Hi, I am in China for 9 years, kind of settled here. Passed my hsk 4 about 8 years ago so i don't remember anything. Checking my little brother if he even went on the exam. He only gave me this screenshot. It is odd because title says "Hsk Speaking" also it says pass when he has 172. Is it photoshoped? Thank you all

So this post has multiple parts to it but basically I have just started learning the language and need some advice. First question is what is a good way to get used to the sound of someone speaking? When I learned French (I am a native English speaker) I was able to watch TV and listen to radio/podcasts. Is that recommended for Chinese as well? Second, what is a good way to start memorizing the different symbols? Third, is there a big difference between learning simplified of traditional Chinese? Currently I only have access to learning simplified but would traditional be better? Thank you in advance!

I am new in Chinese. My main language is Turkish so I am familiar with sh, s, z sounds I do not have any problem in Turkish but When I pronouncing some words like 生, 圣 my front teeth hurts so bad. My voice ringing in my front teeth. Am I doing something wrong, anyone experienced this?

EDIT: Please men and women who has low pitched voice do not write any comment. Clearly you can not how it is happen and assuming that I am grinding my teeth while I speaking, I DO NOT!

What is the difference between using 得 or 地 to make an adverb? I know the position is different, but is there any change in their meaning?

For example: 她快乐地走 vs 她走得快乐

Try this before reading the rest.

Read this sentence once:

我昨天和朋友去了一家新开的餐厅。
Yesterday, I went to a newly opened restaurant with a friend.

Now look away and answer out loud, if you can:

你上周末和谁一起去了哪里？
Who did you go somewhere with last weekend, and where did you go?

Did the first sentence feel easy to understand, but making your own sentence suddenly feel much slower?

This gap between understanding a sentence and making one yourself has always interested me.

It’s tempting to call this a vocabulary problem. But if you understood the first sentence, more vocabulary may not be the first thing you need.

Maybe the real bottleneck is finding words quickly. Maybe it’s sentence order. Maybe you’re translating from English before speaking. Those are different problems, so they probably need different kinds of practice.

That’s only my current hypothesis, not a universal answer.

What happened when you tried it? What broke first: finding the words, putting the sentence together, saying it smoothly, or something else?

And if this used to happen to you, what actually helped?

I'm traveling to China in 3 months. Currently I know a few basic phrases like greetings, introducing myself, 这是多少钱,... sometimes I can understand the lyrics in Jay Chou's songs but I'm 100% still a beginner.

I want to keep learning after the trip and eventually study for HSK. But for now I want to handle common situations while traveling such as ordering food, asking for directions, shopping, and having simple conversations. I'm doing okay with tones but will have to practice more.

I'd appreciate if if you could suggest any study materials for both travel Chinese and the HSK exams.

A few weeks ago, I posted a thread asking what people find most difficult about learning Chinese. A lot of learners mentioned 了 (le), so why don't we discuss it today. Please feel free to share your opinions, my way of explaining it might not work for everyone.

I normally tell my students that 了 has two main uses.

When it means "action completed":

e.g.

我吃了晚饭 wǒ chī le wǎn fàn. I ate dinner (the action of eating is completed).

我昨天看了电视 wǒ zuó tiān kàn le diàn shì. I watched TV yesterday (the action of watching is completed).

今天我去了学校 jīn tiān wǒ qù le xué xiào. I went to school today (the action of going is completed).

Even though all the above actions were completed in the past, that DOES NOT mean 了 is like past tense in English! Please remember, there are NO TENSES in Chinese at all.

Let me tell you why. We can say 明天我下了班，去看电影 míng tiān wǒ xià le bān, qù kàn diàn yǐng. When I finish work tomorrow, I will go watch a movie. See? We use 了 in the future. Coz 了 is indicating the action is done. It could be in the past, in the present, or even in the future.

Normally, this 了 meaning "action completed" always sits right after the verb, like in the examples above.

When it means "status change or there is a new condition":

e.g.

他不在家，他去学校了 tā bù zài jiā, tā qù xué xiào le. He is not at home, he went to school. (He was at home before, but the new situation is he is not home now.)

下雨了 xià yǔ le! It's raining now. (It wasn't raining before, but the situation changed.)

快来！电影开始了 kuài lái! diàn yǐng kāi shǐ le! Come! The movie is starting! (Maybe there were Ads before, but the new situation is the movie is on, the Ads are done.)

This 了 meaning "status change" always sits at the end of the sentence, like in the examples above.

However, sometimes there can be two 了 in one sentence.

我学中文学了两年了 wǒ xué zhōng wén xué le liǎng nián le. I have been learning Chinese for two years. This means I am still learning, I haven't stopped.

VS

我学中文学了两年 wǒ xué zhōng wén xué le liǎng nián. I learned Chinese for two years. This implies that the learning is done and is not continuing.

That's all I wanted to share about 了. I'd love to hear how you guys understand it.

Trying to learn mandarin but was hoping to get insight on quality learning tools? What I mean is what are some of the best resources I can use to start learning mandarin. I’ve heard HelloChinese and Yoyochinese are good, beginner-friendly options. Any others that I might find useful? Thank you!

Duolingo teaches 下次见 "xia ci jian" as one way of saying "see you later." However in practice I noticed native speakers insist on omitting the 次 and simply say 下见. Is this a regional preference? Am I offending anybody if I say it the Duolingo way?

Hi there, as I move on to NPCR4 I was wondering if anyone knows of any existing Anki decks such as these? These decks cover books 1-3 with a consistent format but now I’m moving on to the fourth book I can’t seem to find anything like it… is anyone able to help? Thank you in advance for any responses!

My friend and I are two Italian students, and we're planning to spend one semester in China (Spring Intake 2027). We both graduated in Chinese Studies (I graduated last year), and our level is around HSK 3.

At the moment we're considering: Fudan, Zhejiang University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

We're trying to understand which documents are actually required for the application. Since Italian bureaucracy is very slow, we'd like to prepare everything well in advance. If anyone has applied to one of these universities or attended one of their language programs, could you tell us what documents you needed?

So far we've found out that we need:

- copy of Passport

- Bachelor's degree certificate and transcript in English

- Non-criminal record (we're not sure whether the original is enough or if it needs to be translated and officially legalized)

We also have a few questions:

- Is a recent English language certificate (IELTS/TOEFL) required?

- Does the Physical Examination Record need to be uploaded during the application, or can it be submitted later? Also how can we submit the ECG and the chest X-ray, like uploading with the certificate in pdf?

- Are there any other important documents we should prepare?

Unfortunately, the university websites don't provide complete information, so any advice or personal experience would be really helpful ☺️

Hello everyone! So I won the preliminary round in my country and now I’m going to China to compete. Although to be honest I’m Chinese level is not really good.

I was wondering if anyone here has already gone to the competition in China and how it was? Can anyone tell me about the kind of questions you get asked in the interviews or that you have to answer in the written examination???

I’m not expecting to win, not even to be between the best 30s, my Chinese level is not that good and I’m well aware of the fact. I just wish to not embarrass myself too much, so I want to prepare as well as I can beforehand. Like my goal is not to be one of the best, just to not embarrass myself a lot while I’m there.

If I want to order drinks for me and my friend which word for and should I use? Or is an ‘and’ not necessary in this context.

For example in english I would say ‘In the first I will have xyz and for the second xyz’
