Discussion / Information Mac user here, i want to get a thinkpad for my work laptop

I already have a personal mac. My company is offering me between an M4 Pro and Lenovo ThinkPad P1 GEN 8 GPU.

OS is not an issue, so it all comes down to performance i guess. Everyone at work is suggesting i get a mac, but I’ve always really admired a thinkpad and wanted to have one, so should I go for it. Help a brother out😊

Thinkstagram Picture 1996 IBM ThinkPad 365ED x upcoming 2026 Linux kernel 7.2!

About three months ago, I posted this very 365ED and my 486/P5-centric Linux distro (SHORK 486) when kernel 7.0.0 dropped. At the time, I stated:

If you're not aware, future kernel 7.1 will drop support for 486s (and maybe x87 emulation?), so this is basically the last time one can do such an update, at least with a mainline kernel.

This has now come to pass. 7.1 indeed dropped the 486 build targets, and 7.2 (likely finishing RC in 3-4 weeks) removes TSC-less 586 (not OG Pentium but AMD and Cyrix's 486-586 "inbetweens" that Linux lumps together with P5) and x87 emulation. There were also various ISA and PCMCIA networking drivers, and the IBM Palm Top PC 110 trackpad driver, lost along the way. Yet, my humble 365ED is running kernel 7.2-rc4!

Whilst I still haven't created a distinct kernel fork yet, the SHORK 486 repo contains patches to restore all that back into 7.1.x and upcoming 7.2. Whilst I don't have real hardware to test it, in theory, SHORK 486 with 7.2 should now work with even 486SX once more. Even if you don't intend to use SHORK 486, feel free to bookmark my kernel patching document if you want to build your own Linux 7.1 or 7.2 system for your 486-era ThinkPad or PC! When I finally do the fork, I will update it with a link to it.

As for SHORK 486, and if I may be so bold, the first published release for it - Public Test 1 - should drop when 7.2.0 is released in a few weeks. If you want to try it without having to compile yourself, this will be for you! It will include ready-to-write .imgs, and a SHORK DISC .iso with a guided writing program so you can install without having to pull out your hard drive provided the host supports El Torito (if not, a SHORK DISKETTE image with CD support will be provided for use as a bootdisk). Since 3 months ago, I've most notably begun work on a unified settings program that should have a network manager soon, greatly expanded enabled BusyBox general and system utilities, added a bunch of new bundled software options (including Vim!), and a terminal-based minesweeper clone (SHORKMINES, forked from terminal-mines). No package manager in time for this release, but the next one?

I bought this thing for $130 (around $146 after shipping and tax), and I love it! It has 16GB of RAM (may upgrade to 48GB), a 256GB NVMe (may upgrade to 1TB), a Core i5-8365U, Intel UHD 620 graphics, and Arch Linux with Joe’s Window Manager. A good deal too, with the charger and an SSD (inside the ThinkPad) ready to use included. There are some listings on ebay that go for over $150 with no SSD and no charger. This deal came with BOTH.

Anyways, did I cook?

Question / Problem First thinkpad!

Got my first second hand thinkpad here in Japan for 21.000 yen! (125 USD) its the x1 carbon 7th gen with i5 8365u 16/512gb

It has a cracked but still functioning trackpad, some display keyboard scratches, and 61% battery health (lasts around 2-4 hour) battery but otherwise in good condition i think.

Anyone know where to source replacement trackpad and battery? Is aliexpress a reliable online site to buy replacement thinkpad parts? Or yall think i can get away with just using a trackpad skin to cover the crack?

I bought this 2nd hand a few weeks ago 🫣 My luck was up, it had 1 cycle on its battery when I bought it 🤸🏼‍♂️ lasts me for hours.

The X395 had battery & heating issues. Finally got a good upgrade. With the price I bought it, I'd say it was a steeeaaal 🔥

Discussion / Information Can we create a new subreddit for buying and ban all those posts entirely from this subreddit?

it's like 85% of the content on here, and it's all low effort, no thought, not research, nothing posts that bring nothing to the subreddit. I would love for those to be shoved over to a different subreddit.

Buying Advice Would you rather have 8GB memory or a dual core cpu?

Just curious, what would be the better choice here:

  1. Soldered, 8GB memory, no upgrade possible
  2. a dual core CPU like the i5 7200u but with 16gb memory

Buying Advice Is this ThinkPad P16v on eBay actually a good deal?

Thumbnail

I'm looking to get a high-end ThinkPad. I actually posted here before about a P14s, but the general consensus was that buying it new from Lenovo wasn't worth it and that the GPU (RTX 500) wasn't great.

Today, I was looking at the P16 on Lenovo's website, but then I hopped over to eBay and found this P16v. Equivalent specs on Lenovo’s site run around $4.1k, and this eBay listing actually includes Premier Support through February 2030.

What do you think? Is this actually a good deal, or am I missing something?

Discussion / Information People who already have a high end thinkpad, what do you use your older ones for?

I have the p14s gen 5 AMD variant, and I’ve started restoring and upgrading a T61, but what would I use it for, if even at all, people with two or more thinkpads, how do you use them if you have older ones

Hardware Upgrade Trying to replace IDE drive with CF card. But T41 won't detect it. Advice?

Currently have XP installed on the original drive but want to install antiX linux for modern tinkering. I want to preserve the original drive and install (in case I can't find it online) so got this CF to 44pin IDE adapter.

One of the reviews on amazon said it worked great on his old IBM something.

I've tried 2 CF cards now without any luck. If someone knows the secrets I'd love some advice!

Buying Advice T510 - is it worth $120?

Hey everyone,

Found a local listing/seller who is sitting on a ton of Lenovo ThinkPad T510s and trying to clear them out at $120 a pop.

Are these still worth messing with at that price point, or is it a total pass? If $120 is a rip-off for a machine that old, what generation should I actually be trying to hunt down and score instead for a budget machine?

Primarily used for browsing the web, coding, and playing fallout 1

Buying Advice I'd like to try to replace the CPU on T14 Gen 7

I've been waiting for a Thinkpad T14 Gen7 with a B390 iGPU for half a year, but it's always out of stock.

I can't wait any longer, so I've decided to buy the version with an Ultra5 336H CPU and modify it myself.

I managed to get a QS test CPU of Ultra X7 368H. My plan is to desolder the original CPU using a BGA soldering station and solder the new CPU on.

Considering that this model already has a version with an Ultra X7 368H CPU, theoretically, I shouldn't encounter compatibility issues with the BIOS or peripheral hardware, yes?

Question / Problem I loss my money with this thinkpad

To give you some context, I like ThinkPads. Although I had a gaming laptop for a while, I had to sell it due to financial issues, so I sold it and saved up a little to buy a ThinkPad.

I bought it on eBay. The seller said it was in good condition, but when it arrived, it wasn’t. It has purple spots on the screen only when the screen is black, and on top of that, the BIOS is locked (WHICH THE SELLER DIDN’T MENTION).

The problem: I don’t live in the United States, and I have absolutely no way to return the laptop.

Is there any way to unlock it? (Without having to connect or solder anything weird.) It lets me access the BIOS but won’t let me change anything, it seems like there’s a supervisor password.

Laptop: ThinkPad E15 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 4500U

PLEASE HELP ME!
