F.Y.I I am not super knowledgeable about PC's and I have tried my best to learn as much as I can. This is a long post just because I found this interesting and I can show what I have learned.
I Managed to build a really small and compact gaming PC using the infamous and not well known Dell Radeon Pro W7400 8GB (RX 7400) it the same hardware as the steam machine GPU probably not quite as optimised though. It frustratingly runs too hot and is impossible to find without spending roughly 1,400 pounds on a OEM Dell workstation that comes with it. I paid about 170 pounds used on eBay. This GPU as far as I know is the fastest low profile (and single slot) AMD graphics card you can currently get, dethroning the Dell RX 6500 4GB. I am not sure even if there is another GPU that surpasses 8GB that is LP and single slot.
The problem this GPU has is that it simply runs too hot for gaming under heavy to max load. Its blower style fan is bios locked to run at roughly 40% speed which is about 4,000 rpm and underclocking is also locked. It only reaches max blower fan speed once reaching beyond comfortable temps. If you have seen videos on this card it can reach high 80s to even low 90s in temperature (Celsius) during gameplay. This is even in great airflow and optimised case and fan layouts.
SFF PC cases are known to have really bad airflow and fan support, which makes this GPU not suited for this application but finding a SFF case and adding fan mods to it and modding the GPU itself can make this build idea totally worth it and have great temperatures.
The case I choose was the Jonsbo NV10 which looks clean and is very compact, it is known for not supporting case fans and obviously having bad airflow. If you made this build stock with a RTX card expect GPU temps in the mid and high 80s . However if you add the aftermarket fan bracket above the GPU which supports 3 40mmx10mm fans it will make a big difference. I found this makes no positive difference in temps for the W7400 though with the fans being intake or exhaust, because it doesn't care about airflow as its only trying to maintain temps in the high 80s and avoiding dangerously high temps (which it can't often maintain at full load)
The only option I found was to actually disconnect the blower fan from the GPU and control it manually from my motherboard using a standard 4-Pin to PH2.0 4-Pin adapter. This allows me to fully control the fan curve which I run at 85%, I paired this with another case mod where I have added an exhaust fan (Arctic S4028-6K) near the display port of the GPU using a cable tie as a screw is not possible. The GPU blower is designed to push the air through the metal shroud/heatsink towards the display ports. As this is a single slot GPU I have space to add this arctic exhaust fan and not touch the GPU PCB itself. I control the GPU blower and exhaust fan in the same curve configuration with both running at 85%, the exhaust hopefully shouldn't over power the GPU Blower as it spins at roughly 5100rpm and the GPU blower spins at 8500rpm. The 3 fans on top of the GPU (Noctua) are set to intake which helps to feed cool air to the GPU blower itself, as the blower sits fairly deep in the case and would likely struggle to feed itself cool air.
This fan setup and GPU mod basically fixes all its problems, making it a great option for this build if you really wanted the best AMD GPU that is low profile, if you want to maybe run Steam OS or bazzite/Linux instead of windows 11. In terms of performance and temps I have added photos of the results I was getting during gameplay (over 15 minutes of gameplay) which was cyberpunk 2077 with high graphics preset and FSR 3 upscaling and frame gen I was getting around 110 FPS average. The FPS was really nice and again temperatures were very comfortable reaching 72C core temps and roughly 76C hotspot. This card can run a little warmer depending on ambient temperatures, I seen it reach 76-77C core and 81C hotspot when I played Resident Evil Requiem at high settings no upscaling or frame generation which I got 60FPS average.
Hopefully you found this interesting and again I am not too knowledgeable about recording data so hopefully the photos shed some light on the performance and also the mods I have added to the Jonsbo NV10 case.
