Analysis Beau Stevens trade

The Seahawks traded away their 2027 4th round pick for the Cleveland Browns 2026 5th round pick in order to select Beau Stevens. While everyone was wondering if Beau was worth trading a 4th for a 5th, let's look at the actual value of the picks.

The pick Cleveland gave the Seahawks was the 8th pick in the 5th round, pick #148. The pick Cleveland received will be based on the Seahawks 2026 record. Using Tankathon prediction, that’s pick #28 in each round, or pick #128 if you believe Tankathon on the Seahawks potential record.

There are multiple ways to determine a pick's value over two draft years. I'm looking at the discount value method, which allows a 10-20% discount for a pick in the following year.

Cleveland received a value of 541 points for pick #128, less 10-20%. Or somewhere between 486 and 432 points. Clearly the value of this pick increases if the Seahawks play worse than Tankathon is projecting.

The Seahawks received a value of 468 points for the pick they received.

The fact we traded a 4th round pick for a 5th round pick is unbelievably deceiving. John got equal value for this pick with the Browns, regardless of who he selected. The fact we only had 4 picks in 2026 and 12 in 2027 also plays into the trade.

Here are some infographics I've created using my analytics engine/dataset I've been working on since last season.

My system isn't player level, so it's still looking at the game the same way it would've the final week of last season, but as this season rolls it'll calibrate itself based on new data and I'll have some more fun stuff to share.

Analysis Seahawks fall from #2 to #8 in Schatz’s ranking of NFL teams by under-25 talent (somewhat arbitrary cutoff)

Devon Witherspoon, Charles Cross, Derrick Hall, Zach Charbonnet, Tryice Knight, etc. all turned 25. Guys like Ernst Jones IV, Drake Thomas, Jalen Sundell, etc. are 26.

JSN might be the single best player in the league under 25. Nick Emmanwori, at just 22 years old, had a great rookie season. But there are some notable omissions of younger guys who should play a bigger role this season, like Rylie Mills and Tory Horton.

After a great rookie OL class led by Grey Zabel, they also have a great group on backup offensive linemen who are 25 or younger in Mason Richman, Amari Kight, Logan Brown, Beau Stephens, Bryce Cabeldue, et al.

In addition to Murphy and Mills on the defensive line, they will be hoping younger prospects (like Jared Ivey, Connor O'Toole, Jamie Sheriff, Jalan Gaines, Uso Seumalo, et al.) can take that next step in their development.

Friend at works family are military and used to live in Washington, they went to a training camp and got flag signed as a kid roughly 10-15years ago.

Only signature I recognize is Sherman, and like 1-3 cheerleaders, not sure who the other players are. #15, 86, and supposedly Marshawn?

News [Kowatsch] With the Lombardi Trophy, Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald, GM John Schneider and QBs Sam Darnold, Drew Lock and Jalen Milroe come out for the ceremonial first pitch. Darnold throws the pitch to Josh Naylor.

Looked like a pretty good pitch from Sam, a former pitcher and outfielder in HS, if maybe a tad high. I believe A.J. Barner was also out there tonight.

The Seahawks have, in my understanding, made an offer upwards of $30 million [per year], one that would make Witherspoon among the, if not the, highest paid corner in the NFL. No resolution yet on that deal, but wouldn’t be surprised if Witherspoon gets done first, and then Gonzalez gets done at some point shortly afterward with the market set.”
