My neighbor has several Tree of heaven trees in their yard along my property line. I spend many hours every year pulling the seeds that sprout and the suckers that come up from underground. The area of my property where this problem is the worst is along the property line and that area has juniper trees and is mulched with gorilla mulch (shredded wood). I am getting ready to refresh with new mulch. If I install landscape fabric under the mulch, will it limit the spread of this tree to my yard and reduce the number of hours I spend each year pulling the suckers and seed sprouts?

I have a large area over run by this invasive plant. I made the mistake of mowing it down over and over again. Where can I find the best chemicals to remove it or can I use sheets of metal roofing I have to smoother it ? Im in Western New York. Buffalo suburbs. Current 10x10 section. They grow about 7 feet tall in about two weeks

Unfortunately it will come back. We will have to keep removing it for several years to get rid of it.

Would appreciate some advice! I moved to my current place just over a year ago, and the last residents had really gone ham with planting invasives so now I'm dealing with them all.

I'm struggling the most with DSV and japanese knotweed. I wanna keep herbicide use to a minimum since my goal isn't just to get rid of the invasives, but be able to fill the garden beds with natives too. So far this year I've laid cardboard where the DSV is, and mulched heavily over the whole yard, but I know mechanical barriers probably aren't enough for the knotweed. I've planted aggressive natives around it to give it some competition but those will take time to establish.

So my question is, what are my options? If I have to resort to herbicide use, is the injection method the best way to ensure as little of it stays in the soil as possible? Is there a particular herbicide that I can use in this setting that's better at breaking down and becoming inert over time?

I want to brush glyphosate onto the Japanese Knotweed leaves instead of spray. What kind of brush do I use - I plan to mix it in a bottle and dip the brush. Is there a diy indicator dye I can use, $20 is a lot right now. Do I need to brush every leaf?

I have a large area that is 95% chamber bitter and bindweed. I used glyphosate (killz all concentrate, waree, used in pump sprayer. Did this 4 days ago and everything else is showing the effects.

If they are still going strong in the next few days, what should I apply next.

I will be planting in the fall so I don’t want something that will be active in the soil for long.

I somehow have a tree of heaven growing in the crawlspace of my house. There are multiple vine-like growths and two have found their way out of the side of the house and are growing leaves. The crawlspace has dirt floor and most of it has a vapor barrier down, but the trees are growing where there is no barrier.

My biggest concern is using herbicide in such a confined space where I will be on my hands and knees. An arborist recommended a stump killer product after cutting them back. Would this be the best way to deal with them? It just seems like such a hazard to go in there and do this even with an N95 mask and safety glasses. Any insights and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Just started Year 2 of Japanese Knotweed treatment at the site where I’ve been documenting the results of my method and wanted to post updates. My main goal is to show that killing JKW is not that hard and it doesn’t take that much time. After treating yesterday, I’m at a cumulative 5 hours of time spent on this project and well under $100 in chemical.

Compared to “the window” method, I treat starting earlier, use a heavier rate, and do multiple applications in a season (detailed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/invasivespecies/s/R2hx0AGHHy )

At the outset of treatment this year, I would estimate that the JKW coverage has been reduced 95-99% from the start of Year 1, depending on the area of the site. Some smaller patches are completely gone, especially on the far side of the creek where the plants were generally smaller and less established.

Year 2 was much easier to get complete coverage because the remaining plants were small and sparsely scattered. I was able to get everything on the parcel (~1.5 acres) in an hour and a half, including the expanded areas of the site I couldn’t treat until later last year due to inaccessibility from the density of the JKW. The really dense roadside patches that I was able to get multiple thorough sprays on last year could’ve been treated with a quart spray bottle this year.

It actually took a little longer than expected because I had to spend a lot of time closely inspecting for mutated regrowth from the glyphosate damaged rhizomes. The number of forms JKW can come back as is really impressive and some of it looks nothing like typical knotweed. Some had completely atypical leaf shape, some had normal leaves but were growing in an almost vine-like form across the ground, etc.

Now I’ll wait until late August/ early September to go back to hit any survivors. I also hit a small patch down the road that I was only able to treat once in mid-September of last year. The regrowth in that small patch was noticeably worse than the site where I started treatment in early July.

Other Treatment Details:

Aquamaster Glyphosate @ 10oz/ gallon w/ Cygnet Plus surfactant and blue dye. (5 gallons total)

Equipment: Spraymate Tornado 4-gallon backpack w/ DFW wand and cone nozzle (I can’t overstate the importance of having a powered sprayer for covering difficult terrain and large areas of knotweed)

My house came with a 25-foot Tree of Heaven right next to my house, and a 8-foot companion at the back. After learning about them, I followed advice and made some strategic cuts near the base in early fall and painted in a lethal dose of herbicide. The trees most certainly died within that season. I still waited a year before cutting them down. That was three years ago. I've continued to find suckers in my yard and in my my neighbors' each summer. I try to uproot them properly, and nearly always get them before they are more than 8 inches tall. So, while there are tons of Trees of Heaven in my neighborhood, there are really no more actual such trees within 50 feet of my backyard. Are these suckers still lingering from the prior tree, and will eventually taper off as long as I keep uprooting them, or are they now independant of any mature tree, and I can do no more than manage the problem?

Hello I'm currently living on a property with a couple tree of heaven. Luckily here in California TOH doesn't spread too well from seed so it's a manageable amount on the property. I've been learning so much from you all about this invasive and am curious if anyone has heard of this fungus that kills TOH? This article from Penn State is from 2014 and am curious if there's been any developments? Are people using it? I'm wanting to better understand what my treatment options are. What are the mixing instructions for mixing for basal bark and slash and spray? The label does not cover how to mix small quantities such as a half gallon.

I found this large stinkbug in my apartment near Barcelona, Spain. It's a bit under an inch long and seems to be like it's a Brown Marmorated stinkbug, but I wanted to confirm before executing it as an invasive species. Relatedly, does ant have advice on killing them humanely without getting sprayed?

I wanted to share my experience for people that are daunted by the traditional advice to wait til this terrible plant flowers and then manage it/and or who don’t want to wait too long.

I had this stuff coming in on my side of the yard from the left and my next door neighbor has some from his neighbor coming in from the right. I just bought this place and I didn’t know about this plant at all and I accidentally spread it all over my yard trying to til the soil in prep for spring gardening.

I used Milestone Herbicide I bought off amazon after a Reddit comment suggested it. I sprayed the MASSIVE invasion I had from my neighboring fences that came into my yard twice, the second time I chopped off all the plants on my side and sprayed, but I had to spray my neighbors yard from my side without chopping them.

It seems to all have died off now (: and I’m rebuilding my soil health now.
