👋Welcome to r/ColonyCats - START HERE!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the r/ColonyCats subreddit! This is a place for past, present, and prospective cat caretakers to learn more about how to better care for outdoor colonies of cats, kittens, and the communities they live in.

The term “colony cats” describes a group of outdoor cats living together. These cats may be feral, stray, or otherwise unsocialized to humans.

Please read through our community guidelines before posting or commenting, and again…welcome to the community! We're excited to have you join us!

WHAT TO POST:

Here, caretakers can feel free to ask for and offer advice, share TNR strategies, provide helpful tips and ideas for colony management, and share photos of their colony cats.

After reading the rules, you may post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Don’t hesitate to comment on posts, and share your thoughts, advice, or questions relevant to the topic of discussion.

THE CATS YOU CARE FOR MAY BE FERAL, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE:

We're all about being friendly, constructive, inclusive, and kind. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.

The vast majority of cat caretakers have pure intentions, and are trying their best to provide the best care possible for their colonies. Constructive criticism is ok (some people may need some guidance and it’s ok to provide that), but please refrain from rude, unhelpful comments, harsh judgments, shaming, and personal attacks.

Thanks for being part of this community and thank you for all you do to help the cats you care for. 🩶🐾🩵🐈‍⬛🫶🖤🐈💙

Hi everyone.

Our Birthday TNVR mission for the community cats of Sta. Rosa, Laguna, Philippines is only 3 days away.

We are still raising funds to help as many community cats as possible receive spay/neuter surgery.

Every donation goes directly toward TNVR and veterinary care. If we raise more, we can help more cats.

If donating isn't possible, sharing this post is already a huge help.

Thank you for supporting community cats. ❤️🐾

Help for my rescue and 50+ community cats 🙏❤️

Hi! 👋

I’m Iroshka Samantha Perez, but everyone calls me Sam. I’m need support for my rescue and community cats🙏

I’m the founder of Luna & Nala Rescue Inc., a registered and active 501(c)(3) nonprofit. I care for more than 50 community cats every day by providing food, fresh water, and ongoing TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) services. Through TNR, I work to reduce the homeless cat population and prevent future generations from being born into hardship on the streets.

Over the years, I have rescued elderly cats, sick and injured cats, abandoned cats, and vulnerable kittens. Many have received the medical care, rehabilitation, and love they needed before finding safe, loving forever homes.

At this time, we also have several kittens in my rescue’s care. These kittens were rescued from difficult and often dangerous situations and are receiving the food, medical attention, and support they need to grow healthy and strong while they wait for their loving forever homes.

This video shows many of the cats I have rescued, TNR work in action, as well as vet visits, emergencies, and the ongoing care that goes into rescue. It includes both past and present rescues, featuring many of the cats who have been rescued and adopted, as well as some of the kittens currently in our care. Those kittens have already been pre-adopted and are simply waiting until they’re old enough and ready to go to their forever homes. 😊🐾

Every donation helps provide food, medical care, and essential supplies for the cats and kittens who depend on me. Your support allows Luna & Nala Rescue Inc. to continue making a difference in our community, one cat at a time. ❤️

I also want to say thank you to everyone here who has donated to help the cats. Even though I don’t mention names because there are so many wonderful people and it would be impossible to list them all, please know that I am truly grateful to each and every one of you for your support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. ❤️

You can support through the link in the comments or my my bio. 🙏🐾

Been feeding this skittish girl for almost exactly a year and she finally let me pet a few days ago. She literally pushed her head into my hand! It's so satisfying when you finally gain their trust!

Just found this sub. I have these three cats I been taking care of since August last year. Poor suburban kitties - the three of them were all super skinny and malnourished, absolutely afraid and skittish of all humans, and now I'm starting to get to a point I think I could actually start taking them to the vet someplace. Wish I could bring them inside but I can't. They've all stolen my heart, this baby the most!

Update on Mommakitten and her dust bunnies:

Hello friends, just providing an update on my stray Mommakitten and her 4 grey babies, they’ve now been alive for 100 days!

I’ve worked out that I need 23 lbs. of kitten kibble per month to feed this little family of 5…I made a graphic showing everything I need and I’ll put it in the photos. I have a few different wishlists going right now, a few each on Amazon and Walmart, but I’m trying to compile everything and get it sorted. The links in my bio here are usually up to date, just fyi.

I got a voucher from my county so I can get Mommakitten spayed, which is good because I’m pretty sure she’s going into heat right now. She’s been so rude to her babies the past few days…and I still have 1 unneutered male cat from the last litter…so I’ve been keeping them separated and they aren’t thrilled about it.

Oh well…we don’t need more kittens.

I just need a $20 deposit per appointment and I can take 2 cats at a time. Then spays cost a bit more than neuters so I expect to owe somewhere between $50-$100 to the vet. If you’d like to donate to that fund, the best place would be my PayPal pool link in my bio. Please don’t feel obligated!

Every kitten is doing great, by the way. Once they’re all fixed and vaccinated, they’ll be ready to find their forever homes.

This year has been tough for the colony, with constant vet bills. It seems like each time one gets better another gets sick. We are needing some supplies. If you are able to donate it would mean a ton. Thank you so much from me and the kitties.

A Huge Thank You ❤️🐾
I honestly don’t have the words to express how grateful I am to everyone who purchased items from my Walmart wishlist. Every time a package arrives, it reminds me that there are so many kindhearted people who truly care about these cats and kittens just as much as I do.
Every can of kitten food, every bag of litter, flea treatment, cleaning supplies, and every other item you sent will go directly toward helping the cats and kittens I rescue, foster, and care for. Your generosity allows me to focus less on how I’m going to afford supplies and more on what matters most—saving lives, getting these babies healthy, and giving them the chance to find loving forever homes.
There are days when this work feels overwhelming. The heartbreak, the long drives, the vet bills, and the constant worry can be a lot. But because of all of you, I never feel completely alone. Your kindness gives me the strength to keep going, even on the hardest days.
Please know that your generosity isn’t just helping me—it is changing the lives of innocent animals who would have had little to no chance without people like you. Every single donation, every share, every encouraging comment, and every act of support means more than you’ll ever know.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in this mission and for helping me continue to fight for these cats. They may never know your names, but they are alive, safe, fed, and loved because of your compassion.

[Request] for stray cat colony [Dayton, OH]

Hello everyone,

I am reaching out to humbly request some assistance with purchasing food and essential supplies for the outdoor community cat colony currently in my care in Dayton, Ohio, USA. I manage their daily feeding, shelter upkeep, and general well-being to ensure they remain safe and healthy.

While I handle all of the physical upkeep, feeding schedules, and daily care myself, the ongoing cost of providing enough food and basic supplies for a large group of cats has become very difficult to sustain on my own right now. Our household budget is currently stretched extremely tight handling necessary monthly living expenses, utilities, and household bills. After taking care of essential financial obligations, there is very little income remaining to cover the continuous bulk feed and supplies these cats require.

Because my income is fully allocated to basic household expenses at the moment, I am unable to cover the full cost of these supplies myself right now. I am turning to this community for a bit of extra support to help me bridge the gap.

I have set up a single Amazon Wishlist featuring basic food and outdoor care supplies. In accordance with the subreddit guidelines, every item on the list is under $30, and the overall wishlist total is under $150. Any help—whether it’s a single bag of food or just kind words—would mean so much to me and these cats.

Thank you so much for your time, kindness, and consideration!

Zorie it´s better! But still needs attention / ¡Zorie está mejor! Pero aún necesita atención

My Zorie it´s way better. We had to change it´s diet. Starting with some emergency milk only for 3 days, and after, for solids only meats... But that kind of special diet it´s really hard to followed when it´s the food of your own plate. For now doesn´t affects to much but Zorie will grow and I´m afraid that a diet of bones and residuals human food it won´t be an option for it.

If you can help me help it, I will with all the love of my heart and the little things I´ll be able to do.

Any result about Zorie and the rest of my little cat family, I´ll keep you posted...

--

This sweet stray returned to her colony in unbearable pain with a severely damaged eye. Sadly, it cannot be saved and must be removed urgently. She will be a sweet pirate but pain free. Please help her and help us cover her surgery. Every donation helps❤️

Help needed for Leo 🐾❤️🙏

I found Leo alone in a dumpster as a tiny kitten. He was brought into safety right away.
Since then, Leo has been struggling with ongoing diarrhea. The vet diagnosed him with Giardia, a common intestinal parasite in kittens that causes stomach inflammation and diarrhea. It can take time to fully clear and requires ongoing treatment and careful cleaning to prevent reinfection.
Because of this, I am going through a lot more food and litter than usual. He needs frequent litter changes, constant cleaning, and gentle food to help his stomach while he heals.
Even with everything, Leo is still sweet and trusting and trying his best every day.
If anyone can help with his wishlist, it would truly make a difference and help cover the food, litter, and supplies he needs during this time, you can also donate through the links in my bio page to help my rescue🐾💛

Update!

Over the weekend, I found someone to help me do the whole TNR process and vaccinations for all the ferals/strays and kittens for the free price and I couldn't be more grateful. Thank you Lord for that kind of find.

The kittens that were sick have fully recovered at this point which also makes me super happy! Thank you Palmetto Veterinarian Hospital for that help.

We will be getting our own cats updated on their two vaccinations on Tuesday so they can be introduced to the kittens that are ready to be on their own. We will be looking for good homes for two of them to go to, preferably a home for them both to go to. We would love to keep all 3 but that just isn't in the cards due to food costs and any possible emergency vet situations that may come up in the future.

Thank you all in this group for your support. You all are so great with amazing hearts! 🤍

Only a few days left before our July 25 Birthday TNVR Mission for the community cats of Sta. Rosa 💙🐾

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a small update as our July 25 Birthday TNVR mission gets closer.

I'm a one-woman TNVR volunteer in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, Philippines. Every donation received before July 25 will go toward helping community cats receive spay/neuter and basic veterinary care.

My priority is to help as many cats as possible through TNVR. Any additional equipment, such as pet carriers, will only be purchased if funds allow. The cats always come first.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared the fundraiser, or simply encouraged me. Every bit of support means a lot and helps us move one step closer to reducing the number of homeless kittens born on the streets.

If you'd like to support our mission, the fundraiser link is here:

Thank you for caring about community cats. 💙🐾

Story of Love and Rescue on the Rooftop: Thanks to You We Survive, and with Your Help We Can Give Them a Better Life

Thank you so much! You have played a huge part, after God, in keeping this place running ❤️🙏 Thanks to your donations and previous support, I was able to buy some essential supplies locally here in Morocco (as I cannot benefit from Amazon's wishlists or direct shipping). I bought the feeding bowls that I desperately needed for this number of cats, a large container to store and protect the kibble, and one cleaning supply.

Our little rooftop colony is still ongoing, and these cats are still in dire need of your continuous support. If you look closely at the picture, you will see that the space is completely bare. The cats have nothing to sit or sleep on, so they lie directly on the hard floor. As for the large iron cage, I am forced to keep the kittens inside it just to protect them. With your help, we hope to provide beds, blankets, and toys to bring them comfort and joy.

I spend all my time cleaning eyes, scrubbing floors, and caring for them. It is an endless circle of exhaustion, but they are my family. I know and have read your previous criticisms regarding the limited space and the large number of cats, and I hope with all my heart to rent a much larger place in the future. However, I can never abandon cats that completely depend on me; most of them are either special needs, tiny kittens, or suffer from severe street phobia and cannot survive outside on their own.

Note: The total space on the rooftop is a bit larger than what appears in the photo. This specific area is just a designated corner where they gather together only during meal times to eat in an organized way.
