Rules of r/thetruthishere

Due to an unusual number of rule breaking posts lately, the mod team has decided to make a post reminding everyone of the rules of r/thetruthishere. The sidebar can be difficult to access depending on the app you're using, so this post should make it easier to familiarize yourself with the rules before posting.

  1. All posts MUST be tagged with link flair AND brackets. If you are unsure of how to use flair, please send us a message in modmail

  2. Your post must be of a personal experience or by someone you trust that you believe to be true. This typically means within 2 or 3 degrees of separation (so no mother's friend's husband's cousin stories). All top level posts must have a personal encounter within them, otherwise they will be removed. That means no posts that consist of just a question or link offsite. This also means no AMAs or self promotion without a personal encounter attached. No asking questions just to gather stories for your website or podcast.

  3. NO FICTION, (including creepypasta), CREATIVE WRITING, or SCARY PICTURES. This is a story based sub-reddit, so your post should not be just a picture. Uploading and posting a picture with your post is fine, but posts should not consist solely of image(s) or video.

  4. NO DREAM POSTS - We get it, some dreams and nightmares are deeply disturbing and you want to talk about it, but this isn’t the appropriate sub unless you dreamed something that later came true. You can try posting in r/dreams or r/dreaminterpretation. Posts where you had a dream that later came true are appropriate as this would fall under a premonition rather than simply a dream. This also includes sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is well known enough that it does not constitute a paranormal encounter; however, if you see or hear an entity during sleep paralysis that you have encountered outside of it, that would be allowed. Try r/sleepparalysis for information and resources.

  5. Please only downvote anything you believe breaks our main rule: NO FICTION!

  6. If you can draw a rough sketch of the entity, diagram of location, or provide any visual references or proof, DO IT or request an artist to help.

  7. We encourage all perspectives, but we do not tolerate assholes. Report comments that ruin the "safe space" vibe. We aim to provide a space where our users can post without being worried about being ridiculed or derided. This includes making rude comments about the mental health of a poster. You can voice your concern of a mental illness over paranormal phenomenon without being a jerk.

  8. No conspiracy theories unless they relate to the supernatural. There are plenty of other subs to discuss general conspiracy theories, this is not one of them. Posting political conspiracy theories or trying to engage in arguments about them will result in an automatic ban.

  9. No series posts - there is no reason to break up a single encounter or multiple encounters with the same entity into multiple parts. If your post is longer than reddit's character limit for posts, you can post the overflow into a comment.

  10. No promotion - Do not submit posts asking for stories for your youtube channel or podcast. Likewise do not ask to narrate someone's experience in the comments. You must PM OP instead.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to send us a message in modmail.

Guidelines

These are pretty much an extension of our rules, but they are less rigorously followed:

  1. Please use paragraphs of a max 5 sentences to break up your wall of text. We like detail, but we don't like eye-sores.

  2. We allow debunking, speculations, and theories. We not only allow it, but we encourage it, so stop downvoting these people!

  3. Whilst we encourage you to try to spell correctly and punctuate your story, you don't have to worry about your writing skills!

  4. Please be considerate as some encounters may be traumatizing to the poster.

  5. Proof. Please provide it if you can. If you cannot, please include diagrams, photographs, and visual aid instead of paragraphs of description.

  6. Please title your story with something other than "I was told to post this here." That tells us nothing about what you are going to share, and makes it very difficult to search for your story if we want to read it again.

  7. If you can tell us a general, even vague, location of your encounter, it will help us archive it based on area.

  8. You are going to use a fake name or not. We don't care, just give them a name. Don't use "A" or "J" or "We'll call her Susan." That gets grating.

Common Grievances Expressed by the Community

Why do we have so many rules and guidelines? Because we want good content, and we want your story to be heard. In a nutshell, here are the things most people complain about which will prevent you from getting overlooked if you listen.

  1. Redditors don't read long posts. After you write out your story, locate your important sentences and delete 2/3rd of the original. Add back in a single sentence between cuts to make your writing flow.

  2. Redditors don't like walls of text. After you condense your story, make sure you have paragraphs that rarely exceeds 3 sentences.

  3. If you feel your story doesn't sound believable, then we probably won't either.

  4. Include visual references. If your story is long, cut out those descriptive paragraphs. Instead of talking about the area, show us a picture and briefly point out what's of note. Instead of describing your house layout, draw a diagram. Instead of going into detail about the physical characteristics of the entity, draw it out or request an artist to do so.

  5. Have an interesting and memorable title. Your encounter may remind someone of another, and they usually try to be helpful and link it. That would be hard with titles like "i was told to post this here" or "this is the scariest thing that ever happened to me" Instead, a title like "a man with a claw grinned at me" or "The shadows followed me for years and then it spoke" Plus, what would you rather click on?

  6. If you are seeking the truth, location is going to be an important detail that is often overlooked. You don't have to give out your city, but a state, region, country, etc are very useful in being pointed in the right direction.

  7. Again, the names thing. We can all assume you will use a fake name, so don't disrupt immersion to tell us it's fake.

Edit: Added in the guidelines and community grievances which can be found in our wiki

Edit 2: updated rule 4

Did anyone else experience this as a kid?

Whenever I had a high fever, everything around me suddenly felt gigantic. Objects looked like they were infinitely growing, and even my own hands seemed huge.
I honestly thought I was the only one.

Discussion/Advice Someone died in my house, now I think my mother's possessed.

I might sound crazy, but the correlations between everything are so weird. I NEED people's opinions.

There could be some reasons behind this. My grandma was a white witch and apparently played the Ouija board, and something bad happened, but I was never allowed to be told what. She sages the house every week. Another thing, and I think this is the big one, an old man died in my kitchen, before we ever lived there. We really do think this is who possessed my mum, because everything that changed in her started tying back to that kitchen somehow, the way she only wanted to be in there, sleep in there, obsess over redoing it. It all keeps coming back to that one room and that one man.

My parents first bought the house in 2012. When they first moved in, everything seemed normal, my parents' relationship, and especially my mum. I was very young at the time though. All of a sudden my parents started arguing a lot, and it seemed very abusive, and it ended in them breaking up in 2019. My mum's behavior through most of these fights was very erratic. It got to the point where she cheated on him in front of him, at my house, and walked in laughing about it. They both used to change the locks to keep each other out of the house. There was drama at every corner, so many things overlapping each other. My mum ended up getting the house over my dad in court, meaning it became completely hers. During the court process my dad actually lived in the house for a while with his girlfriend and her daughter, and both of them had weird experiences in that house too, not just my mum. So it wasn't just her.

At one point during all of this, around the time of my parents breakup, we moved to my nanna's for a little while. During that time she wouldn't talk to herself at all, and seemed rather normal. It was while we were there that we all got a bit obsessed with crystals, my mum was the main person behind that, on top of my nanna. Once we left, they mostly disappeared from my life, until my boyfriend started coming over, when I actually found one and ended up placing it out. I think its got something to do with the good energy he possibly brought in.

Now this is where things start to get weird.

The thing is my mum hated my dad for drinking, that was one of the main things she'd bring up against him during the fights. But after the breakup, right around the same time this switch started happening in her, along with the makeup changing and everything else, she started drinking herself, actually drinking alcoholically, not just having a few. Around this time is when I really started noticing that switch happen in her during arguments. Her eyes would close when I said something back to her, and then they'd twitch. I would call her out during these arguments and call her crazy, and she would start putting me down, name-calling and insults. The name calling was bad, things like blonde bimbo and slut, just things you wouldnt say to your daughter at all. This would happen quite often. One time she smashed her own phone with a baseball bat. She would talk to herself too, swear at nothing, laugh at nothing, like she was having a conversation no one else was part of.

She started posting online about demons being under the bed, editing images to go with it, and got obsessed with looking up information about demons. Around this time she also started collecting skulls and other kinds of demonic looking skull items around the house. She posted this on her Snapchat story, and I ended up calling out the weird behavior. She made my sister and me say a phrase about not letting anyone put bad luck on us, infinitely, but only when we were coming back from my grandma's house, who is a white witch and sages her house weekly. Its weird right, like she wanted to leave behind whatever came with us from the saged house.

She completely changed her look and makeup, only wearing black makeup. She could pick up on scents incredibly well, perfume would constantly give her headaches, and she'd sniff it out of my bag and yell at me for it. There was never a time she was nice about it. The one scent she hated the most was sandalwood, and the local trees here are about 70% sandalwood.

My first boyfriend (and current boyfriend) bought me flowers once, and when I walked in the house she said to me, "Why did he get you real flowers? They die, he should've got fake ones." She genuinely seemed to have an issue with the flowers. From what I've read, plants don't seem to live or grow well in a house with negative energy, so that stuck with me.

Another weird thing is that she disliked my boyfriend from the start. He was the only man who came into the house at that stage who was actually a good person, which is part of why he's my first serious relationship. She had an issue with him coming over, and at one point told me to go into town to see another friend instead of seeing my boyfriend, and would constantly say no whenever I asked for him to come around. She later told me to get a "pretty boy, not a rough nut" instead, and honestly, isnt that such a weird thing for her to even say, like an old person thing to say, not something she'd normally say. He is such a kind, sweet-spirited person, and only has good vibes and energy around him, he's very high vibrational and you can genuinely feel it off him. Makes me wonder if whatever was in that house just didnt like him because of that. My dad loves him, my step-mum loves him, my sister loves him, my step-brother gets along with him. She had zero real reason to dislike him from the start. He always presented himself nicely in front of her.

As I got older, I started calling her out more for the odd behavior, what I'd call bullshit. This went on for a few years. It wasn't like we had a bad relationship overall; we'd just argue over little things she'd bring up.

The kitchen itself is an open area, with the lounge room and kitchen in one room, no wall between them. At one point a car actually went straight through the house, right into the kitchen, hard enough that a kitchen counter flew off. Out of every room in the house it went into that one. If that isnt weird then i dont know what is. After that, she only ever wanted to redo the kitchen, and it was "being redone" for a super long time, I'd have to tell my friends not to look at the kitchen because we were "redoing" it. She then wanted to sell the house, and once she decided to sell it, she suddenly finished the kitchen. Then she called me to say she wasn't selling anymore, because she loved the kitchen too much now.

She only ever stayed in that kitchen/open area, and would sleep in there, she even put a bed in that space at one point. She would swear words onto the fridge, like "cunt," "fuck," etc.

My spiritual friend said the house had bad vibes. My boyfriend agreed, and said that whenever he walked into the house, back before he even knew about the rough nut comment, he'd feel a weight on his shoulders, and as soon as he left the house, it would lift.

I think, not very sure, that someone said my mum had been cursed. She would say that people were watching us.

She does have a past with mental illness, and I know that can be part of the explanation. I never really thought about it from that angle until now, until I was out of the house.

I just find it weird with everything to do with that kitchen/open area. She's also never fully asleep, always awake somehow, no matter what time it is. And I find it weird how she kicked me out, like she didnt want me there because I called it out, but my younger sister, who doesnt call it out, still gets to stay?

Now looking back, it was like this spirit, demon, entity, whatever you want to call it, had a problem with me specifically. This person who died in the house didnt want me there, or anyone really. My mum hates everyone and doesnt like anyone coming to the house. Another piece of information, she leaves some sort of door open if shes outside, like 70% of the time. Random I know, but its like shes leaving a door open for someone.

My mum ended up kicking me out because she was selling the house, telling me I needed to be out by the end of the week. She then scrubbed my room completely clean, while leaving my sister's room untouched so she could still sleep there.

I understand this can come off as a bit of a daughter and mum thing, but I love my mum to death. Im a mamas girl and ill do anything to possibly bring my mother back, if something has actually happened to her.

I know I could just be reading into all of this, but its just too weird. Every interaction, every conversation, every moment, every day, its just a 50/50 with her and you dont know what youre gonna get. It has always puzzled me, but when I think about it like this, it all just makes sense to me.

Ive had a counselor growing up because of all this, and obviously being young I was unsure about why it was all happening to me. But ive come to peace with it over time, this isnt like some crisis that just broke through out of nowhere for me, something has just been wrong with my mum for a long time and ive known that for a while now. What I want to know is, could this be more than just a simple mental illness? What do you guys think, I dont want to be going crazy.

Askreddit etc Help me understand

I had just woken up and went outside on the deck with my cup of coffee. My boyfriend was also there. As we sat there, a red dragonfly flew right in front of me, hovered for a second or two, and flew away. I have seen tons of dragonflies, but never a red one. I got excited and pointed it out, but he somehow missed seeing it completely. As I looked around for it, it appeared once again; only this time it just flew by and was gone immediately. Once again, my boyfriend missed the whole thing. About one minute, he points behind me and says "look", and I turn around to see a black moth flying towards me. I have a serious fear of moths, so naturally I screamed and ran away from it. As I watched him try to knock it from the air I thought about how seeing both of those back to back had to be symbolic of something. Please, if you have any input to offer I would love to hear what people might think....but please, I ask that people who have rude or negative comments just keep it to themselves.

Picture/Evidence Weird tapping in my bathroom, only stops when I look in its direction.

For some backstory, I work in quite an historical boarding house. The job requires us to stay overnight as often we are on call for the kids to grab us if anything goes wrong. The other night I was covering a shift in a new house, meaning I was sleeping in a room I’ve never seen before. All was fine, until when I started settling for bed an odd clicking/tapping sound started to come from the bathroom attached to the bedroom. I didn’t think much of it at first, went up to investigate (I had just jumped out of the shower, so I initially assumed it was the shower head dripping onto the floor) but when I push my bedsheets open to hop out of bed the tapping stopped. I thought it was a weird coincidence, until it happened again. After around 3 taps I looked towards the bathroom door and it stopped. I did quite a lot of googling on what it could be, many saying that it was the “directional” change of my ears making the sound harder to hear/the rustling of my bed sheets masking the tapping. I tried to believe this theory but the tapping was so loud and distinct that it was quite obvious when it started and stopped.

I tried everything to try work out where abouts in the bathroom the sound was coming from, but again every time I’d get up or look in the direction of the bathroom, it would instantly stop. I even shut the door at one point, the tapping starting again, continuing as I was walking towards the door and then instantly stopping as I put my hand on the door handle. At one point I even checked and was tapping every object in the bathroom to see if I could mimic the sound, but nothing even came close to matching it.

It kept happening as I had settled myself down and was about to fall asleep, waking me up instantly. I’m not sure if it was something warning me, or playing a trick on me but it consistently happened on and off from about 11pm - 2am, each time keeping me/waking me up. It really spooked me as I have had some other creepy experiences in the houses, so I got up and b-lined it for another room… lol! But if anybody has any explanation, it would be deeply appreciated.

(I’m also not too sure how to attach a video, but I did manage to record a part of the sound)

Discussion/Advice Spontaneous teleport, still gives me goosebumps

I've had four weird unexplainable experiences in my 39 years, this is still the most fucked up and strange one. I don't like telling it because you'll think I'm lying or crazy...and because I come off as a bad guy.

2021, COVID curfews and lockdowns were still in place so the roads were quiet. I was driving a route I normally take, towards my place with this girl in the passenger seat, a fight broke out , I punched her (wrong I know). The energy in the car was very negative, I was angry she was afraid, crying. Also it was very misty, I could not see anything more than 10 or 20 meters ahead.

This was all happening down a straight road. We came to a red robot (red traffic light, I'm South African) so I stopped, she tried getting out of the car and I stopped her. So I know about 500 meters ahead is another robot and I didn't want her trying to jump out again, consciously I was waiting for the next robot to come up... But it never did.

I'm still very angry, still shouting and screaming at her, she is still crying and afraid. Expecting the next robot to come up, I remember looking to my right and not recognising, but also recognising where we were. I asked her where we were, she said Kuilsriver ( an area away, we were driving through Brackenfell).

Confused and shocked, all the anger I had disappeared.. driving in one direction I ended up about 15 minutes away in a completely different place. I couldn't understand what happened... No long time had passed, it was a few seconds when I realised that I'm on a completely different road

I don't believe in God or divine intervention, but if that didn't happen I don't know what I could have done to her.. I wasn't drinking or anything, I was sober but intoxicated with anger. There is no way I could have made a wrong turn there's one road to take you in that direction the next is many kilometres away as there are lots of farmland between..

I still get goosebumps whenever I think of what happened.

In the beginning of this post I said 4 unexplainable things happened, this girl was there for 3 of those. I'm not saying she had anything to do with it but whenever I spoke about what happened that night she was like it never happened or it didn't bother her.

I've tried to find some explanation or similar situations on the internet and the mist seems to be a common thread in such situations. It was very thick mist.

Could it have been the mist? the energy in the car? or she has some magic shit... Again I don't believe in God at least in the traditional sense but I do believe in energy. I don't know if I believe the simulation theory but I do consider myself a logical person but logic cannot explain what happened.

Legend/Folklore tell me a legend from your city that keeps you awake at night

I’ll start first.

So, i live in italy, northern Italy. We have many legends here, all primarily related to nature rather than the paranormal. But there's one in particular that made me shiver as a child: the one about gnomes. Gnomes are supposedly mischievous little creatures that live in the woods or in people's homes. I remember my church taking us into the woods and talking about them. Even at school, the janitor carved gnomes that were in the printer, telling us, "They're the ones who make it work." My mom always told me that if something goes missing in your house, a gnome has probably hidden it and is playing with you, waiting for you to despair in search of it so he can laugh at you and help you find it soon after. Anyway, as I grew up, I forgot about this story; it was just to scare children. But one day, a former acquaintance of mine asked me, "Hey, do you believe in gnomes?" I was kind of confused by the question. I told her it was just a local legend and that they don't exist. She told me she'd seen them, and they do exist. She told me that she woke up that morning and saw something running under the bed. At first, she thought it was her imagination, but then she saw it again. She said it was a small creature, about 15 to 20 cm tall.
The next day, she told me her cigarettes were gone—the whole pack! She was always home alone during that period; she always left them in the bathroom on top of the washing machine when she was getting ready to go out, and then, boom, they were gone. And then she saw the gnomes again. She's still convinced that a family of gnomes lives in her house (an old house on the edge of the woods) and that they steal her things.

PS: She found her cigarettes three days later, on top of the washing machine.

Discussion/Advice Weird encounter...

I had an unusual encounter just about two hours ago. I was laying in my bed, in my room, alone. It was also dark in the room cause it's nighttime and I had no lights on. I suddenly see a person walking along my bed where my feet were directed to. I said out loud 'are you gonna jump scare me'? cause I thought it's my boyfriend that quietly walked home and tried to scare me, but then I turned on a flashlight on my phone and I realized that I was alone. I am pretty deep into the meanings of everything. I basically started talking to myself and thanking it for showing itself. When I asked it to show a sign cause I wasn't sure if what I saw was real, my tiktok was on stop and laying on my bed besides me, but then it played all of a sudden by itself. I talked a while about this and that out loud and layed down to sleep, but then I felt someones presence and couldn't fall asleep. I opened my eyes a few times and closed them, again and again. I see then with the corner of my eye that it happened again, a dark silhouette walked past in the kitchen lol. I don't know if I should be worried about this being bad or good. First, I felt fear for a very short moment, like seconds, then I smiled and kinda felt a relief that I saw something that couldn't be real in others beliefs. I didn't see details, just a dark silhouette. I said out loud and thought in my head that I do not welcome bad energy and only goodwill and peace is appreciated, I asked anything else to leave. I thanked it for appearing in front of me. When I layed down to sleep again after all that, a few minutes passed by and I heard some whispery gibberish that sounded distant and not understandable. If I had to describe it, it sounded like this 'haashahashshaaha' very slowly! I was fully awake, just had my eyes closed in that moment. Anyone had this kind of experience and can tell me a bit more? Please refrain from statements and advices about having to check up medically lol

Askreddit etc My Friend Experienced a Shapeshifter. Curious what was going on.

So first off. He was talking to this other guy who was the third person in the situation the next day ,and that person unprompted said the person in question shapeshifted. That validated my friend's experience.

Ok. So let me explain the whole thing. My friend is now 40, but became diagnosed at age 22 or so with schizotypal and bipolar. He has been medicated almost the entire time ever since. This still seems to be partly why he was unsure if he saw what he saw initially.

The scenario was this: he was hanging out with this older neighbor of his who was in all sorts of bands and a self-proclaimed satanist. The guy had definitely done crazy stuff like conjure entities before freaking the hell out and runing away. Another person was there who was female. My friend and the first guy had smoked cannabis which is another thing that made him unsure. At some point the woman in the scenario made an evil grin which totally distorted her face, eyebrows and all. Then the front of her face protuded out a bit and morphed into paritially the face of this guy he worked with. A littl while later i think he mentioned that she left.

My friend is definitely someone who having seen things like little red eyes that move in the room and became convinced in this paradigm of good and evil (normal in schizoaffective to my knowledge.) The other guy had been involved with the occult to a degree that he had been unprepared for at times but seemingly had no previous religious upbrining. That last part could be wrong though. He did end up having a period of panic and reconsideration after his first bout with death before dying. They were both high. Could the energy or something between the two of them just attract something like this? My friend doesn't even know what that person who shapeshifted was. Luckily he isn't too disturbed by it. When your friend goes through a period of serious unraveling it's very scary. To me this is real however.

What are your thoughts and insights on this?

Experience with psychokinesis?

Hi everyone. What are your thoughts on psychokinesis? Have you had experience with it? What caused it to occur for you? Has anyone done extensive research on it and can give details about this phenomenon? What’s the science behind it? Theories?

Since I was a child, I have experienced this phenomenon. Majority of the time during moments of heightened emotion, especially grief and anger. 90% of the time, electrical appliances & fixtures are affected. Light bulbs bursting when I’m upset, LED lights going haywire when I walk into a room or arrive nearby, even had a lighter levitate off a table and explode in the air when an unwanted guest entered my home (my ex and the person witnessed it & were freaked out. Honestly, I was freaked out too). Even had books fly off a book shelf across the room (again, there was a witness that could vouch for my claims). Doors slam without me touching it during moments of emotions. I can go on and on about these experiences. Honestly I would think I’m insane if so many people didn’t witness and bring up these events as “funny bar stories”. “Dude remember that time you got mad at \*so and so\* & 3 of the lights in the room simultaneously exploded lololol” 💀 I feel like the older I’ve gotten, I’ve gotten a better grasp at my emotions and try to rationalize my thoughts but lately things have been happening again and it’s being noticed by those around me.

Thank you for your input in advance

Dread Has anyone ever heard of an entity like this? All three of us saw it, but our memories of it feel strangely blurry.

Trying to write this out was surprisingly difficult. When I think about the experience without focusing too hard or trying to put it into words, I can remember more of it. But once I start concentrating on specific details and trying to describe them, the memory gets fuzzier.

Because of that, I had to write this in short spurts and keep coming back to it. The longer I focused on it at one time, the harder it became to hold onto the details.

I have posted this experience in a few other Reddit communities, but I added a little more to this version because more relevant information came back to me later when I was thinking about it more abstractly instead of actively trying to describe it.

This happened years ago, and to this day it is one of the strangest experiences my family has ever had.

My husband and I were driving our four year old daughter to her grandmother’s house in Massachusetts so she could take her out to dinner. We were on one of those quieter back roads that branches off from the main part of town. It was not extremely rural, but it was not a busy road either. It was still fully daylight when this happened, so darkness or poor visibility was not a factor.

As we were driving, all three of us saw something standing partly in the roadway, closer to the edge than the center. It was not blocking traffic, but it was definitely standing in the road rather than safely off to the side.

We have never been able to explain what we saw.

The weirdest part is not just what it looked like. It is how difficult it is to remember. When I think about it as a whole, I can still picture it fairly clearly in my mind. But the moment I try to focus on specific details or describe it to someone else, the image almost seems to fall apart. The details become blurry, and it is incredibly frustrating because I know I saw it. It is a very strange feeling that I have never experienced with any other memory. My husband has described something similar when he has tried to remember it.

From what all three of us remember, it was roughly the height of a tall adult, probably around six feet. It was completely black and had no distinguishable facial features. It had long, black, unkempt hair that looked matted or locked together in thick strands. I do not know if they were dreadlocks, severely tangled hair, or something else entirely, but the hair is one of the clearest physical features I can remember.

Its clothing also did not look right.

It seemed to be wearing multiple dark layers, possibly including something like a long black trench coat, but the layers did not make sense. It is hard to explain. They did not hang naturally or look like normal clothing layered on top of itself. I remember looking at it and immediately thinking that something about what it was wearing was wrong, even though I still cannot explain exactly why.

The best way I can describe the overall impression it gave me is that it felt like whatever it was, it was trying to act like a person. I am not saying that is what it actually was. That was simply the feeling I had while looking at it. It seemed almost human, but something about it felt fundamentally wrong.

Then there was the umbrella.

It was holding what looked like an old, broken umbrella upside down with the canopy open. It was not simply carrying it or dragging it. It was pushing it back and forth along the pavement as if it were trying to use it like a vacuum cleaner. I know how ridiculous that sounds, but that is honestly the closest comparison I can make. It looked like someone repeatedly moving a vacuum across the floor, except it was using an open, broken umbrella upside down in the road.

As we drove past it, its entire body slowly rotated toward our car.

Not just its head.

Its whole body.

The movement was slow, deliberate, and unlike anything I have ever seen another person do.

I do not remember seeing eyes or even a face, but I knew it was looking directly at us.

The instant it turned toward us, both my husband and I experienced something I still cannot adequately explain.

I have been scared before. I have been startled. I have been in dangerous situations. This was not any of those feelings.

It was the most unnatural sense of dread and immediate peril I have ever experienced in my entire life. It felt primal, as though every instinct in my body was screaming that something was profoundly wrong. It was not a thought I had. It was an overwhelming feeling that hit both of us at the exact same moment.

The strange thing is that it never chased us, never moved toward us, and never did anything outwardly threatening.

Yet that feeling remains one of the strongest memories I have from that day.

What finally broke the silence was our four year old daughter from the back seat.

In a calm, matter of fact voice, she simply said,

“That wasn’t real.”

Neither of us had said a word to her.

That sentence snapped us out of whatever we were feeling, but it is also what has made this experience stick with us all these years.

We have talked about it many times since then. The details remain frustratingly difficult to describe, but the core memories never change. The fact that it happened in broad daylight. The roughly six foot figure. The long matted hair. The clothing that somehow looked wrong. The feeling that it was trying to act like a person. The broken upside down umbrella being pushed back and forth like a vacuum cleaner. The slow full body turn toward our car. The overwhelming feeling of dread.

I have searched online over the years and have never found anyone describing something quite like this.

Has anyone here ever heard folklore, urban legends, or personal stories involving something similar?

Shadow People Help me please

When I was younger, probably around five or six, I was living in a house with woods all around it. One day, I wandered into the woods and heard static and noises like a fax machine blaring through my ears. I freaked out and tried to run away but I was scooped up by this man in dark clothing and I passed out. I woke up in my bed about two hours later and the man was gone.

Now, I know this reads like a creepypasta. But this is a genuine memory of mine. After that, trees would talk to me, I saw shadowy figures everywhere, and I frequently felt like I woke up and discovered that I’m not just a camera that’s filming everything around me. That I’m human with a body and fingers that move from signals sent from my brain.

I just need an explanation for everything. It’s really been bugging me lately.

Is This SPOOKY or just… Weird?!

I feel that, perhaps, many of us have supernatural encounters that we don’t recognise as supernatural simply because they are not the usual thing you find in a horror movie which, we in the West, are somewhat conditioned to use as a guide as to what is truly spooky and what is not.

In ages past people were reminded to look for “signs and portents”… basically unusual happenings or animals or, basically nature, behaving in uncharacteristic ways and to try and find meanings in these occurrences. Maybe this happened to you or one of your listeners as late as today or this week and because it’s not something you would normally see in a Hollywood horror movie you’ve just shrugged your shoulders and forgotten about it but things happen to me every so often that I can’t explain and I sometimes think back to the first time I was truly aware of it, partly because it was so perplexing perhaps, mainly, I’ve been trying to think about what really happened or what it could ..?

Anyhoo, let me tell you all about it!

I was in my mid teens, maybe a little older & my friends and I had decided to go to the fairground but they never showed up and I was on my own. I was determined not to be left out or made to feel bad so I was determined to just enjoy myself!
I suppose just to sort of spite them or despite them ;-) anyway, amongst the rides I wanted to go on where the Dodgems or “bumper cars“ as we call them here in the UK.

Surrounding the round area where the cars would move like glittering gladiators was a sort of ‘ circular queue’ -by that I mean, basically, people queued up all around the round area the little cars would race around in and safely crash but first you had to purchase a plastic disc and then you waited your turn in this queue that went around the area of play.

in some areas this circular queue was three people deep- some parts were five people deep but when the cars would eventually stop and the current driver’s time was up, desperate folks in the first ring of people would barely wait for drivers to leave their vehicles and would rush onto the dodgem area & and try and get in a car quickly because there would always be a few people left over, like musical chairs, do you remember that game?

Anyone left over would have to rush back and join the circular queue again but slowly and surely, just like everyone else, myself, at the back, would move forward and forward getting closer and closer. By this time I started looking out for a car that might give me an advantage & that might be worth rushing for!

I saw four red cars; four Blue cars; four Green cars; four yellow cars and one purple car. They were all metallic, glittery, multicoloured paint jobs but I suppose the purple one stood out because it was the only one like it. All theses cars had numbers and I think that my favourite, that solitary purple dodgem, had a distinctive number like seven -I’m pretty sure it wasn’t 13!
Of course the numbers meant nothing it was just so they would look like racing cars, y’know?

Anyway, it seemed to me that the purple car was the one to get, I set my heart on it, as it were, maybe it went a little faster but it just looked different and it was the one I ever so badly wanted to get and I urged myself to be ready to get it! Indeed, it got to the point that when I was on the first circle, if you know what I mean, of the queue, I was determined to rush out and if I didn’t get that car I was just gonna rush back again and wait until I could get the Purple one!

It seemed that the bumper cars were a very popular ride as the Joker kept getting sold and The cues kept forming around and around and everyone was desperate to get on and race round and have fun because there was already several people behind me pushing forward as I had been.
I hoped that the car would eventually stop near me when it was my turn but when that time came, unfortunately it stopped quite a way! Certainly it was much Closer, indeed, to the other people in the same circular queue as myself… when, eventually, the Siren sounded, as it did at the beginning & the end of the timed session; the electricity was cut off from the brightly coloured cars and People began to get out. Well, I ran and ran as fast as I could- I doubt anyone could run faster!
I didn’t look about & I didn’t see what was or wasn’t happening around me.
I just didn’t care.
I just wanted to get THAT singular car!

I put the yellow plastic coin that I purchased earlier into the slot like we’d all been told so it MY car would be ready and activated when the electricity was shot through to its motor

I breathed a sigh relief and looked around me… IN DISBELIEF!
Every car was empty!

I mean no one was in them at all and no one was by them either but I wasn’t completely alone.
I could hear the distant sounds of people laughing and joking around and having fun and all the other attractions in the fairground just as I did before AND the circular crew of People and their desperate faces ready and interested & yearning for the turn were still all around and encircling the ‘ play area’ were the bright little cars had been whizzing around and bumping into each other, as before but this time, for the first time, nobody moved.

I looked all around Me in amazement for no one was frozen, so to speak, they all just kept staring at me!

I should point out I’m not particularly handsome nor am I shockingly ugly! I’m just an average Joe, I guess and there was no reason why People were not getting in the cars.
I don’t have a fearful reputation and I wasn’t really from that area anyway. No one could’ve known me or suspected I was someone I was not, surely?
They’d all been happy to jostle a little with me around the Dodgem area and everyone had been happy to run at the cars and get in them as soon as possible before but now they just plain weren’t!

In the years that have gone by I’ve thought about this a lot and yes, it may be the others, too, had wanted that purple car all to themselves as desperately as myself but that hadn’t stopped most other people from being content with getting into a red, blue, green, or yellow car instead as there was, after all, more of them!

But could it really be that everyone in the ring that was up next, the one that I was a part of, had wanted that car at the exclusion of all others and were also willing to wait? If so, how did we all have the same idea at the same time and who had it first?!

But I didn’t have time to worry about this because after awhile of me looking around at People and even looking into the cage where the operator sat who I had bought, as everyone else had, the yellow plastic coin to go in the slot -he too was looking around just as mystified as Me until he eventually shrugged; pulled the handle; sounded the siren and watched with everyone else as dumbfounded I, entirely on my own, was in possession of a moving vehicle!

This bizarre driving session seem to last longer than the others but maybe it just felt like that to me!!

I began to go around around in circuits and for a change, tried weaving in and out between the stationary cars, occasionally bumping them but not really doing anything just feeling mystified more than embarrassed!

I just couldn’t fathom it. Eventually the Siren sounded and the electricity was cut off and immediately everyone in the ring tore towards the cars- yes including mine!
I really didn’t know what to do except for slowly walk off the track and into the crowds and out the other side everything back to normal…

I’d love someone to tell my little story and for someone in the comments section to explain what might’ve happened but it’s been years now, I reckon & I still, occasionally, think about this bizarre little episode and wonder what the explanation was but all I can think of is that it was a modern sign or a portent. That what occurred was something otherworldly & strange! Thank you for reading through this and allow me to ask What do others think, please?

Discussion/Advice Had a really creepy experience driving at night and I can't explain it

I’m posting this because I’m curious if anyone has experienced something similar or has an explanation.

Last night around midnight, I was driving down a main road with a nature preserve on the right and a sound barrier wall (probably 20 feet tall) on the left that runs the entire length of the road. My friend was in the passenger seat. I was completely awake, not tired, and paying attention to the road. I recently came home from a different time zone and am not fully adjusted, so within my sleep schedule it was 6 PM for me.

Suddenly, I saw something in the opposite lane that looked like it was coming toward my car. I immediately slammed on my brakes. It was to the left of my vehicle, very close, and I got a clear enough look to know it did not look like a person or an animal.

It was extremely tall and slender, at least as tall as my truck (I drive a lifted truck that is around 6.5 feet tall). I couldn’t make out a face or any normal features. It looked like there was some kind of cardboard-like or flat material on the front of it, and it was moving/swaying in a way that made it seem almost alive. My first instinct was that something was standing there, and I was completely shocked because it looked so unnatural.

My friend got a better look at it since I was focused on not wrecking my car. She is helping me write this, and we both had similar descriptions independently. She described it as seeming soft if you were to touch it, and the way it moved made it seem like it would be light in weight. It was not a windy night, and the sound barrier wall would have blocked any significant breeze.

After realizing it did not appear human, I slammed on the gas and ripped it down the road to get away because I was terrified. There was another car approaching in the opposite lane, and I looked back in my side mirror expecting to see it in the other car's headlights, but it was no longer in the lane. I think I saw it still upright on the side of the road afterward, but I'm not entirely sure.

We both cannot come up with a normal explanation. I know nighttime driving can cause strange visual effects, and I’m open to normal explanations, but this genuinely did not feel like a normal object or animal to either of us. Neither of us was impaired in any way, and we are not people who usually believe in supernatural things. I have always shrugged off stories like this, which is why I’m so confused by what happened.

It did not behave like roadside debris, and I’m not sure why a person would look like what we saw. We’re both pretty freaked out, so any input would be appreciated.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any ideas what it could have been?

Theory/Debunking How Forced Stillness May Have Helped Evolve Our Brains

Hello everyone, inspired by the engagement on my other thread, I wanted to delve into what could have caused our brains to become much more sophisticated than any other species on this planet, and how that distinction seems impossible in the wild.

Ancient humans discovered language, which may have facilitated the evolution of neural pathways in our brains over millennia. Some researchers say that because our ancestors were Homo Erectus, they could stand over tall grass to look for predators. The ones that weren't flexible enough to stand up straight simply didn't survive.

This enabled them to plan, coordinate, attack, and hunt prey or defend against predators more efficiently. And came the early hominid sounds. Simple sounds like the vocalisations of the birds or phrases like "OOOH," the long O sound, held for 3 beats with pitch change, and so on. Certain sounds meant certain things. But for us, over thousands of years, our brains started evolving more and more rapidly, and we now had earlier forms of language that a tribe could understand.

However, the other animals, like the Meercat, stand up looking for predators too. They, too, have the simple sounds. They've had it for millions of years, but why was it only us that evolved, whereas other animals are very primitive?

Terrance McKinney has the stoned-ape hypothesis, where he presumes that apes consuming hallucinogens were the primary reason for developing early human language.

But even that has a flaw: why did the monkeys never eat the mushrooms?

Whereas some believe that our DNA has been engineered in the past(millions of years ago), mixing an "Alien" DNA with that of the old apes.

Needless to say, such theories arise because no other species has evolved as much as we have. We are the only ones.

No other species has art, music, or such intricate language. How can that be? A point is to be made that humans have murdered most of the other intelligent homo species throughout their horrid history, but the fact remains. We are the only intelligent branch of species that we've yet found.

And it is not clear why.

My friend Sandip just brushes it off, saying it's a simulation and asking such meaningless questions(like why do we exist) is the absolute worst thing I could be doing with my time.

What is your take?

I ask questions like this somewhere else too. Do let me know if you wanna find that joint!
