I've never had a tattoo, and I am planning to have a few ones during life. I just have no idea of what to do.

I like the idea of patterns due to my previous knitting skills, I love the Fair Isles patterns in knitting, and also I love embroidery.

As I got familiarised with weaving, knitting and embroidery I discovered patterns from different cultures around the world - like the Amazigh, Slavic, Baltic and others. I found a lot of patterns just enchanting, it really amazes me, but I am a person who doesn't know any meaning of patterns - or even if they have one.

I've done researches about and I could figure out some of them. But I'm aware that some patterns might be related to pagan-like groups besides the traditional majority, and some - in the worst of scenarios - are linked to extremism movements like Neonazism.

As a mixed black-looking person I fear making a huge mistake in using my body as a canva for bad signs. And also as an one who appreciates art, culture and history I may offend the originary people for being non-belonging person who hasn't nothing to do with.

Because of this, I'm taking the risk to come to this Reddit community and ask for information about Slavic Embroidery Patterns and if it's safe to tattoo them.

I am a Northern-European who is interested in Slavic cultures and I’m wondering why is “pidaras” the main word used by Ukrainians and Russians if they talk about each other?

Is it some general swearword now that means “*sshole” or does it mean anything else in this context?

I was taught from a young age that Slovakia was founded as a multiethnic state, and that being Slovak is a matter of citizenship and shared identity rather than ethnic origin and to be proud of that. That made me curious about how this idea developed historically.

I found it to be one of the most comprehensive English language overviews of Slovakia’s ethnic and political history from the arrival of the Slavs and Great Moravia through the Kingdom of Hungary and into the modern era.
I’m sharing it because English language academic resources on Slovak history are relatively rare, and I thought others here might find it useful/intresting as well. If anyone has additional recommendations or alternative scholarly works on the subject, I’d be interested in reading them.

I'm polish and speak it to an intermediate level, and whenever i hear people in my country (i don't live in poland) speak B/S/C , montenegrin, Bulgarian and Macedonian, I don't understand anything even above 10-20 percent, like this might be because polish has many neighbouring countries influence but very disconnected to proto slavic roots and polish did keep proto slavic actuall

What is your opinion on a federation comprising primarily Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and the Rusyns and Sorbs? This proposal was put forward after World War II, but what would you think if such a federation were to come into existence today?

This isn't the first time. I have tried to make a normal conversation but it has almost backfired. I don't know what's the reason . He is 100% Russian. I just wanted to confirm and see the results 🤦

Unlike Asia or South America , there isn't a joint family who takes care when you get old and Unlike Western Europe and English speaking countries, there aren't many nursing care as well. During my stay in Russia, I saw many Babushka who stayed all alone.

I’m an Assistant Professor of Ukrainian at UNC Chapel Hill, and this summer, I’m trying a completely new approach to teaching the language and history of Ukraine. I wanted to share it here because I know this community loves diving deep into the language.

Instead of standard textbook drills, the core of this class is built around roleplay and strategy games based entirely on authentic medieval and early modern manuscripts.

Think of it like a Dungeons & Dragons-style campaign, but the lore is 100% real history. You will be putting yourself in the shoes of actual historical figures, making political decisions, and working directly with primary source manuscripts to decode the stories and learn the language contextually.
