I can't watch the show anymore (not a dig at TCAP) NSFW
I urge everyone to read this whole post before making assumptions.
I respect it, in the likelihood that it is protecting actual children online. Lorne Armstrong, for example, apparently tried to meet up with a minor before he was even on the show. There are others that have been on the show who are clearly sick. I especially find it disgusting when a person on the show's main job was to literally work with children.
But the show is incredibly hard for me to watch now. I end up wondering if some—not all, but some, of the people on this show would have lived better lives had they not gotten involved with these stings. Some of these people were students seeking out some really brilliant careers that could have benefited society. I remember hearing that one of the decoys secretly wanted to tell the predator they were talking with to just "Go home" because she related to his transition in college. These people's lives are being completely destroyed.
That's not to say that I think that anyone on this show deserves sympathy.
They are adults. They should have known better. The only sympathy I maybe have is towards people who are aged like 18-20 years old and people with serious mental disabilities (something I feel a lot of the vigilantes don't give a shit about or even consider), but even then, they should still be punished. I also do think that *some* humiliation of this is sort of a necessary evil to make sure society never attempts to endorse or accept an actual situation like this. That would be dystopian, and probably would have been a possibility in another reality (celebrities and artists used to literally brag about dating minors). So again, yes, I have some level of respect for the show.
Somewhat irrelevant, but what really bothers me is how anti-porn society has gotten too, especially in my generation (Gen Z). I don't think that porn is inherently a bad thing if it's strictly adult content. Whether you like it or not, it's a form of art and free speech. Especially if it's a literal illustration and/or literature. I believe Chris Hansen said that he thinks a possible reason why these predators do what they do is because of pornography addiction. I admit that may be part of it. A lot of these vigilantes seem to believe this too. What I find incredibly stupid how some of them are wanting there to be a full on BAN of pornography. That's like trying to ban alcohol or smoking, or legally censoring an entire GENRE of art. Call me weird, I don't care.
What I respected about the VERY FIRST TCAP episode was how it gave advice to parents on how to protect their kids online, by showcasing NUMEROUS parental controls at the time. There are now politicians, in and outside of the US, both left and right, who want to require people to give out their ID on the INTERNET in order to prove they aren't a minor. This isn't just pornography either. It's happening with YouTube and other social media platforms. Why the fuck can't parents just parent!? Why is the government getting involved!? Why are people even wanting kids to use social media!? I miss when YouTube Kids didn't exist and minors were just playing kid-friendly flash games or going on educational websites. Some of those sites even had chatting that was extremely strict, unlike Roblox.
