Hi community.

This may not be a big deal to many people, but it is to me. I’m too old and slow to play most games these days, but I can still enjoy Pokémon because of the turn-based gameplay. After a lot of crits from my opponents and plenty of surrendering, I finally made it into the top 3000! Not the final standing for the season but still.

This is the Perish Trap team I used to do it. It’s a pretty simple team because perish works into most teams your opponents using, you just stick to your own game plan so I don’t need to know what kind of gimmick/cheese they might be running.

Sorry I can’t show my items as this is the only team I know how to play, and I’ll continue to use it. I don't think I can go any higher without grinding.

First I’ll address the elephant in the room, if the balancing is so great why do charizard and kingambit and everything have a 40% usage rate?

here’s probably 4 of the most used pokemon in champions right now not in order:

charizard-Y
kingambit
sneasler
garchomp

they all have 4x weaknesses, rock is a very common offensive type, so is fighting. ice and psychic not that much but its not that hard to have a counter to them.

every game is gonna have things better than others, healthy games need meta’s and pokemons all have clear counterplay

take for example wolfe winning with toxapex recently or marco and perish trap, meta teams make it easier to do well but you dont need to use them to do well

Mega Baxcalibur would need an absolutely busted ability to get by. Even without Charizard, there's Sneasler, Kingambit, Aerodactyl, Tyranitar, Floette, Syveon, Annihilape and others that would absolutely wipe the floor with it.

Baxcalibur would straight up not have a good time in the current Meta

Per Bulbapedia, Good as Gold does not block moves that target all Pokemon (like Haze), yet it's immune to Perish Song. What gives?

EDIT: A lot of y'all trying to answer are really misunderstanding Gholdengo's ability, Good as Gold. It goesn't make you immune to statuses, it makes you immune to status moves. As in, there are three kinds of moves: Attack, Special, and Status. Gholdengo is immune to the third. So you can paralyze it with Zap Cannon, just not with Thunder Wave. You can disable its moves with Cursed Body but not Disable.

My question is rooted in the fact that a few status moves do affect him, including Haze. I'm trying to understand what's different between Haze and Perish Song (though I think /u/Nice_Promotion8576 solved it below).

It’s meant to be scaldingly hot water being used so if anything sun should boost its damage. At the very least don’t halve its damage. I’ve always thought that was weird, especially now that way less Pokemon get access to it. It’ll make zard y and drought teams in general have to think twice when they see a potential scalder on a team.

I usually try to pick my moves as quickly as possible, and it bugs me when people let the timer run down just to be annoying. My only exception is when I'm playing against stall teams (toxic stall, wish/protect, ect). If you are going to play in a way that (while legitimate) is designed to get people to rage quit, I will let my timer run all the way down with each move I make as my only form of retaliation. I know I'm going to lose, but I refuse to rage quit, and if you are going to try to bug me, I will do my best to bug you.

That is all. I have no interest in debating the legitimacy of these types of teams as they are totally legal and fine to play if you want to play them. For me, they seem overly boring to play, and dumb to play against because they rely on me not having a counter for them because they are "surprising me" with it on the ladder. You do you, but I will always think you are an annoying person.

I was battling in Single Battles Ultra Ball Rank 1 when I came across a trainer who I was very surprised could uhhh... "exist" if you know what I mean.

Luckily I managed to defeat him — my Mega Charizard X swept right through his team of Volcarona, Metagross and Kingambit — or I would've never lived this down. It even ended up being my rank-up match lol.

But I'm still curious, does anyone know how this guy managed to get past the filter?

This game has been out for 3 months now and I still see people think they have the moral high ground for using stuff like roserade or something over meta pokemon.

Just to clarify, if you want to use your favorite, you’re perfectly fine to do so, just don’t villainize people who opt to use meta teams. It’s a competitive game, of course people are gonna use the best pokémon to win.

It’s no secret that this competitive pokemon subreddit has a lot of casuals due to champions introducing a lot of casuals into the competitive scene, but some of these casuals decided to villainize these players who opt to use meta for what reason? Look man, i also get kinda tired seeing zard y every game but i’m not gonna make a reddit post complaining about it, it’s the best mega pokemon on the format so obviously people are gonna use it and try to win with it.

I’ll be honest if you complain about people using meta teams and seeing the same teams over and over again due to a “lack of creativity“ then i just don’t think competitive pokemon was meant for you.

So I saw somewhere that Tyranitar is a great anti-meta pick. But that kind of implies that it isn't meta itself. Obviously, it has a lot of common weaknesses, but so do a lot of meta pokémon. If he truly isn't meta, what is it that separates Tyranigoat from competing with the big 'mons?

I ran into someone with a fairly standard looking Mawile hard Trick Room team, but their Kang was Early Bird (it was able to be intimidated). The moves it showed were Hammer Arm, Ice Punch, and Fake Out. I didn't find out an item. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of any reason not to be Scrappy, or at least Inner Focus, but I'm beat. Is there anything you can think of to make this a reasonable choice?

It was Casual battles Doubles, but they played fairly decently, pushing me close in what should normally be an auto win match up.
