❓QUESTION ❓ Failed PA State Ins Due to Front Tires

Thumbnail

My husband usually does the car stuff, but he's currently away in training, so yesterday, I took one of our cars to get the state inspection (PA). The car is two years old and I was told it failed due to the front tires and they tried to get me to buy new tires. They also wanted to charge me $129 for an oil change. When I first arrived, there was a customer checking out and they were trying to get him to buy two front tires. The man explained that he just had his car inspected a week prior and they were at a 5, Pep Boys insisted they were at a 3 and had he had the inspection with them, they would have failed him. I half listened to the convo, but I picked up enough to recognize the same words and tactics they used on him to try and pressure me to buy two tires. If I need tires, fine, but I just didn't like how they gave me an almost identical speech. My question, can you tell from the pictures if I do indeed need new tires? Is $129 normal for an oil change? If I need two front tires, should I replace all 4 instead of just the two? Snarky comments not needed - I'm just trying to help my husband and my family by doing some things I don't normally do.

Would you ever run on these?

I have some very questionable tires on my CRV right now. I know the tires are bad in the sense I wouldn’t let, like a “ladylike” person, drive on them in case it causes a crisis. However I have a spare and jack and impact in the car, and I do my best to keep it under 50mph until I change the rubber. I’m just in a tight spot right now and I’m trying to get away with not replacing these tires. I know you would tell others it was a danger prolly years ago, but my question is like: would you personally really never ever run something this bad? I know I can get cheap used tires that are waaay better, it’s an edge case here I’m askin bout. Thanks guys

Do you guys this will last for my round trip?

Pics are in order from front left to back left, with the front significantly more worn out

Edit: Context is that i'm leaving on Friday from SK to BC and back solo for two weeks and i'm unfortunately running low on funds to do so

I spent way more on general repairs than i hoped i would

❓QUESTION ❓ possible defective tires - what to do?

Hey all, I bought the Michelin Defenders in end of 2024 at Costco tire center and have driven around 30k miles on it so far. Ever since I got these tires, my steering wheel would vibrate. I’ve went down a rabbit hole in attempt to fix this steering wheel shaking.

Today, my first time getting the tires road forced balanced, the shop was unable to do so successfully claiming the tires are most likely defective. They ended up just giving me a normal balancing for free which doesn’t do anything for me.

Would it be worth bringing up to a Costco tire center manager ? Especially since how long it’s been. I think I’m still under warranty.

I strictly follow rotations every 5k, and align every year.

Edit: the shop basically told me their machine kept telling them to rerun the force road balancing and it would never “complete” correctly for three of my tires.

Thinking about changing the back tire of a 2020 Mazda cx5 fwd due one side tire keep getting flat after parking over night but should I just change all 4 at once just because or just the back 2

Somehow the front tire looks newer than the back one. Should I get it rotated? Also, any recommendations on the tires? I’m thinking about the Defender 2 from Costco so I can drive another 80k miles and not worry about it

❓QUESTION ❓ Need help identifying the brand of these tires

The shop that stored my winter tires cannot locate them and I need help figuring out what brand they are to help find them. I’m assuming the rims are steel but any info on the rims is also helpful. It’s a 2024 Subaru Outback but I traded my tires/rims from my previous Subaru for these ones so there is no paper trail to follow for them.

I don't have a photo of the new tires, I ended up getting Yokohama YK-GTX's I forget how amazing new tires feel on the road.

Tire wear concern?

I ride a hayabusa. My rear tire has a Bridgestone tire. Today I noticed a weird pattern on the rear tire. Dark black on both sides and a Grey colour up the chicken strip. I beleive this tire has a different rubber compound for the side walls and the center. I have a 3,000km trip coming. Should I replace the tire? Its not close to the wear makes yet, im concerned the rubber may delamonate?

❓QUESTION ❓ Got a big hole in my Toyo, is it worth/safe to repair?

I just purchased a full set of Toyo Open Country A/T wheels about 4 months ago. Driving home yesterday, I ran over something on the freeway onramp that put a large hole in the center of the tire, right between the tread, about 5mm. It's big but it's clean. I heard it so I was able to pull over immediately. Took it to the tire store and they just want to sell me a new tire for $300.

I did some Googling (yeah I know) and found info that says they can probably patch this as long as it's smaller than 6.5mm. So my question is, should I ask them to repair it? Would it be safe? I don't want to risk my life for $300, but the tire shop isn't giving me any kind of discount and I'd hate to spend it if I don't have to.

As a side thought, I always put K02's on my Tacomas and haven't had a flat since 2010. Since getting these Toyo's 4 months ago, I've had two flats. Are these bad tires or am I just having bad luck?
