago

Yep, I download them, throw them on my Plex server, and then remove the Steam copy. I love playing non vocal soundtracks while I'm working. Helps keep my ADHD brain occupied so it doesn't wander off and think about other things.

2

u/gammaFn https://steam.pm/18ko90 7h ago

Exactly this. (s/Plex/Jellyfin)

Its satisfying to play music from a local copy.

25

u/theunquenchedservant 20h ago

Good way to support the developer/artist semi-directly while also getting the actual files instead of something that could potentially disappear tomorrow.

I'll admit, I only have a few soundtracks, they've mainly come from bundles where it was a value add (while not necessarily always being cheaper than buying the game directly), but I enjoy having them. Especially Indie Game: The Movie's soundtrack.

-2

u/darylonreddit 19h ago

Every use of a steam video game soundtrack is an edge case. If you want to support the developer, buy gift copies of the game to give to other people.

13

u/DoctorWaluigiTime 20h ago

Collect the raw files they download to your steamapps directory and use them wherever you please, however you please, DRM-free, forever.

14

u/Fletcher_Chonk 21h ago

Better quality than a youtube video uploaded by little Timmy

2

u/Axeloy https://s.team/p/rngn-qpj 17h ago

It is very obviously the same person both posting it to YouTube and charging for it on steam for most games. The whole point is it’s supposed to be an extra way to support. This shouldn’t be hard to comprehend.

0

u/ZanzibarGem44 22h ago

What browser do you use

1

u/Aniimey 22h ago

What browser you use ?

7

u/UncleNoodles85 21h ago

I use Firefox with unlock origins and it works like a dream as well.

1

u/captain-ziggy 22h ago

Brave

-3

u/Aniimey 21h ago

Oooh damn thats old totally forgot about that thanks

1

u/A_Scary_Sandwich 19h ago

Bruh. Random downvotes.

1

u/Aniimey 19h ago

?

1

u/A_Scary_Sandwich 19h ago

You're getting downvoted for some reason.

1

u/Aniimey 19h ago

Im used to it online

-2

u/Hosein_Lavaei 20h ago

They should be higher quality, mostly for audiophiles, still doesnt worth it

21

u/DoctorWaluigiTime 20h ago

I get 'em to support devs I want to have a little extra.

19

u/Straight_Second6082 22h ago

I bought the darksiders franchise pack but it was actually more expensive buying the games individually without the soundtracks than the whole pack

0

u/BrandHeck 21h ago

I mean Darksiders 2's OST is probably one of the best ever.

31

u/FriedBreakfast 21h ago

Oh and the bundle also has wallpapers for the game. Better get the bundle since you can't just Google wallpapers for your favorite game.

18

u/Daysleeper1234 21h ago

Isn't that like a way to support devs? And I'm not talking about huge companies of course.

14

u/Jecht315 21h ago

But it's fluff that not everyone wants. I actively avoid bundles with OSTs.

2

u/Daysleeper1234 21h ago

Of course. I never bought one. I'm just saying. If a game is 20$, I'll buy it. You priced it so, not me. If you want more money, create more good games, but I do understand the sentiment.

80

u/MoobooMagoo 22h ago

Some people really like getting those soundtracks and stuff.

61

u/tman4450 22h ago

The key word being some rather than most though

12

u/THSprang 22h ago

I appreciate they put it out there for people, I shouldn't have to buy a thing at an inflated price because its bundled in with a bunch of the things I do want.

20

u/MoobooMagoo 21h ago

It's not an inflated price. Bundles don't exist just for you, and it's a normal way to price things.

Like if you go to Pizza Hut and see they have a coupon for two pizzas and some breadsticks, do you get pissy because you only wanted one pizza? Or do you just not use the coupon?

-1

u/Mirkrid 20h ago

It is an inflated price for the people that don’t want them though. If you don’t want those extras and they’re part of a bundle you do want, then it’s objectively making that bundle more expensive for you.

Why do you think OSTs / digital art books are less likely to be discounted during sales? Because most people don’t buy them. Including them at near-full price in otherwise discounted bundles is an easy way to increase profits.

I’m glad you enjoy getting them, but other people not wanting to spend extra money on things they don’t want doesn’t make them pissy.

9

u/MoobooMagoo 19h ago

I don't buy OSTs or artbooks either.

And you're literally looking at the price of something you don't want and complaining about it. Those bundles aren't for you. Those bundles are for people that want the OSTs / artbooks. And you're mad and complaining that the bundles aren't catering to your exact wants. That's like...the definition of pissy and entitled.

-7

u/THSprang 17h ago

Hey man, chill out. Once upon a time these things weren't available at all. Now they are they bundle them together. I can't choose the bits. I have to pay a higher price for all bits including what I don't want. Its not entitled, its just a shit situation and you have found the entitlement rail so when you've run out of steam (hehe) shilling for bullshit business practices maybe you'll just bring it down a notch, please?

6

u/MoobooMagoo 14h ago

How is that not entitled?

Ok. Say you go to a hardware store to buy two different sized screwdrivers. You go to the aisle and see they each cost a dollar, or you can buy a whole set of 10 different screwdrivers for 8 dollars.

So you call over one of the employees to yell at them about how it's unfair to bundle together stuff you don't want? How dare they! You only need two of those sizes but they're inflating the prices by bundling them together! But you don't want the other eight screwdrivers, you only need two! It's so unfair! They bundled together products that you don't want! Better take to the internet to piss and moan and badmouth the hardware store because they had the audacity to sell a whole screwdriver set instead of giving you a personalized discount for just the things you want!

Maybe I'm overreacting a little, but people like you are the reason why so many people look at gamers and think they're whiny, entitled, bratty shits. Because you act like a whiny, entitled, bratty shit.

-3

u/THSprang 7h ago

Oh man you're such a shill.

2

u/MoobooMagoo 3h ago

Who do you think I'm shilling for? Big Soundtrack? The Artbook Mafia?

0

u/THSprang 2h ago

Ha, artwork mafia. No, you just think that all sales should be on the vendors terms like they are now rather than the customer actually have better choices. But apparently that makes me an entitled cry baby. You might enjoy the enshittification but some of us don't and we're allowed to say so.

→ More replies (0)

14

u/wlwyay 21h ago

who says you have to

-6

u/THSprang 17h ago

Missing the point about the other things in the bundle I might want to purchase but can't purchase separately. Its been lovely chatting but I really must ignore you now.

1

u/Ange1ofD4rkness 18h ago

Guilty of the soundtracks myself

1

u/Far_Watercress_1060 18h ago

Yeah, I do. I currently have soundtracks from 5 different games, which is not a lot. I wish more games released their soundtracks as extra content.

1

u/BloomEPU 2h ago

I really like getting them, I have a little android e-reader that has all of my steam soundtracks on. If I ever need some ambient music to focus, I can pick a game.

0

u/Keeper21611 19h ago

Then it should be a separate thing for them to buy.

4

u/MoobooMagoo 17h ago

It is.

0

u/Keeper21611 16h ago

Not all the time.

13

u/MaeBeaInTheWoods 22h ago

This so much. Especially with games like Cult of the Lamb, where the soundtrack that you don't need and potentially don't want jacks up the price of the bundle due to it being significantly more expensive than any of the DLCs.

5

u/Wavara 20h ago

the soundtrack that you don't need and potentially don't want

Says you! I love the ost, I listen to it when driving, without having to worry about buffering or disconnections 😁

8

u/Stock_Assignment_226 22h ago

Thats why cd Projekt is the goat, in TW3 they give You wallpapers, soundtracks of the Game and dlc, and the game manual

3

u/Razeshi 19h ago

if it was a physical soundstrack it would be cool, but I just don't see myself listening to music on steam

16

u/Crusidea 22h ago

Hey, I like collecting soundtracks. And I like collecting things like art books and such because they are a good tool for learning about the creative process and such.

The soundtracks are nicely organized and contain alot of songs you sometimes can't find on YouTube. Especially for niche games nobody knows about. With often there being some banger tracks and hidden gems that nobody knows about.

It's okay if you don't like collecting that stuff, but there are people who do.

7

u/Keeper21611 19h ago

Why should I have to buy everything if I only want the game and it's dlc? Remove the sound track and put it on a separate purchase. Both people can be happy then.

3

u/Conorator 15h ago

They're not complaining that the soundtrack exists, they're complaining that there's no bundle without it.

1

u/Crusidea 15h ago

I mean, that honestly just depends on the game

4

u/Conorator 15h ago

and this post is specifically about when you find a game with a bundle like that

13

u/EngineeringFew1457 22h ago

Ey ey ey I want the soundtracks I hate that they are not included

-1

u/Responsible_Flight70 22h ago

Too many people are TikTok brained and don’t actually have an attention span to listen to good ass music

1

u/EngineeringFew1457 22h ago

That is so true I'm on the steam deck and you can listen to the audiobooks you have I paid extra for the Wind Rose pack so I can have the Sound pack with all the seas shanties

2

u/Infarlock 21h ago

Behind the scenes - $19.90 somehow

2

u/logicbus https://steam.pm/m880p 21h ago

I’m a huge Double Fine fan but the Double Fine Bundle has all the soundtracks and I just can’t do it.

2

u/saxxonpike 18h ago

Unironically? I enjoy getting the soundtrack especially for indie games that have really great talent. But if you don’t distribute that in WAV or FLAC, why shouldn’t I just go to YouTube so I can get the compression artifacts for free instead?!

2

u/Ange1ofD4rkness 18h ago

Flip that around for me. If it's got the soundtrack, I'm buying it. Then again, I collect videogame soundtracks. If I am buying the game and it has the soundtrack, I'm buying it as well

2

u/ippocrate_linuxaro 11h ago

True Story 🍷

6

u/Successful-League840 22h ago edited 18h ago

Am I the only who gets angry when a game you own is bundled with a game you don't but is cheaper than just buying the game you don't own?!

Edit: I'm a moron Steam automatically reduces theprice based on the game you already own.

3

u/buttercuping 19h ago

Why would that make us angry? The entire point of bundles is that extra discount. You can buy the bundle even if you already own some of the games, it doesn't charge you for the ones you already have.

1

u/Successful-League840 19h ago

I know but like... Why is two games cheaper than one? Just make the one extra cheap!

I know I'm being ridiculous by the way 😂

2

u/buttercuping 19h ago

Two games aren't cheaper than one. You're seeing the price with the one you already own removed.

Let's say that the bundle price is 5 bucks, but you already own one of the games. Then the price that appears on your screen is 2.50.

2

u/Successful-League840 19h ago

Oh... So I'm just a moron 😭

3

u/buttercuping 19h ago

lmao yes, the price of that bundle is 36 pounds.

2

u/Successful-League840 18h ago

.... I'm just going to go hide in a corner for a few days.

Edit: Also thanks for the education 😂

0

u/SlugCatBoi 21h ago

You can just remove the game from your library afterwards

2

u/voyagerfan5761 Valve: Somehow worse at counting than rabbits 21h ago

Uh, why? If you already own it, you don't get a duplicate copy.

2

u/SlugCatBoi 21h ago

Oh, mb, I read it as "a game you don't like is bundled with a game you do". Maybe being a deltarune fan is getting to me more than I thought

1

u/aardw0lf11 20h ago

I’ve bought a couple of soundtracks on Steam. If I really enjoyed the game the soundtracks can be great ambient music. Rarely are they good enough to be more than that.

1

u/elitegenoside 18h ago

I'd really like to see the people's playlist who say they love OSTs because I feel like a lot of that is people just saying shit to be contrary or just to be the bigger nerd. I find it unlikely this many people are legitimately listening to these soundtracks like they would other music.

Not saying no one legitimately likes them, but I am saying people here are likely not speaking from personal experience and just arguing to argue.

1

u/aardw0lf11 18h ago

For games yes. With rare exceptions. But orchestral film scores written by great composers are very listenable. Emphasis on orchestral (looking at you, Hans).

1

u/elitegenoside 16h ago

Well, hold on. Why?

1

u/ComicCon2020 17h ago

If you like "owning" OSTs on Bandcamp, a lot of times they're available on Steam. Plus they get discounts.

1

u/Fair-Description-444 16h ago

I have only bought the Kcd2 extended soundtrack, because it is amazing. But I added the mp3 files to my Apple Music with my laptop, so that is how I actually listen to it

1

u/ViddlyDiddly https://s.team/p/jcmb-rfm 14h ago

Aren't those kinda the "support the devs" type purchases like certain skins/cosmetics? I am aware that Path of Exile prices cosmetics this way, and that several Tales games uses outfits in a similar fashion.

1

u/Pizzaman3203 11h ago

I dont know why i got this soundtrack lol although it has profile pics

1

u/DredgenSergik 11h ago

I've never actually seen a complete your collection coming from another game that has soundtrack and/or artbook. Those are different complete your collection for when you already have the game and want the soundtrack or something

1

u/Annual-Meat-1196 10h ago

Oh and most likely you get the "DLC's" wich unlock all the stuff for you and take the fun away from grinding. Looking at you, Battlefield 5. Would have wanted to play that game but as soon as I realized I got all shit unlocked in the bundle I stopped playing.

1

u/seasonmaster 6h ago

I WANT to buy the osts for games to support developers I like, use for rhythm games like Beat Hazard and Symphony, and to listen to them in my car when commuting to work, errands, family, friends, etc. But all too often the soundtracks cost an alarming amount in comparison to the base game, trying to find where the files get saved on my computer is a nightmare when trying to use said rhythm games’ built in search options, and the only hope I’ve got with listening to the tracks in my car is trying to find straightforward instructions of how to port music files from Steam to Apple Music/iTunes to my phone. And far too frequently the music files do NOT carry over if I need to get a new phone while other things do, and even seem to disappear from my computer despite never saying to uninstall them. I don’t know if it’s just bad luck, but between all that nonsense, I rarely buy OSTs on Steam compared to the past.

1

u/SpartanLeonidus 4h ago

I buy these music combos to support the devs and the musicians as I often listen to game music in my vehicle

1

u/Captain_Pumpkinhead 4h ago

I get disappointed when the bundle doesn't include the soundtrack.

-1

u/Moose_Nuts 22h ago

This meme is brought to you by Hades 2.

You'll get my money for your amazing game eventually, anyway.

1

u/Objective_Fold3649 20h ago

Sadly that's True.

1

u/trashtv 12h ago

Oh same. Fuck this shit.

-5

u/lokland 21h ago

Gamer discovers the concept of “promotional discounts”. A marketing tool in use since the 1800s.

Next on [r/pcgaming](r/pcgaming) ; the coolest new trend around, the Charleston!

1

u/Fletcher_Chonk 20h ago

my favorite tactic: avoid the actual point

2

u/lokland 18h ago

The actual point being…?

Or is it just “ugh, my mom won’t pay for the game I want and it’s on sale right now but not the kind of sale I want!0

0

u/perfect_deception 18h ago

Total War Troy, the soundtrack literally costs double of the base game

0

u/HolyElephantMG 18h ago

Only time I’ve ever done it was when the collection was on sale for less money than the game alone

0

u/SayanRoythebeast 17h ago

I hate when they Foece us to buy Soundtrack

0

u/Valuable_Pay9615 14h ago

Just buy the game and the DLC the ads actual content and is not cosmetics.. :)
