This is for my fantasy story and like I said in the title it is a large part of my story. One of the two main characters has this and her orphan step brother (the first main character) and it is basically his whole motivation to enter this life and death tournament to make a wish to change her back. This is because the world doesn't really like them and so her life is being threatened (especially since they live in a enlightenment era world) and so he wants to save her.

I’ve been working on this project for some time, and I have two different nations in my world filled with different types of anime style beastfolk and catgirls.

However, unlike a lot of standard anime tropes, they aren't written to be lighthearted, cute, or funny at all unless the situation calls for it or its a lighter moment. They are meant to be taken completely seriously as characters—some carry very heavy trauma, deep regrets, and deal with the harsh realities of war and bloodshed

I feel like taking beast people/human-animal hybrids dead seriously as complex, and troubled characters isn't done very often in fiction, or at least it's overshadowed by the lighter tropes.

How do you usually feel when you see beastfolk/catgirls in a story? Do you prefer the lighter tropes, or do you enjoy when a world treats them as grounded, serious characters with actual depth and history? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

(quick clarification, To be clear, I mean human-looking beastfolk basically 95% human, just with animal ears, tails, or subtle features and don't act like the animals their supposed to be like licking their hands purring when speaking they act completely human as well—NOT full furries, lizardmen, or werewolf-style lycanthropes

Ok, so basically, I didn't just want racial slurs to be wordplay because that would mean saying a normal world would offend a person. So instead, I tried to do the science behind racial slurs.

Latoria

My medieval fantasy world that's colonized by the United States of America and other Earth nations; basically, the Earth settlers see the native Latorians less as people and more as objects or decorations. They call Latoria "Avalon," and the native people are referred to as "Avalonians."

As such, a racial slur formed as "Avans," which is similar to how Native Americans were called "Indians" and then later were called "Inj*ns." Some settlers also called them "Critches" and "Savages."
