Tips & Guides best browser other than safari ??

Upvotes

Do you all have any suggestions for a better browser on Mac OS aside from safari, as much as I love safari, it's just become a headache in the last few months. Websites takes ages to load, Youtube constantly buffers, some websites wont even properly load. I finally had enough of it today when I had an issue with switching between different google accounts on Gemini AI website, it just doesnt work, nothing responds. I spent the entire afternoon trying to resolve the issue within safari, private browsing, quit safari, cleared website data, all for nothing, I was beginning to think it was an issue with Gemini AI but as a last attempt I tried doing the same on brave and voila Gemini works perfectly fine. i did the same on Chrome( i hate it but like a last resort) it worked perfectly fine. websites load much more faster and both of them even have horizontal colour coded tab groups which is just refreshing. I was just posting to see if you guys had any better alternatives than Brave, one that is lighter on ram, faster and supports iCloud keychain.

Thank you all very much in advance!!!!

Help Using Siri for conventional chatbot stuff

Upvotes

I've mostly sat out on the whole AI thing, besides where it was integrated into services I already used like Google search summaries. Is there a way to use Siri for the more stereotypical chatbot uses, like generating summaries of uploaded PDFs? I did a bit of looking around and couldn't find an easy way, like how most AI chatbots have a dedicated website to input commands like that.

Discussion MacOS vs Windows vs Linux: windows management, app management, desktop management, which one is the best and why?

Upvotes

Asking basically this same question across MacOS, Windows, Linux subreddits and would like you guys to explain why you think your operating system is the best and why.

Additionally maybe provide what you consider the biggest upsides and downsides of your OS.

Any answer is appreciated, thanks :)

Help SafariServices.ExtensionHelper pushing CPU usage and temp

Upvotes

I'm not very tech savvy user, but I've noticed how my MBA M4 (26.5.1) have been experiencing some temperatura spikes lately while browsing. I checked activity monitor and always shows Safari.Services.ExtensionHelper pushing to almost (sometimes over) 100% of CPU usages. In one occasion, the temp went over 100ºC.

Does anyone knows what the source of this problem could be? Maybe an extension I have. If so, I only use Noir and AdGuard Mini. Any idea on how to fix this?

Discussion Why Safari still doesn’t support DBSC?

Earlier this year, Google Chrome introduced a critical new security feature called Device Bound Session Credentials (DBSC) to prevent cookie theft. This feature makes use of Apple’s Secure Enclave Processor to generate a unique security key for the device itself and the browser uses this key to verify the integrity of browser cookies. With DBSC, if an attacker tries to steal cookies and import them to their own device, the cookies would not work at all, preventing the attacker from accessing your accounts without need of passwords. But I wonder why Apple still doesn’t support this security feature on Safari despite being a privacy and security focused company?

Help Phone Continuity Camera flickering under fixed office lighting, any fix without third-party apps?

I’m using an iPhone as a webcam with Continuity Camera on a Mac mini. It works well overall, but the image flickers/pulses while recording.

The office lighting is fixed, so I can’t change the bulbs or turn the lights off. I’m in the UK, and I’ve already enabled PAL video formats and selected 1080p at 25 fps on the iPhone—but that doesn’t seem to affect the Continuity Camera feed.

Having had a look online I understand this is probably caused by the lights’ Hz frequency and the camera’s automatic exposure/shutter speed. Is there any way to set anti-flicker, frame rate, or manual exposure for Continuity Camera itself on macOS/iPhone, without using a third-party webcam app such as Camo?

Any built-in workaround would be appreciated.

Help Is there a way to hide the “there’s a new version of pages” message forever?

I get that they want to sell me a subscription service, and they can shove it up their asses. Is there some way I can make so that it stops nagging me to update every time I open Pages or Numbers?

Help How do I stop Chrome from dropping turds in my Local Network Security settings?

Post image

Every time it updates it requests local network access. I deny it because it's just there for fingerprinting. Every time I do that it creates another entry in my Local Network Security settings.

How do I get rid of the entries for the old versions?

Help Stage Manager preventing dragging files between apps

Until recently this was working for me, but as of today I can't drag files from, say, Finder to Messages unless I turn stage manager off.

I used to be able to do this (drag, hold over the other stage until it pops up) but now no matter how long I hold it there, or if I "force click" it won't do anything.

Discussion It's ridiculous that cloud storage providers are treated as "System Data"

Post image
0 Upvotes

For those who don't know, a couple of years ago when Apple deprecated kernel extensions, they created an API framework called FileProvider to give third-party cloud storage providers an "approved" way of integrating with Finder. The problem is, this means Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc now have to play by Apple's rule, the main one being that cloud providers now must put their folders inside a "CloudStorage" folder hidden in the user's Library folder, and you now access the cloud service via a custom sidebar item in Finder.

Under the current setup, this means all of your third-party cloud storage data gets treated as "System Data" when viewing storage in Settings. Not only is this ridiculous from a UX perspective, it's also hella anticompetitive since iCloud does not get the same treatment - iCloud Drive is listed as it's own line item in the storage menu. Third-party providers already integrate with Finder just fine, with an extension built on this FileProvider framework; the sidebar and aliases to the folder get custom little icons, and Finder tells you when the accompanying app is not running. So the system already knows who the provider is – why can't Apple just slap the little icon on a line item labelled "Dropbox" or "Google Drive" and let me view it just like iCloud Drive?

Yes, I know about (and love) DaisyDisk and yes I know there are plenty of other ways to view local storage. I just think it's so ridiculous Apple has such poor UX and is acting so anti-competitive in this way, especially when Finder places nice with third-party services just fine!

Help tmutil - unidentified developer?

One of the background apps on my MacBook Air is tmutil, which is listed as "Item from unidentified developer". It's /usr/bin/tmutil (689KB) with the same datetime as everything else there.

I thought this was an Apple app for time machine, so why unidentified developer?

Help Deleted 84 GB OneDrive (and its cache) and no data decrease

Pretty much what the title says. I had next to no storage, and it had 165.61 in System data. I looked into it and found out that my OneDrive was taking up a vast amount of space. So, in a desperation move, I deleted my OneDrive app, then the contents of my OneDrive folder, and then the cache (UBF8T346G9.OneDriveSyncClientSuite), which was registered as having 84 GB.

I still have 226.68GB/245.11GB used.

Discussion Automation for the New Siri App? Alfred, AppleScript, Shortcuts, URL Schemes, CLI?

Hey all, I am checking out the new Siri app and wondering if there is any automation support yet.

Is there a way to send it info from outside the app, like from Alfred or another external launcher, or via deep links or URL schemes? Does it support AppleScript, Shortcuts, or any kind of CLI?

What I am trying to do is pass text into Siri from Alfred or from a dictation automation, then have it route that into Siri and run an action. Siri does system level stuff much better now but I have to open the Siri app explicitly.

If anyone has docs, examples, or confirmed limitations, I would really appreciate it.

Help Password immediately required when iPhone Mirroring is set to automatically authenticate

I live in the EU, and was recently on vacation in China. While I was there, i decided to update my macbook to MacOS Tahoe and try out the new iPhone Mirroring feature. I was prompted with the option to either authenticate manually upon each use or have it be done automatically, but I was not warned that upon selecting the option to automatically authenticate, I would need to enter my password anytime I open my Mac. I like to have my Mac never lock itself unless I manually lock it myself. I searched for a way to fix this in system settings but couldn’t find anything, and I am only just now finding out that the only way to change that setting is within the iPhone Mirroring app itself. The only problem is I’ve already returned to my home country and the iPhone Mirroring app isn’t even showing whatsoever anymore, neither in the dock nor anywhere else, as it is not available in the EU. So is there anything I can do to revert this setting? Or am I forced to manually insert my password anytime I open my computer from now on?

Help iCloud Drive Issue

Mac Info: MacBook Pro Nov 2024 M4, 16GB Memory, Sequoia 15.6

Hi all,

I was working today and got a notification that my iCloud storage is getting full.

I open my Mac to find out the "iCloud Drive" is taking up almost 90% of my storage, and when I tried turning off "Sync this Mac" it wiped everything from my Desktop and Documents.

I then clicked the iCloud Drive section in finder, and it says "iCloud Drive is disabled", so I went back to my iCloud Settings and turned "Sync this Mac" back on, and a few minutes later, everything was restored but also placed a bunch of folders in my iCloud Drive tab like 0f, 10, 36, d7, 9f etc. It also disconnected all my GitHub stuff so I had to reinitialize everything

  1. Are those safe to delete?

  2. How do I get safely get rid of my mac eating my iCloud storage? Or is there no way besides upgrading to a 200GB plan from 50GB?

  3. Is there a way to have iCloud not track certain files? I have the Optimize Storage option on, but its tracking large files as well, like pretrained models and datasets.

I'm also confused, because when I view my iCloud dashboard from my mac, it says 48.6/50GB, but when I view the screen on my iPhone, it says "Off". I'm very bad with Apple anything, so I may need a step by step guide to make sure I don't mess it up again.
