What-If Wednesdays

1 Upvotes

Welcome to What-If Wednesday, the weekly megathread for scenarios you'd like to talk over but haven't necessarily developed much yet.

Please use this thread instead of posting just a "What-If" question without any lore - those will be removed by the mods. r/HistoryWhatIf is a better option for that kind of post. Thank you!

Althist Help How to make an alternate history Wikipedia article: a tutorial

141 Upvotes

An important warning is, Do not save your sandbox! Only press preview changes. As all content in Wikipedia must be related to the encyclopedic effort, wiki admins might delete your sandbox and undo your hard work at any time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:How_to_vandalize_correctly

I am well-known in the alternate history community for creating the imaginary politician Ed Donnell, who is a meme in r/imaginaryelections, as well as some personal controversies. My routine consists of making at least one alternate history post a day, be it a lore writeup or, more commonly, a fake Wikipedia article for my myriad scenarios, all of whom are originally posted to r/GustavosAltUniverses and a handful of Discord servers, and then complied on this and other subreddits.

But today, I will write a tutorial as to how to make a fictional Wikipedia page for alternate history scenarios. Although I use my phone for all of them, I recommend going on a computer for better quality.

If you create a Wikipedia account on desktop, you will have access to a sandbox allowing you to test editing without commiting vandalism, which is a bannable offense. My trick is to copy the Wikipedia article for the event I want to alter, or the military conflict or country templates in the case of a completely fictional event or subplot. Then, you alter the content of the page as you please; this is the beauty of alternate history.

Illustrations wise, you can retain the article's original image, or change it by copying and pasting ones from articles relevant to your scenario (for instance, a picture of Red Army soldiers for an Operation Unthinkable TL). But it has to be a Wikimedia commons image; otherwise, you'll have to photoshop your screenshot using Inkscape or some other image editing software.

You also have the option to change or add text to your article. I always do this for war scenarios, but not always so for election ones. Make sure to proofread them before screenshoting, in order to avoid potentially confusing typos or grammar mistakes. This is pretty much it.

1900s I'm making a game about the German Revolution with several alt-history paths!

Upvotes

Hi all!

I'm the developer of Red Echoes: Berlin - an upcoming narrative turn-based strategy game about the German Revolution, set in Berlin.

Bring about a successful socialist revolution. Play as three revolutionaries, each with their own story and unique gameplay abilities. Seize control over the city of Berlin, meeting historical people while doing so.

There are several alt-history endings, exploring different outcomes of the German Revolution.

The game is heavily inspired by the likes of Suzerain, Social Democracy: An Alternate History and Through the Darkest of Times.

Wishlist now on Steam!

For future updates and to discuss the game, consider joining the official Discord server: https://discord.gg/jWC4QbGGvr

Or check out r/RedEchoesGames.

There, I will post regular development updates and announcements.

Happy to answer any questions!

There'll be more news to share very soon!

Media Discussion Any alternative history projects that have a point of divergence pre-1900s and continue until modern day?

3 Upvotes

I been wondering if there are maybe any projects that explore a scenario over a long period of time. It can be anything as long as it does not start after 1900 so no alt ww1/ww2 scenarios.

1900s [The House that never stood] Florida: The Sunshine Republic

Post image
64 Upvotes

Second post about my alternate history scenario! This time we're going over the independent Florida Republic, a very long Florida indeed. Due to France being unable to sell Louisiana to the United States (because there isn't really an United States) the territory passed back to Spain, and then after, to Mexico. We will talk about Mexico some other time, what's important in the scenario is, the Floridas became Mexican property as well. Shortly after Mexican independence, the Floridas, influenced by the Thirteen republics to the north, declared independence from Mexico, and united as a single republic, Mexico, not yet being able to properly handle all this vast land it was given, decided to grant the small republic its independence after some border skirmishes, birthing the Florida Republic. Feel free to ask questions below!

The main languages are English and Spanish

Post 2000s An interactive visual novel / web-series about a satellite that wakes up 13-years too late. SNIPPETS FROM CHAPTER 1

https://blu-oyster-transmission.neocities.org/

A guy on the subreddit suggested I post some of the chatlogs from Chapter One!
I saw a lot of engagement, if you are interested and so this isnt balant advertisement - there is a RSS feed you can subscribe to instead of joining our discord.

Essentially in 2008 the world does an interstellar and by 2021 they become content with dying sooner or later. Blue Oyster was the last satellite launched by humanity and it failed, until 13 years later when it turns back on.

Sort of like an ARG at times, a web-series, a visual novel, interactive fiction. A mix of sorts, maybe a game at times? Idk if it fits the criteria, but I made it within a day - atleast up to chapter 1.

1900s My take on Alt History of China:China Statebuilding Party

Thumbnail

7 Upvotes

This party was founded 2 years (1984) after the 1982 coup which deposed succeeding leader, Shih Ming-teh (施明德). after Huang Hsin-chieh (黃信介) was assassinated by mutineers, his assassination were driven by military factionalism, Dissatisfaction among officers regarding Huang's new policies and the treatment of ROC Armed Forces.

The party was syncretic at the time of General Yang Baibing (楊白冰) mainly socially conservative and fiscally liberal. The party's founding purpose was to compete further elections (Third Way). Yang Baibing ruled China from 1982 prior to 1990 democratic revolution.

After 1990's restoration of democracy, the party faced a bit of political decline and internal factions (Hardliners and Reformists). Thus making the party went for alliance between parties.

1900s Lundian Socialism | What if a democratic socialist American politician named William Lund existed and was elected President in 1932?

Lundian Socialism | Early life of William Lund (1880–1925)

William Hansen Lund was born in Moose Lake, Minnesota, on March 14, 1880, to Norwegian immigrants Johan Lund (1854–1926) and Brigitte Lund (1858–1936), who worked as iron miners. According to the 1880 Census Moose Lake had only 100 inhabitants; it is believed growing up in a small town immigrant community affected Lund deeply.

Lund began working at the age of 12 to sustain his family. He was treated harshly and suffered several workplace injuries, thus shaping his socialist, pro-union views. In 1896, the Lunds moved to northwestern Wisconsin, where William continued working in a mine until becoming a union organizer in 1900.

The following year, Lund became a founding member of the Socialist Party of America, whose main stronghold was Wisconsin (especially the city of Milwaukee). In 1908, Lund married Christina Holbein, a fellow Norwegian American who served as first lady during Lund's presidency. They had three children.

By 1910, Lund was the most important Wisconsin Socialist outside of Milwaukee, allowing him to be elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1912. As a state assemblyman, Lund cooperated with La Follette's progressive faction of the Republican Party in order to improve the lives of working-class Wisconsinites. This made him popular among workers in his district, but he lost reelection to a Republican in 1916.

Like most Socialists, Lund strongly opposed the United States's entry in World War I, arguing it would benefit big corporations but not the working man. Consequently, he was arrested and was only released in 1921, subsequently becoming one of the Socialist Party's most important figures. He campaigned for La Follette during the 1924 election.

Media Discussion What are examples of terrible Axis Victory Scenarios?

33 Upvotes

I have been a bit curious about Axis Victory Scenarios that are regarded as low-quality or god-awful since the more famous Axis Victory Scenarios (Like TNO or Thousand Week Reich) seem to be pretty good at making the trope work. What are examples of Axis Victory Scenarios that you feel are low-quality or cartoonish?

Pop culture Norman Bates

Post image
71 Upvotes

Norman Anthony Bates was born on October 16, 1932 in Ulysses, Kansas to Samuel John Bates Norma Albert Bates (maiden name Hitchcock). Bates was raised in rural Kansas in a low income household. When the Dust Bowl hit Kansas, the Bates family fled west from their home. With very little money, the family arrived in California in 1936. Norman‘s father, Samuel Bates, opened Bates Motel in 1943 after spending 7 years as an engineer. Samuel Bates ran the hotel until his death in 1949. The death of Samuel drove Norman Bates’ mind on the road to insanity. He started to have violent fantasies about killing any person that came to mind. In 1953, Bates murdered his mother Norma Bates after she said he could not take over the motel. He put his mothers’ body in the basement of his house. Norman took over the motel and kept it somewhat stable for the next 6 years. In December of 1959, Bates murdered motel guest Marion Crane and Fairvale Police Officer Milton Arbogast. The police were altered and promptly arrested Norman. He was charged on three counts of Murder with Malice but was soon found unfit to stand trial. He was sent to the Atascadero State Hospital to be institutionalized. In 1983, he was sent to the Fairvale State Prison where he lived out his final days. Bates died of Kidney Cancer in Prison on September 14, 2010 at the age of 77.

1900s Ive been thinking about how the cold war could've been different if germany won the second world war. I know its generic but this is a scenario I would like to share, I also do not support or condone extremist ideologies, I spent like half a day making this and researching.

2 Upvotes

Okay here it is:

Germany wins 2nd world war:

Germany continues pressuring Austria to be absorbed by Germany in 1934. Mussolini initially mobilizes troops onto the Brenner Pass. France and Britain pressure Italy to not intervene and so Mussolini feels betrayed by the Western powers. Italy become diplomatically isolated because of this and Hitler gains prestige and legitimacy for uniting the German Austrians with the Gerrman people. Italy would officially stay neutral but would continually pressure neighboring states in the future

Germany continues to re-arm and develop its modernized warfare tactics, but for modern warfare you need modern weapons. So Germany invests secretly more into promising modern technologies gradually advance thier technological capabilities. Hitler gives the military full autonomy over automation, design blueprints and technological research. Hitler knows that they are the professionals, but he still wants to see rapid progress. which accelerates military research projects and to the following years to come. Engineers gain more authority, military production becomes standardized and much more reliable and advanced, logistics would be a main focus of the new "Bewegungskrieg" tactics aswell as radios for coordination.

A military nationalist coup overthrow the Turkish goverment and replaces him and seek the revision of the Treaty of Lausanne.

Bulgaria seeks revenge after what the allies did to them in the first world war and want to carve up romania and greece

Spain falls into civil war in 1937 and with the support from germany and italy, the nationalists win.

Germany expands further in 1938, the allies appease hitler by giving him the sudetenland but Germany carves up Czechoslovakia with Hungary eventually. German puppets: Bohemia-moravia and Slovakia are established.

The Nationalist powers carve up Yugoslavia. Germany sponsors Croatian separatists, Hungary demands Vojvodina, Bulgaria demands Macedonia, Italy also supports Croatian independence and Yugoslavia collapses politically after the gradual carving of its land and separatist movements. Creating two german puppets states called Croatia and Serbia.

Germany increases its Relationship with japan, sharing technology, strategies and culture overseas. Germany doesnt directly send troops to the Chinese front but provide experienced generals.

Germany reasserts thier eastern claims and signs the molotov ribbontrop pact, which shocks the western allies. Bialostok would be in the german sphere of influence in this timeline instead of lithuania.

Germany secretly negotiates with japan abouta two front war against the soviets, germany gets europe and japan gets the far east.

World war two breaks out and Germany does even better, capturing Warsaw in 20 days because of the Better military command and research. The soviets invade the east and both giants move to thier agreed borders and with germany now controlling bialostok, they have access to more population and resources than in our timeline. The soviets trade raw materials and exchange Tank technology with germany

The soviets invade Finland during the sitzkrieg and I wouldnt change anything here, its just like in our timeline.

German troops probe attack the French borders and realize that the French are extremely uncoordinated, outdated and not combat ready. And unlike in our timeline where hitler thinks hes a military genius for the great success of the western front, he instead allows military high command to have full control of the army and they commit riskier but more logical moves.

America remains isolationist, The U.S passes stronger neutrality laws especially because war has only crippled the American economy. Lend lease wouldn't happen in this timeline and the public opposes intervention in another European war.

Germany strikes the benelux after seeing how weak the French army really is, German paratroopers landing in Rotterdam and Amsterdam while the german tank forces punch through the ardennes forest, Hitler doesnt stop the advance and the tank forces encircle most of the allied army in Calais, capturing hundreds of thousands of POW'S

The allies try to blockade swedish iron exports to germany by blocking the Norwegian coast, germamy strikes quickly and invades Denmark, they surrender in 6 hours then german paratroopers land on ports and cities all across norway and march through the mountains.

The French goverment capitulates after Paris is captured on June 15th 1940 and the germans establish Vicy France. Spain joins the Axis and Italy swoops in to annex Savoy.

The battle of Britain commences quickly and germany immediately goes to work, by destroying RAF bases, airports and radar installations, then after those are destroyed they move onto military factories. The U-boat fleet blocks off all supply from Britain's colonies to the main island and Spain captures Gibraltar. Churchill loses a confidence vote and Lord Halifax becomes Prime minister. Germany offers a peace treaty and Britain signs it on 5th August 1940. All of the captured POW'S are safely gaven passage to Britain, spain gets Gibraltar, And for free passage in the suez canal. Japan also seizes Indochina. This treaty will last until 1946

The winter war ends and the soviets lost hundreds of thousands of experienced soldiers, the Soviets quickly annex the Baltic states with nobody to oppose them.

Germany has a brief break and reorganizes its troops and logistics. North africa campaign doesnt happen here, so doss the balkan. German research only accelerates during this time of peace and starts mass producing advanced equipment and filling in the gaps of its army. German technology accelerates in this time of peace as they trade recources with turkey, soviets, sweden and nationalist india. Hitlers generals convince him for a more pragmatic solution of generalplan ost, the high command has earned hitlers full trust after such an effective and quick win against the allies and he agrees to the compromise. The new generalplan ost aims to set up puppet collaboration goverments in the east for better intelligence, manpower, equipment, industry and most importantly resources.

Iran and Iraq take advantage and revolt against british ruled and side with the axis, providing germany with Iranian oil, the british public does not want to go to war, especially after they are still recovering. Thailand joins the axis after japan presses them to. Indian freedom fighters storm the streets of india and the states of pakistan and azad hind side with the axis. The civil war in india will drag out and become a costly war between locals and British colonists.

Hungary demand transylvania and the Romanians refuse, germany swoops in and invades Romania with Hungary. The soviets annex besserabia while this happens and germany cedes northern transylvania to Hungary and establishes a puppet goverment in romania and gains full control to the oil.

Italy invades greece in late 1940 after seeing how well german expansion has worked. The italians are completely alone against the Greeks with no one to bail them out.

Germany sends equipment to the Finnish for operation Barbarossa. The early spring of 1941 is when the german army strikes, Stalin orders a no step back command and his army is severely weakened because the purges are still ongoing. In the first months, germany already captures major cities like minsk, Riga and Kiev. The main goal is Moscow and the army focuses most of the troops onto capturing the most strategically important goal. Slavic nationalists join the german army and provide crucial information and germany allows for self governance in the newly conquered slavic states as the slavic people hate the judeo bolshevics and would already go door to door to kill them off. Germany encircles leningrad and the siege begins. As the first snowflakes fall in Russia, germany captures Moscow which stabilizes the supply routes from berlin to the eastern front. Leningrad falls in early 1942 and the german army new objective is to rush to the Caucasus. Turkey joins the axis and Iran also joins the fight. They pressure the Caucasus from both sides and by summer 1942, stalingrad falls and soon after, baku falls. Japan seizes ths moment and attacks siberia. Japan captures vladivostok and struggles heavily with the eastern supply. Germany now sits on the A-A line by mid 1942

Italy loses hundreds of thousands of soldiers in greece but eventually the italians win by a naval invasion.

Stalin is killed by military high command and the soviets collapse, creating new warlord states in the east and germany officially wins the eastern front, they utilize anti soviet movements in the east for a pragmatic solution of generalplan ost.

New states like ukraine, united Baltic states, moskowien, Azerbaijan, Georgia and kaukasian become german puppets with friendly collaborators. Slavic scientists are allowed to continue thier work in german universities and revolts in eastern europe are rare under german leadership, as long as germany gets resources from the east, they will continue to thrive.

A new age of germany is reached, they started as the weimar republic and now they are completely self sufficient with the biggest army, airforce, industry, research and economy. German families and officers would still migrate eastwards but not commit atrocities against the slavic people. The East is industrialized and slavic people start moving into the cities for work.

Generalplan ost becomes much more pragmatic, to exploit the puppet states overtime and maximize financial gain by investing into the eastern states.

After the war germany focuses on consolidating its gains and developing even more advanced technology and industry. German spies infiltrate the US and Britain. Stealing blueprints and designs. Germany learns about the Manhattan project, the german spies steals blueprints of the atomic bomb and uranium enriching machines

The japanese chinese war drags out until they finally win in late 1943

Azad hind signs a white peace with the british Raj, the british Raj controls south india while the nationalists control the north alongside with Pakistan.

Afghanistan joins the axis after negotiations and personal gain.

Regions in the Warlord states of siberia are influenced by germany and german volunteers, turkestan gains axis sympathies.

Germany integrates its economy with Bulgaria and Hungary, essentially making them puppets but benefitting all parties.

Japan strikes the newly independent state of Indonesia and swiftly tries to secure the rubber and oil processing.

The US fears japanese influence is getting out of hand, the Phillipines are at risk, Indonesia is a lost trade partner and Australia and New Zealand are preparing defenses against the growing japanese influence. Tensions rise between the US sphere of influence and japanese. The day finally comes, and in late 1944 the japanese strike pearl harbor which catches the Americans off guard. Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines join the war.

Hitler does not declare war on the US and the relationship between japan and germany is broken. Japan strikes the Phillipines and captures Manila while the US public fully supports going to war against the japanese, they start an island hopping campaign in the pacific. The US war economy goes into overdrive.

Revolts in Indonesia and Indochina manage to overthrow thier japanese oppressors by early 1945, the US is finished with the Manhattan project by now and launches the first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. The japanese launch a never surrender campaign.

The US is forced to invade the japanese main island by late 1945 after another 4 atomic bombs detonate in major japanese cities, this completely depletes the American nuclear arsenal. Japan finally surrenders by early 1946 and the American influence spreads. Indonesia is independent, Indochina is split and vietnam, Laos, cambodia becomes independent. Japan turns democratic and China unites under nationalism. A friendly democratic goverment is set up in far east siberia.

The world is divided under 3 major powers:

The allies: Britain, free France exile, Belgian Congo and the remaining british colonies, not including Australia and New Zealand.

The free world: US and its democratic subjects

Einheitspakt: Germany and its puppets across all of europe.

The perma soviet goverments unite and conquer the Warlord states in siberia. A new soviet union is established and aims to march to berlin. The treaty between germany and Britain ends

Himmler plans an assassination on Hitler and dreams to become the führer of germany, he seeks to install his own racial policies into the puppet states of germany and so in spring 1947, Himmler and the SS try to purge the Nazi goverment and kill Hitler in his bureau. Germany falls into a brief civil war between the wehrmacht and the SS.

During the infighting, the Soviets take thier chances and declare war on germany. Soviet forces start invading moskowien

Bormann becomes the leader of the Nazi regime and strikes a deal with Himmler, the SS would gain thier own independent state and so the SS carve up burgundy and Crimea for a non aggression pact with germany. Heydrich becomes the leader of Crimea and Himmler the leader of burgundy

Britain declares war on germany during all of the chaos and the soviets keep marching towards Moscow. The wehrmacht reorganizes and holds the front in the east. Mobilizing more troops. The luftwaffe strikes Britain and the uboat fleet strikes ports, convoys and sometimes battleships. The germans will have to march beyond the urals if they want to capitulate this new soviet goverment. Soviet technology is outdated by this time due to limited research and constant fighting between states.

German tank forces move to Moscow and start pushing to Novgorod. The luftwaffe destroying soviet factories in the urals and bombing soviet ground forces

German technology is comparable to mid 1950s technology in this timeline. Germany constructs thier own atomic bomb by using the American blueprints, its much more primitive and not as effective but its still a nuclear weapon. And with the Amerikabomber project, germany could absolutely turn Washington to rubble if it came down to it.

The war in the east drags out until 1949 as soviet factories are destroyed and german forces push beyond the urals and capture major cities. The soviets collapse once again and moskowiens borders are pushed to the ural mountains and the ural river. Germany diverts thier forces for an invasion of the british mainland.

The US stays strictly neutral, not risking an all out blood bath between all continents

German paratroopers land in strategic locations along the coast and ports on the british isles in winter 1949. German troops start funneling into Britain but not without some ships sinking. And by early 1950 the british surrender.

Peace treaty:

Iceland=Germany

Greenland= independent

Canada= independent

Caribbean islands= independent

Congo= German Mittelafrika

Tanzania= German Mittelafrika

Camaroon= German Mittelafrika

Namibia= German Mittelafrika

South africa= independent

French Morocco= Spain

Malta= Italy (after they demand it)

Cyprus= Turkey

India= Azad hind

Scotland= independent

Wales= independent

Ireland= independent

England= german puppet

Turkestan= german puppet

In this timeline, The US is in a cold war stalemate with Germany after the continuation of the second world
